Best Lunch Sesame chicken. Have been coming here for years and really enjoy their food and service.

Desert Jade has been my favorite Chinese restaurant in Phoenix for decades. I can always expect, and experience, a great meal here. My only complaint is the lack of change. I'm vegan, and I've been able to sort out how to order my favorite items with my favorite server to make sure they have no animal products in them. Spicy bean curd with water, not broth. It's to the point where I don't have to order - it's just "the usual." That's wonderful, but it won't help any other vegans feel comfortable ordering. It would be great if they updated the menu to indicate what is, or could be made, vegan. For instance, I know the bean curd soup can also be ordered with water instead of broth. It wouldn't change the great food they already serve, but it would open it up to new customers. read more

Stop thinking about this place now. Seriously, turn away, find another place. Ok, fair warning, but don't say I didn't tell you so. We picked up a To-Go order this evening. Pepper Chicken, sweet & sour chicken (sauce on the side) and an order of Dumplings. I will give them credit the dumplings were great and so was the white rice. The S&S chicken was just over fried over breaded chicken if it had chicken in each little nugget. The pepper chicken had little to no flavor, and soggy veggies. I did some how receive an extra order of what I think was teriyaki chicken, thought it was wrong and realized I was charged for it on the receipt. No big deal who doesn't spend $50 for Chinese food? Seriously, I always do. Sadly, it wasn't good either. If it's between this place or Panda, pick Panda. It will taste better, and be cheaper. read more

This is a hidden jem that is not to be missed. We were greeted quickly and with a smile when we walked through the door from a young lady in the bar. Another lady greeted us and took us to our table. A gentleman brought us hot tea and cold water to our table right away, and then we were greeted by our waitress Rose. Good team work going on at this place. I have never been to a nice Chinese place before. This was a really nice one and I was super excited to see how the food would taste. While enjoying my hot tea (BEST TEA EVER! it was PERFECT), I glanced over the menu. The prices are very decent and they have many different dishes to choose from. We started with an order of fried wantons. These were light, airy, slightly crispy, delicate and filled with a little bit of cream cheese. They came with sweet and sour sauce, which was the best sweet and sour sauce I've ever had. Nice bright red orange color, sweet and tangy and not thick or to thin, just right. Very good start to a grand meal that I had no idea was about to come. Rose moved our fried wantons' plate out of the way and put two large plates in front of us. She then started bringing out our food. We had sweet and sour pork, pan fried noodles, fried rice, and sesame chicken. Sesame chicken was at least two large oh so TENDER chicken breasts crisped to perfection in thick dark onion sauce that I soaked my rice and noodles in. Pan fried noodles were lightly oiled and tasted like they were fried in a wok, very tasty. The fried rice was fresh, soft and fluffy. The sweet and sour pork was smothered (NOT soggy) in their yummy sweet and sour sauce. It included large chunks of pineapples, green bell peppers and onions. Every portion was enough for two to three people to share or even save for the next day (see photos), BUT it is going to be so hard from stopping yourself enjoying your hot fresh food in such a romantic dark setting (music overhead was a love song station). We had so much to pack up, Rose came by and put it all up for us in boxes. She was awesome, very sweet, and always came by to check on us to see how we were doing. For everything we got -not- including tip was ONLY $34. Forget the buffets, this is the place to go. Ordered takeout from here this evening. The food was comparable to any other Chinese place I've been however I did have a few issues that will keep me running back in the future. When our order arrived the juice had spilled all over the plastic bag that it was in. And by spilled I mean pooled in the bottom, it was significant. We ordered the cream cheese rangoons and they were terrible - the worst I have ever had. The first one I bit into had zero cream cheese (literally) and the remaining had a smudged of cold cream cheese that looked like it just came out of the container. For dinner we had the Mongolian beef and garlic chicken with mushrooms. Both were delicious. However, I am a huge Rangoon fan and as pathetic as it sounds, I won't be back for that reason. There are way too many great Chinese places in Phoenix to only be enjoying half my meal. read more

Delicious Food, Wonderful Service I recently went to Desert Jade for lunch and was welcomed with a friendly smile when I walked in the restaurant. I was seated almost immediately and greeted by my server with water and a smile. Everything was tasty and plentiful. The Mongolian beef was particularly good. The Mongolian beef is delicately sliced, very lean, flavorful, and melts in your mouth. My fellow "yelpers" this is Mongolian beef perfection. I couldn't find a single flaw, I just couldn't and now my mouth is watering. Desert Jade has very affordable prices and the portions are great. The staff is incredibly nice, friendly, gracious and accommodating and the service is second to none. In addition, Desert Jade offers terrific lunch and dinner specials. We had takeout and was not impressed with the food it was just bland. Would not recommend or return.

