I love going to Longtail Kitchen for the authentic Thai food. Their menu is simple but everything on it is delicious. Although it is a bit hard to find (it is tucked inside the food court of the River Market), it is getting busy through word of mouth. Since it is part of the food court, you order your food at the counter and then find a table to sit at. They will usually bring out the food to you when it is ready. When we go, we usually order their deep fried chicken wings and fish balls to go with a tofu pad thai. Nothing beats their fresh off the wok pad thai!
Cute little shop with a nice outdoor seating area, good food, good service. Can't here one afternoon and literally everything on the menu sounds fantastic. They were sold out of the squid dish that sounded most appealing to us. We ended up ordering the mee gorang and a couple of beers. Sat outside and the view was lovely. The mee gorang was really good, I would definitely order it again! They have a self serve water station and a few kitchen items to buy in their market. I use the same Thai tea they will here at home, and the fish sauce as well! Overall great place, I would love to come back to try more things!
We had a wonderful experience at this spot! The highlight had to be the cumin braised lamb; it was the best lamb I've ever had. Rich, soft, and incredibly flavorful. I also enjoyed the pad see ew and the shrimp curry. I personally didn't like the pad thai that much but I think that is just a personal taste of mine. And all of our food arrived within 15 minutes, which is exceptional! Portions are a bit small though and the ambiance is okay. Customer service was great. But I would definitely come back here again :)
I have tried more items and generally they are good. My favorite dishes so far: - fried chicken wings - basil beef and fried egg on rice - fried cauliflower - Chinese sausage fried rice I still find the fried noodle dishes a bit hit and miss as sometimes they are too salty. I am just glad there is a place in downtown New West selling Southeast Asian dishes.
I've been here quite a bit and it is usually one of my go to restaurants at the River Market. Their food standard is usually 4 stars. However on this particular experience, I had asked for my pad thai with prawns to have no peanuts as the person I was sharing with is allergic, and lo and behold.....there were peanuts mixed in and it ended up being not a very enjoyable evening for us. Not sure what the mix up was this time around but it downgraded my review from four to three stars.
I have been meaning to try this thai kitchen for the longest time! Seldomly do I find a good Thai spot, let alone it being around the New West area, which is a lot closer to home than downtown! This is a fast casual restaurant where you order upfront and have the waiter serve the food at your table. It is owned by the same people who run Fat Mao & Maenam, and is a perfect spot for a casual lunch or afternoon meal! Not to mention it's right by the Quay, so in the summer you can catch a nice outdoor patio view as well. Pad Thai Prawns (4/5) - $16 Taste: I ordered the pad thai with medium spicy and that was the perfect level of kick needed! The noodles had a nice chew, the flavour was a good level of saltiness and sweetness, and I could taste the smokiness from the wok incorporated in the noodles. Downside when served in a takeout container is that the noodles were stuck together a little. Portion Size: Large portion for 1 or shareable between 2 people with an average sized appetite. Longtail Wings (3/5) - $10 Taste: The wings were pretty standard, deep fried golden & crispy, juicy and delicious! They were good but not amazing, I wasn't a fan of the sauce as it was a little too much on the sweet side for my liking. Portion Size: 6 pieces [Value for Money] Not cheap for a fast casual restaurant, I would say this would be at a similar price point for a normal sit down Thai restaurant. However, I do think the quality of the food justifies the price.
There's nothing like a nice hearty meal on a cold night after a movie. Came by to Longtail for dinner on one of those occasions. Was told I had to stop by and try the food here. Its inside the New West River Market and not a spot I'd probably visit without the recommendation. The shop is pretty neat as it looks like you can buy the actual ingredients of the food served. Grabbed the Singapore Fried Noodles. It was really good overall. Singapore Fried Noodle is one of the dishes I really enjoy at Asian restaurants. I liked the mix of veggies and meats in the serving. The flavour was really good as well. Recommend folks drop by Longtail for some good noodles. Probably gonna be part of my plans the next time I check out a movie in the area.
Got the fried cauliflower with spicy Mayo and the drunken noodles with chicken. I liked the cauliflower, and the spicy mayo was tasty! The drunken noodles were fine. Not something I'd care to get again, but overall it was good.
