Attached Needle & Thread has some disappointingly unpalatable custom cocktails for a supposed speakeasy. The bartenders spent a lot of time creating said cocktails, but the sickeningly syrupy tepid drinks served in tiki mugs and little flower vases seemed to betray a lack of training in classic cocktails, if not common sense. The food is decent and the same menu is served in both the main restaurant and the speakeasy. So you're really better off avoiding the hype and fuss of making a reservation at a tacky "secret" second bar. read more

My friend didn't like hers very much, but our bartender was extremely accepting and altered her drink, leading her to be exceptionally pleased. The service was great. They have tasty bar food. OMG!!!! I don't have the words to express the time that was had at this GREAT establishment. It started from the time that we walked through the door. Tes was an amazing server who went above and beyond. We stood "THE TEST OF TIME" where we were introduced to Gavin and Rachel. We tried several food items froms the menu. The popcorn chicken was well seasoned and the Mac and cheese was surprisingly tasty. Our drinks were custom made :) Gavin is the mixologist experience that you don't want to miss. We were visiting this lovely city known as Seattle and can gladly say this was one of the highlights of our visit. Definitely suggest you check it out!!! read more

Happy hour here is a must! It runs until 7pm most nights and is available all day Sunday. There isn't a ton of seating but I've never had an issue finding a table, especially on Sundays. Oysters are always fresh and shucked nicely (decent deal at $1.50/each) and everything else on the menu is tasty. My random favorite is the cheese & corn cracklings! It looks bland when it first arrives at your table but the serrano pepper/cheese dip is so cheesy, with a hint of spice. They also have drinks on HH and wanting to spend on more of my $ on food, I'm cheap and get the Miller High Lifes for $2. :) Service is also really friendly and food comes out quickly. I would give this place 5 stars if it wasn't for the service issues we had. We were sat down and greeted by our waiter. He said we would give us some time to review the menu while our the rest of our party arrived. They came and then he gave us more menus but we did not see him again until we had to waive him over after about half an hour. We put in our drink and food order which took almost an hour to arrive at our table. He told us we put in our orders right when the rush did as well and that the drinks and food would be out at the same time. In my normal experiences, drinks come out before the food but here, they come out at the same time? Okay, I guess that is just different and maybe all the other tables around us ordered their drinks and food at different times. To repeat, we ended up sitting at our table with just water for almost an hour and a half. It was cool to watch people call on the telephone to be let up to the other part of the establishment but every single time that door shut, it slammed. Lucky us, we were sitting right across from it. (sarcasm) They should probably look into getting something to slow down the force of the door closing. At the end when we were getting our food, service drastically improved. There were now multiple waiters and waitresses checking on us. I liked the drinks and the food was good as well. I do want to go back. I just hope that we do not end up waiting forever again to order and then again to receive food or drink. When we were done and the checks had come, before we had signed them, a delivery of 4 shooters arrived at the table. They told us this was complimentary and a thanks for being so patient with them. So first off the vibe is straight up "we know what we're doing" and they aren't wrong. It feels like a library in which it is expected one smells the books. The size is only a mouth full and you supposed to eat them one bite, but it's worth it. The Sockeye Salmon is like butter that melts in your mouth. This speakeasy bar lives up to its claim of serving craft cocktails. It was no surprise the wait time for a table for 4 people was over an hour. We were not in a rush and the wait gave us a chance to peruse through the menu. Our server consistently checked in and made sure to take our drink orders while we waited. Due to the limited availability of larger tables, parties of 1 or 2 tend to be seated faster. We had considered going up to Needle and Thread, which is directly above Tavern Law. There was a long line of existing reservations and the staff highly recommend calling for reservations a week in advance. Seating was comfortable and cozy. The ambience made an ideal setting for conversation while drinking cocktails. I ordered the Estolo Loco to begin. The drink was fragrant and strong. I also ordered the Forest Walker, which had a nice smell of pine and citrus. I rounded off with a Sidecar cocktail to end the night. We ordered the popcorn chicken to share. Those are absolutely addictive especially with dipping sauces. I wish Tavern Law had a bigger seating area. We'll just have to plan ahead and call in for reservations. read more

