Sweet & Sour Meatloaf
Savannah H.

My friend was playing a show in Charlotte last Friday night at Petra's Bar. After her set, I went to find some dinner. I looked on Yelp. I found this place called Dish. It looked like southern goodness. I decided to try it out. I walked down the street and found Dish pretty easily. I went inside. It looked empty. I saw a sign that said "See Bartender for Table." There was no one in there. I looked and saw a sign up by the ceiling that said "Bar," so I headed that way. There's a back room with a second bar and tables. The bartender told me to pick a table. I found a booth in the back corner. Perfect for me as I was eating alone and wanted to people watch. I ordered the sweet and sour meatloaf. It was so good. It was sweet but with a kick. I'm very sensitive to spicy food, however I could eat this. It was too good to pass up on. It came with a nice big moist biscuit, a deviled egg, and a side of carrots. So good. I'm so glad I found this place. I don't know if I'll be back because I live in Charleston. I would recommend this place to any southern food lover! Did not disappoint!

What a slept on spot in Plaza Midwood. A menu full of southern staples: fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken &dumplings, country fried steak etc. This un-assuming spot has all you need for a great meal with friends and family, or some late night eats(they offer an all-day breakfast menu and are open until 1:30am!). Affordable prices across the board with a nice selection of beers or mixed drinks. Try the candied bacon and make sure to funk it up!

I couldn't find anything open in the Nora area late night but dish I was so intrigued by the ambiance of dish i loved it. The food was ok nothing i would go back for in my opinion the potato balls where really good tho super crispy and flavorful i had the chicken antree and it was definitely under seasoned the Mac was okay it was just cold my boyfriend said the chicken sandwich was good ! The server was friendly.

Fried green tomatoes with horseradish and dill dip. Almost didn't get a picture it was so good.

We came here with it being on the Tripple D list. Let me tell ya it didn't disappoint even down to the coffee.

Pot roast, seasonal salad (tomato & basil), fried chicken

We hadn't been to Dish since they were reopened under new management and decided to pop by last night for dinner. It was even better than I remembered! Truly the best place in the area to get some classic comfort food dishes. I ordered the pot roast (a little on the salty side but that was perfect with the less salty mashed potatoes), and it came with a biscuit, deviled egg AND a side (I tried the seasonal salad, which was an incredibly fresh little cherry tomato, basil & balsamic masterpiece). So good. My husband got a Higher Ground IPA to drink and had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes, which he enjoyed as well. I love that they serve breakfast all day as well - definitely need to keep that in mind! And next time I'm definitely saving room for dessert - everything in the case looked so, so tasty. The staff are really friendly and welcoming too, and the space just feels like you're stepping back in time into a homey country restaurant (with a fun late-night bar in the back!). We are already pumped to come back and try some more of the delicious-sounding menu items (like the chicken & dumplings, Cajun seasoned meatloaf and pecan-crusted pork tenderloin!). Keep up the awesome cookin', Dish!

The dish used to be one of my most favorite spots!! I was so excited to be in the area to be able to stop by, I planned a team meeting there! I get there excited about what to order to only find out they are under new management. That's not always a bad thing but this time, the food just didn't taste the same; not even close. I initially got the chicken and dumplings and I think I tasted paprika in it. Yep paprika...it's like when people put raisins in potato salad;just why? Also it just was not tasty at all. Same with the Cajun Meatloaf. Why ruin such a wonderful staple that they had. It was way to spicy and no sauce which made it dry. One of my colleagues said the shrimp & grits was really good and the presentation of it was beautiful and well done. I exchanged my chicken & dumplings for the fried chicken and it was great! Just the right amount of Crisp and it was juicy and tender. Our waitress was really sweet and understanding. I hope that they go back to some of the same great meals that brought me back to it.

