3 stars because I did not get any chicken in my chicken rice bowl! I always get quesadillas at a different location so I tried a new location and thought I'd try the chicken rice bowl. The vegetables were wonderful but no chicken! I had already driven home and there was no way I was going to drive back because it was 9 o'clock when the store closes. I was definitely disappointed. There was no chicken, the vegetables were wonderful, but now do I have to check every order for my protein before I leave the store? The staff was very friendly and helpful. The parking was a bit of a pain but was glad that District Taco offered two hours free! Plenty of time for me to enjoy some tacos. I was hoping for a more traditional taco experience but felt like a variation of Chipotle when it came to options. Wanted some tongue, al pastor, buche, birria, etc. For a party of two, three tacos each, plus drinks and a small churro $42.30 felt a bit on the expensive side. The tortillas were tasty, the steak, a bit on the salty side and chewy. The barbacoa was overly seasoned but very tender. The tacos were mainly veggie with not much meat. Glad I got the drinks! The horchata was decent. Lightly sweetened. The churros were greasy, there were warm but had an oily taste to them. More horchata was needed! The staff were friendly. Gone are the days where District Taco offered unlimited toppings, an endless salsa bar, and friendly service. The restaurant has become cold and unpersonal. There are multiple self-ordering kiosks and seemingly no option to order from the cashier. The cashier Erick was unfriendly and unaccommodating in my request to add additional toppings even if I paid for them. There were two customers inside around lunch time and no one in line. The tacos were made quickly but smashed together into one aluminum foil. They just don't care. The tacos were barely filled and didn't taste very good. I won't be back. read more

District Taco has improved a bit since my last review, decided to go back to try it again and the portions are bigger now. Though I still think it's a little over priced for the Tacos. Especially considering you can get better tacos from Taqueria Cancun for a short drive away and cheaper prices. The main reason I keep going back though is it's walking distance from my house, so basically just convivence for a quick/fast bite to eat. The best options on the menu are still the Breakfast items, highly recommend the Breakfast Tacos with Chorizo! 3.5 stars. So what's the deal? Sadly, it's a far cry from the old days of district Tacos food truck where the flavors were lively and vibrant. Sadly, perhaps due to the pandemic, you order through a tablet and can't add your own fixins anymore. Also there's a limit of 5... I'm a big proponent of mixing all the salsa together so I found it limiting. Honestly. The food itself is a 2 star even based on other locations. I got the bowl for the first time with chicken and it barely had any flavor at all. Which is sad. So how did it garner a 3.5 star review? The staff! Never in my life have I felt so welcomed. I literally felt culinary love.... I know it's strange but when k set foot in the restaurant., coming in from the cold, I felt welcomed. No one rushed me to order (I was waiting for a friend) and even if I didn't, I'm pretty sure the staff would not have said anything. There were cute families just hanging out, with kids running around happy. When I left with leftovers, the staff made sure I was happy. They asked if I wanted a bag, more utensils, anything. Well, I think they jumped the shark. Used to really like this place. Ordered fish tacos and,...."where's the fish?" It was crumbles that I guess was fish. The guacamole was good but the taco chips were stale. I was disappointed from the start since: (1) there's not someone upfront to take your order so you need to use one of the Kiosks, (2) the food didn't match what I asked for through the kiosk, (3) the veggies didn't taste like they were fresh, (4) no salsa bar so you need to ask for more salsa and they give you tiny containers and I didn't think the varieties of the salsas are the same as what they had in the past. I was a District Taco customer ever since they started as a food cart in Ballston. when the toppings were fresh, flavorful, and avocado/gauc add on was free! I was happy to see them succeed and open several brick and mortar restaurants. Their self serve topping station was awesome. Sadly; the pandemic took away the topping/sauce Station is gone, and it hasn't come back. The quality and taste of their tacos took a serious nosedive. I think previously you could make it good through their toppings stations, without it, the tacos are bland and not tasty at all. Meat didn't taste well seasoned, and through it all, it's pretty pricey. It used to be a great value but they charge more than much than the competition which is much better, such as Taco Bamba, La Tingeria, Taqueria Picoso. I left feeling very unsatisfied, and it's hard to have a "bad" taco, so definitely disappointing I'll probably never come back. read more

