There are lots of bars in SLU... but most of them are more like "taverns" and "gastropubs," not upscale places where you can feel fancy meeting a friend (or going on a date). Deep Dive seemed like the perfect antidote to all the mini-golf and pizza-and-beer joints catering to the techbro crowd. You enter through a side door that is easy to miss and doesn't have "Deep Dive" on it -- if you get lost, just ask someone at the Understory (or just keep working your way around the base of the Spheres). We showed up about 10 minutes before the opening time of 4 pm, and were second in line. By the time the doors opened, there were a good 15-20 people waiting in line, which is basically how many the bar will seat. You check in at the desk and head down a VERY dimly lit ramp to the bar. There is a small banquette tucked in the corner behind the desk; it seemed like a waiting area at first, but I saw two parties seated there with drinks. I'd avoid that spot if you can, because you're completely tucked away behind a wall and can't see all the cool stuff in the bar proper. If you're a large group (more than four), there is exactly one spot for you: a semi-set-off room at the back of the bar with couch and chair seating. The cocktail menu comes in a big thick leather binder. You'll find a mix of classics, modern drinks, and their own house specialties. Cocktails are $17 each, and mocktails are $12. A separate section of the menu focuses on spirits and wine, with varying prices, but this seems like a place to focus on craft cocktails. We asked to sit at the bar, so we could gawk at all the bottles and curiosities. Despite the dim lighting, there's a lot to see behind the bar. It's worth doing a lap around the room to see the curiosities in the alcove and in that back room, although it's a little awkward to get in there when people are using it. Service was professional and courteous, but not particularly warm. They seemed to have maybe one less bartender than would be ideal, so the bartender definitely didn't have time to chat about alcohol or drinks. I asked for help choosing between two cocktails, and the bartender's answer basically came down to "pick the one you want." When we asked the bartender for the check, a different server we'd never seen before handled our payment, so it felt a little disjointed. The manager (I presume) walked around asking some tables how they were doing, but not us. So, a very cool-looking and romantic place for a very pricey drink. An interesting bar to visit once, but overall, if I'm going to pay nearly $20 for a cocktail, I'll do it at Canon. read more

The staff were borderline rude and what I consider very unprofessional. We asked them to store a cake for a birthday and its customary for restaurants or bars to just place it in the fridge and just bring it out as is so that the cake cutting can be done at the table. However , when we asked if we could they could bring out the cake they first served us new plates for cake which is normal, but then brought out the cake that was custom made and clearly not meant to be cut before hand, was already diced and sliced and served on plates already(?) even though they gave us plates that were for after WE cut the cake at the table?? Which made us suspicous because why would they cut the cake and serve it unless maybe it was accidentally ruined/crushed whatever and didn't want to own up to it and tried to cover their mistake. And when we asked about it expecting some kind of apology for the upsetting ordeal, they gave a very much "Okay and?? So what" attitude that was off putting and never gave a proper apology. Things I liked: the food, the ambiance, and the service. My group sampled a bunch of stuff including the gougere, beef tartare, gnocchi, smoked salmon, duck confit salad, and the fanciest hot dog I've ever seen. Everything was quite tasty, I personally enjoyed the salad the most, it had a nice mix of nuts and lentils that worked well with the duck. I sampled a cocktail (mix tape I think?) that my friend got and it was delicious. The gnocchi were ricotta based and quite light and delicious. And the roe on the hot dog worked surprisingly well. The bartenders and wait staff were friendly and attentive. Things I liked less: the price, portion sizes, and the wait. We were dissuaded from ordering the meatball because it was 1 meatball literally, for $10 I believe. The salad and hot dog felt well portioned, but everything else was tiny, though high quality as previously mentioned. My group of 4 ended up spending about $25/person. Also it's quite a small place, so the wait was like 1.5 hours. I appreciate the novelty of it being in the spheres, but that's a tough sell for any place. Maybe I'd return for a special occasion with out of towners, but finding it hard to treat this as anything other than a pleasant one off experience. read more