The service is outstanding...the fried green tomatoes were hot, fresh, crisp and awesome. The main entree that I had which was the fish and grits, I did not enjoy. The grits were good but the sauce was nothing but tomatoes and onion broth that to me over powered the entire dish. And the shrimp lacked season and appeared to be steamed. I would have preferred grilled or blackened. My other table mate seemed to like his shrimp and grits. My other friend had salmon, cauliflower rice with spinach and it looked great. I also had a Whoopie Pie on my way out that was delicious. I will try them again but will not order the shrimp and grits again

Why would you send out a BURNT BISCUIT like this? Everything else was good, but this small detail.

We are fans of Dish and sadly we've noticed an obvious decline in the quality of the food yet an obvious increase in the price of the food. It's frustrating having to pay more for food that's not as good as it should be. The attention to detail is no longer there and honestly it looks like it's on their last leg. I'd like to take a moment to recognize our server Christina who was remarkable! Very attentive, friendly and welcoming. She deserves acknowledgment. On to the food which we enjoy, but it's the little details that can ruin a good meal. Like for example the incredibly HARD and STALE biscuit that's served with your meal. How can such a simple food item like a biscuit be ruined? And where's the attentiveness of the kitchen staff to let a BURNT biscuit reach any table. Unacceptable! Also I notice a significant increase in the prices yet my country fried steak was much much smaller than usual. So you're increasing prices but cutting my steak in half? Not cool! I think we'll be giving Dish a long break and testing out other Diners in Charlotte. They have gotten too complacent.

I would not come back here sadly. :( My partner and I went for a date in April and were very excited! The atmosphere was cute and service was quick and helpful. That said, the food was just not up to par or worth the price. I got meatloaf and my partner got a burger. Both of us felt that those things were...fine. They were okay. I felt like the sauce on my meatloaf really clashed. But the reason I'm leaving this review is to tell people not to get the mac n cheese. It was the saddest mac n cheese I have ever seen. BARELY any cheese. Mostly just plain, warm noodles. So bizarre I took a photo for evidence. Hope this restaurant turns the food quality around, so much potential at this location!

The tater tots and sweet potato gnocchi were absolutely incredible, and honestly, every dish we tried was memorable. The Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese are also standouts. If you're going with a group, sharing plates is definitely the move so you can try a little bit of everything. And if it's your first time visiting, the fried chicken is a must. To finish, get the banana pudding. Trust me. Our server, Sebastian (we've had him twice now), was amazing both times.. attentive, personable, and always on top of anything we needed. The atmosphere ties it all together: dim lighting, cozy vibes, and the perfect spot to settle in for elevated comfort food. A charlotte staple

This was such a disappointment. found this place on tik tok and the found was absolutely horrible…read more I ordered the haber dish with a chicken thigh , macaroni and cheese"dressed greens" the chicken here is 70% fried breading and 30% stringy, unflavored chicken. the mac and cheese was decent! the dressed greens were literally cut off ends of romaine, dont waste your time. We also shared green beans and Brussel sprouts . the green beans were charred on the outside and undercooked ok the inside. The brussel sprouts were cooked to a crisp and lacked flavor. My boyfriend had the OG chicken sandwich and he couldnt finish/ stomach it, this includes the burned fries that were served with it. The restaurant itself is nice, I don't think their AC was working but its got a cool rustic look. Our server was kind and attentive as well. Maybe they had an off day but this was a pretty big waste of a $60+ meal.

