She already gave me racist vibes and when I went in there I was the only African American. She didn't greet me, she handed me the bag she created and said you can heat the containers up. Now why in the entire fu€k would a restaurant even think this was okay to serve a customer? I don't care how much I paid. How does this even go together, if this is what you're serving customers on the App, I would suggest you remove yourself from it. Of course I didn't eat it. Wow, this was the worst meal that I've had in a long time. The aesthetic of the place was cool and the two people working up front were very friendly. I started with an espresso shot and it was pretty good. What came after was so awful that it's comical. My fiancee ordered the chicken and dumplings with collards and I got the pot roast "birria" burrito with a side of cucumber salad. The chicken and dumplings tasted like dish water, and somehow wasn't even salted at all. Then the greens.. what a disgrace. Canned collard greens that tasted like the can and were somehow also sickly sweet. Idk how you would even achieve that. My fiancee left most of the food on the plate after trying to choke it down. The "birria" burrito consisted of over 50% plain rice, the rest was carrots and dry, bland pot roast. No sauce, no salsa or sour cream which was advertised, no consome.. there was literally nothing anywhere remotely adjacent to birria involved. Calling it birria is like calling frozen lasagna traditional Italian food, but at least the frozen lasagna might taste good. It was also served with tots instead of fries and sadly they were the best thing on the plate. I had to ask the server for some hot sauce to make the burrito edible. Birria is so good and calling that atrocity birria on the menu is absolute disrespect to Mexican culture. Somehow the worst thing we had was the cucumber salad. Imagine cucumber slices and onion tossed with the loose, disgusting, low grade "balsamic" vinegar from Sysco and nothing else. They were inedible. I never waste food but we left the majority of it behind. I have been managing restaurants for almost a decade and can tell you that whoever is running this place now is running it into the ground, serving low quality product without even a modicum of effort to make it taste good. If we had one or two bad items I would have let the server know but with the entire meal being this awful we didn't even waste our time. Looking at the other reviews this seems to be a theme after the last change in ownership. The only positive here was the front of house staff who was working hard and was very nice. I definitely do not want them to catch any heat with this review because the blame is entirely on management for allowing such a sad excuse for food to be served. But then said W/B went to the (visible) kitchen window and started smoking her vape indoors. She and the other waitresses stood there, looking over the crowd in conversation at one point...so that was another 5-8 mins or so that we waited on the Bloody to be brought over. - I got a breakfast/brunch bowl that had "root veggies, breakfast potatoes, roast beef, and eggs. I asked for the ROOT VEGGIES to be on the side. The other W/B brings it out and says a passive aggressive, "so who had the deconstructed breakfast hash?" I almost didn't say anything because I was confused - she had three separate plates in her hands...surely it couldn't have been for me? BUT, it was. Plate 1: roast beef; plate 2: eggs; plate 3: potatoes AND the root veggies. I know how a potato grows, but it was listed separately from the root veggies (carrots, squash, parsnip...weirder breakfast hash things). I was a little confounded because I didn't want the root veggies, but her comment made me wanna send it back. She acted like I was being complicated. - Last complaint is that at the back bar, right on the inside OF the bar + to the left is a short, stainless steel surface. Our same W/B w/ the colored hair that vapes in the kitchen couldn't help but put her FOOT up on this surface. This was my second time here and honestly it is good but well not that good that it would be in my regular rotation. Maybe I haven't tried THE DISH that would keep me coming back. I like the homey feel and comfort food they offer but it's always a lil short on flavor for my taste. This time I had the grilled chicken livers with carrots and pinto beans. All entrees come with a deviled egg and fresh biscuit drizzled with honey butter. My livers were good but not KNOCK your sock off good as they were over cooked and slightly dry. I didn't pick up on much seasoning either. Their carrots were really tasty and that was my take away after my first visit. The pinto beans were under cooked and had no seasoning. Once I salted and peppered them they were much better. It would be great if they offered Chow Chow with the pintos as that would take them to the next level. :) My hubby had the blackened salmon and seem to enjoy it for the most part. I loved Dish, but wow the customer service I witnessed today was insane. I walked in and it took a hot minute to be helped. Was sat and the waitress disappeared had to flag her down to put in an order. Clearly a bit understaffed even though they were almost completely empty. What is crazy though is witnessing the owner argue with the table next to me about the shrimp and grits. The table wasn't happy with the food after having ordered it in the past- instead of replacing it they said they can order something else at a 25% discount. He refused to take it off the bill and said it's the cost of business. The owner said they have used the same recipes for 20 years and basically walked away saying if the table decided to order something else to let him know. Y'all this table handled it so graciously and remained so kind to the waitress who had to make up for the lack of service of the owner who was hiding in the bar. The poor guy didn't get anything to eat and had to pay for a dish they sent back. I felt bad for the guy. Y'all I used to eat here weekly in 2016 - the food I had today was terrible in comparison. The biscuit was dry. The deviled egg was subpar. The collards tasted of sugar - I'm still scratching my head on that one. They no longer carry blackberry jam for the biscuits and instead have cheap strawberry jelly, which isn't the end of the world but I think it speaks volumes to the change of ingredients and quality of food. The food is not the Dish of yesterday and with the management and lack of customer service