This is worth a try. I was skeptical at first but I was sold when I saw the lady cutting the meat and she offered a sample. Let me tell you, the meat was so tender and flavorful. The plates are pretty hefty. The price you pay for what you get is worth every penny. If you're ever craving brisket this is the place to get it, you won't regret it.
They were at the what the truck in waikele and it was SO GOOD. I love me a thinly sliced piece of tri tip and the rib was SO GOOD. I never clean my bones but with these it was so easy. Plus the staff were chic fil a level nice. Hope they're at the next wtt! Barely remembered to take a pic before destroying my plate
Simple menu at Wai Kai and I wanted to try both brisket and tri tip so I ordered the primo combo all rice. It was fulfilling and didn't disappoint me. Most def will order from them again! Friendly and quick staff! And easy going, organized food truck service/place.
I thought I had written something for hometown bbq but I guess I didn't! They're mostly found on the west side but occasionally do a few pop ups in town. On one occasion they were at the Waikiki block party last year - so I was able to walk over after work one weekend! I ordered a few mixed plates plates plus a chili that night! They are not hard to find with their truck and huge smoker in the back! The second time I found them at a Disney event in aiea - that night I purchased esquites which is probably the cheapest thing on their menu but it was super filling!!! You could probably share it with two people and it would be a pretty hefty meal. For the briskets - I preferred the fatty pieces. Service was always super friendly and they're really efficient. You'll have to check out their ig to see where they'll be but it seems like they're always at wai kai on Thursday's. Oh I forgot to add - I did hear that the owner was a graduate from my alma mater! So supporting them was a must!
Saw this on the pearl ridge lineup and wanted to try this because I needed a break from island food. I've had Texas bbq and I know how hard it is to beat. On island, I've only had Tex808 and this beats that by a landslide. The brisket MELTEDDD in your mouth. The only reason for the 4* is because it was a little way too salty for my liking. My husband got his plate with white bread and I'd recommend just toasting it or keeping it in the fridge or something. It was sort of stale and dried out my tongue.
Look for the flying all American blue bus and the simple "Texas BBQ" sign. Legit TX Q Hawaiian style. Hawaiian style? 1. No post oak wood so there is a hint of acrid smoke bitterness. 2. USDA prime or better cuts to create the extreme juiciness of the finished product with a price to match. Brisket (fat end always requested) - Passes the spank test with undulating goodness and accordion pull. Beautiful black, salt and pepper bark and deep smoke ring. Fat is well rendered but its residual richness is omnipresent. Beef ribs (AKA Dino ribs) - Again, beautiful dark bark, deep smoke ring. The sweet beefy flavor of the giant rib, very pronounced. Unfortunately, this one falls off the bone. Tender and while many will appreciate the texture, there is not enough chew for my personal taste. Sold by the pound, wrapped and warmed on the grill. 1.5-2lb each. Burnt ends - Good stuff. Not as fatty or juicy but you get the taste of the simple rub, smoke and how well it interacts with the brisket. Remember Hickory Farms beef log flavor? A side of beans is tasty but very minimal. Available as plates or by the pound. Very hospitable service. They work one order at a time and have a following so be prepared to wait. Follow on IG for popup locations. 1lb brisket, one dino rib, tax and tip, $113. Nearing the pinnacle of BBQ in Hawaii.
I've been supporting Hometown BBQ since 2021 when the owner would sell outside near the old Kmart, many of the times I've went it would be him by himself. Fast forward a couple of years and now this man has a great crew working alongside him. The food is as good as back then, although I would say I'm still a mashed potato type of gal, but this isn't a deal breaker for me. The brisket is the BEST on island and it will forever be my go to place!! They definitely give you your moneys worth of food! You can catch Hometown BBQ at many events. The owner truly is a pit master!
Stopped in at the Pearlridge foodie festival on a Friday night, and hope to see them again at the many night markets. Opted for the Brisket & Tri-tip combo ($33) to try their top meats. You get a choice of rice or bread, and beans or corn. I asked if the bread was anything special, and the cashier shrugged and said "it's white bread." I chuckled and said okay give me rice and beans then." Food came out within 5 minutes, even with a couple others waiting - nice quick service. You can see the workers slicing the beautiful hunks of brisket by the window. Five stars just for the brisket alone. Incredible flavors that I can't get enough of, meat that falls off your fork and melts in your mouth. I just want more! The tri-tip has a complex smoked flavor, but didn't feel seasoned enough on the outside, even for the thin slices. Slightly tough as well. It's a good choice to mix things up, but imo not worth the premium. The baked beans were nice and substantial but a bit too sweet for my taste. I'm guessing brown sugar/molasses Texas style. I'll try the corn next time. It's hard to find good BBQ in Hawaii, so it's exciting that I'm excited for Hometown. Will be looking for that mind-blowing brisket again.

