Enjoyed dinner here the other night for the first time and would definitely return! Lots of classic options - pasta, sandwiches, salads and a full bar. It's in a residential area, basically a repurposed house, so when I arrived, I drove past it by accident! The inside itself is pretty casual and unassuming/no frills. Not too busy on a Thursday around 7pm so we got a two top immediately. Our waitress was friendly and attentive as we ordered our drinks and then split the chicken quesadilla. For entrees, we tried the feta pasta and a BYO with blackened chicken and cream sauce. Everything was tasty and portions were huge. Had plenty for a late night snack/lunch the next day! Glad this is one of the first new places I've tried down in CLT!
Such a cute little pub. Very rustic. Definitely a hidden find and one we will surely be back to try again. The food was very reasonably priced and had great flavor.
I love this place so much. I always feel like I'm walking into a friend's home. It's cozy, welcoming, and relaxed. The service is warm and attentive without being overbearing, and the food is delicious and comforting. Tonight we reached order the spicy crab soup because it's too good to share and then we split the honey chicken pasta which the kitchen was nice enough to split it for us. The Christmas decor is a really nice festive touch that makes it feel extra cozy. Highly recommend!
Looking for a place to eat late Friday afternoon uptown. Came here strictly because of the reviews. Our experience was in line with the majority of reviews. I had vegan burrito and it was AMAZING! I don't eat a lot of meat so when I'm out eating with hubby I'm used to not being impressed with selections I want to eat. There's actually a few selections on the menu that made it hard for me to decide. Now I have a reason to come. What I liked about the burrito is that it was sooo flavorful. It was also a huge portion size. I didn't even get a side and I still couldn't eat it all. We started with potato wedge appetizers. They were yummy and not your average 'potato wedges'. There were probably at least 6. My husband had pasta which we both thought was delicious. I think my next try will be the veggie burger which I server told me was made in house. Can't wait!
The food was amazing and the service was Excellent! The ambiance was so relaxing. It was crowded but not a long wait.
Another amazing experience at Alexander Michaels. We ordered the hummus to start. It was tasty and delicious. Definitely order it with the veggies and pita we tried the honey glazed chicken pasta dish and burrito. Both portions were excellent and we have leftovers for tomorrow. Our server was very attentive and we were sat down quickly. Drinks were refilled often as well. The ambience is lovely, your neighborhood pub we cannot wait to come back again.
I don't t give 5 stars often because to me that is a "no improvement needed " but this place is a 5 star. Love the atmosphere, service, food and prices. This is a must go to in Charlotte!!
Located out of the way in a residential neighborhood, but worth going to. Expert bartender and friendly efficient waitress. Everything we ordered - wings, burger, salads - were fresh. Will be going back
A true hole in the wall! We came across this tavern while walking through the Fourth Ward Secret Garden Tour. It was a nice stop after walking through the neighborhood. It's tucked away on a corner, I would say street parking only, though you could Uber and it's pretty central within Fourth Ward. We ordered drinks and an app - the DC Potato Wedges - which really hit the spot. Prices were reasonable and the building itself is pretty cool, dating back into the 1800s. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Definitely enjoyed the experience and would love to return to check out more of the menu!
Review update. I had the best experience here a few weeks ago. The bartender was incredibly friendly, and the service was excellent!! I sat at the bar. The whole restaurant is such a cozy and inviting space. The neighborhood and the charming building it's located in add so much character to the overall experience. For my meal, I ordered the build your own pasta with fettuccine, garlic cream sauce, and blackened shrimp, and it completely exceeded my expectations. It was absolutely delicious! The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the shrimp were seasoned just right. One note: it can get a bit chilly at the bar in the winter with the door opening, but it's a minor issue given how wonderful everything else is. I'm already looking forward to coming back soon! Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for great food and a warm, cozy atmosphere. And decent prices for what you get!
Outstanding menu items in a classy pub in Charlotte. We came for a late lunch and were not disappointed one bit. The wait staff were professional and polite and the kitchen did a bang-up job on our dishes (pictured). We will definitely return here soon.
I've known about Alexander Michael's for about 30 years. It has always been a great place to go for lunch or to spot up for a drink. It's such a cozy neighborhood pub that is always busy but never over the top. The food is absolutely fantastic! If you've never been definitely get the What It Is. This is their Cajun Chicken Pasta and their signature cornerstone dish. The chicken was well seasoned and juicy. The pasta had just enough kick not to be obnoxious. Just the same as when I first tasted it. The service is always friendly and timely. Allison took great care of me at the bar even during a busy night. I'm so glad this place is still around to provide great food and great memories!
After reading a couple blogs about restaurant culture in Charlotte, this place stood out since it frequently made the list. See this, I knew I had to give it a try. Before we even arrived to the restaurant, we had a wonderful time walking through 4th Ward and admiring the beautiful houses. Alexander Michael's is located in a house that is equal parts beautiful and characterful. Upon entrance, I felt welcomed by the moody lighting, decorations, and cleanliness of the establishment. The waitress and bartender both greeted us. There is plenty of memorabilia, photos, and other keepsakes to gaze at throughout the restaurant. I had seen a lot about their spicy crab soup so I knew I had to start out with a bowl of it. The bowl came out quickly and enough cannot be said about how delicious it was. Perfect level of spice, consistency, and a flavor that would rival a seafood restaurant closer to the water. After this, I decided to eat their special, a Meatloaf Sandwich. Not my first choice, but after the waitress explained the dish and communicated how delicious it was, I knew I had to try it. I also opted for a side of their Cajun Fries which I have seen a lot of people rave about. The food came out after about 10 minutes. The presentation was beautiful for one, but there was also just a melodic rhythm felt throughout the dish from the cut of the sandwich to the layer of seasoning on the fries. I don't think I have ever seen "pub food" so beautifully prepared before. The sandwich was incredibly and as were the fries. I feel like I could ramble on and on about how incredible of a restaurant this is. From the kind and personable staff, to the wonderful vibes radiating from the place that foster conversation and good times. I understand why this place has stayed in business for so long. You won't be disappointed trying out this restaurant which is a wonderful representation of Charlotte and its culture. read more
Al Michael's has always been one of my absolute Charlotte favorites! This European-style pub offers amazing food and fantastic vibes. The food, service, and overall experience have always been top-notch. I don't know how they make their Cajun fries, but I can confidently say they are truly some of the best fries I have ever had! And don't even get me started on the cucumber dill dressing--it is hands-down the best version of this dressing I have ever experienced. Honestly, it is worth visiting for this dressing alone! Menu Favorites: I have never had a dish I didn't like here. My standout favorites and absolute go-tos are: The What It Is pasta, Penne Athena, Chicken breast sandwich, Reuben, and Chicken breast salad. They feature a great selection of drinks to pair with your meal, including an excellent variety of cocktails, wine, and both international and local craft beers. If you are looking for a spot where the food and neighborhood pub atmosphere are consistently phenomenal, this is it! read more

