Still good. Stopped in on our way home from our cabin last weekend and were not disappointed. The burgers were still flavorful and juicy, the cheese was melted to perfection, and the fries (while the portions seemed significantly smaller than last year) were still perfection. It was very pleasant sitting in their field, watching the traffic pass on 285. Since it was too hot to have anyone stay in the car, we had our pup and kitty (both leashed) in the shade of our picnic table. The only thing that would be nice is if they added umbrellas yo the tables- the table tops and benches were sooooo hot baking in the sun. read more

We wanted to like the Hungry Moose Caboose so much but we were disappointed. The burger was greasy with little flavor. The BLT was greasy but with some flavor. The undercooked fried were also greasy. We have never had such greasy fries, burgers, or BLTs. We will try them again sometime but based on the great reviews, we are very disappointed. Greasy tiny burgers at Ritz-Carlton prices at Hungry Moose Caboose. The owner (the guy with a nose ring and bad attitude who yells at customers) pretends to be "a chef." He isn't. Warming up frozen patties doesn't qualify as one. There is no service; the dude has attitude but no gratitude (only collecting undeserved gratuities). The place is dirty and under the burning sun, in the middle of July. There are no umbrellas or even a hint of shade. Dust everywhere and occasional dirty napkins under the tables. The "Moose" is still very hungry and probably sick to its stomach. Skip it. read more

Finished a day hike on the Colorado Trail, and stopped here on a Sunday afternoon. Quick and friendly service! Good prices and excited to see locally owned beef being served. As a current Kansas native this made my heart happy! Burger and fries hit the spot! Will definitely be back. read more

This is an unassuming little restaurant located on the side of Highway 285 in Jefferson, CO. We stopped as we were starving and were pleasantly surprised to find a wonderful gem. The restaurant has loads of outdoor seating and is dog/kid friendly. There are also inside tables in case it is a bit too hot or cold outside. Menu is mainly classic American items such as Hot dogs, Hamburgers, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Salads, etc. They have a full bar. There is also a little ice cream window, bathrooms were clean. The food was tasty, and the staff friendly. Food came in a reasonable time (25 minutes for 2 Grilled Chicken Sandwich). If I ever find myself on 285 with some hunger I will definitely hold out for Hungry Moose Caboose. read more

Great roadside burger joint on the side of US285. Cozy atmosphere and high quality (but not high falutin') burgers, dogs, fries, and shakes. CASH ONLY. Seating is very cute and cozy. Biggest drawback is restrooms are 25¢ per visit and are pit toilets! Otherwise a top notch joint worth a stop. read more

Spent the weekend in the Lost Park area and we were in need of a good meal. We came through Jefferson hoping for a large choice of eateries, but only saw this place and the gas station/kitchen across the street. We chose wisely. I had a hamburger fries and coke. The burger was amazing, and the fries were extra salty and crispy, my favorite. My friends had burritos and gave them the thumbs up as well. The staff was friendly and talked with us for a bit while we waited for the food. Only complaint is the price, my fries, cheeseburger and coke came in at $11. You can obviously eat for less there if you want but had a bit of sticker shock there. read more

One thing the owner working on is getting in-house restrooms as of now restrooms are out side and coin operated, good thing is they give you free quarter. read more

The cheeseburger was fantastic. The meat was fresh as were all of the vegetables (lettuce, tomato, onions). The service was prompt, and very courteous. Not sure about why anyone would complain about a fresh $6.75 hamburger. One serving of fries was more than enough for my wife and I. The historical train station was a bonus. Headed to the Valley, we stopped at this little place. It's a little joint, you order at the little window, eat at either a picnic table or in your car and go. I had a burger and my FH had a pulled pork sandwhich. TO DIE FOR! Very tasteful and hearty! The fries are yummy too! They have condiments and knapkins on the tables and are pretty friendly. Regardless of the time of year, it's windy. Jefferson sits in a valley like setting and the wind blows all of the time. Hang on to your meal! read more

Bring a quarter..... We stopped to get ice cream....nothing at all spectacular about it in the least. Prices of other items on the menu seemed extremely high. And BRING A QUARTER if you need to use the restroom. They are, quite possibly, the last place in American that makes you pay to use the bathroom (and it's a campsite type bathroom to boot with no running water). Give me a break! I won't even slow down for this place the next time I'm traveling down 285. read more

We've lived here a year and they're never open. Went by last Sat evening for "the worlds best burger" and guess what, closed. It was several hours before their posted closing hours and their "open" sign was on. Parked across the street because of our trailer, walked over to eat and no one there. Wasted our time. This place is the Best!! After camping in Pike, we came down to get ice and stopped here!! The Burgers were HUGE and DELICIOUS! Almost as if I made them at home!! I ordered one right before they closed and I swear it was one of the best burgers I'd ever had. While I was waiting for a ride the owner asked me to wait inside even though they closed. We stopped here along the way to Telluride from Denver. The young guy who took our order was very friendly. We decided to take our order to go since we had such a far drive ahead of us we figured we'd save time eating in the car. After around 30 minutes of waiting for our food, we grabbed the bag and headed out. Around 20 miles into the drive we began eating and I noticed that 3 items that we ordered were missing (total: around $30 worth of food). We decided it was worth making a u-turn and driving back to the restaurant to get our order straightened out. The owner of the restaurant WAS SO RUDE when I told him the situation. He took my bag and threw all of my food away (some of the order was correct). He told me it was all my fault and I should have checked to make sure I had all my food before leaving the restaurant. He did give us a refund on the missing items, but how he handled everything was so unprofessional and I will never be returning to this place again. It's too bad because his wife seemed very friendly and was accommodating to us read more

We blasted through Jefferson today and we needed a treat. We've stopped in Jefferson before for a coffee or an ice cream cone on the east side of the street not realizing the place we needed to be was at 'the Moose'. Jefferson is just a blip on the highway so finding the Red Caboose will be impossible to miss. Drive up, order at the window, anchor yourself at a picnic table (as a previous reviewer pointed out - this is where the wind goes when it is done everywhere else) and jump up to the window when they call your name. It's the best! Today's treat were the malts. Yummy! We raved about them all the way back to town. P.S. I'm waiting to award the fifth star after we try the burgers. I was lucky enough to stumble upon this hidden gem this summer on the way to a camping trip. We pulled over for a pit stop and ended up spending a cpl hours here.