We discovered this food truck last night at the Wai Kai farmers markets organized by Ono Grindz & Makeke. It's a really tall blue bus, so unless you're tall like @Rani R, you might not notice the window where the meat is being cut. We walked by when there was a brisket being cut and it was amazing. The glistening crust in the brisket looked oddly opalescent blue-black (we later found out it was due to the lighting), shiny and juice. We decided to try a brisket & ribs combo with beans. Wow, the brisket wasn't just fork tender, it was falling apart tender. The beans were bigger in size than normal bbq beans and the flavor was amazing. The ribs were super tender, too. One combo was enough food for 2, plus leftovers. I'm so happy to have found a great brisket place at my Thursday night market!
Excellence at its finest. Expeditious service, friendly staff and quality smoked BBQ. Second time here and completely satisfied! The two BBQ sauces were fantastic, one spicy and one regular, they are a must try. If you have yet to try beef cheeks, don't hesitate. It had a great beefy flavor and absorbs smoke phenomenally well. Where are you set up throughout the week or other weekends of the months aside from the Waikele Center? Thanks again!
I first tried this truck a couple of weeks ago at the Wai Kai event on Thursday, after not knowing what to try, I saw someone with a delicious looking plate of meat he was trying to snap some pics for the gram. I asked him where he got it and he pointed to a little blue bus. So I inquired about the selections and went with a 2 choice of pulled pork and brisket. Once at home, I dug into the plate and took that first bite and omg, the heavens shined down from up above and hallelujah was playing in the background! Now mind you, I'm not a brisket person, unless it's from here. I've tried Roy's and a few others and they don't quite measure up to hometown BBQ. I managed to go back again and remembered to snap pics before devouring. The smoked kalua is good as well. I'm sure everything on the menu is tasty, maybe one day I'll get around to trying it all, but the brisket is the star

I loved the BBQ when we visited Austin, TX and was craving authentic Texas BBQ and Hometown BBQ definitely satisfied that craving! Their brisket is soo juicy and flavorful and tritip was really good as well. After trying their Premium Meats Plate (combo of brisket & tritip), we went back for more and got the chili too! The chili wasn't what I was expecting for a chili but still so flavorful and topped with a good amount of sour cream. And the portions! They do not skimp on the amount of meat they give, wow! The brisket chili bowl was LOADED with brisket and so was the combo plate. We will definitely be returning. My husband talked to one of the guys (I'm assuming the owner?) and he said he has a pit for the meat (just like in Texas) which is why it's soo good & smoky. Really worth the try if you're in the mood for American BBQ. I'm so thankful they're on the west side!!