Alexander Michael's is one of those neighborhood spots that feels like old Charlotte in the best way. Tucked into Fourth Ward, it's dark, cozy, a little quirky, and packed with locals. Parking is definitely a challenge and there's no outdoor seating, but once you settle in with a cold beer and some comfort food, you kind of forget about all of that. We shared a fresh salad, split a burger with crispy onion rings, and finished with a huge slice of carrot cake that absolutely delivered. I also had a giant Hefeweizen that hit the spot perfectly. The food is simple, hearty pub fare done well. Prices are fair, portions are generous, and everything feels approachable and unpretentious. If you're looking for flashy, this probably isn't your place. But if you want a relaxed neighborhood tavern with solid food, good drinks, and character, Alexander Michael's is worth a visit. Life's too short to not eat well, Charlotte. read more

This place has been an Uptown staple for over 40 years and it's easy to see why. No fancy tables or drinks, just good food, beer and great staff! I went in before the football games yesterday and even at 3pm on a Saturday there was a good crowd! Testament to how good they are. The vibe is casual and super relaxed so no need to dress up I got the London Broil sandwich medium rare. It was huge! Packed with perfectly tender steak with cheese and peppers. I was blown away. I could barely finish it. If you find yourself in Uptown, get there. It's one of the few local restaurants that have been around for over 40 years, it deserves our business! read more

