Yes, the cute panda mascot made me try this food truck. Asian guys of all ages are so susceptible to anything kawai AF. Who doesn't love Kabayaki AKA "eel sauce", spicy yum yum sauce, and kewpie preferably mixed in some kind of way? It's all about the sauces. They are much less salty and milder than most places. They add flavor to whatever they are on instead of overpower the flavor of the protein. "The Happy Mix", takes a re-fabricated, eight inch, jumbo shrimp katsu tube coated in kabayaki sauce and pairs it with the orgasmic explosion, errrrr, I mean chicken explosion (chicken katsu topped with a semi spicy yum yum sauce cut with kewpie a drizzle of kabayaki and furikake for good measure). Lots of sauce but the flavor of the shrimp and extremely well made, crisp, juicy, chicken katsu still shine. "The Salmon Explosion", a very well cooked piece of previously frozen salmon topped with a good amount of imitation crab also generously covered in the dynamite, kewpie, kabayaki concoction. We tried the food truck and loved it! The plates are $19 but they're huge! 2 people could share it. We tried the mix with the jumbo shrimp and the honey chicken, as well as one with the siracha chicken. Everything was tasty, I especially liked the honey chicken. The food truck was parked in front of the BOH main branch downtown. We decided to try it because of a recommendation and I wasn't disappointed. It was not a bad wait and the food was hot when it came out. The shrimp was a little deceiving because it was mini shrimps mixed into some sort of batter to keep its shape. Kapi'olani Community College has Happy belly eatery coming on campus on Mondays to give a lunch option. They parked in the center of campus by the lawn, between Lama Library and Naio Building. Their bright purple truck is hard to miss. I was going to be good and eat my salad but I noticed they have a Shrimp Katsu Burger and couldn't resist. Whoah! The taro bun is toasted just the right amount. I appreciate details like that. Between the bun are jumbo shrimp katsu cut in half. There's LOTS of shrimp in the katsu, not just minced but get shrimp pieces! Happy Belly is not stingy with da shrimp! Super crispy but not oily. I liked the plethora of mixed greens and the kimchi sour cream. There's a slice of American cheese that melts on the katsu. I'm not sure how I feel about that cos the cheese kinda takes away from the crunch of the katsu. If I order it again, might ask for no cheese or ask that they cheese is between bun and greens so it doesn't soggify the katsu :) I'm happy we have another food option on campus! haha. Happy Belly Eatery is one of my favorite places to grab lunch at UH. I'm always looking forward to getting either their Panda Bento ($5) or Happy Mix Plate ($18). Panda Bento: There's no better deal in town than their $5 lunch bentos. You never really know what's going to appear as a lunch bento that day, but it's sure to leave you full and satisfied. Happy Mix Plate: $18 may seem a little steep, but the portions are so huge that it happily fed both my boyfriend and I. It comes with 1pc Jumbo Shrimp Katsu and choice of either the Chicken Explosion or Honey Sriracha Chicken. I haven't tried the Honey Sriracha Chicken yet, but the Chicken Explosion was amazing. The chicken was still really juicy despite the extra crispy batter on the outside. The Jumbo Shrimp Katsu was also incredible--it's essentially a shrimp paste log made entirely of shrimp. Second Happy Belly experience about 9 months removed from our first. What can I say.... it was just as amazing the second time around. My mom again surprised us with lunch but with all different dishes from the first time. For this visit, she got us the Pork Katsu Burger, the Shrimp Katsu Burger, and the Kimchi Fry Tots. I don't know what it is about this place but all their dishes are just so unique and creative. And the sauces used to top the burgers are just as unique and DELICIOUS. Everything about each burger was absolutely perfect. The bun had an amazing taste and texture, and the shrimp and pork were perfectly battered and cooked. Each bite made me happy about how amazing it was but sad that I was that much closer to finishing the burger. And the fry tots were just as delicious. For the record, we didn't get to eat our food until a few hours after my mom purchased it, so it wasn't fresh. But again, everything was still absolutely PERFECT. If this place had a brick and mortar presence, so that it was always easy to locate/find without looking online, the line would be out