My friend Jon took us to this amazing spot! It's a prohibition themed place- the top is a completely normal restaurant until you reach a huge vault door. You'd think it's just decor unless you know better ;) Jon picked up the old fashioned dial phone and told them we had a reservation. The vault door unlocked and we walked up some wooden stairs to a secret back area with old styled decor.. super neat. Complimentary champagne (or was it wine...) and there's no drink menu so you just tell the bartender what type of alcohol/flavors/tones you like in your drink and they make it up. they never make the same drink twice! loved the vibes. also the mac n cheese is killlerrrrr i love it. didn't bother to share hahaha read more

A really good place for a drink during happy hour (everyday 5-7pm and all day Sunday). We sat at the bar and watched our bartender go to work for our drinks. I ordered the Harvest Moon and the Manhattan. Both were $7 during happy hour which is a really good deal! I also ordered the oysters for $1.50 each. They were a bit small and I wasn't a big fan of them. I also had a stomachache later that night because of them so they didn't exactly leave the best impression on me. My GF and I stopped here for a drink after dinner on a Sunday. To be honest, we didn't expect many people and there wasn't many when we got there but after a little bit this large rowdy and loud group came in and destroyed nice atmosphere. Also, I don't think they were expecting many people as there was only 1 waitress and the bartender for the entire place. We were told it was happy hour all night so we took advantage even though we just had dinner. We got a half dozen oysters for $1.50 each and 2 drinks. Unfortunately, the beer that I originally wanted was out so I had to settle with some canned beer. My GF ordered a sweet and fruity cocktail which she enjoyed. The oysters were mehhhh. With high priced cocktails and limited seating, it tends to trend that way. While to cocktails are expensive (~$18) for each one, they are unique and made with care. Great for a date night out or meeting up with some old friends so you want to chat. Tables and areas are spread out enough that you can talk comfortably. Where could I start. I used to come here in 2015 or so while I attended Seattle U, but I do not remember drinks being beyond excellent. Sure, I love the speakeasy, but I would rather stay in upstairs where the bartender Michael make the magic happen. So I had no sleep a night before, all day meeting, just landed back in Seattle from Salt Lake, I needed me time with an amazing drink. I remember liking the ambiance of tavern law where I enjoy drinking alone. Anyhow, the staff are all friendly first of all, and the Manhattan drink I ordered was amazing. It is served in the small what it is supposed to be served in and not the typical bar martini glass. I will pay 25 dollars for this drink anytime if I can have this quality of taste. It blew my mind.. it reminded me of this bar in Shinagaw, Tokyo and better than NYC Manhattan. I also love barrel aged Manhattan, but his mixologist talent goes beyond the barrel aged. MICHAEL is genius, laid back and cool guy to just talk about drinks. All around wonderful friendly staff is going to make you want to become a regular. Tavern Law takes Sunday Funday seriously. Basically, this means $7 cocktails during happy hour. And by happy hour, they really mean, ALL night. $7 classic cocktails like a Manhattan, Vesper, Boulvardier, Ramos Gin Fizz. OMG. Honey, we're nailing our butts to the chair and never leaving! ;-) That's not all. You'd think they'd pour these drinks carelessly and with cheap alcohol? No siree. Words like tinctures, small batch liquors, hand crafted cocktails are second nature to staff and owners at Tavern Law. A business practice that a cocktail fanatic like me HIGHLY appreciates. The food is really good. The burger reminded me so much of SF's Nopa's version and we all know how highly I speak of Nopa. The red wine braised beef cheeks were fork tender and so comforting on a cold winter's night. The mac n cheese with the duck fat crumbs were amazing, sans the sliced green apples on top. I do have to say that the Foie Gras terrine was too chilled for my liking, so that sat on the table for awhile before I finished it. Went to Tavern Law last Friday around 11:00PM and had to wait about 20 minutes since we didn't have a reservation (and didn't know to make one). If you are going to go on the weekends, make sure you have one, and don't be late or you won't get in! We waited and were able to get a table. The place is small and intimate. I had the Pork n' Peaches cocktail and it was SO GOOD! It smelled really smoky but didn't taste as smoky as it smelled. I was eyeballing the mac and cheese and a few of the other late night options on the menu, but we only stayed for one drink. The hostess was really friendly, as were the rest of the staff. I would go here again and make a reservation to be able to get into the speakeasy upstairs. Next time- reservation, and I'm coming hungry so I can try the food menu! read more

