They only open reservations six days in advance, and this place fills up faster than brunch spots when the sun comes out in Seattle. Totally worth the planning. The experience starts downstairs at Tavern Law restaurant, where you let the host know you're headed to Needle and Thread. From there, you're directed to a mysterious locked door next to a telephone. Yes, an actual phone. Pick it up, give your reservation name once someone answers, and bam! You're buzzed upstairs like you've just passed a very classy secret test. Once inside, you're greeted and escorted to your seat, and the magic really begins. There's no drink menu because why limit creativity? Instead, the staff plays cocktail therapist, asking about your favorite spirits, flavors, and moods. Based on your answers, they craft a completely custom drink tailored to your palate. Every cocktail we tried was spot-on. Balanced, intentional, and clearly made by people who treat mixology like an art form rather than a guessing game. Bonus points: You can request the coaster they took your order on, which lists the ingredients so you can attempt to recreate it at home (results may vary depending on your confidence and liquor cabinet.) Not to be overshadowed by the drinks, the Sockeye Salmon Crostini was a fantastic fresh, flavorful appetizer and the perfect companion to a night of bespoke cocktails. Unlike other speakeasies that feel truly hidden, you actually just walk into Tavern Law, check in with the hostess, and let them know you have a reservation. They then guide you to a telephone where you repeat your reservation name before being let upstairs. It's a fun concept, but not especially secretive, and they're pretty strict about not letting you up early unless it's very empty. Once seated, we actually waited almost 20 minutes before being served with no acknowledgement. We ended up having to flag down the manager just to bring attention to our table, which was disappointing given the experience they're aiming for. The waitress asks a series of questions about your preferences--likes, dislikes, and flavor inspirations--so the bartenders can create custom cocktails for you. If you're knowledgeable about alcohol, this is probably a dream. If you're not (like me), it can feel a little intimidating, but our waitress was patient and did her best to guide us through it. The drinks themselves were excellent. Even the shots were customized, which was a nice touch. The vibe upstairs is chill and relatively quiet, making it a great place to relax and talk. Food is the same menu as downstairs at Tavern Law, so nothing new there. The only downside--and unfortunately a noticeable one--was an interaction with the female bartender (not our waitress). Based on the questions we were asked, my friend gave a mix of savory and sweet preferences, since we were told these were just inspirations. You can't make reservations at their parent main bar, Tavern Law but you can and must make one for their upstairs speakeasy Needle and thread (spots open 6 days prior). It's an intimate dim lit upstairs area with bar, high tops, and lounge seats. There are stairs to the entrance and within the bar area and there are restrooms too. The bar staff take time to understand what you want and ask questions to get more clarity. They encourage you to provide more details about the mood (eg. Very chill spot but also if you're hungry you can get a bite which does have a menu. I have a love hate relationship for bespoke cocktail bars because more than half the time, it is a miss. However, it is all love here - all 3 cocktails my friend and I got were big hits, and reminiscent to the bespoke cocktails I had when I went to Bar Benfiddich in Tokyo. This is not quite at that level yet, but it is excellent enough and I am fortunate to live about a mile from here, so it is as good as it gets. The only challenge is reservations, but I was able to score a same day 1 hour reservation at 6:45pm, granted it was on a Wednesday. Otherwise, you will have to book like exactly 6 days in advance if you aim for weekend prime times. The bar was empty when I went so I nicely asked the bartender if my friend nearby can walk in, and he was able to accommodate him too without being rushed to leave, despite spending close to 2 hours. This bar is located inside Tavern Law. You go up to the telephone booth to say your name and then the door will be unlocked. Open the door, go up the stairs, and you just entered the speakeasy! Bespoke cocktails mean you tell the bartender your preferences, and they will make the drink for you. This is the only bespoke bar I have been where the bartender patiently explained most of the ingredients and liquor used while making the drink and sometimes even goes into detail why he chose which ingredient. First cocktail - smoky and fruity, something with egg whites, make it pretty, add something with fire. So the bartender made something with scotch, gin, and black currant, with a lime on fire on top. The drink profile is exactly what I stated and wanted, and it is indeed very pretty. It is also fairly strong. Second cocktail - herbal and flowery, more citrus, with absinthe and shochu base. I have gained an increased interest in absinthe cocktails ever since I went to a few absintheries in Prague. The shochu chosen carried forward the herbal notes, while there is mint garnish and more citrus forward afternotes from Etrog, hops flower, and orange blossom water. Third cocktail - aperol and elderflower. This one was beautifully crafted like a royal cocktail - the color coming from the combination of aperol and elderflower. This drink is prepared as a spritz, garnished with some grapes. Overall, I am blown away by all the drinks we ordered. At $21 per drink before tax/tip, this is as good as it gets value wise. It is a bit higher than cocktails nearby (usually $15-20), but the quality and uniqueness more than makes up for it. read more

Carrie Lynn was honestly such a joy. We all loved her energy and she made the whole experience super straight forward especially since we had 2 first timers. She was super kind and bubbly, checked in with us multiple times, and made us feel truly at home. She's amazing. There's no drink menu, so you tell your server what you like and don't like. Based on notes, we received our cocktails from the bartender - a gin based refreshing but tangy drink that had blackberry liqueur with demerara syrup that was little bit molasses which gave it a dark and rich flavor for the sweetness and and another drink with chateau as a base spirit. It had cloosterbitter for a herbal liqueur that gave a green color and Crème de violette for aromatics with some agave touch. This cocktail had a savory, earthy flavor. Really cool atmosphere and I love their "schtick" of making custom drinks (no cocktail/drink menu). Make sure to let them know if you have any allergies though! I told them I loved creamy tropical drinks and nutty flavors (think almond liquor or bitters) and they came up with a super creamy, nutty, pineapple drink with coconut cream for me that was super cute! Reminded me of a fancy pina colada. My partner asked for a strong creative drink and his was also super yummy and very strong.