the door. Happy Belly Eatery is a food truck located in Pearlridge's parking lot, near Sears. They also show up at various food truck events as well. For the most accurate hours, be sure to follow them on Instagram because it changes slightly week to week. Ever since my bf introduced me to the wonders of country fried steak (or chicken fried steak), I've been on a search for the best one on the island. Sadly, not many places offer it and although the recipe I tried was quite good, it was more work than I would like (I'm not a fan of frying - I always get hurt lol). So when I randomly stumbled upon Happy Belly on Instagram (probably as a sponsored post/ad) and saw that they have country fried steak on their menu, I had to give it a try. We tried their country fried steak with chorizo gravy (of course) and a pork katsu burger. The steak was thicker than I was used to but was quite good (and a good deal for $12). They were very generous with the gravy, which I loved. Unfortunately the bf had to ruin it for me, as he pointed out, halfway through the plate, that the gravy reminded him of Zippys chili. Not hating on Zippys chili (please note that I still stick by saying that it's good), but it just wasn't the same after that. I started tasting chili myself. The pork katsu burger was bigger than we thought (so GREAT deal for $6). It came in a taro bun and had unagi sauce and their house spicy sauce in it and was just sooo good! I was surprised. It was definitely way better than I thought and is a great get if you're hungry but not too hungry. Next time we go back, I've already decided that we're getting the happy mix (jumbo shrimp katsu with unagi sauce and house kimchi sour cream with honey sriracha chicken or chicken explosion (chicken explosion please :D) and the chimichurri steak wrap....or maybe the shrimp katsu burger (that appears to be quite popular). It was a great decision on my part to follow my nose to this food truck! The Chicken Explosion was a crowd pleaser... Sriracha and unagi sauce generously layered overtop a bed of breaded chicken cutlets, 2 scoops of white rice sprinkled with furikake, and a side of greens with creamy dressing. Brought our son and daughter-in-law to check out this awesome food truck. Takes a few minutes after ordering for the food to be ready but that's because it's fried up fresh and that's a good thing! They ordered the Happy Mix. One jumbo shrimp katsu and some chicken explosion. Both have house sriracha and unagi sauce drizzled over. Chicken wasn't too spicy but was very moist inside, crunchy (panko breading) outside. Was very good. We ordered the Jumbo shrimp katsu. Same item as in the Happy Mix but you get TWO jumbo shrimp drizzled with house sriracha and unagi sauce. Also not too spicy. This was an absolute winner in looks and to eat! Not positive but I think they place two shrimp (no tail) end to end then bread it with panko and deep fry. So I think you actually get 4 nice sized, plump shrimp. The crunch was awesome! The shrimp was plump and juicy, cooked just right. You can get mac or tossed salad. We all got tossed and while we were sad we didn't get to taste their mac (which we assume would have been divine since everything else was!) even the tossed was good. Spring mix was very fresh and served with a very good Asian inspired honey mustard dressing. We liked the dressing so much we kept the leftover! So how good was the shrimp? I almost never eat a full regular plate (not because I can't, only because I don't want to gain weight with all the take out/eating out I do), but I made an exception and ate ALL of the shrimp with the rationale that it just wouldn't be as crunchy reheated. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't get the mac salad. Tossed was lighter! Portions aren't huge but substantial enough. I think they are open 10:00 to ? 8:00? Not sure about the closing time. I think they close earlier if they run out for the day since I don't usually see them much past 6 when driving by. Closed Mondays unless it's a holiday. Scrolling through IG, I saw that their truck was headed to Geiger Park. So my son and I decided to give them a try. We enjoyed a nice walk while anticipating the yummy goodness. He was set on the honey sriracha chicken. I just wanted to snack, so I got the tater tots with chorizo gravy to share. It wasn't on the menu but the person taking our order was helpful and mentioned it since I wasn't really feeling like furikake lol. Everything was fresh which is a MUST! And the chicken and tots were "just out