We went here for many years and it was among the best in Phoenix. We noticed that the quality has gradually deteriorated over that last several months. The fried rice and broccoli is often undercooked. The snow peas have been replaced by substitutes. Almond chicken is gone leaving only cashew chicken with soft cashews. The owner seems like she doesn't care anymore. Too bad since it was our favorite place to take friends, but sadly no more. read more

I have been coming here for about 15 years, and every time the food is pretty consistent. I don't remember a time when it was not good. Now understandably, this is not "genuine" Chinese food, but rather very decent "americanized" Chinese food. You will find the old take-out standbys here: Mongolian beef, lo mein noodles, hot & sour soup, etc. The decor has remained pretty much the same with its velvet red booths, dim lighting, and large mirrors. I wish the fireplace worked for those cold nights (wait, what cold nights?!? you know what I mean), and that they ran a duster over the windows. You receive free tea with your meal which is always a plus. I can't really comment on too many dishes as I only really get the Mu Shu which is delicious and they prepare it for you at the table. The only bizarre thing I experienced here was when we ordered a large bowl of sweet and sour soup for the whole table but we couldn't finish it all, so we requested a to-go container for it. The waitress said they could not give it to us as a take home for some bizarre confusing reason we couldn't make out. Then she wanted to argue about it even though were were just going to let it go. It was like someone telling you that you can't take home buffet leftovers (which is understandable for obvious reasons), but this was not a free refillable menu item and we had paid for an entire large bowl. So we couldn't figure out what they were going to do with the soup, pour it out? Overall, I'll probably pop in here and there, but I will finish my soup next time! I recommend the hot pot, everyone loves cooking food at their table! The service, except for that one time, is always excellent. read more

Sub par food; everything we ordered was over-cooked, bland, and tasteless. It didn't even look appetizing. We went for a nice family dinner here and were relying on the favorable reviews; however, we were vastly disappointed with what Desert Jade had to offer. It was obvious from the appetizers that something was off. The wonton soup was watery and not seasoned at all. The fried shrimp was almost burnt, and the bbq pork ribs were boiled with no flavor. The tangerine beef was leathery with a thin coating of burnt breading; the Kung pao chicken had pieces of barely recognizable "chicken", and the chicken lettuce wraps were mostly egg and rice noodles. What was most disappointing was the reaction we received when we provided feedback to the restaurant. First we spoke to the server who called my husband a "kid". Then the manager, an elderly woman, was extremely rude and belligerent, stating, "you don't like the food, don't come back." Most assuredly, we will not. If I could, I would give Desert Jade zero stars. Alas, one star is as low as it can go. read more

First time back since Covid so taking that into account I bumped it up from 1 star. Hot tea was Luke warm. Kung pao shrimp was ordered as spicy as they could and was bland. The only ingredient I could taste was soy sauce. The hot and sour soup was warm but not hot. It seemed like we were eating at a retirement center that allowed extra sodium. Went for lunch and ordered the Mongolian Beef lunch special. I had to hunt for the beef amongst the green and white onions. After separating the beef and onions and incorporating the appropriate amount of onion that an onion lover like me would want I ate everything but the pile of onion on the plate. During my meal no one checked on me, and they check on most of the other tables, so I couldn't say anything without getting up from the table. When the lady came to take my plate she commented that there was a lot of onion! I said yes there was and it felt like I was paying for $10 worth of onion. She walked away while laughing about the amount of onion. Someone else brought my check, and I paid. On the way out I saw the lady who served me and I nicely let her know that the amount of onion was seriously too much. She said she already told them in back, and hen told me how much beef cost per pound,"almost $10 per pound!" She continued to laugh in my face and I tried to explain that this doesn't help me in this situation. Again she kept laughing it off when I said I would probably never return. She wished me well and hoped that I'd find a restaurant that I liked. What!?!? Just absolutely terrible. read more

Egg Drop Soup: it was nice and creamy - it was just ok. Vegetable Egg Foo Young: AMAZING! Fluffy, Crispy and the sauce was not too much and it complimented the dish perfectly. Kung Pao Chicken: We ordered it regular & it was bland. It tasted as if the chicken was cooked bland & separately from the sauce so when it was combined it did not have as much flavor as it should have been. The sauce wasn't bad, I was disappointed since this was one of my absolute favorite dishes and it just did not have much flavor. It was a recommendation how we found this place, at least the Egg Foo Young was worth it oh and the hot tea was not bad. read more

