I grew up just down the street and was pleasantly surprise to find this little gem minutes away from my house. Visiting from LA i'm happy to see there's this awesome cafe, so close to home. Four years of studying at UCLA as an undergrad has made me a coffee addict..and the coffee here totally hit the spot. Strong, intense flavors and definitely worth the wait. Finally had the chance to make a visit this morning to get the bake goods fresh right when the bakery opened :) FOOD: I ordered the famous cinnamon roll foe $4.25 and OMG. Best cinnamon roll I've ever tried so far. These cinnamon rolls are not you're average white sugar frosting glazed cinnamon rolls. It's way better. It's caramelized sugar that makes the top really crispy and sweet while the insides are nice and fluffy. mmmmm :D It is a bit on the sweeter side (took me awhile to finish this even with my big sweet tooth), so splitting this with one or two other people would be best. My sister got the lemon poppy seed scone $4.25 and it was so warm, flaky and fresh and flavorful. Their portions are pretty big so if you come here with a small group I would suggest all getting some different and splitting everything so you can taste a little bit of every thing. I was super looking forward to my trip here but was sorely disappointed. The shop itself is bustling and charming with the volume of people necessary to tell all passers-by it's a good place to eat - but the food really didn't live up to that. We didn't try the famed breakfast sandwich because I'm more of a sausage breakfast sandwich person, but we did get the lemon bar, cinnamon rolls, and a sourdough loaf. The lemon bar was par for the course - not stunning but a good enough lemon bar. The sourdough loaf was tasty with a chewy texture but not the structure and air holes you'd find in a traditional loaf. The biggest disappointment was the cinnamon roll - it clearly would have been good while fresh, but was cold by the time we bought them at 10am - and they don't reheat them so your options are to eat it cold or take it home and heat it yourself. As such, it was SATURATED with butter, and not in the good way. I also missed the traditional cream cheese icing, which they don't offer. I prefer Arzemendi on 9th and Irving more for better selection and the fact that I am helping an employee owned co-op. Limited selection of pastries and the place is tiny and cramped. Plenty of outdoor seating if weather permits. We tried the biscuit which my son devoured and the cinnamon roll which was overly sweet and lacked cream cheese frosting. I wouldn't recommend the cinnamon roll and that's my favorite pastry or all time. I also love dense chewy bread textures but this was a miss. It was way to sweet and I hated how they crammed the cinnamon bun into a box too small. Why not give me a bigger box and Not squish my roll? Needs more cinnamon and less sugar so it has that cinnamon bun flavor. As it is now it tastes like sweet bread with sugar topping. I would also recommend some sort of not sugary cream cheese frosting to help cut down on the sweetness and add another flavor profile. I live very close and don't understand why the lines are so crazy on the weekends. As it's convenient I really want to like the stuff they make here. I pretty much go weekly with my daughter because when we go for our walks she always wants a cookie. The cookies are of the more crumbly butterey rich dry variety which isn't to my taste (i prefer chewier) (I've tried nearly all of them now). The breakfast sandwiches are good (very rich though). I wish they would be more like Jane the bakery and offer baguettes loaf bread and more breads. This delicious delectable mouth watering want to inhale but also savor every bite breakfast sandwich - is made up of a delicious buttermilk biscuit, bacon, scrambled eggs, Pepper Jack cheese (YES PEPPER JACK!), avocado and toped with the most flavorful lemon garlic aioli. The special breakfast sandwich includes - two eggs scrambled (silky smooth and fluffy), with pepper jack cheese, applewood smoked bacon (nice crunch and protein w/o being overwhelming), avocado, and their self-proclaimed "famous lemon-garlic aioli". The only slightly disappointing factor to the sandwich is the texture of the biscuits. They are much denser and less flaky as I would have expected. The biscuits on the tray off to the side looked much taller and fluffier. Other notable treats include their cinnamon bun, which was crispy on the outer layers and fully covered in cinnamon sugar in each layer of soft dough. Really tasty, but rich, so have a glass of milk close by or split up over a few seatings. The savory beer cheese and green onion scones were quite dry. I'd recommend heating them up in a toaster oven or perhaps requesting that they be heated through to activate some of the oils. Love, love, love their special breakfast sandwich. I've had one of the breakfast bowls but always end up getting the sandwich. The beignets on Sundays are the bomb! Everything takes forever though. I order online now rather than stand in line and then just pick up my food and head out. The line is very long and everything is cooked to order which is awesome but when you're in line for at least 30 minutes and then wait another 30 minutes for the food to come out, it's a lot of time doing nothing. I definitely head across the street and order a cup of coffee at the one cup at a time place and they are awesome. I like their coffee a lot. It is also made to order and they have a ton of different varieties. I'm doing a review on their eggs since I'm on an extreme low carb diet and one of my best friends was feasting on baked goods that day. The three eggs in a bowl is awesome, dare I say life saver.
