We love The Tipper. It's a great joint with friendly staff and good quality, fresh and delicious food (and good value). Parking can be a challenge, and the furnishings are a little tired, but it's comfortable and friendly. Came here with a friend on a Saturday morning for some brunch. Lively atmosphere in the restaurant and it didn't seem too busy, but seating did take longer than I expected. At one point I wasn't sure if they remembered us or not. However, we eventually did get seated in a very comfortable booth, which made me quite pleased. For some strange reason I just love booth seating in restaurants, but the booths here are particularly cozy due to the high partitions, wooden toolbox condiment trays and....lumbar support pillows for the bench?? As you can tell, I was a big fan of the booth. Lots of breakfast options, but the Buffalo Joe's special immediately popped out to the both of us. Hard to find good buffalo in the city, especially for brunch. The portion size is fairly generous - four slices of toast, a heap of buffalo and eggs, and a few scoops of potatoes. The meal hit all the right notes - the buffalo is tender and moist, potatoes are nice and crispy, and eggs are fluffy. I ordered a coffee as well, which I found to be pretty good! (though I am not a coffee snob - I just dislike sour coffees) I will say that with everything blended together it becomes more of a hash, which I wasn't quite expecting when the menu said "buffalo patty". This made it a bit difficult to tease out the different flavors of peppers and mushrooms and feta, largely because buffalo is such a dominant odor. The servers here are great. My significant other and I decided to visit here instead of the Vietnamese restaurant next to it and that was a poor decision. Our server was super sweet but it seemed like she was the only one there. I felt so bad. The atmosphere was kinda sad and dark but the wings were not terrible. We ordered teriyaki chicken wings, my significant other had the bacon burger and I ordered a chicken sandwich with the clam chowder. Both the burger and chicken sandwich were dry and bland... my partner had to put the teriyaki sauce in the burger to add some flavour to it. My calm chowder was mediocre but I'm not mad at it. Nestled on the corner of Kingsway and Victoria street, this neighborhood gem is a must try. Usually we go here for breakfast, but decided to change it up and go here for dinner. It did not disappoint! I got the cajun chicken burger with a side order of the daily soup. The chicken was seasoned well and perfectly cooked. With the coupon, you can get two very nice, White Spot-grade entrees with drinks for around $30 all in. Without the coupon, you are looking at over $40, tax and tip. The food here can be hit or miss. The steaks can occasionally be overcooked due to their thinness. Additionally, they tend to have a bit more fat and gristle than I would like. Their blackened salmon was also quite dry, and it tasted like it may have had a little bit of freezer burn. Sauteed vegetables and side dishes were spot on, though. On the other hand, their breakfast offerings are consistently good. Probably a safer bet to use the coupon for their pancakes, omelettes and eggs Benedict. Tipper is a great value when you have a coupon, and I would recommend that you only go when you have a coupon in hand. read more

Back to The Tipper. After my mediocre experience last time, I normally wouldn't go again, but I was there to meet someone and it was their choice, so I had to make the best of it. I was careful not to order the same thing at least. Linguine Tip ($15.50) sautéed sweet peppers, mushrooms, avocado, feta in a Cajun cream sauce. Pasta sauces are made to order served with grilled garlic bread. -This was actually pretty decent. Price feels a bit steep (after tax and tip you're close to $20 for this one plate) but they aren't skimpy on the mushrooms and feta and giving you a half avocado. -Sauce was alright and with spicy-heat bite so be careful if you can't handle the heat. Not super tasty but nothing bad per se, certainly not a thin sauce. Noodles well coated instead of pasta drowned in an excess of sauce for you to sort out yourself. -"Garlic bread" seemed more like toast with garlic-less butter. But it's more or less what you get if you buy one of those take-home-to-bake garlic breads from the supermarket. Overall not bad for price and definitely way better than the burger I had last time. read more

We made a last minute decision to stay in Canada one more night and didn't have dinner reservations, which is a big no no on NYE. I came across The Tipper on yelp and was expecting at least decent diner food. We ordered a salmon burger with seafood chowder and a beef burger (+cheddar and bacon). There were only 3 other tables (2 couples and 1 single person). The food took almost 40 minutes to get to us. However, there was only 1 person in the kitchen and it is NYE after all. So, the extended wait is understandable even if the extended wait wasn't addressed when the food was brought. I was so excited to dig into my burger once it got to me. I took the first bite and it was so dry and bitter. Once I flipped it over to the non-cheesed side, I saw that it was completely black. I am a huge fan of a good char, but this was BURNT. I wish I snapped a picture of that burnt side, but I returned the burger while the first bite was still in my mouth. I can't comment on the fries because I never tried them. I showed the waitress the burnt burger and she did not seem phased by it/ appeared as if she didn't get why I was returning the food. She was nice enough though and asked if I wanted to order anything else, in which I declined. She also offered a free drink or dessert on the house, which I also declined because I honestly just wanted something good and savory (like a juicy burger). I had a bite of my husband's salmon burger and chowder. The chowder was room temperature and too salty for my taste - fine though. The salmon burger was also on the dry side and had a strong fishy flavor, but edible. Here's what bothered me even more than the burnt burger... I overheard the cook say "monkey see, monkey do" after the waitress told him the burger was returned. This was perhaps in reference to me returning my burger after one of the earlier tables sent their burnt burger back. WHY would I want to copy some other table instead of enjoying a long awaited meal on NYE? Maybe the preparation of the burger should be considered instead of making rude comments that the customer can hear. I will never return and do not recommend this place even if you are hungry and restaurant options are limited due to holiday or whatever reason. read more