What is up with the haters on here? Deep Dive is super classy inside with great service and top notch cocktails. They open at 4pm and the line starts queuing around 345 so if you want to make sure to get a seat definitely start lining up early. The metal-based Trust Us was delicious. The Smoked Oyster Onion duo was crazy good. The smokey ocean taste balanced the onion flavors in the dip really well. Brought out the best flavors of the ingredients. The profiteroles were ok. Wished there were more uni filling. It was REALLY GOOD. Difficult to find for visitors b/c the only sign that they had was basically almost transparent on a tiny door that was off road. It took us 2 different visits to finally find it. Also, difficult to navigate to because we gotta listen to their 2-minute long disclaimer on phone before we got routed to the host. We planned to only grab a drink stay for 10-15m before heading to our scheduled event nearby but the host refused to give out estimated wait time on the phone beforehand so we could plan our night because they say it changed every minute. So then we waited in the hall way. 5m after, the host came out again and said sorry they couldn't have customers waiting in the hallway but didn't bother to tell us that along with their other 98737 disclaimers LOL 10 people before us just did though!? She didn't check on us anymore till we asked for the check. She dropped off the check and left and never came back. My husband had to go to the bar to pay the check!!! I left a note on the receipt "maybe better service next time". I normally don't do that but honestly at that point I was so disappointed with the service that I thought some feedback might help. Well we left and the manager called me. Not to ask about what went wrong but to scold me!!!! He didn't even want to hear what went wrong! Deep Dive is my favorite place. Not just my favorite bar or favorite Seattle destination. Deep Dive is the very, very best. A teeny-tiny bar underneath the bowels of the Amazon Spheres, Deep Dive is like the most well-curated oddities shop where you can find an impeccably-crafted cocktail. it's intimate, sophisticated, sexy, and just so fucking cool. Just come and visit and I guarantee that before you're even gone you'll be mentally preparing for your next visit. The interior is just epic. Every direction you turn you'll find something interesting to take it. It's very "masculine", sort of what I imagine the club room of an eccentric 1850s bachelor millionaire might look like. At least on the night I visited, this was balanced out by one hell of a disco playlist. I mean... this place had to be made just for me. The cocktail list is long, with multiple pages of classics, new classics, and Deep Dive originals. I ordered from the originals and gather that it changes frequently so I won't even go into what I ordered, but just know that you'll surely find something you love. They also have a huge spirits list and plenty of wine. All of this is bound together in a leather menu that just adds to the class factor. It's not cheap. Drinks were $17 before tax and then they add a 20% grat. But what I like is that they were VERY clear about the added gratuity, which is not always my experience. Do what you can to get a reservation. And this is a place for 2 or 4 people, tops. You won't want to even attempt to come here with a group, and once you're in you are expected to stay in your seat. Just know what you're signing up for, and I promise that you'll have a fantastic time. OH, and one last thing. Try and sit at the actual bar. They have an amazing ability to ignore people sitting at their tables waiting to order drinks. We waited in line for 48 mins to then wait another 20 mins prior to getting our orders in. I would not recommend the bar unless you have time to kill and secondarily have the neeto pay for underwhelming overpriced drinks. I arrived shortly after they opened and there was already a good amount of people inside. Once over the summer, once in October, once now in January. All three times the bar has closed early. This place has cool vibes. It's in speakeasy so it feels a little exclusive, they make it hard to find. The atmosphere here is cool. They've got cool music, beautiful art, and chill vibes. I really wanted to love this place. It seemed hard not to. Unfortunately The one thing I did order was terrible though. I feel like I can't make a judgment solely off of the one item so I will have to go back. However I strongly recommend not to order the chocolate tart. It was deconstructed - chocolate pudding and whipped cream. The pudding was so salty I could not even finish it. I thought perhaps maybe the first bite I had got a little extra salt in the bite, however it was so strong throughout every bite, so much so I did not enjoy it at all. I drank more water than I ate. The prices seemed a little high as well. I understand likely it is because of the exclusivity and vibes but for Seattle seemed strange. No wonder I passed a few Microsoft executives eating there. Like with most of my reviews, I'm going to start with what I DIDN'T like about DEEP DIVE. DEEP DIVE located at 620 Lenora Street near the Denny Triangle in Downtown Seattle is fairly new. The very location speaks to its definition of a "Speakeasy" as it is tucked away underneath the Amazon Dome. It's door could be easily missed as it is not entirely visible from the street. Once inside, if you pay attention, you will be blown away by the attention to detail that went into the limited space. Here's where I give a 50/50 strike against DEEP Dive. Right on the site it says "Dress Smartly". To me, that means you put a little effort into your outfit. You press your shirt, you shine your shoe's. Not come in wearing a fuckin Hoodia or looking like you just tagged a building and skate boarded there. Not a suit but dressy casual. If it were me and you showed up looking like garbage, you wouldn't get in. I'm just saying. The space is small. About a dozen tables plus the bar, plus a private area which is where my second strike comes in. I know that everything is made in house daily but FUCK were you killing the animals in back as you made the dishes? It seemed to take a little longer to get orders than I thought it should. Maybe I ain't the most patient muthufucka on the planet, eh? I enjoyed the sardines, curried tomatoes with sourdough crackers while my date had the smoked halibut dip with potato chips. The chips were made in house and the dip had perfectly sized pieces of halibut. One other thing that repeatedly took me out of the moment was the music. I would've expected a speakeasy to do more neo-soul (Rapheal Saadiq, Leon Bridges) but it was all hip-hop shit and I know I'm old but, you can only hear bitch so many times in an evening. I will give MAD props to their mixologist. They knew how to put together some cocktails which is the real draw of this place. Despite my complaints, I truly did enjoy this place and not only can I recommend it but I will be going back myself. read more

It makes me feel like Seattle is almost an actual city now, and not just some town of cranky, strung-out bumpkins who are content with mediocre crap and freeze out anything new and different that comes along. It's cool that it is in The Spheres, and when you walk in you are immediately overcome by its dark and captivating ambiance. The space is pretty small, so you can feel a little cramped sitting at a table or at the bar, but whatever. I wouldn't recommend coming here with a large group. I think it is the perfect place for when you are with one other person and you're trying to be all intimate or tell each other your darkest secrets. Of the drinks that I've tried, they're been pretty citrus-forward. That's not a bad thing - they're delicious and balanced. And they are IG presentation-worthy. I've tried a few of their food options, and overall I've been satisfied. The reason that I will keep coming back is because of the hot dog. I didn't know the Seattle hot dog was actually a thing. This bar is tucked in the understory of the amazon spheres structures. It is particularly hidden but very well designed with a great interior. I have been there twice, one time sat at the bar and the second time in a separate little space near the end of the hallway (this one was less nosy and we got the same amount of good service). Try their drinks: Their old fashioned was pretty good and their Sazarac was slightly better. The melon ball is great for someone who likes something sweeter (but not too sweet). The best thing about this place is the ambiance and the lighting design. You could tell it was designed from a really good architecture firm. One word of advice is to call ahead and make sure to make reservations, as it can get busy during Fridays and Saturday evenings (it was still extremely packed on Friday at 4pm). read more
