I came here for happy hour and the food was absolutely delicious. I ordered their oysters, shishito peppers, crab fingers, shrimp, poke tuna tacos, and lobster pasta. They all qualified for the happy hour except for the lobster pasta. Everything tasted amazing. I enjoyed the crab fingers the most because it was flavorful and left me wanting more. The oysters were so good as were the fried shrimp. The lobster pasta was also a highlight of my meal because it had chunks of lobster meat. The restaurant was surprisingly large. It doesn't look much from the outside but when you walk in, you immediately see how spacious the dining space is. There are large couches and tables. Staff is friendly and service is quick. Mongers had been on my list for a while, and I finally got to pop in for a quick lunch. My experience was a bit hit or miss. The tuna poke bowl ended up being a solid choice. I added an egg, and it made for a healthy, delicious, and satisfying lunch. My husband, however, ordered the gumbo, and that dish was unfortunately disappointing. It was watery, very salty, and came with barely any rice, so we ended up with a lot of salty stew left over. There also wasn't much crab or shrimp, and the seafood we did find was tough and overcooked. Based on other reviews, I can see why Mongers may still be worth another visit if you stick strictly to their seafood-focused dishes. But based on this experience, it felt a little too much like a gamble, so I'm not sure I'd personally rush back. read more

Austin doesn't have many great seafood restaurants so I'm so happy that this place exists!!! 4-5:30 is happy hour and my group basically ordered one of every app that was on HH. The buttered crab fingers were SO damn good we ordered another. The smoked trout dip was lovely. The shishitos were surprisingly spicy but I enjoyed that. The fried oyster slider was only fine, and I would probably skip that going forward (I think it's a Gulf oyster). But the raw East Coast oysters were delicious! Mains: i tried the lobster orrechiette ($46 on the day I was there) and one of the specials of the day, a pompano with kabocha and gailan. Both were great but I really especially loved the creamy lobster pasta. After a long week at work, it just really hit the spot. For dessert, we tried the pot du (chocolate) crème, the flourless chocolate torte, and the olive oil cake with blackberry sauce. My favorite was the pot du crème which was so smooth and decadent. The flourless chocolate torte felt a little lost under all the cream, and the olive oil cake was just a little too sweet for my tastes. But others in my group loved those ones. This place has been on my bucket list since it opened, but with a picky daughter who dislikes seafood, occasions for my wife and I to dine selfishly are few and far between. We finally made it, and it did not disappoint. I love restaurants with focus. Everything on the menu here serves to elevate the seafood ingredients. I ordered tuna crudo and an off-menu wreckfish (served with perfectly crisped Dutch baby potatoes) and both were superb. I only wish there were a broader selection of fish, but it's landlocked Austin, not NYC or Seattle, so I get it. Is there genius at work in the kitchen? Very attentive and knowledgeable. I had the gimlet which was super refreshing on a hot day. We shared a few apps including the fried shrimp, shishito peppers (which each one was randomly super super spicy), poke tacos (2 in an order, but you can add one more if needed), and the star of the show - butter crab fingers?! I never heard of this, but my guest was a big fan and suggested them. It is the really good part of the crab claw already cracked and opened up. You just dip in the butter and eat it. OMG amazing. They served them with little buttered croistinis too. So good. What a wonderful experience at Monger's last night for a birthday celebration. We all enjoyed our food and drinks. The service was great and the mood was the perfect blend of upscale and "neighbor gem". I can picture people coming here for a date night and sitting at the bar or coming with a bigger group and sitting at the table by the window, or like us, celebrating a birthday with a party of 4. We started off with the blue crab cake, which had generous portions of crab, and the shrimp, which my family thought was great. (I don't eat shrimp) We cleared the appetizer plates, to say the least. For our main dishes, we ordered the gumbo, fish & chips, sword fish, and fish tacos. My family loved their dishes! My fish and tacos were very crispy but lacked a little flavor so I asked for some more of the chipotle crema! For dessert, they had key lime meringue pie and a white cake with berry compote. We went to celebrate my mom's birthday. We made a reservation for early on a Friday evening so it wasn't too busy. We were seated quickly with the hostess bringing a bottle of water to the table. While a bit loud, the restaurant is a good size but with a cozy, coastal feel. We started by sharing the blue crab cake and buttermilk shrimp. I had a small but flavorful bite of the crab cake but I had didn't seem to have any big pieces of crab. My daughter had the opposite experience, getting a big piece of crab but not a lot of flavor. We both enjoyed it, just noted the difference between experience. The buttermilk shrimp was delicious. While served with some celeriac slaw, they are separated on the plate so the shrimp doesn't get soggy. For my main course, I chose the swordfish. The fish was firm and well-seasoned. The burst tomatoes and grit cake added flavor levels. I substituted fingerling potatoes for the roasted carrots. It liked the substitution but won't critique since it's not part of the dish. For dessert we got the olive oil cake with a salted berry compote and the Keylime pie tart. Admittedly the Keylime pie tart was everyone's favorite. It was well balanced between sweet and tart. Very refreshing. The olive oil oil cake with a very compost was good considerably less sweet and if you haven't had olive oil cake before the berry compound cut through that richness a good amount. But olive oil cake isn't to everybody's liking. Overall, we enjoyed our experience and I would suggest checking them out and seeing what fresh seafood they have on the menu. read more