It's a fun place. District Taco employees are both kind and friendly. I like the inviting atmosphere. Also kudos for their fountain drinks, being not affiliated with Coca Cola or Pepsi. This is a alright restaurant, but personally I'm more a fan of Cafe Rio and similar restaurants. This is not a reflection on District Tacos folks, it's more that their food seems limited in comparison. Seating here is plentiful, and parking is a cinch, as the lot is right next to it. As for their tacos, you can go traditional or soft shell. They are tasty, but on the smaller side. This was a let down, although their pico de gallo is delicious. The bowls aren't as good as I was hoping. Will they work for a quick lunch? Sure but I'm not overly thrilled by the size or ingredients. It is a fun place, but I think it'll get an average rating ultimately. If they made a few changes, and had bigger portions, I would bump them up a star. read more

I have frequented District Taco on numerous occurrences and always tend to try something new on the menu. The burrito bowl is the item I frequent the most since it is an appropriate portion size and does not make me feel too full. The nachos are also strongly recommended. However, after trying to Burrito Mojado, I think I found my special niche. A fully stuff burrito with fillings of your choice, topped with sour cream, chipotle sauce, guacamole, and pico de gallo could not be beat. A great options for vegetarians, especially due to the amount of guacamole they provide on those options. There are many locations across Virginia / DC / Philadelphia, so I would recommend finding the nearest one to you! read more

A few days ago I wrote a sarcastic review because I was angry at the decline of chains in the DMV. On 09/29 a friend purchased $14.51 of tacos at the Alexandria branch of District Taco. We were upset that the size of the three tacos were a little small for the price. We complained that many of the chains in the area were cutting back portions but raising prices. I wanted to revisit and say that while I do get tired of tiny sandwiches for $15 and having just a slice of meat and cheese on oversized bland bread; I do not operate a restaurant and deal with rising ingredient prices. I'm a fan of District Taco, especially with their love of giving back to the community! This local chain offers a Yucatan-style Mexican eats, which includes tacos, burritos, nachos borrachos, papas gordas, quesadillas, various sides, breakfast options, kid plates, and beverages. I had a little get-together here, and the service and the attention to the quality of the food that was offered was so great! I enjoyed their Burrito Mojado, which comes with your choice of protein (I usually get their barbacoa) and salsa de chile, cheese, sour cream, rice, black beans, lettuce, and tomato, and I top it with guacamole. The burritos are always of a generous size (pretty monstrous and can easily be divided into 2 meals!) - the barbacoa is juicy, tender, and flavorful, and they don't skimp out on the meat! Love the cheesy-ness and the fact that you can top with extra onions/salsa from the toppings bar afterwards. My counterparts enjoyed their filled-to-the-max tacos and burritos, and they loved customizing their meals with onions, jalapenos, and the different salsas. I get that it's a hard time right now, but I placed an order at 6:00 pm today on Grubhub and after waiting for 2 hours, watching the time keep ticking up, they canceled my order!!!! I'm so mad - and hungry! If they thought they'd have such a hard time to get orders in, they shouldn't have taken it. This place was delicious when they first opened. Now that they have established themselves it nots so great, and I discovered why. I decided to give them another shot and watch what they were doing to see the difference. I ordered a breakfast burrito, they didn't grill one thing. They even pulled out some soggy eggs that were pre-grilled earlier. When I saw that, I was like "there it is, the failure". Who does that, pre-grill eggs? To top it off, they pulled some soggy pre-grilled veggies to add to the soggy eggs. COVID-19 update: District Taco in Merrifield has takeout or outdoor dining (at a few tiny tables), but no indoor dining service. Our family has come here once a month to enjoy steak tacos (Mexican way with onions and cilantro), burritos, chips with queso, and churros (fried dough with cinnamon). It's a tasty and simple Yucatan-style dinner. Given some food delivery service issues (as reported on Yelp), I would recommend placing a takeout order in advance for pickup (instead of using a food delivery service). You can choose to pickup in the store or have curbside delivery (someone will bring the order to your car). The online confirmation will provide a time estimate for pickup (usually 10-20 minutes depending on how large your order is). The free parking lot next to DT is very convenient with plenty of spots. If you decide to go inside, bring your facial covering when you pickup your order. read more

