I had the pleasure of sitting at the sushi bar at Uchi with my dad, who was visiting from Rhode Island. I made the reservation about a month ago not quite knowing what to expect, but Chef Taylor and his team, along with our wonderful server, A'Lonna, exceeded any expectations we may have had. It wasn't just the food (which was absolutely incredible), but the kindness, generosity, and care from everyone that made the evening feel like so much more than a typical Saturday night out. It truly felt like an experience, one that I know will turn into a really special memory for both of us. My dad and I are both big food lovers and really appreciate a thoughtful, well-executed meal. Without exaggeration, this was easily the best meal I've had in the eight years I've lived in Charlotte. Thank you to the entire Uchi staff for creating such a memorable night. Service- our primary server who took our order, refilled our drinks, etc was very kind and attentive, no issues. Different servers bring out your food as the food is prepared and it was really nice that each server described the dish in detail when it was brought to our table, especially because it's easy to forget what exactly you ordered due to the many unique components to a lot of the dishes. Ambiance- large building with high ceiling, Japanese inspired interior, low lighting, and music. A really nice elevated vibe for a date or other special occasion. It's an ambience that makes you forget you're in the south, which is really nice if you're trying to escape the casual pub style southern eateries that dominate the area. Food was incredible. The portions are on the smaller side, depending on what you get, but if you value quality over quantity, you won't mind. I shared this with one other person and we both left feeling satisfied but not full. The hot rock with Australian wagyu was incredible. The beef was tender, not chewy at all, and the interactive experience of cooking the raw beef on the little hot stone was so satisfying. It comes with 2 sauces- kosho-tamari butter and whisky maple ponzu. The tamari butter elevated the beef to be that much more decadent and the flavor wasn't overpowering and complimented the beef so so well. The ponzu was also wonderful, but the sauce had stronger flavor and masked the natural flavor of the meat much more, not in a bad way, just an observation. The Hama chili was also a top dish for me this time. The hamachi is fresh, not fishy at all, and it paired so well with the ponzu and the orange. The kinoko usuzukuri is a seasonal mushroom dish and this time we had shaved king oyster mushroom with a white vinegar type of sauce. This was delicious, it was perfectly seasoned, and had bouncy texture as one would expect from a cooked mushroom. Don't underestimate the flavor of the vegetable dishes! Sasami yaki was the chicken and cilantro dish. This dish was nice, they give you quite a big portion of chicken including one drumstick. The two ends of the chicken were a bit overcooked but the middle sections were perfect. Despite the usage of cilantro as a garnish and as a sauce on the side, the overall presence of cilantro was very subtle. I actually think maybe too subtle? The flavor of a standard grilled/roasted chicken was the primary flavor and would be a very palatable option for anyone I think. Salmon crudo- fatty, delicious, and paired with a really nice curry-esque sauce and orange slices underneath the salmon. No notes. Had a similar vibe as the hama chili. Not sure you need to order both, just pick one. Pork flank- the flavor of this dish was incredible and everything paired so well together. The big downside was that the pork, while obviously cooked very well, was still very chewy. The flavor and the elements of the dish were very good so I would order it again just to see if maybe today was an off day. But be wary of that. The crispy tuna rice was good, but the exterior of the rice could've been crispier and I don't think it stands out amongst any generic crispy tuna rice that you can get elsewhere. It was good, but nothing special. Plus this might have been the smallest portion of food out of the several dishes we tried. Jasmine cream- this was 11/10. Would definitely order it again. The cilantro granita is liked a shaved ice and the flavor is clearly cilantro but it's subtle and it unexpectedly pairs super well with the rest of the dish. It's refreshing and perfect for the spring/summer time. The jasmine cream was also rich and delicious and the honey crumble on the bottom had a perfect satisfying crunch (and it stayed crunchy). Went to Uchi for my birthday dinner and had such a great experience from start to finish. Booking the reservation was super easy. When we arrived, we were greeted with a sweet little "Happy Birthday" card displayed at the table, which I thought was such a thoughtful touch and a really nice acknowledgment. Our server was amazing -- so attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful walking us through the menu and explaining the different dining options between à la carte and omakase (which I'll definitely be coming back to try). Throughout the night, we ordered a mix of dishes. Some highlights for me were the Hamachi Chili, the yellowtail nigiri, and the salmon toro nigiri (salmon belly). Yellowtail is my favorite fish and Uchi absolutely delivered. We also ordered the hot rock, short ribs, Hamachi crispy rice, spicy crunchy tuna roll, and oysters from the daily specials menu. The oysters were fresh, although on the smaller side. The hamachi crispy rice had a sauce that was kick to it - FYI. One thing that really stood out was how generous and hospitable the staff was throughout the evening. We received dishes for us to try including the