Oh Cypress Grill, how delicious you are. On our most recent visit to Cypress Grill, me and my girlfriend had an excellent time. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. Our drinks were never empty except the delicious cherry limeade they hand make there, we kept getting glass after glass of that. Watermelon mojito is a perfect summer drink. It was very refreshing, not too sweet with the perfect amount of fresh mint. I had the blackened catfish smothered in crawfish étouffée with dirty rice and mustard green. Wow~ it was delicious. My husband had the pot roast Po Boy which was done the way it's suppose to be. Average, overpriced. Had the oyster po'boy. Supposedly served with seasoned fries- the serving of fries was very small and the only seasoning was salt. When it said "seasoned" I assumed Cajun seasoned. The fries were not even that good. The po'boy was flavorless. The bread was good but the oysters had absolutely no flavor- basically couldn't taste them at all. I can get a better sandwich at Thundercloud. Sandwich & small serving of fries for $18. We had a wonderful dinner experience at Cypress Grill last night! We eat here quite often, but mostly just for brunch. (We love that they serve brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays!) We had seen on the menu that they had a new monthly dinner special that sounded SO good. We decided to give it a try. For appetizers, we had a great Shrimp Cocktail, which had quite large and perfectly cooked shrimp, as well as a cup of Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. Both were great! Now....on to the entree: Cajun Pork Belly Burnt Ends served with Jalapeno and Corn Johnny Cake, Maple Pan Sauce, and Crispy Onion Strings. It was outstanding! So often, pork belly is cooked so poorly. Not here!! You got the great flavor and texture of the pork, and the fat was rendered out beautifully. The sauce was delicious, as was the johnny cake. We will definitely be back for more of this monthly special in the next few weeks! The service is always great here. We had Rachel as our server and she always shines and provides great, cheerful service! I had heard about this place from a friend from Louisiana that said it was just as good as his grandmother's back home. Pretty good endorsement right? We happened upon this place on Thursday night, which happened to be live music night. Lucky us. A little jazz quartet with a lead tenor sax. Nice. Service was super friendly and great. The food definitely stood out as being different than typical cajun/NOLA cuisine that I've had. I can't really put my finger on it, but it was in the spices/herbs they used to season their dishes. I had the BBQ shrimp boil which was pretty awesome. It was some kind of amazing worcestershire sauce ale beer concoction which I had never had before.....I just wish there were more shrimp on the plate. I chose fried okra as my side, which was a good choice. You could tell the okra was fresh and not frozen. We had the fried catfish and a couple other sides like red beans and rice, a corn/ham thing which you have to get, all of which were some of the best I have had in a long time. The portion sizes were a little on the small side and my meal left me hungry afterwards. Luckily we had ordered reinforcements so it was not a problem. They had an extensive menu, all the standard fried stuff, po' boys, and even muffalettas, which we opted not to get this time around. We definitely plan on coming back to try all the rest. read more

I go to Cypress Grill not for the love of the food, but for atmosphere and a slice of red velvet heaven. We've gone several times after recieving a card in the mail that offered buy one get one free entree. Its a good place to chill and they have a small open patio thats also great to hang out eat some food and have a drink. The waiters are all very nice and helpful when ordering and will even tell you what not to get. I suggest sticking to the Cajun food, I've tried other things and wasn't too impressed. Fantastic value! They always have special deals, and send out regular discount emails. Wouldn't matter much if the food wasn't good, though. Thankfully, they've got some excellent creole/cajun -- probably the best crawfish etouffee I've ever had, even in New Orleans. They also have more simple, clean fish entrees to balance things out, and they're good, too, but sometimes a bit dry. Desserts are outstanding: the berry cobbler is delicious, and the bread pudding with bourbon is addictive. Will be trying out their weekend brunch soon! read more