of the fryer" hot. I tried a piece of my son's chicken and the sauce was a great balance of sweet and spicy! The chorizo gravy or sauce was on point, just as if I had made it at home haha. Silky smooth. Not over salted. Nothing fake or cheesy about it. Very good! Generous portion as well. Next time I want to try the shrimp katsu burger for sure. Amazing, delicious and I can't wait to go back. I drove from Hawaii Kai just to eat at Happy Belly. It was well worth the drive. We got the Happy Mix: honey chicken and giant prawn ( it was huge) with rice and salad. The chicken was perfectly crunchy and the honey sauce was delish. The prawn was giant and I can't believe it was only $15 for the Happy Mix. We also got the Country Fired Steak with chorizo gravy. I had to stop myself from leaping into their truck to bathe in the gravy. It was to die for!!!! It comes with rice and salad and what a deal for $10!!! I can't say no to tater tots and fries so we also got the one topped with chimichurri steak. Only for $8! Their food is so good and the service was kind and efficient. We ate the food in the parking lot like a tailgate party. I couldn't help myself, there was no way I was going to be able to drive back to Hawaii Kai with the delicious smells coming from the back seat. This was at the WhatTheTruck fair event at Waikele that's usually on Friday's, otherwise they're at their usual crib in Mapunapuna next to Furever Friends. Their Broken Sushi Bowl has so much flavor and variety in it. Each serving of the spicy ahi, imitation crab, seaweed and rice, edamame and last but definitely not least, the shrimp tempura, is extremely mouthwatering and worth my one way 25 mile commute to them from Makaha. I got this when I was hangry so took a few bites before taking this pic and then I devoured this tasty bad boy. This local company has extremely welcoming and patient employees that provide EXCELLENT customer service. Whenever I had a question about what's in each dish, they were crazy patient, never rushed me, and were so friendly about it. They can get quite busy so definitely be that "early bird that catches the worm". The spicy ahi isn't crazy spicy which is awesome because my spice tolerance is lower than rock bottom. With it's nice touch of the imitation crab, it sends you to food coma. And the shrimp tempura is completely TO DIE FOR and highly recommend getting this bowl for a variety of stomach grumbling, mouthwatering satisfaction. I went there around 11:45 so you would expect a lunch crowd beginning to form so I was pleasantly surprised when there was no one at the food truck. But there was a long line at the other end for the birria. I stood there shouting hello for a few seconds and wondered if there was anyone there except that the generators at the back of the truck was going full blast. As I shouted my last hello a woman appeared to take my order. I went back to stand under the tree for shade. A minute later there was a couple and another man who appeared to want to order. After waiting a while and trying to shout something the couple went away but lone gentleman waited. I'd say he waited a full minute before he was able to get the attention of the woman. He walked to the area I was waiting. A couple of guys also put in their order. We waited and I understood that there would be a wait when things are cooked to order. But then the guy who ordered after me had his number called. As he was leaving he must of sd something to the woman about me because he motioned in my direction to her and as he was leaving he told me sorry. I picked up my order shortly after and left in a hurry and only when I was leaving did I notice my drink was missing. I didn't want to go back because the traffic on Kamehameha Hwy was horrendous. I was willing to mark it up as my fault for not checking. Initially I thought there was only one person working and I was willing to cut her some slack. But later I could see there was a 2nd person when a little red car pulled up and a guy went into the truck to deliver additional supplies. They weren't that busy with orders so that counter person should be in the front. I'm sure she missed other customers like that couple that ended up walking away. The food-- I ordered the Katsura shrimp, making it a meal. The sandwich was wonderful. The taro bun fresh and the shrimp perfectly tempuraed. First time eating here. Right in Māpunapuna near my work. Food was really good. Had the chicken explosion - this is a really crispy chicken on the outside with tender meat on the inside.
