I love this place! Coming from a Bajan family, I can attest to the thorough Bajanality of this restaurant. We've been going here for DECADES. Not sure if you can still eat in but it's worth it just for the take out. It's a hole in the wall type place that smacks of authentically Bajan from the accents to the delicious smells. Give me Bajan food everyday! I grew up on this food so I am ecstatic one is in my neighborhood. Bajan food is slept on and Culpepper is here to awaken it. This is a must try and watch how you come back for more. They had jam puffs, salt bread and the star: cou cou. Seasoning was on point, flavor on point and food aesthetic on point. Short Review: Get the COU COU w/ stewed fish, vegetable or chicken. Place looks run down but the food is the best Bajan food consistently for decades!!! No parking nearest train station Sterling Place on the 2 train Longer review: I cannot believe I haven't reviewed this spot I have had their food for over 2 decades. But after actually going to Barbados to have the authentic food I just had to do this now. A lot of this menu is actually hard to find in Barbados considered antiquated by the younger locals. "Youth is waisted on the young". Considered to be more like home cooking. Such a real shame. I was able to find some cou cou at a ridiculously expensive restaurant as an appetizer which contained a small square(!!!!) of cou cou. All this to say we are blessed to have this delicious bajan food in abundance here. What to get? The Cou Cou! It is a cornmeal staple that comes with stewed something. You pick the something: fish, chicken, beef, veggies, etc. I prefer breadfruit cou cou it is almost never available and I do not know anyone else who does prefer it. Sides are okay. Somethings to try would be Conkies, Paime( think a sweet pasteles made with corn flour), macaroni pie, cassava pone( heavy and very sweet). Not a fan of their Cheese Cutters(Sandwiches with block cheese) get the King Fish Cutter if you do get one. Here is the downside: Call ahead: very popular & sell out of things quickly, This is not really an eat-in spot. There are chairs by the window. I love their oxtails, flying fish, and rice. One of the best Caribbean restaurants in the area (I prefer it over the famous Gloria's). They serve Bajan (Barbadian) food. The flying fish is their national dish but so far I've only been able to try it once since I come at night and they're usually out by then. Portion size of the meat is decent for one meal but small compared to the amount of rice. I usually end up saving the leftover rice for the next day. More meat would be nice. Customer service can be better. The older woman is rude but the younger one is nice. They both work on the slow side so there's usually a long wait if there are 2 people ahead of you. The ambiance of Culpeppers is very welcoming. I feel as if I am walking into more than a bakery and restaurant. I feel as if I'm walking into a a establishment that is very Caribbean. The two women always are courteous and patient. They always are watching the pot and very skillful. The dish I had was Pigeon peas and white rice. The side a side of mixed vegetables with cabbage. Each time we make a trip from Long Island into Brooklyn this restaurant is a must. Was In Brooklyn yesterday and made our normal stop again and boy were we disappointed. A few months ago they left a meal completely out of the bag but we got over that and our thought was to support black business and couldn't wait to have a delicious Caribbean meal. The baked chicken was unrecognizable. There was nothing you could do to doctor it up. The fish cakes we just as dry as the chicken. Both went straight to the garbage. Cou cou was just ok and Mac pie was done well. Why would a restaurant serve food that clearly had been sitting around for some time? If we ever go back it will be a long time from now. Before jumping in here, I want to address the comments made here about the place being racist. I went here and had no problems being white. Actually the lady behind the counter was quite nice to me, even though I came in right at closing time. They also weren't slow even though the chicken was cooked to order. This isn't some polished little yogurt place in Manhattan guys. This is a Caribbean joint in Lefferts Gardens/Crown Heights. Get with it and set your expectations appropriately. Don't expect a fucking welcome mat regardless of your race. I got this as a quick dinner on a Sunday night. After heading around the corner home, I dug right in. My main question was where was the spice? I understand this is a Bajan place which can skew less spicy, but come on. Add some more sauce to the bird at least! The chicken itself was moist and tasty along with the little sauce I did get. Rice and peas, veggies and plantains were all good. This hit the spot at the time but definitely wasn't as great as it could've been. I'll probably come here again given how close it is to my apartment, but overall you can much do better for jerk chicken in the neighborhood. One of the best places to get Bajan food in Brooklyn. My mom is from Barbados, and she and I usually make it a point to drive out from Long Island because the food is that good! I am truly disappointed. I purchased $52.00 dollars in food from Culpeppers through Seamless. When my food arrived I was missing an order of Cou Cou and Cod fish . When I called to let them know that my order of Cou- Cou and salt fish was missing I was told to call Seamless and get a refund for the missing order. Terrible customer service. They forgot to put my order in the bag and it's like it's not a big deal to them . What they should have done was to apologize to me for being careless, call seamless and send my order of food that they forgot to send. No worries, just know that I will never order from them again. This place was worth the 1+ hour trip from Manhattan. The servers were