sooo my experience at tavern law was just alright. the food was good! 5/5 for steak and the fact that they could sub potatoes for fries. originally came here in general for steak frites but seems they changed the menu. the needle and bar experience was also fun and we had a great bartender! he made our drink so cool and fun 5/5 however, in regards to food timing, it took over an hour for the steak to come out and when it did it was cold. they also brought out the wrong dish (we ordered burrata but they brought mac and cheese and even this took over 45 min to come out. we were disappointed. also asked for ketchup and she said okay but didn't bring it out. seems she forgot! overall, would not necessarily go again but was fun for one time! read more

We were there to try out their new menu inspired by Saturday morning cartoons and honestly, it was fantastic! But you can make one at their sister upstairs speakeasy then head downstairs for a night cap. I believe they have a seasonally evolving menu. They were on their *sins* format when we went so all their drinks were based on sins. Stopped by for the speakeasy and stayed for the popcorn chicken. I've never tried popcorn chicken quite like this. The batter melted in your mouth and the chicken tasted so fresh. I showed up early for reservation in the, so I was hoping to stop by the little thread for drinks. I ended up not making reservations and they were committed for the night. I didn't mind hanging out at Tavern though. I scanned the menu, and all of tears seem the most appetizing. The bartender asked what I thought and honestly I just said I don't know what's happening in the strength but I really really love it. It's sweet and savory, zesty, smoky. It was such a complex drink. I just wanted to keep drinking it. My friend and I had two rounds, went to dinner, and it came back for two more rounds until they closed. It was mid week after the holiday so it was actually really quiet in there, but kind of perfect. It's a very intimate, spiky vibe, classic has the best old-school rap playlist in the background. Heard about this place from a few friends and had to come! It's a small restaurant/bar but they have a secret speakeasy! You have to make a reservation and only allotted an hour. One you walk into the restaurant you go to a secret door and you call up and someone escorts you up! Once up stairs we were seated immediately and a server comes up and ask drink preference and they ask from scratch. Do you like fruity, what type of liquor, not to sweet etc. for mine I picked not to sweet, vodka, blueberry and citrus it came out close to a martini. The other drinker prefers sweeter and they were both amazing. My second drink I chose bourbon and it came out as a Smokey Bourbon drink with honey and lemon! It was delicious! Stellar service from staff and unique drinks! I love that they explore with unique pairings and clarified/infused liquors. Their menu changes regularly so make sure to come back every once in a while to never miss some of the coolest drinks. Long story short, my wife got ill in the evening and I went on a search for a pharmacy instead of drinking as we had planned. I was called twenty minutes after the initial start time and explained the situation to the caller. At no point was I expecting to receive my deposit back as it's made super clear that you forfeit it at time of purchase. The person on the phone was upset that I inconvenienced them this evening and straight talked down to me. I'm an adult, adult things happen, I didn't call the place as result and I never expected a refund for my tickets. I don't need to be spoken down to by your staff while I'm under stress. Honestly kind of underwhelming. This was at the top of my list of spots to hit on my trip to Seattle and the first cocktail bar I went to here. It's a cool experience entering but honestly felt like they could have done more with the space to create more of a vibe. It's very small which is nice cause it makes it feel more intimate. There was a bit of a pretentious air with the bartender which some would say you expect with a curated cocktail bar but I disagree in that you can offer a high level of service and be great at your craft while still being very friendly and creating a welcoming environment. The bartender wasn't by any means rude or bad, I've just been to other speakeasies and high end bars that the team makes it feel more welcoming and executing elevated service while also being a bit warmer. The experience was fine the bartender did a good job with asking and explain the standard questions so figure out a drink I wanted. This bar is definitely spirit craft focused and not presentation or garnish focused with very minimal creativity aesthetically wise other than unique vessels for the drinks to go in. I had the steak which wasn't bad, the marinade was good and the steak cooked well and very tender but it was very cold like they let it rest or sit too long before bringing. This review is strictly based on service of the bartender. The male host was friendly. We came in on a rainy Saturday around 7:30 and the bar was pretty much dead, with plenty of seats everywhere. We asked the host if we could see how long the wait was for the upstairs bar and he told us to take a seat at the bar and tell the bartender that we wanted to be put on the waitlist for the upstairs bar. This was fair. The bartender didn't acknowledge us and then when I asked him if we could be placed on the waitlist for the upstairs bar, he was very rude and said that I had already made it clear I wanted to be on a waitlist. I told him I had been informed by the host and the host told me to tell the bartender and that is what I was doing. The bartender went on to rudely say that he doesn't know the wait and that they don't give wait times so that people "won't just sit at the bar for free." We had no intentions of sitting at a bar and not ordering anything, his rudeness was too much and so we went to Canon up the street which had a much better vibe and friendly bartenders. read more

Tavern Law is still really good after all these years. It was there are the beginning of the gastropub craze and still maintains all of the subculture of that era, even it's secret little bar upstairs. Vibe is still great, drinks are still great, food is still usually very good and sometimes you can actually get a seat in here. The specific part of Seattle lineage at Tavern Law that has to be noted is that the burger they serve here is allegedly the same as the one they used to serve at long defunct Spur. The Spur burger was hands down one of the most unassuming but delicious things I've ever had in my life and easily rivaled other artisan burger greats like the one at Father's Office in L.A. Personally I don't think the recipe is quite the same here but it's close and you definitely will not be disappointed if you have one. read more

That didn't stop us, however, and we headed insides. It is dark, but warm and cozy inside. There's a beautiful curved bar and a wall of books (law books, maybe? Get it..), as well as a few tables. There was a large tufted booth in the back for a larger group. Plenty of seating at and around the bar for smaller groups. Yes, this place is small, but once you're in there it feels larger. The drinks were indeed three dollar signs, and they were quite good. I got The Lusty Lady and was very happy to sip on that. The rest of the group all got drinks with different flavor profiles, so it was fun to try them all. Unsure what the total actually came to, but they ranged from $16-$30 or so for one cocktail. We came on a weeknight and there was a short wait to get in as the bar was packed, which was good to see. Overall, the bar is great and they seem to have a great selection of whisky - their cocktail menu is unique and, perhaps based on what we ordered, was a bit too eccentric for us. The Cozy was nice for a cold night and quite sweet. The Funky Folly was recommended by our waiter, but a bit too funky and didn't drink well, but perhaps is an acquired taste.