3.5 stars! Mongers came as a recommendation and we thought we'd give it a shot. We had no reservations when we walked in but the FOH was able to get us a seat at the bar. Ambiance: Mongers' interior feels like a moody speakeasy, if it weren't for the large flat screen TVs showing sports and the fact that it smelled like if a wet fish market and an old wooden cabin that has been abandoned for exactly 25 years had a baby. Service: The bartenders were friendly but swamped. They were fantastic and did their absolute best however, and they were definitely what made our overall experience better. Food & Drinks: * 6 pieces of oyster - These were alright. Nothing stood out and while it didn't taste very fresh, it didn't taste old either. I do wish we were told as to what types of oysters we were served. Instead, we were just told that the oysters were paired and each 2 oysters were different types. We generally prefer going to Salt Traders if we have a hankering for oysters and after going to Mongers, Salt Traders has established itself as a better seafood restaurant, from our perspective. * Seasonal soft shell crab with Thai basil sauce - This was delicious. The crab was perfectly fried and the sauce was well-balanced. I did wish we had more sauce but, overall, this was a great dish. * Cioppino - My husband always gets cioppino at Salt Traders so it felt right that he ordered the cioppino at Mongers as well. They are very close in ranking but Salt Traders still wins this one as their cioppino has deeper & more layered flavors. * Swordfish - The cheddar poblano grit cake was exceptional and was easily the star of this dish. It paired really well with the perfectly cooked swordfish. * Whiskey sour - Delicious but the alcohol was weak. The bartender did ask me if I had a preferred whiskey but it feels like maybe he heard me say I didn't want any whiskey in my whiskey sour because the whiskey was nowhere to be tasted. My partner got a glass of chimay beer. Final thoughts: Personally, while Mongers was good, it just pales in comparison to Salt Traders in my humble opinion. Salt Traders' ambiance is cleaner, the food is just better and to top it all off, it's also a tad bit less costly. We likely would never go back to Mongers unless our car broke down, we're hungry and all the other restaurants in a 2 mile radius are closed. read more

It's so crazy how there are so many gems in Austin I still haven't discovered. I came to Mongers with my friends, and they'd been before so they had tons of good things to say. Service is awesome, and the restaurant is very vibey. It's perfect for a date night or a small gathering like the one we were having. We ordered a delicious bottle of wine and some oysters to share. The uni + tuna crudo was delicious, and I could've eaten maybe 10 pieces of just that alone. I adored my lobster risotto, which was one of the specials. Mongers is an upscale seafood place with a very small regular menu. Small is good here. It means that they do the same dishes over and over again bringing them to a high state of perfection. We attended a Feast of Fishes which were seven dishes that are NOT on the regular rotations. Since these were experimental offerings, the results were more varied. But what was good was absolutely positively spectacular. The wine cellar and the sommelier work are particularly distinguished. The wine drinkers at the table were drinking different items by the glass. Everyone was ecstatic with their glasses. Before I start effusing high praises, let me squawk about the dish that nearly everyone except the Brazilians and Portuguese get wrong. Bolinhos de bacalhao (called bacala on the Mongers Menu) These are fried fish balls. They are insane when the Portuguese speakers do them. Everyone else makes a wreck of them - including because they are new to the dish ... Mongers. Bacalhao is expensive dull fish. It is usually one of the most expensive dishes on the menu - so everyone thinks this is going to be good. Almost always it is not because bacalhao does not taste like much. It costs a lot because the slabs are big so you get a lot of fish for your fish. One of the Brazilian tricks is to make your bolinhos small - the smaller the better. Want to have a generous serving? Serve a whole basket of these mini-balls - none of them bigger than a tater tot. Tasty deep fried crust nearly always tastes better than the codfish itself. The bigger the ball, the higher the ratio of tasteless to tasty. Americans want to go big. So do upscale restaurants who want to have a dramatic looking dish that they can plate artistically with swirls on top. This virtually guarantees a tasteless ball. Mongers fell right into the trap. * * * But then after that it was one spectacular taste sensation after another. Five courses of pure decadence? Sign me up! Insanely good head on shrimp. Linguine in a clam sauce to die for. I wish I had bread or a spoon because I was trying to soak up every molecule of the sauce that was on my plate. I left way way too many molecules. A good wine-y cioppino. Most cioppino including my own is tomato based. This has tomato too. But there was a very very good red wine in there too that changed just about everything. A cioppino that was serious food for thought. A suave limoncello sorbetto. (Suave and limoncello rarely appear in the same sentence.) First rate cannoli. (which really needed a fork and knife but was totally divine after you somehow wangled it into your mouth.) I am willing to work to get my divine. Actually GOOD biscotti. (Good and biscotti rarely appear together in any sentence that I would write.) * * * That said, I think the way to play Monger's is to do the regular menu. The regular dishes look fine and the wine cellar is good. There is much to explore here. read more

