Seeking a place on my way home from Kenosha Pass to quiet my grumbling tummy, I happened upon Cutthroat Cafe. Let me tell you - it was delicious! SPACE/ATMOSPHERE: Cutthroat Cafe is the epitome of the mountain diner. Signs everywhere proclaim that, "life is better when you're fishing." After all, the place is named after a type of fish - so it's to be expected. When you first walk in there's light colored wood everywhere that emulates the look of a cabin. The dinning area is a bit more simple - with wooden chairs and tables. There's a great patio out back, but it was a bit chilly the day of my visit; so I opted to stay inside. Did I mention the building is painted a bright blue and orange? Well it is Broncos territory - so are you surprised that it would be? Me neither. SERVICE: When you walk in its a bit confusing if you need to wait to be seated or grab a seat on your own. After checking real quick with one of the servers bustling around behind the counter, I grabbed a seat at a small table. My server was with me quickly to take my order. My meal was out to me somewhat quickly - no longer than I expected. They do bring you your check with you meal and you pay as you leave. This is not a practice I'm a fan of. Only because I feel that servers don't check back with you after bringing out your meal. Oh well. EATS: After browsing the menu I decided that the breakfast burrito was calling my name. After all - I do love breakfast burritos! My burrito was quite tasty - packed full of eggs, cheese, hash browns, and your choice of meat. Loved that it came smothered in their nice thick green chile. An okay restaurant. Definitely a mountain restaurant feel. The food wasn't all that great and the process of ordering was confusing and a little weird. We were then told where to sit which they told us something like F7 and we had no idea where that was. We looked pretty stupid walking around looking for an F7 until we asked them where it was. Driving from Denver to Creede on the scenic highway 285 route makes this stop a must! It's a cute, quaint little restaurant that has about 15 tables. They also had a lovely outdoor patio. We happened upon this locale on a Wednesday morning at 11am when the Harley riders were finishing up their breakfast stop. I ordered the Fish and Chips. It is served with two nice pieces of fried cod and a healthy portion of french fries. My husband ordered the Long Horn burger. The burger comes open face and smothered in their famous red and green chili and topped with raw onions and cheese! Deelish! They serve a plethora of menu items! The waitress gave us the favorite items ordered and offered an option for substitutions. We think the owner sits at the end of the bar near the kitchen and kept a keen eye on us! Noticed the mixed reviews but we had a good experience lunching at the Cutthroat Cafe in Bailey a couple of days after Christmas. We arrived early afternoon and 2 - 3 other dining parties were finishing. We were promptly seated in the quaint restaurant and the waitress sat at our table to greet us and take our drink order. Perhaps a 10 minute wait and our food came out fresh and hot. The table enjoyed a green chili burger (green chili was great!) as well as baked steak and chicken fried steak. Portions were generous, food was prepared fresh to order and all was delicious. Staff was friendly and shared a great mountain vibe. Have driven by this place many times before - happy to have had the opportunity to stop and enjoy. read more

BEWARE - I'm pretty sure all the 5 star reviews are written by friends/family, because they give a very inaccurate view of the experience you can expect here. To set the scene, we visited at 10:50am, waited 30 minutes to be seated, and waited another 45 minutes after ordering before our food came out. Despite being a 40 degree October day, the place was infested with flies - literally more than 50 flies. I understand that flies can be unavoidable at times - 1 or 2 flies might be understandable in the dead of summer, but alas: it seems that flies breed and thrive here. I even watched a patron at the bar tell the waitress that there were too many flies, and the waitress (a mom-aged woman) responded by handing him a flyswatter - literally passing it to him over his plate as he ate his eggs. He looked mortified, and I felt uncomfortable even witnessing it. Besides this major misstep, the rest of the staff seemed to be doing their jobs normally. Based on my experience, the issues with the restaurant are not rooted in the youth-staff... despite complaints by other patrons about the teenage waitresses and bussers. Fast forward to the food: overpriced and awful. The chicken fried steak tastes like squished hamburger meat with yarn weaved throughout. The biscuits and gravy turned my stomach - biscuits were somewhat raw and tasted like bisquick. Potatoes were fine. Eggs were actually cooked pretty well, but were overshadowed by the rest of the experience. One of my friends left describing the meal as the "worst breakfast I ever had". I have been coming here for years when we camp at Buffalo Creek. The food is decent. It is a small place so it is loud. After reading some of the reviews though I will not return. The owner screaming is political views, young women being yelled at in front of customers, and poor food quality are the reasons I will spend my money elsewhere. No employee should be yelled at and especially in front of customers. I do not care what anyone else's political views are and I especially do not go to a restaurant to hear someone screaming about their beliefs. We did a carry out order. The food was fine. Typical home cooking. The chopped sirloin was especially good. The chicken strips tasted fresh. The mashed potatoes and fries were good too. Veggies were canned but fine. My only real issue was picking up the order it just didn't feel very clean inside. No masks or gloves by the staff. Tables we're un bussed and even clear tables just didn't look very clean. We were visiting in the area but if I lived here I'd do carry out but not sure I'd eat in. read more