This restaurant knows how to do Americanized Chinese food and they know how to do it well! They also have authentic Chinese dishes that are amazing too. Some of my favorites are the Egg Foo Young (which they're well-known for!), Tangerine Beef, and Sizzling Rice Shrimp. Portions are quite generous and you'll definitely get full from a few dishes. The wait staff are also extremely attentive and friendly. Would definitely come again! read more

I think I have been coming to desert Jade since I was at least 20 years old so the place is been there at least 23 years. Service is good. It's dependable Chinese food. Food had excellent flavor, staff was very friendly, and very quick service. Unfortunately that is the only pleasurable part of my take out lunch. Chicken was over cooked, dry and breading had burnt taste to it on some pieces. I couldn't even finish eating all of my meal. I was a little disappointed since all of the reviews on this place seemed to be really good. Maybe it was a one off and not a typical visit, however I do not know if I will return to try again. We ordered a family dinner for 2. It was $29 but in small print which we did not see it was $29 per person. We had dirty dishes to drink and eat from and the food didnt taste that great. Then the cashier was like its not our fault you didnt read it. I said no tip it was already included in the price of the food. Never going back there again and i hope others read this and take my advice not go ho here. There is a lot of other Chinese just down the street with better prices and taste so much better. Only eat here if you have a reservation and are staying to eat in the restaurant. The kitchen is very poorly managed. Takeout orders take well over an hour. The food is good but only because it is being prepared in Phoenix and there is nothing else to choose from. Not really. If you choose to come here. Just know it will be a very long wait. read more

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in town. The service is always fantastic and the servers are so nice! I have been coming here for a few years and always come back because of the consistently amazing food and service. They bring you hot oolong tea to enjoy with your dinner, which is one of my favorite things to drink. Their egg drop and hot & sour soups are both great ways to start off your meal. The dinner combinations are fantastic and we always get at least two entrees to share. Their lemon chicken is amazing and I cannot ever convince myself to get anything else. We've also had their lo Mein, chicken and snow peas, orange chicken, sesame chicken, general tso's chicken and their chicken noodle soup. 100% would recommend this place if you are looking for Chinese food! I live about 45 min from here now and still come all the way just for their amazing food! read more

Food was pretty good! Had the house noodle soup (not on the menu), was good, a bit bland for my taste but it wasn't bad at all. Had shrimp, chicken, and beef. My son also ordered the shrimp and lobster sauce lunch special (he's 9), and he LOVED it. He went on and on that it was the best Chinese he has ever eaten. That's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 3 which I would have given for my food, because I did try the shrimp and lobster sauce....it was very very good!! Bummed. I'm the type that is willing to drive out of my way to have good food. Whether it be simple or sophisticated, most food has the possibility of being prepared well. There was nothing satisfying about he entire meal that we ordered for our family. I'm not sure the "sesame chicken" was actually sesame chicken. I didn't see a single sesame seed. The potstickers were terribly bland. Plain meat in a dumpling, poorly pan fried. The sauce had no flavor. I'm pretty confident there was not an ounce of salt in anything . Beef with vegetables was supposed to be spicy...definitely not. Bland, over cooked possibly microwaved vegetables. The tangerine chicken we got for the kids was the only thing that had any kind of flavor in the sauce, but none of the meat offered was made tempura style. They sliced strips of chicken breast which hardly had any crispy coating. There was no pride to the food here. We are not chain food eaters, but Panda and Pei Wei would have been significantly better choices. read more

Went here last night after deciding to try something new (our usual go-to is China Chili). Big mistake, the food was horrible, I ordered the tangerine chicken and my son the honey walnut shrimp. The portions are smaller, the chicken was overcooked and the food just wasn't good. Upon leaving the owner asked how was everything, I told her bad, she said "oh sorry, guess you'll be looking for another place to eat" lol. Not that I expected anything other more than that, Asians aren't actually known for their customer service to begin with. Save your money, I'm not sure how this place has so many stars..I'm only giving 2 because my waiter was descent, otherwise they'd have a solid one - since zeros aren't allowed here. I've been going here for more than 10 years and the food is always consistency wonderful. For appetizers I love the egg rolls, the pot stickers and the wontons. And please try the Sizzling Rice soup. All of the entries are great. Just try something different each time. The take out food is as consistent as eating in. FYI - they make the most amazing Mia Tia. Yesterday was my first time in to try Desert Jade, and was really looking forward to some Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. It's probably one of my favorite Chinese dishes. I noticed on their menu they list a version with a black bean sauce that didn't sound like the dish I am accustomed to. I asked Yen who I believe is the owner and she said theirs was a different style. I told her I was accustomed to a lighter sauce with carrots and peas. No problem she said, not only did she have it made exactly the way I stated it was the best I've ever had!! I've found my new go-to for Chinese! read more
