After reading a couple blogs about restaurant culture in Charlotte, this place stood out since it frequently made the list. See this, I knew I had to give it a try. Before we even arrived to the restaurant, we had a wonderful time walking through 4th Ward and admiring the beautiful houses. Alexander Michael's is located in a house that is equal parts beautiful and characterful. Upon entrance, I felt welcomed by the moody lighting, decorations, and cleanliness of the establishment. The waitress and bartender both greeted us. There is plenty of memorabilia, photos, and other keepsakes to gaze at throughout the restaurant. I had seen a lot about their spicy crab soup so I knew I had to start out with a bowl of it. The bowl came out quickly and enough cannot be said about how delicious it was. Perfect level of spice, consistency, and a flavor that would rival a seafood restaurant closer to the water. After this, I decided to eat their special, a Meatloaf Sandwich. Not my first choice, but after the waitress explained the dish and communicated how delicious it was, I knew I had to try it. I also opted for a side of their Cajun Fries which I have seen a lot of people rave about. The food came out after about 10 minutes. The presentation was beautiful for one, but there was also just a melodic rhythm felt throughout the dish from the cut of the sandwich to the layer of seasoning on the fries. I don't think I have ever seen "pub food" so beautifully prepared before. The sandwich was incredibly and as were the fries. I feel like I could ramble on and on about how incredible of a restaurant this is. From the kind and personable staff, to the wonderful vibes radiating from the place that foster conversation and good times. I understand why this place has stayed in business for so long. You won't be disappointed trying out this restaurant which is a wonderful representation of Charlotte and its culture. read more

Al Michael's has always been one of my absolute Charlotte favorites! This European-style pub offers amazing food and fantastic vibes. The food, service, and overall experience have always been top-notch. I don't know how they make their Cajun fries, but I can confidently say they are truly some of the best fries I have ever had! And don't even get me started on the cucumber dill dressing--it is hands-down the best version of this dressing I have ever experienced. Honestly, it is worth visiting for this dressing alone! Menu Favorites: I have never had a dish I didn't like here. Alexander Michael's is one of those neighborhood spots that feels like old Charlotte in the best way. Tucked into Fourth Ward, it's dark, cozy, a little quirky, and packed with locals. Parking is definitely a challenge and there's no outdoor seating, but once you settle in with a cold beer and some comfort food, you kind of forget about all of that. We shared a fresh salad, split a burger with crispy onion rings, and finished with a huge slice of carrot cake that absolutely delivered. I also had a giant Hefeweizen that hit the spot perfectly. The food is simple, hearty pub fare done well. Prices are fair, portions are generous, and everything feels approachable and unpretentious. If you're looking for flashy, this probably isn't your place. But if you want a relaxed neighborhood tavern with solid food, good drinks, and character, Alexander Michael's is worth a visit. We were worried about parking and wait time since they don't do reservations and it's residential, but we didn't have an issue at all. It's a bit small inside, but they make it work. Our waitress was knowledgeable and quick. I ordered a Tito's lemon drop. It was a bit weak on flavor and alcohol. Wouldn't get again. I ordered the blackened catfish sandwich without sauce and tomato. The onion and lettuce leaf made it fresh. The catfish was seasoned well. Could use a bigger kick of spices for my taste. And it was really juicy. Made the brioche bun soggy actually, but it's understandable. My fiancé ordered the what it is. Portion was huge considering. And it was flavorful. Enjoyed dinner here the other night for the first time and would definitely return! Lots of classic options - pasta, sandwiches, salads and a full bar. It's in a residential area, basically a repurposed house, so when I arrived, I drove past it by accident! The inside itself is pretty casual and unassuming/no frills. Not too busy on a Thursday around 7pm so we got a two top immediately. Our waitress was friendly and attentive as we ordered our drinks and then split the chicken quesadilla. For entrees, we tried the feta pasta and a BYO with blackened chicken and cream sauce. Everything was tasty and portions were huge. Had plenty for a late night snack/lunch the next day! I love this place so much. I always feel like I'm walking into a friend's home. It's cozy, welcoming, and relaxed. The service is warm and attentive without being overbearing, and the food is delicious and comforting. Tonight we reached order the spicy crab soup because it's too good to share and then we split the honey chicken pasta which the kitchen was nice enough to split it for us. Looking for a place to eat late Friday afternoon uptown. Came here strictly because of the reviews. Our experience was in line with the majority of reviews. I had vegan burrito and it was AMAZING! I don't eat a lot of meat so when I'm out eating with hubby I'm used to not being impressed with selections I want to eat. There's actually a few selections on the menu that made it hard for me to decide. Now I have a reason to come. What I liked about the burrito is that it was sooo flavorful. It was also a huge portion size. I didn't even get a side and I still couldn't eat it all. We started with potato wedge appetizers. They were yummy and not your average 'potato wedges'. There were probably at least 6. My husband had pasta which we both thought was delicious. I think my next try will be the veggie burger which I server told me was made in house. Alexander Michaels is a wonderful staple in uptown. If you want good down home cooking and old-fashioned service, and rustic home setting that is cozy and clean. I recommend this place. The service is unbeatable, I love it every time I go someone waits on me with a smile. Their bar serves very good drinks and it's a good place to sit with friends and family to sit and chat. You'll always be surrounded by laughs and smiles. It does get a little loud but it's good loud because everybody's happy! I highly recommend this place Tuesday through Saturday. They're not open Sunday and Monday, but they do take only call in orders that you can come and pick up. It's worth it! read more