Our server was Molly W. She was on top of her game. Always attentive to our table. Offered excellent advise on the meals and was spot on in every case. The food was awesome. There was three of us at the lunch hour, so we got the opportunity to try different things and each was superb. Crab & Shrimp Gumbo is excellent. It was plentiful with shrimp and was tasty. Scallops although a dinner item were provided to us on a bed of spinach. They were seared and tasted great. Good presentation. We had been trying several local places for scallops and this one was a clear winner. Lobster Roll was delicious. It tasted so fresh, as I closed my eyes, I could imagine myself off the coast of Maine eating on a fresh Lobster Roll. Linguine with mussels and chorizo. What a combination. Exquisite. Do not get an 8:30 or later reservation, the restaurant will be buzzing with clean up around you, NOT by your waitress who was especially gifted in recommendations and service. Restaurant should never offer can't a 8:30 reservation , and have other servers, not my sever, come and try to take my almost full plate away. Prior to that, was a delicious meal of Tuna, Oysters and drinks only to be spoiled by the constant movement around us. I looked at the time because I thought it was later, it was only 9:03. Our server apologized profusely and told us to take our time but the constant looks from the bar area made us feel unwelcome. It was my first time there, so aside from my perusing reviews, had no idea of how it would be. But was excited to try it. They did NOT disappoint. First, the auntie I was lunching with has a lot of food restrictions. She called ahead and made sure the chef could accommodate her. Yes. Yes they could and yes they did. My auntie and I had the same thing - fish tacos. Mine was straight from the menu and SO GOOD. The fish was fresh and batter fried perfectly. All of the flavors were well balanced. A little heat - but not too much, a little pickle, but not too much, crunch and chew textures were just right. My auntie asked for her fish to be steamed - and they did, without hesitation. Both of us devoured our plates. The waitstaff were superb. Attentive, but not too much. Very friendly. The place is small and elegant inside. It feels kind of swanky, but in the best way. Oh and I don't know if it's the same when it's really busy, but I really liked that I could have an actual conversation without yelling. I'm writing this review because Mongers deserves as much praise as a restaurant can get. But also, it was Saturday afternoon, and there was only one other table filled. Love this hidden gem. It is very close to where we live. We go here for special occasions: birthdays, anniversaries, end-of-school-years, or what not. I love seafood and the food here is great and fresh. The beet salad is a repeat order. In the most recent visit, I had the scallops over ravioli. The scallops were cook perfectly. They were seasoned a bit on the salty side but the rest of the dish, the kabocha puree, has a little bit of sweetness in it. At the end, the whole dish works great. We'll be back! read more

When we walked in, my husband asked what it used to be. I couldn't come up with it off the top of my head. Then, mid-meal, I remembered it was a wine place that we often visited in our younger days. Overall, it was a decent meal. Our waitress was not that friendly, but that was okay. She did her job well. My father enjoyed his entree, and that is what is essential. We celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at Mongers last night. We tried six different items on the menu. All were perfectly cooked, tasted exquisite, and were beautifully presented. We tried both of the soups on the menu. Of the two, we liked the Seafood Chowder best. The other choice was a Crab and Shrimp Gumbo. Generous different kinds of seafood in each dish. We also had the Blue Crab Cake and Burrata dishes. The latter did not have tomatoes with the cheese, which it is traditionally paired with, instead arugula and a fig marmalade accompanied it. The crab cake was stuffed with crab and very little filler (which is the mark of a good cake). Served with a smoked tomato aioli. Finally, we sampled the daily crudo (tuna) and daily ceviche (scallops). They were the stars of the meal. Both so delicate and presented wonderfully, but also they tasted the best.