I recognized this spot as I was strolling down the New West Quay as I had seen it prior and remembered it was pretty highly reviewed! The restaurant is quaintly located by the boardwalk just outside the market. First thing I will say, is that the restaurant lives up to its high review! I asked for their recommendation which was the pad see ew and it did not disappoint. Here is a good definition of thai cooking, quote "Thai chef McDang characterises Thai food as demonstrating "intricacy; attention to detail; texture; color; taste". It is a blend of ingredients when juggled together creates something amazing. The strong aromatics, sweet, savory, and and a spicy edge to give it a little kick. This is what I thought of while I was eating this dish and it was simply amazing. All the ingredients felt like they were blended so well and that there were many various components to it as well. This is most amazing when no one ingredient overpowers the other, which is what happened here, every ingredient worked in harmony. The dish also comes with a tangy side you can add and adjust to suit your preference. Overall, amazing staff, food, location and I will definitely be recommending to friends, family, and others. Loving this place! I got back from Thailand a week ago and coming here helped me relive all the delicious food memories - not to mention it's also cheap compares to the other places in Vancouver. Thai tea tasted like how it's supposed to taste although a bit sweet for my liking. My date and I got curry fish balls, Chinese sausage fried rice with 2 fried eggs, and prawn padthai. They were delicious, flavourful and portions were massive! Strong (but tasty) flavour of fish sauce (main ingredient for Thai cooking!) In all of the dishes. I would definitely eat here again :) I like the fact that their utensils are biodegradable!
We discovered this little restaurant when we were exploring the Westminster Quay. There is very limited seating inside (maybe 2 or 3 tables) and then a bunch outside. The food came pretty quick and in to go paper boxes. We ordered Spring rolls to start. These were very crispy and had noodles inside the filling which I loved! I ordered the pad Thai with shrimp and my other half ordered pork belly with gai lan. Both dishes were good. The pad Thai wasn't anything the blew me away but it was tasty and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. The pork belly was nice and crispy and the gai lan was not over cooked, bright green and yummy. The heat was nice too, not overly spicy but they do ask you if spice is ok so I'm sure you can have it without if you choose. My only gripe was the price, for takeout style, they had indoor nice restaurant ambience pricing. This place is not that. Parking is kind of annoying in this area, street parking for pay and parking lots, also have to pay. Overall I liked it!
Another must try restaurant in New West. In my opinion, the best chicken wings locally and their spicy dishes are quite spicy but it still retained plenty of flavour.
I love Longtail's chicken wings. So got their signature chicken wings. It was very unique. It was nice and crispy. My favorite was their sauce. Its like a fish sauce with a nice kick to it. Not very similar to the ones you get at Vietnamese restaurants. One thing to note is that they are not very consistent. My friend odered the same thing and I noticed mine had the crispy garlic, chives and green onions on top. My friend had nothing topped with her wings. Anyways, I will have to come back to try out their other things on the menu.
longtail kitchen at the new west quay was the unanimous choice for our group. we visited on a friday afternoon, ordered and paid at the cashier, and our food arrived at the table all at once. the space is casual and compact, with a wall displaying thai pantry items, sauces, cookbooks, and packaged noodles that give it a small market like feel. the warm wood feature wall and colourful seating add some character, while the handwritten menu board above the counter keeps things simple and approachable. the portions looked small at first but ended up being just enough. i ordered the pad see ew beef. while it wasn't as saucy as i had hoped, it was still very tasty. the noodles were missing the wok hei i was looking for, but the dish was well seasoned and satisfying. the accompanying chilli offered a pleasant kick without overwhelming the flavours. everyone in our group enjoyed their dishes, which included pad thai chicken, green papaya salad, and basil beef with rice and fried egg. the first few bites were delicious, though both beef dishes became noticeably salty as we worked our way through them. longtail kitchen is part of chef angus an's restaurant group, which includes maenam, sainam, sen pad thai, and fat mao noodles. the group has received recognition from vancouver magazine, with maenam serving as its award winning flagship restaurant. overall, longtail kitchen delivers tasty thai comfort food in a casual setting. while some dishes could benefit from a lighter hand with the seasoning and a bit more wok hei, it remains a solid option for a relaxed meal with friends. read more

