We came in on a Sunday, and we were greeted and told to sit anywhere. When we sat, I found it hard to get into the seats and was offered another table that we were able to sit easy. She ordered the porkchops with fried okra. I order the gravy fries as an appetizer, and a big block burger with the standard lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo, mustard, and ketchup. The gravy fries came out so hot you can see the steam coming from them. The fries were fresh and the gravy was a good brown gravy. A definite reorder, if you ever go get it with cheese. The burger patty was huge, like the old home made thick patty. Juicy and it held it's own against the bun and condiments. The only downside is that the bun and condiments seem to disintegrate while eating the burger. The staff was attentive and very quick with our refills. While it is fun to watch Charlotte grow and see the mew exciting restaurants that have come along with that growth, it's absolutely necessary to pay homage to the classic staples! Diamond Restaurant is one such staple having been around for over 80 years! I was brought here by a friend who grew up in Charlotte because he was shocked to hear I had never been and insisted that I go with him for lunch. He was excited to show me as it was a favorite of his since childhood. We came in early for lunch so the place wasn't very crowded yet and we immediately found ourselves a booth. They lady who greeted us at the front brought us menus, took our orders and was very kind and attentive, I believe she might have been the owner. The place is a charming relic with photos and memorabilia on the walls that are testament to its long standing in the community. As we sat and ate lunch more hungry diners started streaming in, and the place became more and more lively. I ordered the double burger and it was wonderful! Also very reasonably priced. We had a couple beers enjoyed great food including some fried pickles and okra. I will for sure be back and only wish I lived close enough to walk as this is the kind of place I would love to be a regular at. They've been around for a long time for a reason and it's because they have great food, at reasonable prices, and friendly service. We love walking to The Diamond and eating outside as a family (me, my partner, our toddler and our dog). The food is plentiful and consistent, and the staff is always incredibly friendly and welcoming. The service is fast. And we love the come-as-you are ambiance of the whole space (indoor and outdoors). My favorite item is the Greek salad and I add grilled chicken. The salad is HUGE! Great diner in the center of plaza midwood! There is a very subtle Mediterranean vibe (they offer gyros) with the menu but it's mostly "southern" food. I had the hush puppies to start served fresh, fried, and filling! They came with ketchup and butter and were were a guilty pleasure treat. I had the fish sandwich for dinner. It comes ala carte- which is good because I was already getting full from the hush puppies! There were two fried fish filets on top of a soft bun. Yummy tarter sauce on the side. My husband and I indulged- we don't eat fried food often so this was really filling! I took half home. Service was so friendly. We were in and out quickly. Nothing like an old school restaurant to visit in a city that's being saturated by breweries and pizza joints. I got the salmon BLT, it was good but wasn't the best I've ever had. The menu is pretty simple, burgers, dogs and other sandwiches. I'd definitely go back and try more items. I went at lunch time around 1:30 and it was just a few more people inside. The place doesn't have a whole lot of seats so thankfully there was no lunch rush I ran into. They do have some patio seating that will be awesome when weather is warm. Tried this place for the first time, and it somehow fits the plaza midwood vibe perfectly. Walk-in in, you are transported back in time, but in the best way possible. The service was friendly and prompt, and they even have high chairs for kids! We started with the hush puppies, which arrived fresh from the fryer with that slightly sweet, fried goodness. The Diamond has been around long enough to be a potential classic. It's in a reasonably good spot to draw a lot of business without being overrun. But the place and the product need some polish. It starts with the service, which was generally slow in all respects. We asked for extra napkins that we desperately needed, yet it took nearly the entire meal to get them. The staff also struggled with getting our bill right on their POS terminal; if we had been in a rush, things would have been really problematic. The layout of the space is rather tight, so it doesn't take long for this place to fill up. The fixtures need some repair and replacement work, but things seemed clean. In remembrance of the former Penguin that once reigned just down the street, we ordered a few Big Block burgers as made famous by that institution. The patties we received were certainly full sized, but were dry and a bit boring. The chili on my Southern-style variant also seemed to be missing something. The raw materials are present to make this place something special. More prompt and mindful service, attention to detail, and a clearer flavor and identity for the food are needed to break that barrier though. read more