I was undecided on what to get so the cashier was kind enough to offer suggestions based off what i told him i liked. Unlike Chipolte, you do not get to pick as you go but if a menu item has something you do not want you can ask them to 86 it. I wasn't in the mood for a shell so I settled on the Burrito Desnudo, their take on a burrito bowl with no shell, your choice of protein, black beans and rice and you get to choose all your toppings. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint!!! Served in a large white paper bowl, my food was piping hot and the toppings were plentiful, nothing was lacking in this bowl! I could point and identify every topping I asked for with ease. Full is an understatement! You are given a flashcard which serves as your number and your food is delivered to your table! I took a peep at the salsa bar but it was a little messy so I opted out. I was a little disappointed that it was so messy just didn't seem like a good option, it was not tidied up in quite a while from the looks of it. I love the freedom of building my own taco lol I had a chicken taco with almost every topping they offer. The chicken had a delicious charcoal flavor. The variety is great. I'll definitely be returning to try their bowls and burritos. ****update**** I recently tried their fish taco and it wasn't my favorite. Not bad but not as good as I expected it to be. I was first introduced to District Taco during their soft opening at their Alexandria location, when I was there by happy accident while they were giving our free food. Back then, it seemed like more if a Taco Bamba-esque model, where each taco was truly unique and ambitious. As they've expanded, it seems that they've shifted their model to more of a Cafe Rio-style business, where they have more attention to meals like burritos and bowls, but they'd still have tacos too. The toppings can be "Mexican style," "American style," or my personal favorite "jefe style," but of course you can just go rogue and order whatever toppings you want. I was feeling indecisive, so I looked at the reviews and just decided to order what my girl Hannah (locally famous prolific yelper) went with. The burrito mojado (meaning it's wet, smothered with that Gucci sauce) jefe style, filled with barbacoa (yum!) and added guac. Hannah knows her stuff! This was so good. It really hit the spot. I'm glad I didn't try to get tacos because I think I would have been disappointed. Burritos travel better anyway. We also got a side of chips and guac--so solid. The hot sauce isn't that good, but the milder green one is really delicious. We had the best of intentions to save some for leftovers, but you know what? that didn't work out. I went here for the first time today to get lunch with a friend. Since it was my first time, I wanted to try a little of everything. I got a bowl just to play it safe. I was pleased to see how much I could customize my bowl, and that's kinda it. The portion size compared to the size of the bowl wasn't even halfway filled. The food had no flavor to it at all. I got chip and quseo as well that was good and a churro, which was good as well. They had a freestyle soda fountain, but the option were limited. My friend had been telling me about District for a while leading up to my DC/Nova visit, and we came here for my first proper meal in the area. Upon walking in, I had a hard time deciding what to get. Now this is definitely a good thing given that it means there are several menu items I feel I would have been satisfied with, but ultimately I decided on trying out three different tacos. I placed an order for a carne asada taco with guac, a taco al pastor, and a chorizo taco. All three with corn tortillas and all three Mexican style (topped with cilantro and onions). I unwrapped my first taco, the chorizo taco and dug in. It was delightful, but not life changing by any means. As I unrolled my next taco, I couldn't help but instantly notice that it was missing something: the meat. I checked my receipt to make sure that it had matched my order, which it unfortunately did not. I was missing my carne asada in my carne asada and guac taco. So yes, I was sadly left with a guac taco. A guaco, if you will. I ended up wrapping this guaco around my final taco, and this concoction was very tasty. Prices for this place are very fair. If you're looking for a quick and cheap bite during your work break or with some friends, this might be a good place to go. If you've never tried it, I think it'd be worth coming out of your shell for it. If you're looking for some authentic Mexican tacos, maybe try your luck elsewhere. read more

I came a few times to give it chances and tried different dishes, including tacos (al pastor, carnitas, chorizo & fish) with their Mexican/American/jefe toppings as well as their huevos rancheros. Cons: 1. Not authentically Mexican - size of the tortilla and for reason they are wrapped up. 2. What possibly was warm grilled meat and fish is made ALL COLD by putting on cold lettuce, pico de gallo. They should really consider not using refrigerated veggies. 3. No aguas frescas (horchata, etc.) 4. Huevos rancheros that they sell here is an awful perversion of what the traditional Mexican dish tastes like. They put in rice and lettuce and in the end it tastes like a burrito bowl with eggs. I have been coming to this place for years. My first exposure was to their shop in Arlington and I have been a fan ever since. And even though there has been an explosion in taquerias, this place still hold it's own. I like a number of items on their menu. However, I first like that I can choose the type of tortilla. Many of the newer taquerias only offer the traditional corn tortilla (which I like a lot), but sometimes this gringo likes his flour tortilla ... and am happy to see it is still on the menu. And every now and then (here is where I date myself), I like to have my taco the "American Way" with lettuce, tomato, and cheese ... the way I use to have it when I was younger. Of course, all the usual fillings are offered. And they are all good so you can't go wrong. One of my favorites is still the breakfast taco "Orale" which adds chorizo. Yum! read more