If you want consistently great Thai fusion in New West, Longtail Kitchen never misses. As the sister restaurant to Maenam, you can really taste that same attention to balance, depth, and quality in every dish. My partner and I are regulars here. Some of our go-to favourites: green curry, pad see ew, gai lan with pork belly, and the Thai fried rice with grilled pork. The flavours are super consistent every single visit, which honestly is half the battle with takeout spots. Their rotating specials are also worth watching for m, and are always fun when there's something new in the mix. (my pictures don't do justice) It's definitely a bit pricier than your average quick Thai spot... however, the ingredients taste fresh and the portions are satisfying. Love the little thoughtful touches too: self-serve water station, compostable containers and cutlery, and an easy casual setup that works perfectly for a Quay lunch or dinner. I'm giving it a 4-star because the place closes at 6pm Mon-Thu and at 7pm on all other days. I always feel like I need to rush or have early dinner if I wanted to grab food from here. All in all, this is a solid Thai food option in New West. Basically, if Thai street food and elevated comfort food had a waterfront glow-up, this would be it! read more

Been wanting to try their food for a while so I decided to order from them via Ubereats! I decided to order the chicken pad thai and a side of the sweet chili fish balls What I liked about the pad thai is that they used dark chicken meat and the pieces were so big, juicy and flavourful. They also used a tamarind base sauce which was so delicious and the rice noodles were wide and had a nice chewy texture. The portion was pretty big too and took me two sittings to finish. The fish balls were really good and was garnished with fried onions/shallots and parsley. I really liked the sweet chilli dipping sauce cause it gave the fish balls a nice sweetness. Pretty good first experience with Longtail so far, I will return to try more items on the menu. read more
I've heard nothing but good things about Longtail Kitchen so I was expecting big, bold flavours coming in. It's located in the River Market of the Quay, which also houses one of their sister restaurants, Freebird Chicken Shack. They also have three other spots: Maenam Thai, Fat Mao Noodles and Sen Pad Thai. We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon. The inside wasn't too busy but most people were taking their food outside or to the food court. There were only two guys running the show which was impressive. The menu is up on the chalkboard out front: snacks, rice, noodles and drinks. They have Steel & Oak beer available. - Thai iced tea ($3.50) - not too sweet. Pretty subtle and they have a stack of drinks already premade. - Bicol express ($13.00) - came with a side of rice. There was pork belly, green beans, red and yellow peppers and green onion in a coconut cream curry sauce. It was flavourful, spicy and had depth. Way better than I expected. The portion was bigger than it looked. - Singapore chicken noodle ($11.00) - again, this was well balanced in flavour and spice. I've had Singapore noodles at many Chinese places but this one was excellent. All the dishes we had were great. Definitely need to return to try the rest of the menu. 4.5 stars. read more
First time here and this place was very busy during lunch time weekends with only one cook. The place is a bit small but the food was very good in a very reasonable price. Definitely will go back here to try other dishes. read more

Perhaps an outlier, but kind of disappointed at this hyped up place. I have wanted to try it since it first opened but never had a chance until today. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and ordered chicken wings, pad see uu, and a Thai milk Thai. The milk tea was meh. It seems like it's been in the fridge for awhile. Not sure if there was ice at one point, but definitely none by the time it got to me. Taste a bit water down imo. Pad see uu beef - I appreciate the generous portion of beef and greens and how the beef were all chopped up. But the dish itself was overly salty and I could only taste soy sauce with no other flavours. The chicken wings were the only highlight. Lightly battered, seasoned perfectly. Favorite part was the tamarind sauce, which paired well with the chicken. The overall experience is just alright. They ran out of water, napkins, and forks. I understand it's busy, but for the price it charge, I expected more. Parking nearby was $2.50/hour. read more
Technically a 3.5, but it just lacked the flavour that would've made it a 4. Portions and prices are average, and the Thai tea isn't very good. The food was better. Pad thai with prawns (3.5/5) Could've used more prawns, but the flavour was okay. It felt like something was missing though. Fried cauliflower (3.5/5) Not bad, but the taste is somewhat unique, and I'm still not sure if I like it or not. Chicken wings (3.5/5) Everyone said this was pretty good. Not the best food ever, but it's okay if you're hungry I guess. read more
I'm writing this this review as a patiently wait for our meal. I'm hoping it's worth the already 20min wait. (I'll come back and give my full review after I actually get my meal) Ok I'm back and unfortunately it was not worth the wait. The food was mediocre and the roti came out cold and greasy. The green papaya salad was not well balanced with a high degree of acidity. The Singapore style noodles and wings were good but unremarkable. Overall I can't say I would recommend this place (and I really don't like to give bad reviews). Sorry Longtail I really wanted to find a decent Thai place. read more

Talk about a hidden gem. We came here from our viewer recommendations for our show BestOf604 and the wings did not disappoint. Seasoned perfectly and paired with an amazing fish sauce, these wings will keep you licking your lips long after you finish. Besides wings, we also ordered the roti and the pad see ew with beef. The roti is crispy and airy unlike most other places that offer roti. For me, I like a chewy roti. The pad see ew was tasty as well but the noods were a bit firm which may be their signature style. Overall, for a casual dining experience, I can't complain cause the food delivers and they also offer craft beer. Will definitely be back the next time we're in New West. read more

