What a nostalgic throw back for us! We haven't been to a De Dutch in over 26 years due to residing out of the country. These famous Pannenkoeken-Dutch pancakes are massive in diameter, rich tasting yet very thin. I think of them as New York style pizza slices. Prior to eating them, I fold the pancakes in half like I do my slices of NY pizzas slices! Dessert for breakfast? Why not? The caramel apple and REAL whip cream were my indulgent choice of sweet toppings. In between dolloping the whipped cream on top, I savored my hot soy latte. It is clear that regulars love this place and the staff. I must mention that this morning, stellar server Mina , made our visit exceptional! This is our go to breakfast place. There's another pancake house by the quay, but it's always full and frankly not worth the wait imo. Every time we come to De Dutch, we get seated fairly quickly. The servers are friendly and very accommodating. Plus the pancakes are so good. I always have a half and half of something sweet and savoury. Plus a side of bacon and eggs. The portions of the pancake are enough, but I just gotta have my eggs and bacon for breakfast :) Overall pretty great place if you want to have a diner style kind of breakfast place. read more

This De Dutch is located in a strip mall in New West and it has that very European feel and design to it, sort of reminds me of windmills. We went during Halloween and they really went all out on the decorations. Every wall, window, counter top, ceiling had some sort of spooky decoration. All the severs were also dressed up as well, which was nice. My daughter was a bit scared of the reapers hanging from the ceiling lol Service was friendly and pretty quick. We ordered the da bacon and mushroom pannekoek, and the kids meal triple Berry pannekoek. The portion size is great, and you can eat it with a knife and fork sliced or rolled, and torn by hand like my little one. My only complaint is that I thought the triple Berry was fresh fruit and not a compote. It was very sweet and sticky, and my little one would have preferred fresh berries. De Dutch Pannekoek House has been a staple in the Columbia Square complex in New West for a number of years but I never found a reason to drop by here until recently, when I discovered my planned destination was closed (that actually happens to me more frequently than I care for). The interior is a bit tired but relatively clean and what you'd expect of most chain breakfast joints such as Ihop or Denny's. I decided to order their DeBakon Avocado Benny ($16.25) on rusk with fruit. For those unaccustomed to "rusk", it's a Danish staple made with double-cooked toast that resembles hardtack and is quite dry and crumbly. Because of this, I ordered my eggs to be poached soft, so the runny yolk would be able to offset the dryness of the rusk. Unfortunately, what arrived at my table was what could only be described as a hard boiled egg. I could tell immediately when my knife touched the centre of the egg that it was way too firm for a soft poached egg. I mean seriously? It couldn't have been any harder if it was on Viagra. While I'm not one who usually sends back food... I just had to in this case. My replacement dish (which did arrive fairly quickly) was much better and had a soft poached egg that yielded the requisite runny yolk to coat my rusk. As for the rest of my meal, the potato hash was okay but lacked crispness to the exterior (I like my hash a bit crispy) and the fruit wasn't as fresh as what you get at Angelina's nearby. Overall, the rusk probably wasn't the best choice but I'll take ownership on that one. I decided that I should probably come back for a revisit to see if the issue with the egg was just a one-off thing. This time, however, I opted for one of their signature pannekoek (a thin, Dutch-style pancake which can either be served sweet or savory). The Boer Pannekoek ($20.75) roughly translates to "Farmer's Pancake" and is a hearty meal comprised of ham, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and eggs on top of the pannekoek. I'll give this for them... they really know how to make a pancake. It's a very thin and soft pancake - almost like a creamy crepe. The eggs this time, had a nice runny yolk and crisp edges and the ham and bacon were on point. The only things that I thought needed more work in this dish were the hash browns (not crispy) and the sausage (seemed too much like a hot dog). It's not really a cheap breakfast but it is quite filling. On my next visit, I picked a dish which isn't normally associated with Dutch food... the Chorizo Quesadilla ($17) made with black beans, cheese, onions, corn, and quinoa filling and served with a lemon and avocado cream sauce as well as salsa. For my side, I picked the kettle-cooked chips and dip. The best part of this dish has to be the kettle chips in my opion... a nice crispy/crunchy bite to the chips (the dip was very similar to tartar sauce). The quesadilla was what you would expect from a place that doesn't specialize in Mexican food... I thought the addition of the quinoa in the filling was a bit of an odd choice and the sliced/diced chorizo sausage was a bit lacking (wish they used crumbled chorizo instead). Overall, very hit-and-miss here. If you do visit, go for the pannekoek. read more

I've been a fan of De Dutch because it has a very casual ambiance and I like their simple, yet wide range of options on the menu. There's something for everyone. In terms of service, this location was a little slow. I get that it's busy, but I could hear people at the table behind me constantly complaining about how none of the stuff she had asked for had been tended to, even after having asked multiple times. One of my childhood favorite places back on Vancouver island. De Dutch is well known for their pannaoko (thin crepe) with either a fruit or savory top. If you are coming here to order a traditional breakfast like eggs, bacon, toast, and sausage then this place may not live up to your expectations as it's mediocre at best for other dishes outside pannaoko. Overall we always enjoy the food at this chain. It was my first time at this location on a Monday before noon. New 'n shinny with happy cheery serves to match! A new De Dutch franchise has recently opened in New West in Columbia Square. According to local newspaper, it's run by the Jang's family. I saw the lady owner there once. She seems very friendly and approachable. The recently renovated restaurant is bright and shinny. I particularly like the booths under sky light/green house area. All female servers are cheerful and helpful. The breakfast is reasonably priced and the portion is generous. I was there with my parents on a Sat morning, and that place was packed! It's nice to see many young families with toddlers going there to have brunch. A good place to go for breakfast or lunch in New West. The food is always good and we've always had really good service. In fact, when we went there for my son's birthday, they took the time create a funny face on his pancake using fruit (at no extra charge). The portions are large and there is a wide selection of savoury and sweet. A few minor quibbles make this a four star review instead of five. On the weekends, the place is always packed and there's a wait to get seated. And they chronically seem understaffed -- our server always seems to be constantly rushing around. This is literally the best breakfast I've ever had in a chain. My partner and I had both never been and so we finally got there. I think we ended up going three times in the first week because we just couldn't get enough. Amazing service, super informed staff, friendly, but not annoying. They do gluten free as well as free range eggs here. I almost always get the gluten free veggie hash on a pannecoke. I've also had the perogie one and it was good too. Coffee? drip, americano, or french press. I'm so obsessed with this places. It's like a super fancy restaurant in every way but in a diner setting. I bring everyone here. read more