Two words. GO. NOW!! I observed District Taco and the entire area being built and heard they were coming to Dunn Loring area. A co-worker told me about it, I checked Yelp and saw quite the buzz so I bookmarked it! This place is awesome. I think Chipotle has major competition on their hands. I ordered three soft, tortilla tacos, 3 for $8. I had one grilled chicken, grilled steak, and pulled beef. Each one had unique flavor, bursting with freshness. One word: DELISH!! Each one with lime, garlic rice, cheese, cilantro and sour cream on the side. They have a salsa bar so I loaded my mini-containers of this and that, sauces from mild to extra spicy, sliced lime, cilantro, pico de gallo, and took it all home. The chips are served warm. A bit on the pricey side. A small bag is $3, and twice as much (a large, which is not all that large) costs $6. Just for fried tortillas!!? Again, too pricey for corn chips. But they were really good! I ordered the small and wish I had ordered the large. What I really liked, they tightly wrap each taco in foil, so remained warm by the time I made it home about 15 minutes later. I asked for the sour cream on the side because I did not want them to become soggy. Next time, I will ask for little lettuce on the side as well. The service was efficient. I went sort of late, like 9:30 pm so there weren't any crazy lines and I did not have to wait. I think I will go a second time this week. Really blew me away. read more

Been recommended to check out this place but have never manage to make it into DC. I hate navigating DC and dealing with parking so it's a huge plus that this one is a bit closer to home with better parking. While the lot next to it is gated off you can park there for free, which is what we did on a Friday at about 5:30. Place wasn't too busy. Cashier was very friendly and helpful in answer questions. She wasn't sure on a few of my questions (what kind of dressing is their house dressing) but being how new the place is I wasn't entirely surprised. Got the burrito bowl with steak, rice, beans, pico, lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole. As well as a side of chips and large queso. I would have liked to try their shrimp tacos but they only have those Monday and Thursday (I think). They have a salsa bar with lots of options. I pretty much tried everything. The bright green one (sorry don't remember what it was called) was pretty flavorless but the others were good. We dumped some of the hot ones into the queso. The queso was good but we wanted more of a kick to it. Adding the salsa made it perfect. The food was out pretty quickly, they brought it to our table. Seemed to be pretty fresh food. And overall really enjoyed it all. The steak was of really good quality and flavor. I would certainly get it again. The rice was quite over cooked. Hopefully that won't be the case next time. I really like the flavor of their pico. But the guacamole was rather bland, I wouldn't pay to add that on again. My mom had their nachos with carnitas, which I tried some of. I don't think I would order the carnitas again as it wasn't super flavorful and was rather fatty - more fatty then I think it should be. Rather lacking in flavor across the board, but the salsa bar helps make up for that. Seems to be really fresh, quality food at a decent price. While they aren't the best Tex-Mex I have ever had, I would say they are the best I have had in the DC area and will soon make the trip back. read more

I tried the same location again. I ordered the guacamole and chips and to pay almost $5 for this side is futile. We are only receiving the normal sized salsa cups for the guacamole. Rip off. Plus the salsa cups are for children. It's definitely a scheme to charge us more but give less! The service is fine, but the over rationing. My child, spouse, and I decided to stray from our typical taco stop because we were in the area. It was a mistake. I order 3 tacos. 1 carnitas, 1 pollo, and 1 barbacoa. I received 3 carnitas. I returned to the counter with my receipt and food. It took another 15 minutes for them to make my food correctly. My table mates were finished with their lunch before I was able to eat mine. There wasn't any acknowledgement or apology of the error and they didn't expedite my order(if anything it seemed like they took extra long to make it). Positives- queso was good, chips were fresh and crispy. The potatoes in the burrito my child had were flavorful. The soda machine has lots of options. Cons-the ordering system is wonky if you order 3 tacos. You have to choose the same toppings for all 3 tacos. The meats do not have much flavor. I have been eagerly been awaiting the opening of District Taco right outside of the Dunn Loring Metro (on Prosperity). Looks like they are open or having a soft opening this week. Clean and new inside. There's a few counter seats across the windows and then about 4 long tables. You come in an order and they bring out the order with a number. I've never been to a District taco and I doubt they'd change their brand from my review but I think having a lot of topping choices makes for something bad decisions on the customers part. I added fresh jalepenos onto the "Mexican" style which had a few seeds left and it was too spicy and made my experience less pleasing. The carnitas were my favorite taco with really tender juicy meat. I usually really like Al Pastor (the pork with pineapples) and it was a bit dry and I've had better. The carne asada was a bit dry and not super flavorful. I would give it another shot though because there could be some quality control. We also had chips and salsa. The chips were really good. There's also a salsa bar, but if you order the chips and salsa they will bring a big cup size salsa. I wish they brought it out earlier or given it when we paid so we could munch while waiting. Looks like it will be a popular and convenient place for people to drop in on after work.