Good food, good staff. It was our first time to try and checked out Longtail Kitchen. It did not disappoint. We ordered their specialty Longtail chicken wings (it's a must, guys!), Gai-lan and pork belly rice dish and Basil Beef and fried egg rice dish. We loved and enjoyed the Asian flavours. They don't have a long list of menu, but whatever that was offered are flavourful. Check them out, guys! read more
We came here with a group of 7 people, ordered a bunch of different dishes to try. Food was fresh and seasoned well, some of us found certain dishes a bit over seasoned but to some it was fine. Personal preference as we prefer more of a low sodium diet. We ordered; Roti and Peanut Sauce: These were delicious, crispy outside, most inside. Super light and airy with a hint of salt, add the peanut sauce and its the perfect combo. Chicken Wings: Light crispy batter with a vinegar soy based dipping sauce. These were tasty with or without the sauce, I personally found it a tad salty once you dip it in the sauce. Holy Basil Chicken: This dish had us a bit confused. This is made with ground chicken, we all expected chicken chunks. Topped with fried basil and rice topped with a sunny side up egg. Flavors were quite mild and did no scream basil to us. When you get the perfect bit of rice, egg yolk, chicken and some crushed chillis, it was a delightful bite. Pad Thai with Prawns: This was a hit, savory noodles, slight tang from the tamarind sauce, heat from the crushed chillis. Over all a well balanced dish. Gai-Lan and Pork Belly: This was too salty and greasy. Gai-lan was slightly overcooked and there was barely any pork belly present. Not everyone was able to try the belly due the minimal amounts. read more
Great location for those who need a place to eat -- with no reservations -- after that long walk/run/jog on the boardwalk. New Westminster Quay has really changed and it's really nice to see a casual dining place for Asian food. The southern coconut curry with rice was surprisingly spicy and very flavourful with a balanced portion of chicken and vegetables. There was a generous amount of sauce so when I mixed it with the rice, the dish was perfectly moist, not dry. The shaking beef tenderloin was good, but I wish there was a bit more sauce as it was a bit dry with the rice. It wasn't as spicy as the curry dish, which is perfect for anything who want a dish with meat that isn't all that spicy. Their pad Thai with tofu was an okay choice for anyone who doesn't eat meat or chooses to not eat meat. This dish tasted a bit too sweet for my taste, and I wished they added less sugar. Their crispy wings chicken was mostly delicious, but it would be even better if then added less sugar. It was perfectly fried, but it was not overly oily. read more

Very friendly and attentive staffs. A couple tables inside and outside. Washroom inside the building and it's clean. They are still open and able to dine in. A few different items on the menu but more at the downtown location. Occasionally they will have fried oysters if you ask (not on the menu), it's mostly at the downtown location but it's worth a try. Delicious food and didn't take too long. Reasonable prices and good portion even though it's a bit on the smaller side. Good food and it's a place I'd go back to and recommend to others read more

We came here because their reviews were good having higher scores. The interior design and style are well done. When we walked into the restaurant, we felt like we went to a restaurant in Thailand. We had to order the food at the counter. They asked us to wait for 10 mins. We grabbed a table that was facing the river. The view was nice. We ordered pad Thai prawns, crispy chicken wings and Thai iced milk tea. After we had the first bite of each of these food, oh my goodness! They tasted amazingly awesome! Mama Mia! It was so good! Of course their food relied on a lot of dressings and sauces but the combination was so good especially the pad Thai and crispy chicken wings. We could not find this excellent pad Thai anywhere else in Vancouver! The texture, flavour, and mix of ingredients created this wonderful dish! The portion was a bit small and it was pricy for a smaller portion but we thought it was worth it! We would like to come back and try other dishes of their Thai food! Yummy!! read more

I normally love to support local and artisan restaurants and shops, but unfortunately longtail has gone down and now the food is underwhelming. Dropped by to pick up some take out today, tofu pad thai, Singaporean vermicelli and green papaya salad (which now only available at the chicken place next door). The tofu pad thai was soggy, bland and no wok heat at all. I was most disappointed by its flavour because there wasn't any, except for the lime juice that was added to it after. I don't mind to pay more for good food, but that was a total waste of money. Singaporean vermicelli was mediocre, I have had much better ones at some hk style cafe. Bigger portion and more reasonable priced. The green papaya salad was the best out of the 3 items I have ordered. Having given them a few chances, I think it's time to move on.