We got their Buckin Bronco plate and chose Brisket, Kiawe Smoked Pork Belly, and Smoked SpareRibs. ALL the meat was so good, but I'd have to pick the spareribs as my fave! Loved the sauce it was coated in! I think we'd trade the pork belly to try the TriTip next time, it was still very good still! Brisket was also amazing! Because we saved the brisket for last, it was so much meat and perfect for two meat lovers lol Their corn and baked beans weren't anything to go crazy for, but definitely made the plate feel more whole- wish they put more with how much meat we received. For reference, we tried their truck at an event in Waikiki (on Kalakaua Ave). Because of the location of the event and with how crowded it was, it was a bit hard to figure out where to order as everyone was clumped together- but they managed to keep everything organized and remind people where to stand. read more
The serious grindz... I was so happy to have Jackie driving us down to Wai Kai and knowing at the same time there was their usual even every Thursday night which is the Ono Grindz and Makeke at Wai Kai 4p-8p as it's filled with various small biz gathering on the lawn as the sun sets browsing around was just fun and when I finally decided on Hometown BBQ it's because I knew exactly what I wanted. Creating a menu is very difficult and with this market circumstances it can be difficult since there's not a lot of tables and many menus are handwritten with price so I don't have samples of size or plating as I was afraid if I would be able to carry it around without making a mess. Thankfully though here I wanted the Esquites which is basically corn, beans, beef, sour cream and bbq sauce. I asked if it came in a bowl but it was a container so very transportable but very hot as well and large omg which still made it a challenge to carry around. The service here is fast and friendly and as I took a few bites from it it was delicious a tad bit salty for my personal taste but really enjoyed all the layers of flavors it had and didn't expect it to be that enormous. Great to support our small local biz while getting something unique is fun and being in our hometown is the best. Thank you! read more
You can smell the barbecue from the street. The service was amazing but it's a long wait. All the cooks wear cowboy hats. We ordered the brisket with 2 sides of herb buttered corn. It was so good and tender. The meat just falls apart. So worth the wait. read more

Texas BBQ in Hawai'i?! Say less!!! Being that my other half is from Houston, Texas, I had to get this for us to try! I was one of the vendors at the Ono Grindz & Makeke at Kapōlei Commons, and Hometown BBQ HI was one of our food truck neighbors. I decided to go with the BBQ Pork Belly plate, & they were nice enough to give me a sample of their Father's Day special Dino Ribs. Ya'll... those dino ribs were freaking HUUUUUGE!!! And it was oh so delicious! I will have to say, oddly the plate had that deliciously, heavenly smokey bbq smell, but also smelled like a farm, LOL, but don't let that deter you... just goes to show how fresh their meat it! Lol! They were nice enough to give me extra bbq sauce, which was a lilikoi bbq sauce I believe, and I asked for the spicy one! I'm telling ya'll, that sauce was life... the perfect spicy heat kick, with a subtle sweetness that thankfully didn't overpower... I prefer my bbq sauce deep, smokey, & spicy with a slight sweetness over the typical sweet & tangy bbq sauce. And their potato salad, CHEF'S KISS!!! I def recommend this food truck, DON'T SLEEP ON THEM!!! The owners are so sweet & generous, I mean look at that plate with all that meat... def worth the price! When you see them on the road or at a market, do yourself a favor & get a plate from them! read more

My husband and I have been craving good brisket as we are fans of those shows. I stopped by tonight unplanned at Waikele and ordered and am sooo happy I did. The brisket was so flavorful and juicy. The crispy black parts melted in my mouth and the beans was a perfect match. There was so much brisket that I have enough left over for a second meal, we'll worth it on price and value. I was desperately looking for the food truck name, trying to describe what the truck looked like. "Texas BBQ" it was blue, red and white. There were horns displayed in front of windows. I will gladly follow this truck wherever they are to order again. read more

Tried Hometown BBQ at a good truck event at Waikele. Overall really good food but not sure that I'd come back. Ordered the brisket. REALLY good but a bit pricey at $21. There was a good portion of meat and enjoyed the corn. At 6pm they were already out of rice so had the bread. Honestly the bread was the strangest part of the plate. It is cold sliced white bread. Nothing that special. Considering that the meat is already cooked, it did take quite long for the food to come out (about 20 minutes). read more

Delicious Smoked BBQ in Hawaii. These guys were at the Kakaako Night Market and their line was super long. So decided to stand in line and see what the fuss was about. Definitely worth the wait, although it could use some bbq sauce which was $1.00 more. The meat were fall apart tender, moist & juicy. The baked beans were ono as well. Don't forget to ask for utensils. read more

Wow, I have to say, this is a legit BBQ. Wow! Tried their brisket and pork ribs were amazing. The ribs were "pull off the bone" tender but still had a bit of tug. I'm not sure how they pulled that off. The brisket was insanely juicy. I got the fatty side instead of the lean. The sauce is very unique with a bit of tang. There's a noticeable amount of pepper in the sauce and the rub on both the ribs and the brisket. Can't wait to find this truck again! read more
