Amberkoek
Philip P.

So there's this Dutch pannekoek chain that seems to be all over Vancouver and so had to try it. Apparently pannekoek is like a thicker crepe like pancake brunch type of meal and it is eaten like a crepe. It's pretty good and the restaurant has savory and sweet options. I do like my savory over sweets, so I ended up getting the Amberkoek which had Dutch cheese, tomatoes, ham, hollandaise sauce with egg in whatever style you like. I went with medium poached eggs. This thing gave me an eggs Benedict vibe since it came with hollandaise sauce. Thought it was a bit strange to put the poached egg in a small bowl on top of the Pannekoek, but whatever. It works still. Also the hollandaise sauce came in a side dish. I guess I was suppose to dip the pannekoek into it, but I ended up pouring it over the egg and pannekoek. This was good, but didn't feel too special. It just felt like a new brunch item with the standard brunch ingredients. So feels a bit underwhelming and no frills really. Just a decent brunch meal that is Dutch influenced I guess. The place gave a very iHop and Denny's kind of vibe. I love the t-shirts the staff seems to wear. They all had different messages on them that were funny in their own ways. I enjoyed that a lot. The staff was quite kind and serviced us pretty well with refilling our drinks. I got coffee which wasn't a very strong and I ended up getting free refills to get my day going. Needed it pretty bad. I appreciate this restaurant chain and wouldn't mind seeing this in the States. I'd eat here every now and then like I do with the other breakfast chains.

Stopped in for quick breakfast. Had eggs Benedict. Good breakfast not anything to either rave or complain about.

Terrible food. $50 breakfast for two. Just lousy all around food and service. Will never go back.

We tried this place once a long time ago when they first opened. That was maybe 7 years ago? I…read morethink back then we weren't too impressed with them. We had waited quite awhile to get a table and then the portions were puny. Also, I think one of us at the table had found a fruit fly or something like that in some of the food or drink. It was a probably a bad idea to go when it was a newly opened business. Fast forward to now...we had a much different experience this time and were extremely happy customers this time. We ordered the following: Egg Benedict Souffle Pancake with Oyama Sausages Egg Benedicat Souffle Pancake with Avocado Okonomiyaki Souffle Pancake Tiramisu Souffle Pancake Rose & Lychee Soda Hojicha Oat Latte Earl Grey Tea Americano Orange Juice OK...could have been happier but that part was our own fault. Didn't realize they took reservations so we walked in without any reservation on a Saturday morning, had to put our name down on a waitlist and waited what felt like an eternity to get our table. We will go in with a reservation next time. The food was sooo good though. Very quickly forgot about the unpleasantly long wait for our table once we dug into our food. The pancakes were soooo fluffy and jiggly! Especially the Tiramisu souffle pancakes. They were stacked so high and had so much jiggle action. No need to travel all the way to Japan for jiggly souffle pancakes. The ones we have here at Fufu Cafe in Vancouver are plenty jiggly and everything tasted awesome as well. In fact, we've travelled to Japan twice and both times failed to get jiggly souffle pancakes. We had some awesome pancakes in Japan, but never did manage to get any jiggly pancakes. Highly recommend this place but do make sure to make a reservation before going in, or else you'll be waiting a long time to get a table.

The chocolate banana hot chocolate was really good and they generally have delicious coffee and tea drinks and great food. It's on my husband's list of places to bring out-of-towners/visitors, so bonus points for that.

I chose the one called "Healthy Start" because when I travel I'd like to have some veggies or fruit on a daily basis to keep a good bowel movement iykyk. Honestly, I was kind of disappointed with the fruit I got. The strawberries were sour, the cantaloupe looked like a 38 year single dad had just pulled an all nighter and then headed for an 8 hour shift, and the pineapple was ok. The over easy eggs were good. They were actually eggy in a good way. You know how sometimes you have an egg and it literally doesn't taste like anything? That was not the case here. The bacon was the best, it was thick-cut yet crispy. And the sourdough was sourdoughing. My partner had the huevos on our first day, he said it was okay. On the second day, I had oatmeal. I don't know why, but when I read the menu, the oatmeal sounded so much exciting. But when I actually got it, it looked kind of boring, just like the one I make at home. It was good and did the work though. My partner had the "today's special," velvet cake toast. He said it was too chocolatey and the portion wasn't that big for the price. I had one bite, and honestly, I was fine with the chocolatey taste. So if you're a chocolate fan, you might want to try it, otherwise skip it. I guess if I had ordered my usual two egg breakfast, it would probably have been great.