A friend took me here, and I was from out of town, so I just trusted the recommendation. It's located in an up and coming neighborhood, and it has a cool vibe to it. Since I was in North Carolina, I ordered a more southern option. The collard greens had no flavor. It tasted like grass. The fried flounder was very hard and I could tell that it had been previously frozen. The hush puppies were too doughy. The service was also very disengaged. Frank or Nancy, sharp either way. the restaurant was busy but not full-up when I got in - one group waiting for a table when I left. thrilled that I made the time to get down here and have a look around even though I'm not especially hungry (late breakfast) but it's after noon and I've got a hole in my schedule the size of a fish sandwich and I figure this place ought to fill it nicely. found a seat at the counter and took in three pages of menu: looks like eats for everyone but the print is large and the choices current and from where I sat it all looked good going out. icy water and hot coffee of course, and how about a Salmon BLT plus slaw and substitute green beans for the fries because my cardiologist and my lovely bride prefer that I like it that way? got cleaned up and more coffee while waiting and out comes lunch: big soft bun holding crisp lettuce, tomatoe slices, and a slab of brown on the outside pink in the middle salmon all of it kept in place by a smear of spiced mayo and a bit of bacon for traction. (props to the cook for nailing this one hard!) slaw is vinegary and green and comes out with a pickle for a hat, beans are green as the day is long and agreeable to a drizzle of slaw juice if no one is looking ;-) read more

CLT history right here. You may go there for the first time out of curiosity, just to say you've been to one of Charlottes oldest restaurants...yes, since 1945. You will comeback because of the food quality, the friendly service and the value. When you walk in, you can feel the history, it just has that vibe and when you look around you'll see it's folks just like you. It's not snooty or snobby or anything like that. My first time in was about 1981 or so, I was a student at UNCC and a friend lived nearby and we went here after class for dinner. Wow, a lot has changed with this neighborhood. I remember there was a music store right off Pecan and Hiway 74, Brandt's maybe? Can you say gentrified neighborhood? It's a happening area now with lot's of other restaurants around, mixed in with upscale condo's, apartments and homes since it's so close to the Uptown. So many good choices from the menu and I like the Blue Plate Specials. I had the pulled pork platter with broccoli salad, sweet potato fries and yeast role with 1/2 & 1/2, wow what a meal, I had to get a 'go box' and everything was delicious. If you're thirsty you'll find they have a full bar and if you're feeling festive you might like the old time Wurlitzer Juke Box that gets you 3 plays for a buck. Lot's of old favorites and for the Avett Bro's fans, the entire Emotionalism Album, of course I had to play Pretty Girl From Chile. They do have a small parking lot but if it's full, there is nearby walkable street parking. read more

Love this place for the simplicity of the food to take comfort in and enjoy. You will not leave hungry. My favorite menus items are the chili cheese fries and the small block burger with cheese. The fries are large enough to share. It is generous on the chili but could use more cheese. The small block burger is 1/3 lb of beef and all the way is lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and mayo. I skip the onion and mayo, and request cheese, mustard and ketchup. The kitchen is light on the ketchup. If you like lots of ketchup, ask for a side. The bun is served as is at room temperature. I always forget to ask for it to be heated on the grill. The staff is always polite and keep your refills coming too! read more

We stopped in on a Sunday after church for lunch for 4 adults and 2 kiddos. It's a diner with the oldies and some more modern food options. There are certainly enough options to satisfy almost everyone. The kids both got a corn dog and shared a basket of fries. Those were all what you'd expect. Two others in our party got burgers. They both said it was what you'd expect at a diner-a nicely crisp cooked flat grill burger, with a good variety of toppings available. My wife got the Salmon BLT- it was the best selection at our table. It was a nice sized piece of salmon that was cooked nicely, with dark greens and other topping ps on a open faced sandwich. I got the Po'Greek Boy-which was a good combination of flavors. The only thing that threw me off a bit was the ice cold lettuce and tomato on the warm sandwich. I do get the toppings need to stay fresh and crisp (which they were) but the hot/cold blend was a bit stark. Our server was great and really engaged with the kids, which was fun. Almost immediatly following the pickles the server told us there was no more chicken, only two small pieces and he brought the menu so the person in our party could choose something else. So the server allowed a guest to order chicken, many minutes later asked about dark meat and then when the food arrived said there was only two small pieces so he could t serve it????this being said there were 3 tables in the place so almost empty. I would have apologized and served the chicken and sides and comped the dish. Instead, out party member got nothing because by the time the server came reappeared to take his order we were almost done eating. Used to LOVE the diamond. Gives the feel of a classic dinner but the food is better than any 3-4 star restaurant. Everything was seasoned to perfection I didn't have to add salt to anything. The Caesar salad had housemade croutons which was my favorite part of my meal. I took a To-go box of all the fried stuff and ate it the next day and it was still just as tasty. I didn't order the fried pickles but my friend let me try them and they were delicious, not soggy or overly salty like other places. I recommend everyone try this place. It was my first time and ordered my go-to dish Grilled Cheese. Unfortunately, the grilled cheese is very disappointing. However, without me even pointing out, the waitress noticed that I barely touched my grilled cheese and asked me if I liked it and I answered no to be honest and she was very nice to remove that from what we ordered. My hubby ordered a sandwich (I forgot which one) and seemed to taste decent (not over the top good, but at least decent). I really want to support local mom and pop shops whenever possible, and maybe it's just what I ordered... The price is affordable, service is great, and the history of that place is rich.