terrific, taking the time to explain each dish. We had the goat and oxtail roti. Except for a SLIGHT dryness (cudda used more sauce with the meat) the food was great. The roti was almost as big as my head. And the meat was prepared perfectly. I don't even know how they attained a 3.5 rating! The worst customer service I've EVER come across. I am ashamed and embarrassed that they are apart of the West Indian community with their terrible attitude, no training whatsoever in customer service and not to mention, the food wasn't even good! I went there Saturday February 27th, 2021 to pick up the order I had already paid for. When I entered I greeted the staff who completely ignored me and when I went to sit by the order pick up area I was STILL unacknowledged. There had to have been about 4 or 5 employees working that day and each of them passed myself and another customer that was also waiting for her order. When she tried to get one of the employees attention she was waved off by the employee and that's when I'd had enough. I went to the front counter and gave them a piece of my mind while the WHOLE time my order had been ready and sitting on a shelf the entire time! Okay, this is my second attempt at trying to get something to eat from this place....so my one star rating is for customer service. Since this is my first time being here, I have no clue where to start...the only sign for direction says PAY HERE. Okay, so I assume that I'm supposed to order from the other end...? Well, there was a line, and the lady before me after about 5 minutes of chit chat with the lady behind the counter finally places her order. After that, I still don't get acknowledged, because that same lady is now fulfilling her order....so I left... The second attempt, which was today, I get there, and it was slow. Again, I'm still waiting for someone to take my order.... Finally, the lady asks me what I want, I give her my order (after two attempts because she interrupted me to assist another customer yet again), but she doesn't write anything down, ask me what sides I want, or give any direction on what to do next. After a few minutes, she reappears again and she is now taking a phone order (and this time she is writing it down). I gave up and left ...again. I'm really at a loss for words because the food is already prepared and sitting in a buffet style at the counter, so I don't know why she didn't just scoop up the food right then and there?!?! What am I missing?? My advice to the management is that they need to reevaluate their service operations and have some order in place where one is responsible for each task, taking the order, taking phone orders, fulfilling the order, and the cashier. I love it when stores offer hilarious combinations of completely divergent goods/services. My favorite one so far has been the Harlem store that sells both hair supplies and Christian gospel DVDs. Why yes! I did have all that time while I was getting my hair done, I'd love to get more Jesus in my life! But, I think Culpeppers may have even a better offer--get your West Indies food while getting your diploma framed. Seriously, where else are you going to go find that? Alright, so the framing is done by a guy who just asks that you contact him through the store owners, but the flyer advertising "Framing at Culpepper's" has always made me chuckle when I'm here ordering food (which I've done much of recently). And while I can't speak for his framing abilities, I can say with confidence that Culpeppers is a great little store with amazing West Indies food. Culpeppers is a tiny shop on Nostrand. I guess it changed locations since the last review, since the place has absolutely no seating. It's completely a take-out joint, which isn't too bad considering the fact that the place has no air conditioning (only two small fans) and it's always hotter than an armpit in there. Though the service is slow (expect a seven to a ten minute wait for food), the people there are super friendly. Not only are the people behind the counter sweet, always greeting me with a smile, the customers there are courteous and nice as well. I've always struck small conversation while waiting for the food, and people have gave me great tips on the neighborhood. And the food is good! Granted, I've only gotten two things from the menu, the goat roti and the oxtail roti, I can tell you that I've only had the two items because I'm so happy with them. The roti ($6.50 for one) is a one pound of meaty goodness. The roti (the wrap) itself is the perfect combination of chewy and crispy. Inside is the meat (deliciously cooked, though may not be the best quality) and the slight curry layer. The curry isn't very strong, but has enough flavor and compliments the meat very well. My only complaint would be that the rotis are difficult to eat because of the bones. Both the goat and oxtail roti come with bones and lots of them! And because the oxtail bones are larger, there's also less meat inside that roti. I'm a little sad that once I move out this weekend, I probably won't be able to have Culpeppers again. Or.. I know nothing about authenticity, I know nothing about the dine-in experience or if they do delivery, but this is magically good takeout that does not make you feel bad even if you eat too much. Both oxtail stew and curry goat melt perfectly into the moist rice and their veg and plantains seal the deal. Chicken roti is also solid. That takes a minute, play a game on your phone and watch two old guys try to bully each other into (or out of idk) buying sweets from the pastry case. Counter service has been great, and when I looked it up after my first time here, I was surprised to learn I had been patiently served with a smile by the owner. The staff was super friendly and patient; I had forgotten what he wanted for lunch and she was very pleasant. The food was outstanding I enjoyed the Oxtail and Stew Chicken.