This place really keeps it real, East Side style. Parking is available on the side streets behind the restaurant. The inside looks like any family-style diner, with nice worn seats and an older cozy feel. But this isn't the only reason to come here. And I'm not talking about the really friendly staff either. As Steven N. mentioned, the beer here are beautiful and cheap. $4 for a pint? Sold. Sure the restaurant is decent enough, but the REALLY cool thing about this place is the hidden "review room" in the back. Look behind the washrooms, and up the stairs. There is a room here with a stage and enough seating for 40. It's quite the jawdropper, in the WTF kind of way. Kind of like the inner circle in Eyes Wide Shut, but without the nudity. There's enough room there for a small band (3-5 members) to perform, and the sound equipment is all there too. Reminds me of those "Battle of the Band" type venues in highschool. And did I mention there's even a small private bar on the side? If this isn't street cred, I don't know what is. read more

My husband and I have been looking forward to trying the eggs benedict again so we decided to have a special valentine's brunch here. However, we were surprised and disappointed to find out that the eggs benny is only available on weekends and even then, you have to be early because they have a limited amount. After swallowing our disappointment, we decided to take the opportunity to try other items on the menu. My hubs had the sambal scramble and I had the mushroom cheddar omelette. You have a choice of requesting either one or two pieces of toast (it's the same price but they're being mindful of how much waste they create). The meal also comes with hand cut potatoes - these are seriously the best part of the meal. The sambal scramble was mildly flavourful and had a bit of heat that builds up as you eat. It's best enjoyed on top of buttered toast. The mushroom cheddar omelette was a little on the underwhelming side as it consisted of mushrooms... Cheddar cheese... And eggs. Maybe a bit of parsley or a bit of crunch from green onions could have helped with the greasy texture. My sourdough toast had the perfect crunch though and helped balance out the textures. My husband also ordered a coffee and enjoyed it immensely (beans are from JJ Beans). At the end of the day, the Tipper is a fair option for a diner style brunch without the hustle and bustle that is common at a Denny's or a White Spot. The prices are comparable and the ambiance is much much better. This place always has a killer playlist, great art pieces on the wall, and servers that are attentive enough to check on you without being too intrusive. read more

Service was agonizing. Dirty napkins, no coffee refills, no sincere help from the server, she would just rush by, glance at the table, not ask if we needed anything, and stunk of cigarettes. I love this restaurant! I have been coming here for over 9 years and it has always been consistently good! They are very kind and accommodating to kids of all sizes, even offering 1/2 size meals if you need them! They have food on the menu for everyone! Delicious burgers, the buffalo burger is my favourite with a poutine on the side! They have vegan and vegetarian options, even gluten free. So you can bring the entire family and be sure to make everyone happy! My favourite breakfast items are the breakfast burrito or the veggie hash. They make their own salsa to go into the burrito, so fresh and good! Also my son says his tipper toque is the only one he has that is cozy and doesn't scratch! The best thing I can say about this place is that their burgers are awesome, the next best thing is that some of their beer specials are great (hello pumpkin ale!). Um warning. The pumpkin ale is _strong_. (Translation: 2 pints and I was teetering home versus just walking) I don't recommend their chicken wrap if you have a mayo allergy (egg yoke) like me because when I ordered it without the offending allergy inducing mayo they instead put no sauce or seasoning at all inside and it tasted less than ideal or more I've waterlogged all-day soaking chicken in a wrap. But hey perhaps you're lucky and can eat the Chipotle mayo (lucky battled). Their chicken wings and fries are pretty yum too. read more

I had high expectations for this place based on the reviews. We arrived before 11am on a Saturday and the restaurant was only a quarter full. Our waiter was good and he provided good service but the food was really nothing to write about. The 3 eggs breakfast was what it sounds like. The bacon was so small hiding behind the toast and potatoes. It's like, where's the meat on this plate. I ordered the standard eggs Benedict, how could you go wrong? I have to say the eggs were cooked very nicely, however, they sat atop a huge bun and topped with cold hollandaise sauce. The Tipper gets better and better each time I visit. The owner actually read my last review and decided to call me. Last time I was there, I complained about food coming out too slowly, the back room being too cold, and heaters as well as the TV not working. Well, he told me all those things were addressed and invited me back. That was HUGE for me. First of all, he fixed all the negative things I had mentioned in my review and second of all, he actually called me. I really appreciate businesses that care about what their customers thought. When I met him in person, he was sincere and a down to earth person. What a great guy! The food was delicious. My husband and I ordered the Naughty and Nice Poutine. What an adorable name! The "Naughty" was the poutine, which the gravy was made from vegetables and was flavorful without being too salty. (I hate poutine that is too salty.) They use cheddar cheese in their poutine as well, which I liked. The "Nice" was the salad and was fabulous. They make their own dressing and you can taste the freshness in both dressing and crisp vegetables. Surprisingly, my husband actually ate most of the salad and he's not a big salad person. We also had the BLT sandwich with a side of seafood chowder. The BLT was on sourdough bread and had a nice smokey taste. My husband and I gobbled up the sandwich and enjoyed every bite, we didn't even leave the crust. The seafood chowder was thick and full of seafood. It was my favorite thing out of all our dishes and full of quality ingredients. They don't use too many fillers since I don't recall getting a lot of potato in my chowder.