Despite being one of our staple restaurants for decades, we haven't been back in a long while…read more(mostly due to the distance factor)...and when we did, I was quite disappointed. First of all, they're no longer open for dinner...but just open for for lunch. Luckily, business still seemed good for lunch...as it was a packed house! However, there were some changes (for the worse). First of all, one of the hallmarks of Lupie's was the loud, overhead music. Granted, I didn't always love the music selection (as many tended to be Rockabilly), but music was part of what made Lupie's a fun place to be. Well, this time around, we could barely hear the music from where we were seated (downstairs). The vibe has completely changed from its "Heyday". Once a hipster hangout, the place has become a casual family spot now...with many older folks as well. I guess this may explain the reduction of music. *SIGH* Then the service. First of all, Lupie's has never been the place for sweet, friendly hospitality or anything like that. In fact, the service was always quite swift...but the waiters here have always been competent. Well, this time, it was altogether different. This older guy that showed us to the table was also our waiter. Again, we didn't expect any friendliness...and that wasn't the issue. What was the issue?? He was running around like crazy, sweating the whole time! It was obvious they were short staffed, and I get that...but because he was near hyperventilating (literally running and sweating!), it made me (and surely others?) quite anxious throughout. Definitely NOT a relaxing dining with all of that going on. Plus, I couldn't even get his attention for iced tea refill. At one point, I had to raise my voice to get his attention to order dessert...and he basically snapped back at me. Then as if that wasn't rude enough, hear me out on this! When I finally placed the order ("Kuchen", this peach cobbler dessert), he rushed that back to us WITH HIS THUMB INSIDE THE LITTLE BOWL...NOT ONLY TOUCHING THE FOOD, BUT SMEARING THE WHIPPED CREAM WITH IT. it was disgusting!! I thought about asking him to bring us another one...but decided to scoop out one third of the dessert off instead. I mean, how crude of a service was that?!? Beyond gross! Thank God, the foods still tasted the same...well, almost. I had my usual Texas Chili Mac...and while the meat still tasted good, it was a tad more salty than usual. Also, they no longer use the thicker noodles...a big letdown as far as I'm concerned.. Portions have decreased over the years as well...which was fine actually. The pricing was still quite friendly. As much as I love (LOVED!) Lupie's over the past 3-4 decades, I just can't ignore this. You do not stick your finger into your guest's foods! How repulsive is that?!?!?!? I hate to do this, but for once, our experience merited 1 star, but considering our long history with Lupie's, I'm being generous with 2 stars. I mean, FINGER INTO OUR FOODS....and not even being aware of doing it because of all the rushing about so manically?!? I call this REALLY BAD SERVICE. I'm seriously hoping that things change for the better again. I mean, I hope the management reads this, and informs the staff members not to touch the customers' foods, for one. Also, it would make for a nicer dining experience if the waiter didn't run around sweating so much. Of course, the place could definitely use another waiter or a hostess...as that may prevent all the manic running around (?!?). I seriously hope to upgrade this review the next time...if the place is still open, that is. I'm just wondering if they're in the process of closing down altogether, given the lesser hours. Honestly, as much as I appreciated this restaurant for decades, I can't deal with the running around sweating, barking and "FINGER-IN-YOUR-FOOD" service. We may give this place at one more try in the future (if open)...but if I see this type of repulsive service again, I vow never to return.

Lupie's Café has been serving up homestyle comfort food for over 36 years, and it's easy to see why…read moreit's still going strong. From the outside, the building gives off pure dive diner energy with faded paint, a crooked sign, and the kind of place your dad probably grabbed lunch at in the '90s. Inside, the vibe is no-frills. Crinkled paper menus printed in black and white, booths that have seen better days, and a focus on food, not aesthetics. They're known for chili: Texas, Cincinnati, Southern, and Vegetarian...and yes, you can sample all four. The Cincinnati style had that Greek cinnamon-tomato flair (not my favorite). Southern was mellow. Texas brought the heat. I ended up mixing the Texas and Southern to balance things out. That combo got ladled over a massive bed of mac and cheese, then topped with a mountain of shredded cheddar and a scoop of sour cream. I skipped the raw onions and got a slice of cornbread on the side, which was a bit dry for me. Service was top-tier. Genuinely friendly and tag-teamed by servers who kept things moving. One of them looked like Jack Black, which he admitted he's heard before. The menu is affordable and portions are huge. Every table around me looked like Thanksgiving. This might not be a weekly stop for me, but I'm glad I finally made it. Lupie's is a nostalgic, no-BS staple that's earned its long-standing reputation.