I saw today - it is clear why. There used to hardly be a day you could walk in this place between 11-2 and it wasn't crazy busy with a wait. The waitress I spoke to was convinced people aren't coming in because of COVID, but what I witnessed today I'm willing to venture there are other reasons. Spoke to the owner directly to let him know how crazy it was to watch a business treat customers so poorly over a bowl of grits (think about how cheap grits are y'all). He was cordial with me, but not very receptive to the feedback. The owner apparently has owned Dish for two years and also owns Sweet Lew's - which I've heard good things about from friends who still live locally. Hopefully they have better service and food than what I experienced today at Dish. The coffee, as well as their Bloody Mary are pretty good - nothing fancy, but still good. DO NOT SKIP OVER THE COLLARD DIP - it's fantastic! Dish use to be my favorite place to go it got sold and couldn't be more tasteless and has none of the amazing comfort food it was known for . I was there on a Friday and there was only one other customer in the restaurant our meatloaf wasn't good and we worried if it was suitable to eat.The waitress/manager gladly took it back and repllaced it with shrimp on top if rice that was an insult to Southern low country cooking. Dish is a wonderful find in Charlotte. It is eclectic, but only to a certain extent. The dishes are purely Southern, but only if your grandmother was a hippy. When you enter Dish, you will have to stand at the door and look around for a minute. The outside doesn't do justice to the interior. It's really very fun and funky. The waitstaff is much the same. Each is an individual and the times I've been, quite nice and helpful. We tried the Fried Green Tomatoes for our appetizers. They were tart and crispy, and perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of crunch from the golden brown spheres. These are served with a very refreshing horseradish sauce that is spiked with dill. For my lunch, I chose the soup and salad, since I was a little full from the Fried Green Tomatoes. That was kind of dumb, in retrospect. The salad was fine, with the homemade Ranch dressing, which is always a must, but the soup was oddly chunky and not velvelty smooth. I just couldn't get a taste for it. And Tomato basil soup is my favorite, so that is really saying something. As you can see from the picture, my plate came with a deviled egg. Creamy and rich, it was delicious. No matter. My son got the Chicken and Dumplings which arrived with fresh fruit and a huge biscuit, and of course, the deviled egg. The dumplings were soft yet chewy, with plenty of tender chicken. It was nicely seasoned and very thick. The fresh fruit was a disappointment. Does anyone really like cantaloupe? The biscuit was fluffy and warm and the top was glistening with butter. It was just good food. Amazing, inviting place for brunch & lunch. Totally unassuming from the outside, but the vibe on the back patio is perfect. Our server Lee had us feeling right at home, had great recommendations & info about everything on the menu. The drink special when we visited was a watermelon spritzer, with fresh watermelon juice & basil Lee picked from the patio garden when we ordered. So refreshing. I read they were serving items from both restaurants out of the Dish kitchen. I was pretty excited to learn this! Our first recent order about a week ago (in Covid times-so curbside pick up) was decent-I got the fried chicken sandwich with bacon. It was good-although I did not realize the bacon was bacon "jam" as the menu just said bacon. I did not want bacon jam, but the sandwich was pretty good regardless. I'm just not a fan of sweet on my savory sandwich but that's just personal preference. I just wish the menu had specified because I would have chosen something else. My sides were house made chips which were good, but would have been better with a side of ranch or any kind of dip. I also got the house made pickles- I love pickles but man they were super vinegary-like mouth puckering, jaw tightening. Again, had I known I would have chosen something else as a side. Just got home from second carry out order. One of the specials today was country fried steak, which is a favorite. It's actually the reason we chose to go there. We both got the steak with mashed potatoes & green beans. We asked for mashed potatoes with gravy & it doesn't say that on menu-it just says mashed potatoes, but we were hoping for some of the gravy from the steak-we did not get it, but that's not a big deal. The deviled egg that accompanies all their dishes was upside down on some paper covering the hot food so the filling was basically soup that sat on top of said paper when I picked the egg up-still, not that big of a deal (it's "free"). The biscuit that comes with most dishes was perfect-tasty & fluffy. The green beans were pretty good. The steak was ok, not very flavorful. Which was disappointing but still not a dealbreaker. It took at least 20 minutes for the server to come take our drink orders. An indication of what was to come. 3. Speaking of the sever, they were very impersonal and also had a moldy/musty scent. I decided to order the brisket skillet and was immediately told "we're out of that." Ok--luckily I was deciding between that and the County Breakfast so no biggie. The sever did not check on us or refill our drinks during the hour that we were there. It gets worse. 4. Not only did we wait an hour sipping now watered down iced tea, we never received our orders. Even us repeatedly glancing over at them didn't entice them over to check on us or provide an update on our food. At the 55-minute mark the server strolls over with the sloppiest plated, runniest, grey matter looking "deviled eggs" I have ever seen. They mumbled something about "they are resolving an issue with the order" and I guess they were trying to offer the eggs as a consolation prize. No thanks. We suspect the order was never input because the table of 6 that came in after our party of two were halfway through their meal by the time we walked out. 5. When we told the server we didn't want the eggs and were leaving they just said "ok" and took the plate back to the kitchen and dryly told them to cancel our order. Great food, great service and highly recommended!!! Fried green tomatoes and candied bacon outstanding and the country fried steak was just delicious!!! Thank you and will stop by again next time I am in the area. read more