Gumbo, bland! And who ever heard of not serving a baguette with the meal. That was the wife's meal, I had NOLA BBQ Shrimp. Served lukewarm in a weird broth, not really a roux, just warm brown water with lemon slices and onions. This came with a sub roll cut in half, must have been out of real french bread. The only redeeming thing about this experience was the cost, glad I didn't pay much for this. I looked around and almost all the other diners were eating fried shrimp and fried catfish. Went there tonight with my roomate. He wanted to eat and I wanted a beer, so he said we should go there. We told the hostess we wanted to sit at the bar, but there wasn't room, so we took a table next to the bar. After a short time, i realized why there was no room at the bar. It was all the employees sitting there! Really??? After you get off, go home or to another place! By the time we left, there were 6 employess drinking at the bar. (I took a picture to prove this in case someone doubts my word). I've eaten there before, and the food was ok, but I can definitely cook better cajun food at home. This is our "neighbourhood restaurant". If I only got to go to 10 restaurants in Austin, Cypress Grill would be on the list. Great food, great service, great prices. Be sure to sign up for their loyalty program. You get great coupons frequently making the bill even more fantastic. Favourite items: trout, fried shrimp, the vegetable of the day especially when it is green beans with garlic, brussel sprouts or black eyed peas. Oh yes, they also have the best cosmopolitan in town. I have been there before few times and is usually OK. It was my bday dinner with my teenage son and I wanted some type of fish/seafood/cajun. However, was very disappointed with the portions, food temperature was not hot, jambalaya was Very thick and pasty, and overall just disappointed. My 4 1/2 yr-old knows the Cypress Grill as the " place with the good broccoli" - he always orders the kids menu burger with broccoli! And doesn't even miss the fries! Yeah for good eating habits! Seriously, the Broccoli is good, but the GREENS are AWESOME ! Be sure to have some. My family loves Cypress Grill, and most importantly, the staff love my rowdy boy! Sometimes he sits at the bar and compares toys with the bartender and he always leaves with a Mardegras necklace and a smile. Besides that - Cypress is a friendly neighborhood eatery and bar, serving decent sometimes really good food! But no draft beer. Beside the great veggies, the etouffee is good, as is the mushroom, jalapeno, cheeseburger ( I get it our whole wheat toast). Its been hit and miss with the pricier fish meals, but they have always comped us if the meal wasn't right. My spouse and I have been regulars at Cypress Grill for years now, and we have always enjoyed the food. When it comes to the flavors of New Orleans, they have it down. For this reason alone they get 3 stars. It's too bad the service there has been on the decline and super inconsistent lately. Despite this, we have continued to dine there in hopes we would have a better experience upon our return. We recently went there for brunch and I ordered the migas, which normally have jalapenos diced into them. The cook didn't put them into the migas. When I pointed it out to the waitress and asked for jalapenos, she gave attitude and argued that they were in there. When I told her there were none, she sent over sliced jalapenos on a plate, but CHARGED me for them. Yes, I was charged EXTRA money for jalapenos that were SUPPOSED to be included in my migas! Jalapeno flavor is not something you miss in a dish... I let it go, as I didn't feel like having someone argue with me again. It was however, very tacky to punish me, the customer for not getting a part of my meal to begin with. Our last experience was HORRIBLE, thanks to Rachael, the waitress assigned to our table. 1. From the moment she approached us, we were received with a bad attitude. The restaurant was not super noisy and she felt the need to raise her voice at us when taking our order, but she was cheery and respectful towards the table of people next to us and didn't raise her voice at them. Hearing her dialogue with them versus how she spoke to us was as if 2 different people were waiting on the tables. They received stellar service while we were treated like unwelcome guests. This was truly puzzling to us. 2. We never received our appetizer as we patiently waited for it. However, we noticed the table next to us (who came in after us) received their appetizer. When the other server came out with our entrees, we asked him about our appetizer and he sent Rachael to our table. All we got was a "Oh, I'm,sorry" and she did not do ANYTHING to remedy the situation. NOTHING at all. At that point, she should have offered to put the appetizer order in or offer another solution, but we didn't get that courtesy or respect. And, by the way, she never wrote our order down to begin with... 3. While we sat unattended, she checked on the table next to us multiple times and gave her all to them as if we did not exist...This occurred even after she messed up our order. BEYOND RUDE. All of the above was enough to make us not interested in going back to dine anytime soon. Cypress WAS always in the top running for us when choosing to dine out. Although we enjoy the food, the stress of eating in that rude environment is enough to keep us away. To have good food is not enough. It is about delivering the entire experience. All patrons should be treated with the same respect and with good customer service. read more