Well we all know De Dutch is expensive so that's only a small part of the rating. I had the De Bakon Hash - which came with a Pannekoek. It arrived hot, but the hollandaise was about a 1/2 teaspoon and was broken...I chose to just accept it as it's better for my health that way LOL. Unfortunately the server didn't bring butter, and when we got his attention he took several minutes to return so no melt would happen on our cold and somewhat undercooked Pannekoek. I feel for $18 I can get a much better meal elsewhere, Pubs nearby offer $6-$8 breakfasts so I'll stick with those. read more

We ordered a couple of cheese omelettes, two coffees, one juice. Our bill (after 20% tip): almost sixty bucks. The food was okay; the service was good; the ambiance is kind of like a college cafeteria. The server asked us whether we wanted regular eggs or free range eggs, but failed to mention that free-range eggs are $1.50 extra per order, so my cheese omelette was $17.50. Yes, that's right: SEVENTEEN-FIFTY FOR A CHEESE OMELETTE. Next time, we'll go back to our regular place--White Spot on Marine. It ain't cheap, but the food's MUCH better; the food's cheaper; and the atmosphere is warm and comfortable. Oh and the bill for a similar order (with tip) is closer to forty bucks. The quality of De Dutch is similar to Denny's, which I don't mind, but Denny's is about half the price, and they don't try to rip you off. Oddly enough, I ate at De Dutch once about fifteen years ago, and had the exact same impression. Never again. read more

This is my first time to try De Dutch. I've been wanting to eat there but never got the chance to so so. I had their scrambled eggs hash and it's soo good, especially the hashbrown. I forgot what the soup was called but it's tasty and looked nutritious. The hot choco was great as well. I liked the ambience the most. It's so cozy and the servers are nice. - customer service was horrible - food wasn't made properly, upset my stomach, when I had told the waitress that i wasn't feeling well due to the food. She didn't even offer to refund it, kept saying there's nothing wrong with the food! She kept stating that the cucumbers might be the problem, but didn't even bother saying I'll just refund it! The problem was with the entire wrap! Even after we had told her multiple times it wasn't cooked properly and it just didn't taste good, it upset our stomach to the point where we didn't feel like eating it at all! Not even worth going to this restaurant, she didn't even treat us properly. Kept trying to switch our words, she gave us a 10% off.. but we just didn't want to pay for the wrap since it upset our stomach! We weren't feeling good, the chicken was un-cooked! She still didn't offer to refund it! She also, talked bad about us to other customers. The manager needs to train their waiters and how to treat the customers properly. If something is not good, they should be able to refund it at least! Since there's a virus going around, every other restaurants refund it back as soon as you let them know it's upsetting your stomach! The place was not sanitized at all, in my opinion the restaurant should be shut down! Or have proper trained waiters working. Who know what they're doing! It was our first time there and we just had a upset stomach! Didn't feel like eating anything else! We were really mad at the waitress we've spoke to her in a proper manner, and still ended up paying for the food that made us sick from! She still didn't offer anything! Long post warning but starting from the beginning. When we got there and waiting for a table, saw a skip the dish guy coming to pick up food. After he left, saw someone run after him with the rest of the food, but he was gone. Obviously didn't pack the food properly. That's even before getting seated. Once we got seated, I ordered a caeser extra spicy extra dark. She said sure (spicy caesers are written on the wall when you walk in btw). I got just Clamato, no seasoning. I asked for worcestershire and tabasco to season myself but it was still so awful (I'm a server and prep all my drinks...so I know...so whatever "Clamato" they are using tastes like you are drinking ketchup). So gross. Then we got our food. Ordered the BLT and added the fried egg and avocado. That was awful!!! The bread wasn't even toasted and everything was just laying scattered on top. The portions were average for the high prices paid, the food was OK, couldn't say it was outstanding but it wasn't bad, but the service was horrendous, and because of that, I'll never go back, even though this place is walking distance for me. This location used to be amazing under old ownership. Now it is terrible. Food was burned and disgusting. Considering how it is pricy, now it is not worth it. My husband and I always went to De Dutch in Victoria and when we moved to Vancouver, it became "our" breakfast place. We have been to Richmond and Hasting locations before and they are always high standard. We moved in New West near this location, and were so excited how good it was. Now, what a disappointment. The new owner changed seating and now it is overcrowded. She needs to treat her staff better, learn restaurant management and bring food quality back to where it was. My husband and I went there for brunch on a Sunday. It was very busy. I got a pannekoek and bacon and was very happy with it. You have to ask for butter though which is a bit of a pain. My husband got eggs Benedict. The hash browns were limp and greasy. There was almost no hollandaise and we he asked for more from the manager/owner she wasn't very receptive. When he was brought more it was thin and broken. Our waitress was very good. I won't go there again and recommend if you do go to stick with the pannekoek. read more