Another amazing experience at Alexander Michaels. We ordered the hummus to start. It was tasty and delicious. Definitely order it with the veggies and pita we tried the honey glazed chicken pasta dish and burrito. Both portions were excellent and we have leftovers for tomorrow. I've known about Alexander Michael's for about 30 years. It has always been a great place to go for lunch or to spot up for a drink. It's such a cozy neighborhood pub that is always busy but never over the top. The food is absolutely fantastic! If you've never been definitely get the What It Is. This is their Cajun Chicken Pasta and their signature cornerstone dish. The chicken was well seasoned and juicy. The pasta had just enough kick not to be obnoxious. Just the same as when I first tasted it. The service is always friendly and timely. Allison took great care of me at the bar even during a busy night. Review update. I had the best experience here a few weeks ago. The bartender was incredibly friendly, and the service was excellent!! I sat at the bar. The whole restaurant is such a cozy and inviting space. The neighborhood and the charming building it's located in add so much character to the overall experience. For my meal, I ordered the build your own pasta with fettuccine, garlic cream sauce, and blackened shrimp, and it completely exceeded my expectations. It was absolutely delicious! The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the shrimp were seasoned just right. One note: it can get a bit chilly at the bar in the winter with the door opening, but it's a minor issue given how wonderful everything else is. I'm already looking forward to coming back soon! A true hole in the wall! We came across this tavern while walking through the Fourth Ward Secret Garden Tour. It was a nice stop after walking through the neighborhood. It's tucked away on a corner, I would say street parking only, though you could Uber and it's pretty central within Fourth Ward. We ordered drinks and an app - the DC Potato Wedges - which really hit the spot. Prices were reasonable and the building itself is pretty cool, dating back into the 1800s. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Definitely enjoyed the experience and would love to return to check out more of the menu! read more

This place has been an Uptown staple for over 40 years and it's easy to see why. No fancy tables or drinks, just good food, beer and great staff! I went in before the football games yesterday and even at 3pm on a Saturday there was a good crowd! Testament to how good they are. The vibe is casual and super relaxed so no need to dress up I got the London Broil sandwich medium rare. It was huge! Packed with perfectly tender steak with cheese and peppers. I was blown away. I could barely finish it. If you find yourself in Uptown, get there. It's one of the few local restaurants that have been around for over 40 years, it deserves our business! read more

My dad was in town and he love German beer so he was immediately pleased with the option to have Franziskaner on draft. He explained to us that they even had the correct glass to serve it in. We ordered the cajun pasta which was flavorful and fresh but everyone at the table raved about their dish. My husband had the pesto pasta and appreciated that there were plenty of vegetarian options. Be sure to read the history on the menu as you'll find out more about the bathroom pole, the cooler and history of the building. The history makes this place even more special! It has a neighborhood feel and the staff is very friendly. My favorite dish here is "What it is" aka creamy Cajun chicken pasta. If I order an appetizer, I either ask for them to split the dish in the kitchen or take some home for lunch. House wine by the glass is a great price, especially for people who forget to drink while eating like me! We tried this new spot for the first time. It was really good. We loved the local pub vibe. It was the only restaurant and near other neighborhoods. The menu had a lot of options, but we went with the special. It was so big we had to eat it with a fork. The fries were good, but the Cajun fries were a little salty for me. In town visiting and stumbled upon this place while biking. We tried the spicy crab soup, which was excellent, the burger, and tuna melt. The tuna melt was served cold, the cheese wasn't melted but the bread was toasted, very weird in my option. Burger was a typical burger.
