I've been wanting to try Joe's for awhile, and I have been missing out. I was debating on the chicken plate or pork belly, asked him and he suggested Pork Belly. Thank gosh he did, it was so so flavorful and had a good bit of fatty pieces which i loved. I'm not a huge beans person, but his baked beans were the best thing i've eaten in a long time. BBQ vs. Caribbean. Can't decide? Well, look no further. Joe's got you covered! If you don't feel like driving into town to get your BBQ/Caribbean fix, head on over to Kapolei where you will find Joe's Backyard BBQ Food Truck. I was pretty fortunate to arrive while there was no line. I had the honor of meeting Joe personally and chatting with him. I have to say I did make the drive to his food truck for the JERK WINGS, but they were sold out along with many other menu items. He informed me he only had BBQ CHICKEN left. And then quickly remembered that the BRISKET was just about ready. I noticed the brisket was not on the menu and questioned him on that. Joe informed me every now and then he will whip up a specialty item, such as brisket, when he has the time since it's a 16 hr process. That's right folks, you read correctly. 16 hours! How amazing is that? We quickly got chatting about the menu and other items he's considering to add to the menu depending on customer demand. I found out from Joe his JERK WINGS currently being sold are the "mild" version of what he's used to because a lot of customers couldn't handle the "heat." But he quickly learned there is a small, but very vocal minority group that is requesting him to turn up the knotch and deliver the FIRE. And that's exactly what Joe is planning to do. Joe said the Fire version of the jerk wings will be made from a recipe passed down in his family, an authentic Caribbean recipe. The mild version is the same recipe, just minus the extra, extra heat. Next we discussed OXTAIL. Did I catch your attention? This was another specialty item not listed on the menu, but has been sought out by the fortunate few who were able to try this dish when it was available for sale. If you lived in Hawai'i for a while, there's a good chance you've tried oxtail soup with ginger. But have you ever tried Oxtail CARIBBEAN STYLE? That's right. Leeward side oh, how lucky you are! Joe with another family recipe, will be offering his oxtail to the lucky people who visit his food truck next week. But how was the food you ask? Amazing. No corners cut. Best BBQ on island! I've gotten the rib plate three times and it has never disappointed! The meat is seasoned well and tears off the bone easily. The BBQ beans are also very good. Hawaiian sweet roll complements the BBQ ribs, the BBQ beans (also very good!), and homemade coleslaw. The coleslaw is also flavorful and refreshing. The hot links are also a must try. They do pack a little heat, but nothing overbearing. I also recently had the brisket and it's amazing! The tasty mac & cheese and moist cornbread are delicious! Highly recommend!! The service here is always friendly and welcoming. I call in advanced and they have the plate ready for a quick cash payment out. Decided to try out a food truck lot in Aiea on Kam Hwy across from Boston's Pizza. Of the trucks, I went with the mixed plat from Joe's. Service was quick and friendly. Im glad they took credit cards since I didn't have cash on hand. The cole slaw was different from the usual. A lot lighter than Im used to and a spicy after burn. I kinda like it. The beans were good; sweet with visible pieces of bacon. The chicken drumsticks were cooked thoroughly but not dried out. The ribs were smoky and the meat came off cleanly from the bone. Homemade hotlinks shipped in from California that are soft with the right amount of kick! I ain't a coleslaw or baked bean dude but their home recipe had me cleaning my plate. HOLY SMOKES!!! Completely thrown off guard once that food hit my mouth. Not saying I wasn't expecting it to be good, but WOW! It was amazing!! The flavors were on point, the portions were huge, and when the wives are happy, life is great! Haha :) My Louisiana born has been a bit picky when it comes to "bbq" here in Hawaii. We have tried a few spots who have, unfortunately, fell short on flavor, texture, and/or service. Yesterday (4/9/21) was the very first time we've had the opportunity to sample Joe's, even though she passes this truck everyday while heading to/from work. I called at 11am, a little after Joe's opened, and a super sweet lady answered the phone with such a welcoming tone, ready to help me. Since the menu and pics here on Yelp seemed random, I asked if she could kindly help with the menu for the day. With no hesitation (I know, I asked a donkey question), she laid it all out in the most friendly way! Love it! I ordered: Mixed Plate with chicken, ribs, baked beans and coleslaw and a Catfish Poboy for the wife. Pick up at 11:30- "No problem, it'll be ready!" She confirmed. My wife got there and noticed a little crowd of people waiting. As expected, lunch crowd, so I'm glad we put our order in. Just as I thought, my wife said the woman helping with orders was super friendly! After glancing at the other options on the menu, she added the Special Jerk Chicken plate and banana pudding. (She couldn't resist haha) Omg, I love when I make good decisions! Every single thing was SOOO FLAVORFUL! The ribs were fall-off-the-bone TENDER, the bbq chicken was cooked perfectly and the bbq sauce they serve is perfect for my liking as well-- not too tangy, not too salty, but jus rite ah! Lol. The jerk chicken, according to my wife, was ON POINT. To me, it was amazing, but to gauge the "on point" meter, I wouldn't know. I just know that it had that spicy, sweet, charred yummy flavor, crispy enough skin, with super duper juicy meat inside. It was served with dirty rice and a dinner roll, with coleslaw in a separate container. The Catfish--- omg I need that again soon!!! It, too, was crispy on the outside, seasoned well, and the fish was still glistening and moist on the inside. I very much appreciated that the coleslaw for the Poboy was served in a separate container. Saved the sandwich from getting all soggy balls during its transportation home to my belly. Hahaha oh and the coleslaw itself is something I LOVED! It was freshly made with green and purple cabbage, carrot, red onion and not sweet or chopped. Just the right texture and crunch to add to everything we were devouring. Yumm. Anyways, to conclude the whole experience, I would DEFINITELY say this is a MUST TRY spot! Went here with the fam after going to surfing at White Plains Beach. It's currently located in the Coral Crater Adventure front parking lot along with a few other lunch wagons. For a convenient lunch wagons, the BBQ ribs were on point and really tasty. It was just the right amount of flavor and juciness. The beans and coleslaw were tasty side dishes. We also got the Catfish sandwich and it was delicious. It reminded me of being back in the south. It's a unique taste that you miss every now and then being on the island and that craving was satisfied. Our mixed plate included bbq chicken that was savory and tasty. I got the brisket plate for $20, it came with a side of southern style mac'n cheese, a Hawaiian roll, 5 strips of slow smoked brisket and slaw. I'm not a fan of slaw but theirs was actually really good and provided a nice relief from all the other savory items. The wait was super quick, like 5 minutes and the staff was really friendly. I will definitely be coming back! It is dry rub style and rather spicy. The wings come as a 4 piece. You get the wing and drumstick for each one. So, in my opinion, it was actually 4 wings and 4 drumsticks.