Always a great "come as you are" spot- great crab soup, fresh green salads and toppings, and comfort foods like stroganoff and meatloaf. The menu is condensed compared with other restaurants that boast novel-length offerings. Friendly, easy bartenders and waitstaff add to the ambience, whether seated at the bar or a table. Cozy, warm, and intimate setting for dining and drinks in the heart of 4th Ward. read more

The seating arrangements are tight, but it's a popular spot; I went for lunch on a Thursday, and it was packed. I ordered the Blackened Catfish Sandwich (Catfish fillet blackened and served on a Brioche bun with Jamaican relish, lettuce, tomato, onion, and Creole tarter sauce) and the Spicy Crab Soup as my side. The sandwich was delicious; the fish was seasoned well and had the perfect texture. The soup was good, but it wasn't really spicy nor did it have much crab. The service was nice, with our waitress checking on the table several times. read more

Another classic, love coming here. We always manage to sit at the same table. The waitresses are always nice and attentive here, the ambiance is always giving date night with a little hint of bar. The food is always great! My husband switched it up this time and had the stroganoff! Yum! read more
Wow - Alexander Michael's is a hidden gem. I've been here numerous times and highly recommend. It can be as casual as you want it to be or a great date spot. Be sure to read the history on the menu as you'll find out more about the bathroom pole, the cooler and history of the building. The history makes this place even more special! It has a neighborhood feel and the staff is very friendly. My favorite dish here is "What it is" aka creamy Cajun chicken pasta. If I order an appetizer, I either ask for them to split the dish in the kitchen or take some home for lunch. House wine by the glass is a great price, especially for people who forget to drink while eating like me! Also, I left my phone here once and the staff stayed after hours to wait for me to pick it back up. Even though my phone wanted to have a sleepover, they went above and beyond! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! It's a must stop every time you're in Charlotte. Incredible, friendly service and great food! The neighborhood bar is alive and well, but with elevated food and regular specials throughout the week. read more
We tried this new spot for the first time. It was really good. We loved the local pub vibe. It was the only restaurant and near other neighborhoods. The menu had a lot of options, but we went with the special. It was so big we had to eat it with a fork. The fries were good, but the Cajun fries were a little salty for me. I also found out there was a different dinner menu, so we may try to come back to try more. Our waiter was attentive and helpful with refills and checking on us. read more

Absolutely nailed it! The atmosphere, the service, the food. We visited Alexander Michael's on Saturday 03/22 and had a wonderful experience. My dad was in town and he love German beer so he was immediately pleased with the option to have Franziskaner on draft. He explained to us that they even had the correct glass to serve it in. We ordered the cajun pasta which was flavorful and fresh but everyone at the table raved about their dish. My husband had the pesto pasta and appreciated that there were plenty of vegetarian options. The highlight for me was the cheesecake dessert. The service was prompt and professional and we had a nice chat. Wonderful time! We decided to make this a tradition everytime parents visit! Thanks again! read more
Found this restaurant on Yelp while I was coming through the area and I now know why it has such high stars!! I'd definitely eat here again!! Food was amazing, staff so friendly and the food came out quick! We got fried pickles to start which were piping hot and oh so tasty! The ranch was great! I got the Honey Chicken Pasta which was in a bacon tomato cream sauce...IT WAS HEAVEN!!! I've never had a sauce that good before! My mom got the blackened catfish sandwich with broccoli slaw and she said it was so very good! Loved this place!! Please go give it a try! read more

Still an amazing gem in fourth ward. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu! The Ruben is always a classic, the crab soup has a bit of spice that will warm your soul, and the pasta salad is simple, yet delicious. Do yourself a favor and come here. read more
In town visiting and stumbled upon this place while biking. We tried the spicy crab soup, which was excellent, the burger, and tuna melt. The tuna melt was served cold, the cheese wasn't melted but the bread was toasted, very weird in my option. Burger was a typical burger. I will say, the prices are very fair, cheaper than the places uptown. Beers on draft are $7 each! read more

Where is the best place to park if visiting Alexander Michaels? Do they have enough parking there or are you parking on the street?
There is street parking and a small light just behind.
Could the restaurant accommodate one child (1 year old) and four adults?
Yes, they'd definitely be able to accommodate a group of 4 with a small child. Most of the tables (a combo of booths and free standing tables) seat 2-4 adults, but I have seen larger groups there and kids. It's just a bit crowded. Bringing in a…