tempura killer cauliflower and chicken karaage, which was such a nice surprise and made the experience feel even more special. I love the Thai chili flavors the chicken karaage had, and the pickled radish and cucumbers were refreshing with the dish. They treated me to a complimentary cocktail for my birthday called the Mitsu Mitsu and it was SO good -- if you like yuzu/citrus flavors, I highly recommend ordering it. I had *such* an incredible experience at Uchi that I had to share. We did the 9-course happy hour tasting, and every single dish was thoughtfully curated, beautifully presented, and honestly just so good. The pacing was perfect, it felt like a journey rather than just a meal. Each course built on the last, with a mix of flavors and textures that kept surprising us (in the best way). You can really tell how much care goes into both the food and the overall experience. ALL of the nigiri was SO SO FRESH and each bite was unbelievable. They fly in their fish every 2-3 from Japan! The gyutoro nigiri was one of the best bites I've ever had... I could cry thinking about how good it was :') The wagyu just melted and disappeared in your mouth. Please give me 5 more of these!!! Now we understand the hype behind the hama chili.. the combination with the ponzu, thai chili and orange made for a fresh, crisp, refreshing and light dish that had a sweetness to it and blended all ingredients together perfectly- YUM! So my boyfriend does NOT like any seafood and never has his whole life. However, I encouraged him to try some since it was a special occasion with such high quality fish. To both of our surprise, he actually enjoyed ALL of it! But especially the walu walu and hama chili. Turns out his palette only likes boujee, fresh fish and will not eat anything less smh. If you have anyone in your party that doesn't like seafood, there's still plenty for them to eat here. There wasn't a single dish that we didn't like. The only dish we would skip on next time would be the kinoko nabe and jasmine cream dessert; not because it wasn't good (they both were!), only because we loved the other dishes a lot more and rather try other fish focused dishes- that's truly where they shine. Uchiba upstairs was not open yet so we were unable to check it out but I expect it to be a ~viiibbeeee~ Other: It's a higher end, pricier restaurant. But the quality of their food is unmatched and you are getting what you're paying for- 100% worth the prices on their menu. Currently, their google/apple maps location does not take you to the correct spot. Uchi is NOT located at the Edison apartments. It's located in its own brick building across Commonwealth Ave from Harriett's Hamburgers. They're working on getting the map location updated with google + apple! Parking is in the parking garage by Harriett's. It is paid parking, not sure if Uchi validates or not (we didn't ask). For a new restaurant, they moved like a well oiled machine, from front of house, to somakase, to cocktails to the food and service. I loved they had free valet parking. First experience at Uchi was 10/10 but after my second experience I have to strongly advise everyone against the Happy Hour Tasting Menu, after doing the math we would have saved money just ordering everything à la carte, additionally the 'palate cleanser' which is just flavored ice is part of the tasting menu and it just felt like we were over promised and under delivered. The food was still great and the store is beautiful but I left disappointed and would recommend many other restaurants in Charlotte over Uchi: Oku has the same upscale vibe with amazing service and Yamazaru has some of the best quality sushi in Charlotte for a fraction of the price. read more

It's it's been quite a while since I felt the need or desire to write a review for a restaurant. However, I had the opportunity to visit Uchi in Plaza Midwood over the weekend and it was nothing short of amazing! Uchi opened March 31. Usually in the first few weeks restaurants have a bit of a growing pain trying to figure things out, so it's not always the best experience if you visit too soon after they open. This was not the case for Uchi. Service 9.2/10 The service was very good. However, if you are seated at the sushi bar, it's a very unique ordering experience. The actual sushi chefs, who are making sushi for the entire restaurant, are also the people who are taking your order for your food. This was a little confusing because there were a long period of time where nobody said anything and you were kind of trying to figure out what was going to happen, but when the sushi chefs engaged, they were super nice and willing to answer any questions. Food When sitting at the sushi bar, there is an option to let the sushi chef choose your courses for you once you tell him what your preferences are. What I told mine was that I do not like fishy fish nor do I like roe, although I do like caviar. He picked the perfect courses for me and there was not a bad course in the bunch. Hamachi sushi roll - was good not exceptional just a standard sushi roll, but very fresh, served with soy sauce. 7.5/10 Uchi salad - The vegetables are all rolled like a hand roll with the dressing and chili crisp in the base of the bowl. It was a unique presentation for a very toothsome salad with great flavors 8/10 Hama Chili - Yellowtail, ponzu, orange, Thai chili was a PERFECTLY balanced bite!! It was light, bright and delicious. I will order this every single time I visit. 9.5/10 Karage Chicken - i've had a lot of karage chicken over the years, but this was one of the top ones. The sauce was perfectly balanced. The thighs had a great crunch on the outside, but was still juicy on the inside complimented with a tasty sauce. 