Cajun food is one of my absolute favorites. With a name like Landry, I consider myself a pretty good judge. This place has some good Cajun food. I've only been once and had the shrimp PO Boy, kids catfish, salmon Greek salad and the skinny menu's shrimp. I guess in all fairness that's probably not the most "Cajun" but regardless, everything we had was really good. Our sever was also really good. She never let our drinks get empty and she was spot on with the order she brought out salads, entrees and to go order. (Oh yea, the Ceaser was good too). I'll be back for sure. I am from Louisiana and my girl friend enjoys cajun cuisine so we like to try new spots when we can. Unfortunately the last spot we tried was much better than this time. I ordered the BBQ Shrimp, which came with about 9 shrimp for 12.99, not a great value but when you include the side, and french bread it is ok. The flavor was good. My girlfriend had the seafood platter. VERY disappointing. It had one very small strip of catfish, about 3 small shrimp, and a small handful (childs hand) of fried crawfish bits and pieces. This was 14.99 but did include two sides, no bread though. It was as tasteless as it was expensive unfortunately. We also shared some garlic bread which was the cheap frozen kind you buy from a grocery store, which could have been a little toastier and tastier. I won't knock the service. The atmosphere was decent and the place is nice inside. Unfortunately for Cypress Grill there are just too many other tasty Louisiana themed restaurants in Austin. The last restaurant we visited was Evangeline which has rocking cajun food for reasonable prices. Cypress Grill: The best way to get and keep guests is to have great food and great service. But most importantly is the great food. If you got fresh shrimp and hand tossed them in your own batter and did the same with all of your seafood you would start getting a name for how good the stuff is. But with frozen replacements nothing is notable enough to want to come back. And don't skimp on a 15$ seafood platter. The pricing is reasonable for a PLATTER, but what we got was not. Every seafood restaurant I have ever had a platter of some type it is around the same amount and includes at least two pieces of fish and an ample amount of the other requested sides. read more

I've been here about 4-5 times. I live in the WC area so always looking for places near me. It is low key and tasty even if not the most calorie-conscious (you can do grilled fish and broccoli if you are counting). Their specials like half-off wine (mondays) and flip for dessert (sundays) make it fun. Last time I went with a friend and our server was Chuck. He was a really nice guy, good waiter and made the experience antithetical to the overrated hip restaurant one you can get downtown or eastside. I just tried cypress grill for the first time with my girlfriend trying to impress her with some good creole food however it heavily disappointed. We ordered the pork chops and gumbo seafood. Pork-chops were $15 and was incredibly tiny and rubbery. Sides of mash and corn were equally as disappointing . Its one of those strip mall places I tend to drive by with out a glance.the inside is pretty nondescript.just big enough that it didn't feel cramped. Pretty good food but terrible service yesterday. We were celebrating a birthday . 3 adults and one child were in our party. Waited over 45 minutes for 2 chicken fried steaks , a salad and a child's pancake bacon and French fries. I had asked to bring the child's plate when it was ready .. any portion of it would work . It didn't happen ahead of the rest of the meal. I was told if I had ordered a fruit cup they could bring that.. Nothing special to celebrate birthdays either , unless you are a rewards member. A child can get ice cream if you bring back their coloring menu.. but dessert and drinks are not included in their menu. Not really an important selling point, but again, could have been a nice way to apologize for the service . They obviously have it available . Super disappointed about how the management / waitress handled our party yesterday . There are way too many choices to enjoy a meal in Austin to have to be treated mediocre . Hostess and manager are idiots and do not treat minorities well. Went there for the crawfish on Mardi Gras with friends and was never called after 2 hours. Tried again yesterday and was told there wasn't a table for 3 available so we waited at the bar. A White couple with a kid came in 10 mins. later and was seated at a table meant for 2 by the hostess who put an extra chair at the table. I told the same Manager who worked Mardi Gras night and he said he was sorry. We will not be going back there, and I hope the owners fire them both. read more

A great local neighborhood eatery. Don't let the strip mall location fool you, this is good cajun food. The rattlesnake pasta is an interesting twist and it will make your scalp sweat in a good way. I've had this several times and sometimes it is hot, sometimes not so, but always good. The crawfish combo is excellent and my favorite on the menu. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if I could. Management is plugged in to their customers and has frequent coupons in South Austin local papers. The wait staff is always friendly.