As much as I appreciate swanky, gorgeous atmosphere and innovative craft cocktails, I very much balk at charging $4 for a soda water. Holy $hit, Tavern Law, is 10-20 per drink not enough for you? Do you just hate DDs? WTF. I had the Southern Belle, which was great in terms of flavor, but poor in terms of alcohol content. Maybe I'm getting to be too much of a lush, since I seem to say that a lot. I also ended up finishing my friends' drink. I've forgotten the name, but it consisted of whiskey and a very, very strong medicinal taste from the chamomile infused alcohol. Not the best thing I've ever tasted, but much more worth the price tag-- this one will knock you on your @$$. We also ordered a gin based cocktail. If I had to put a name to it, I'd say it was a corpse reviver, but not positive. My friend liked it very much. It's so freaking adorable upstairs - perfect for a post-dinner first date that's going really well, or to chat with close friends. I love the pictures on the wall (slightly dirty girls in black-and-white), the eclectic music, and how you feel like you're alone with your small group in someone's living room. Someone who spends a LOT of $$ on vintage furniture. Not such a fan of downstairs - they should make it look at least half as special as it does upstairs. Do yourself a favor and don't order the run-of-the-mill gin and tonic; tell the bartender what flavors you like (sweet? spicy? vanilla? rum?) and let him make you something unique and new. To some, the Tavern Law is just a quick stop before visiting the exclusive Needle and Thread. However it stands well on its own as a really great bar. It is a really comfortable bar. It is nice and dark and the seating is really comfortable. Service was outstanding--we received water quickly and our orders were taken. They have an outstanding cocktail menu. It was a warm day in Seattle, so I started with a sangria. It was perfect. It was made with red wine (which I prefer) and some nice cognac and really hit the spot. The next drink I had was called the Fish House Punch. This included cognac (again), run, and an apricot liqueur. It was original and outstanding. I did not get food, but saw what others ordered and it looked and smelled really good I am definitely going to return to eat and try more of the cocktails. read more

When we got there it took us a while to figure it out, but we finally realized that people kept talking into this old fashioned phone & that this was the link to get you upstairs. I asked if they had room for two, and they told us to come on up. It was super swanky upstairs, everyone was incredibly nice to us, and it was not nearly as hectic and loud as downstairs. We got a great seat overlooking the downstairs area, but other people had some cute cushy seats that were like couches that were nice too. The lavender drink is incredible! read more

I was in the mood of a more relaxed atmosphere more suited for casual conversation over some good cocktails with some friends so we checked out Tavern Law. Originally we wanted to hit up the speakeasy upstairs (needle & thread) but it was full and we didnt have any reservations so we settled here. This is definitely a bougie upscale spot as the host at the door had a 3 piece suit on and the interior was very nicely decorated. We got a seat at the bar immediately at 12am on saturday. The place wasnt crowded but it wasnt empty as well. After seeing the drink prices ($14-16) I wanted to make sure I had a solid pick, but after seeing one menu item (Smoke on the water), i knew immediately I wanted that and nothing else. It had everything I love in a cocktail (tequila, citrus, egg white, spiciness, smokey flavor). Hands down this was THE BEST COCKTAIL I'VE EVER HAD. I will be returning without a doubt and getting the same exact thing. The presentation & serving was wonderful. The bartender set wood chips on fire, put it out and smoked the drink. My friend and I were not sure what to drink to order and we weren't too sold on what was recommended on the menu so we asked the waitress if it was possible for the bartender to make us something else, and they totally did. The waitress asked us what we liked in a drink as far as alcohol and taste and all the good things, and the bartender was then able to whip us a very tasty drink based on our preference.