8/10 Hot Rock - Thin strips of Wagyu steak that you cook, at the table, on a hot stone. It is served with whiskey maple ponzu and tamari butter. It sounds simple, but this was pure heaven! It is such a perfect balance of flavors. I definitely preferred the butter over the ponzu, but there is nothing I would change about this dish at all. It's definitely worth having again and again. 9.8/10 Fried Milk Sundae - I don't even know how to explain this dish besides saying it was a whole party in my mouth... maybe even a rave .... or a mosh pit... I don't know, but it was DELECTABLE. There are these little fried balls filled with some sort of, served with ice cream, chocolate mousse, a brownie crisp, corn flakes, and more. They tell you to try to get a little of everything in your mouth at once, which sounds ridiculous, but when you do, it is an explosion of flavors and textures, and unlike anything I've ever experienced before! hands-down one of the best desserts I've had in at least five years. - 10/10 Price - I spent a little over $100 for this meal, but I'd definitely do it again!! 9/10 I definitely recommend this restaurant with no hesitation! ***************** Constructive Feedback - the only feedback I have I also shared with the maître D. The sushi bar most of the bar is mostly glass, so guests can see the chefs working, but there are sections of wood that you cannot see through or over. Do not place a single party in front of one of the wooden panels because not only can they not see, they don't have anybody to talk to to distract them and they're back is to the dining room (so they can't even people watch). This review is for Uchi, not Uchibā. It IS that good. Everything I had was good. You have to get the Uchi salad here. I know, a salad? Just trust me. This was the high light of the meal for me and I came in for sushi not salad, dafurk. The edamame is the best edamame I've ever had and I mean it's edamame how good could it be? They grilled theirs, which I've never had before and the grilled flavor of it was divine. The zero shen? Simple but divine. The hamachi with the ponzu and chili? First I want to explain for the last five years we have annually gone to the original Uchi when visiting our daughter. We always do the Chef's choice. So for our first visit to Uchi we wanted a direct comparison and ordered the same. The good, our waitress, Madison, was wonderful. The ambiance of the restaurant also very good. Now the not so good, Chef's. Choice at the restaurant is no where near what you have in Austin. One minor example, our meat was a chewy Denver steak rather than Wagu. Another example, we were served the same dish twice, at the same time. The next order to come out was the same, making 3, but our wonderful waitress, Madison saw it, apologized and quickly removed it. Overall out of 10 courses only 3 were truly worth it. In Austin, all 10 come out not only worth it but wowing us. Most people in CLT will think it's wonderful, but for us at that price it's back to Steak 48 and for sushi we will go to Oku. Uchi is positioned in a dope warehouse area in Charlotte and walking into the spot makes you feel like you are no longer in Charlotte. I do not know what it is, but the vibe is just different but in all the right ways!!! The food... there was not one dish that we both did not close our eyes and say "WOW". The staff... attentive and just overall perfection. Everyone was there to help and just so knowledgeable! Love love love!! We almost went back the next day! The only downsides were that the lighting felt a little too dark, and when the servers brought out the dishes, their descriptions were either too quick or too quiet to fully catch. So disappointed with my dinner at Uchi last night. The restaurant is lovely, but the food was not great. The crispy rice was soggy; the rock shrimp was incredibly spicy even though we were told it would not be. The sushi pieces came out warm. Our waitress said it was served that way because the rice is warm...but it was not. Overall, not worth the price and there is better sushi in Charlotte. read more

TL;DR: Came in hopeful, left underwhelmed. The ambiance does the heavy lifting, and the Surabashi cocktail upstairs at Uchiba was the actual highlight. A James Beard distinction set expectations the food couldn't meet. 2/5. The salmon belly sashimi was decent but portions were roughly half of what I've seen at comparable spots in Southern California, Tokyo, and Asian grocery counters. Not a great look at these prices. Fresh wasabi runs $7 for a tiny cup. Fine, charge what you want, but at that price at least dab some on each slice. Instead it arrived bare, and the green paste was hiding under the soy sauce cup with no mention from the staff. Took us embarrassingly long to find it. The concept is clear: cultivate exclusivity through small portions, premium pricing, and a room that photographs well. The ambiance is the main event and the food is supporting cast. This was my 3rd time at an Uchi location and it was just as amaze as the others! Service was wonderful. Servers are already super knowledgeable about the menu. We just came back from Tokyo so seeing they have options for fish flown from Japan was so fun! Our fave dish was the scallop nigiri The only confusing part about our visit was that the reservations are unclear about booking at Uchi or Uchiba (formal dinner or the more casual rooftop). I booked Uchi on Resy and somehow was directed to the upstairs Uchiba. The menu is a little different but regardless, it was a great time. read more

My husband got the crab roll and wagu hot rock which were also fantastic. Fried ice cream to finish. We were able to walk in at 7 pm on Saturday. They validate parking for 2.5 hours.