Waited for 35 minutes for two regular burritos to-go after being told they'd take about 10 minutes. Then we watched them give our order to the wrong person. He left with it and came back 10 minutes later. Then they tried to give us that food that another customer had already handled. When we refused to take the old food they were visibly annoyed. The new burritos came basically open-faced. They had asked if we wanted them handheld. We said yes, and for some reason, one came in a styrofoam container with cheese sprinkled on it. Ends weren't tucked in; tortilla was barely overlapping. Very loosely thrown together. Both burritos needed to be eaten with forks, and were mids, at best. Would not recommend. Will Not try again. Service was a 0/10. Food would've been a 4/10 if the burritos were actually wrapped... seems like they're friendly to locals and probably anyone in a uniform, but everyone else is a nuisance. Food was bad and service terrible. On top of that, there were upcharges on the bill that caught us completely by surprise. I ordered poached eggs only to learn when the waitress delivered the food, that their cook cannot poach eggs--did not even try. You would think that she could have mentioned that when she took my order. The potatoes were soaked in grease (as were the eggs) and the toast had some kind of funky tasting spread on it. This is such a small town gem! My boyfriend and I got stuck in Bailey after a night trying to drive back to Denver in a snowstorm, and we were so happy we did! On our way out of town in the morning we decided to stop by Cutthroat to grab a bite to eat before we hit the road. We both ordered coffee and I got pancakes with a side of bacon and hash browns. My husband grew up in Bailey so when we moved back to the area - we knew this would be a favorite of ours (as it's always been for him)! It's definitely a locals spot... and for good reason! I know there's been some complaints on here about service and things of the sort but for those of you who don't realize... Chip doesn't have a liquor license. The reason being... he wants to be able to hire high school kids to give them experience! We all know the big world out there and how much everyone wants experience... and here is a business who is trying to give it to kids... so give them a break! Yes, it's busy. My girlfriend and I got stuck in Bailey durning an awful snow storm. In the morning Scott from the Bailey Lodge told us to checkout Cutthroat for breakfast cause it's the "locals spot". Great call. Ambiance - I love these local breakfast spots. Nice decor, colorful little building it just had good vibes all over. Food- great eggs and I love their hash browns. Very yummy and good portion size. Price - very reasonable prices and I left stuffed. Service - Awesome server, very friendly and happy to be there. I loved the energy. Any time I wanted more coffee, they came around. All my weird special requests, they smiled at. Very happy! Coffee- this was really good coffee and I'm picky. I won't go to Starbucks and I drink my coffee black. They have great coffee! This is a friendly, community place. My husband's sandwich was pretty good. I ordered a BLT or BLAT. It was by far the worst BLT ever. A few small pieces of bacon (not strips--small pieces), what looked like a leftover piece of lettuce, and barely toasted bread that was supposed to have been sourdough but didn't seem to be. It was so disappointing. My husband let me share his sandwich because mine was inedible. I hope this was an anomaly, but at any rate, I thought any cook/chef that allowed this plate to leave the kitchen had absolutely no pride in their work. The locals seem to love the place. When we see the man that cooked our food walking through the restaurant unmasked to use the bathroom we couldn't get out of there fast enough. Our daughter sat on the floor by our table for no more than a few minutes and her hands a pants were covered in dirt!!!! The food was ok but after the floor dirt and finally finding the unmasked cooks beard hair in our food we were done!!! We paid and still tip the young waitress who was clearly in training!!! They also started letting other customers inside to order who had no mask on. It mad us feel unsafe and sham on you guys in a time like this. It's COVID people!!!!! This is the cutest little cafe, with friendly service. The food was scrumptious and exactly what we were expecting from a sweet little diner. I went with my family and my brothers family, there were eight of us total and we were seated quickly and all the food came out fresh and delicious! Almost everyone's plate were empty when we left. The place was hopping with locals for a Thursday morning/early afternoon. I love places where locals go. We will definitely be going back when we visit my niece. Less than mediocre. We went for dinner on a Saturday night. We ordederd the 1/2 pound (8oz) grilled choice steak and they served me a 2 oz steak, without saying anything. I had to wait until the server was done with her rounds to ask her where the other 6oz. of steak was at? They finally made another small steak to help make up for their mistake. We stopped by here pretty close to closing after hours of snow driving with a couple grumpy little kids, and it was a lifesaver.
