We stopped by for an early dinner after grocery shopping at Seafood City. Since the weather looked a bit gray, we decided to drive over. Even though the lot was busy, there were plenty of open spots near Hou since it's toward the end of the plaza. It's been a while since I've been to this area--it has cleaned up nicely now that Highway Inn is gone. Inside, the restaurant is clean, well-lit, and the staff is very friendly. We ordered the Shrimp Tempura Udon and the California + Spicy Tuna + Crab Salad roll combo. No regrets! The miso-based broth in the udon was delicious, and I appreciated that the shrimp tempura came on the side to stay crispy. My personal favorite, however, was the spicy tuna on top of the cone sushi--it paired perfectly with the udon. The prices are great, and I was happy to learn they have a second location on Kapiolani. It's a great addition to the West Side and clearly popular with the local crowd. I'll definitely be back!

The Pearl City location has tons of Musubi, poke, and snack options available for you to eat. Although seating is limited, all the items you can purchase there are easy to take with you and sitting comfortably in the car we were able to enjoy our lunch poke bowls. But let's be real, most of us would love to just pick up some poke bowls and head straight to the beach right? The service was friendly and helpful and they even have signage that helps show you how to navigate your poke and rice options. The poke cuts were smaller than what I was used to but didn't detract from the flavor, in fact, it probably make the flavor better in that it helped with the mixing and you got a more balanced bite. I'm usually not an ocean salad kind of person either but they've changed my mind with their great flavors, don't be afraid to try that either. With all that deliciousness acquired, don't forget to find a great canned juice of your choosing to wash it all down. While the price isn't the cheapest poke that you can buy, it was definitely delicious and made with care that I truly appreciated and served out of a shop that makes you feel nostalgia. Instead of giving up and dismissing them, I wanted to try it again just in case that was a one-off mistake. Thank goodness I went back, because the next time I got the same thing and it was delicious! The garlic was so crunchy and the fish was fresh. But here's the thing: the moment that dried aku hit the table, all my food blogger instincts went completely out the window. It was just me and that fish, and nothing else mattered. The dried aku was everything the hype promised -- deeply savory, with that concentrated, almost smoky flavor you only get when something is made with real patience and skill. While the poke gets a lot of love at Foodland, the low key superstar is their fried chicken. Warm, cold, room temperature, it's hella good. We tried their salt and vinegar wings and their garlic fried chicken, and it was some of the best bites on the entire trip. Definitely don't skip out on this on your next trip to Foodland!
