    Pannekoken

We were seated quickly. We ate the pannekoken. My husband and I split one. My son got his own, but he couldn't finish it. The food was delish. They charged extra for maple syrup, so we didn't get any.

Came here mainly because we needed to find a breakfast place that was gluten-free for my girlfriend's needs, and I learned that Dutch pannekoeken can actually be made gluten-free. I, on the other hand, love me my omelets, so I got the Meat Lover's Omelet with a ton of extra hash browns (which were really just small potatoes...I guess things are different in Canada). Thought it was a really good omelet, heavy on the eggs and cheese which I like. Service, which apparently is the bane of almost everyone that reviews this place, seemed to fine to me. Not sure why De Dutch gets such a bad rap, as I had a good experience here.

    smoked salmon hash & eggs

I was in the area and decided to come here as I wanted something simple. I thought about getting pancakes but didn't want to eat too much. I got the smoked salmon hash and eggs. I guess it was bigger than I thought it would be. The smoked salmon was between the hash and cheese so the cheese is all over the salmon. I wished it wasn't below the cheese. It was topped off with two eggs. It was good and they gave a lot of hash. I didn't finish it as it was a bit too much. The server was friendly and quick. The food came out very quickly too but then again, it wasn't too busy and I did get there just before 2pm. They close for the day at 3pm.

DeBakon Avocado Benny with "soft" poached eggs
    PennyandRusty P.

De Dutch Pannekoek House has been a staple in the Columbia Square complex in New West for a number of years but I never found a reason to drop by here until recently, when I discovered my planned destination was closed (that actually happens to me more frequently than I care for). The interior is a bit tired but relatively clean and what you'd expect of most chain breakfast joints such as Ihop or Denny's. I decided to order their DeBakon Avocado Benny ($16.25) on rusk with fruit. For those unaccustomed to "rusk", it's a Danish staple made with double-cooked toast that resembles hardtack and is quite dry and crumbly. Because of this, I ordered my eggs to be poached soft, so the runny yolk would be able to offset the dryness of the rusk. Unfortunately, what arrived at my table was what could only be described as a hard boiled egg. I could tell immediately when my knife touched the centre of the egg that it was way too firm for a soft poached egg. I mean seriously? It couldn't have been any harder if it was on Viagra. While I'm not one who usually sends back food... I just had to in this case. My replacement dish (which did arrive fairly quickly) was much better and had a soft poached egg that yielded the requisite runny yolk to coat my rusk. As for the rest of my meal, the potato hash was okay but lacked crispness to the exterior (I like my hash a bit crispy) and the fruit wasn't as fresh as what you get at Angelina's nearby. Overall, the rusk probably wasn't the best choice but I'll take ownership on that one. I decided that I should probably come back for a revisit to see if the issue with the egg was just a one-off thing. This time, however, I opted for one of their signature pannekoek (a thin, Dutch-style pancake which can either be served sweet or savory). The Boer Pannekoek ($20.75) roughly translates to "Farmer's Pancake" and is a hearty meal comprised of ham, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and eggs on top of the pannekoek. I'll give this for them... they really know how to make a pancake. It's a very thin and soft pancake - almost like a creamy crepe. The eggs this time, had a nice runny yolk and crisp edges and the ham and bacon were on point. The only things that I thought needed more work in this dish were the hash browns (not crispy) and the sausage (seemed too much like a hot dog). It's not really a cheap breakfast but it is quite filling. On my next visit, I picked a dish which isn't normally associated with Dutch food... the Chorizo Quesadilla ($17) made with black beans, cheese, onions, corn, and quinoa filling and served with a lemon and avocado cream sauce as well as salsa. For my side, I picked the kettle-cooked chips and dip. The best part of this dish has to be the kettle chips in my opion... a nice crispy/crunchy bite to the chips (the dip was very similar to tartar sauce). The quesadilla was what you would expect from a place that doesn't specialize in Mexican food... I thought the addition of the quinoa in the filling was a bit of an odd choice and the sliced/diced chorizo sausage was a bit lacking (wish they used crumbled chorizo instead). Overall, very hit-and-miss here. If you do visit, go for the pannekoek.

    Boer's Breakfast
    Joe B.

For years I have wanted to visit a De Dutch locations knowing absolutely nothing about them or what they serve. Well, it turns out one of the items on their menu is the Boer's Breakfast. This one takes a very, very large appetite! A plate sized pannekoek is topped with ham, bratwurst, eggs and hashbrowns with a side of hollandaise. It is a formidable plate of food and pretty darn tasty!

It was clean and bright and we got a nice seat by the window. Our server was quick to say hello and take our drink order. I'm always impressed with the breadth of the menu here. I landed on the Seafood Yummy Hash, and hubby had the Big breakfast, again. Coffee and water came first, and we were both delighted at how good the coffee was. Most diner style restaurants have a very burnt tasting coffee but this was very smooth. Off to a good start! Food came out very quickly and looked amazing. Both dishes were beautifully plated, and the fruit on the big breakfast was not a typical canned special. Things took a turn at the first bite though. Taste 10/10, but our food was cold. Like cold, cold which was surprising given the restaurant was mostly empty, and it came out so quick. The quality of the ingredients was excellent, and very obviously in-house made, but both of our potatoes were quite literally cold, with some of the baby potatoes being hard in the middle still. The sourdough was also stale, but not just stale in taste, it was almost like it had been toasted well in advance and then plated. The review on the big breakfast remains the same as last time. Sausage was amazing, but the bacon and the ham left something to be desired. The server took some time to return back to our table and check in on us. When she did I told her our food was cold. She just kind of made a face, said oooooh, apologized, and that was it. She also had to be reminded to refill our coffees a second time after asking. The last shock came with the bill. While the prices overall were reasonable for very large servings of food, two black coffees came to $11. I know we raved about them at the beginning of the review, but not sure they were $11 good. Really wanted to love it, but not sure it lived up to expectations this time.
