Cucchillo is a very hip spot with awesome ambience. It's not in the prettiest part of Vancouver but I felt safe when I was inside. Ambience is nice and the host ans water were super sweet and attentive. The food was decent but I thought the sable fish was a little too rich. Spicy margaritas are top notch I can drink Al night. The lines are fresh and there are no mixes. I would come back to try other dishes. read more

I can't wait to come back here to try more dishes! Everything we tried was packed with layers of flavours to be discovered in your mouth! Textures, colors and flavours all on point! The bean dip was a delightful surprise , I wish I hadn't pigged out on it because I needed more room in my stomach to enjoy all the following dishes. Ambience was great too! This place Exceeded my expectations! I'll be back very soon! read more

This was one of the places I wanted to visit for Dine Out 2019, since I'd been eyeing it for a while. Their menu was a four-course set, and most of the food was neatly divided into two on each plate, so I was able to easily split things with my dining buddy. First came a seafood entree, and I'll have to say that this was weak. I had a tuna "poké" with quinoa, though it was so small I'd barely call it that, and the flavours were very bland. My friend had a ceviche that was just... lame. It was long strips of salmon mixed with greens, and barely a hint of acid. I fell in love with ceviche eating it in Peru where they serve chunks of white fish drowned in citrus or passionfruit acid alongside tangy onions and bright herbs and creamy yams; Peruvian ceviche bursts with flavour and texture, but this felt limp and meagre, like somebody tried to West-Coastify ceviche by replacing all the good things with salmon and kale. It wasn't a great start. Luckily, I think the next two dishes made up for it. I had blue corn fried tacos with a papaya salsa, and those were excellent - the salsa was bright and fruity and zesty, and the chicken was meaty and crisp and not dried out at all. After that came the pork belly confit topped with mild chilies and a maple-tamarind glaze, which was excellently done and a really fun combination of flavours, though I wish they had been a bit bolder with the heat of the chili they chose. My menu ended up with what was basically a deconstructed cheesecake - a dollop of foamy cream cheese infused with ají amarillo, served alongside granola and half an aguaymanto. It was a nice combo, and the cream cheese was excellent, though it was a bit small. The ambiance was very nice overall, with a slightly faux-industrial feel and dim lighting, and staff were very friendly and prompt. Overall, I'd probably come here again, though the portions are a little small. And I would never order seafood from them. It doesn't seem to be their thing. read more

One of the sexiest places in Vancouver. Perfect for dates, weekend nights, all in all great vibe. If I were to base my review on my first experience around a year ago I'd give Cuchillo a 5 easily however based on my latest experience I'd give them a 4. More like 4.5 overall I guess. Maybe my expectations got too high! We started with a custom Mojito/Margarita that is awesome, ask the bartender to be surprised and you'll get it. Appies were avocados and chips that's nice. However the Yuca Frita that we ordered had a very strong smell and taste. It gave ma a headache honestly. For the mains Lamb Albongidas are awesome and the Prawn Ceviche was also great but we missed a chicken taco item that they had previously. It was a spicy sour and sweet chicken taco which the waitress said they have excluded from the menu. That and and the Frita are the reasons I'm giving them 4 stars. If they bring it back I'll bump them back up ;) Give Cuchillo a try. read more

Wife and I were looking for a short late night out and picked Cuchillo based on yelp ratings. It was about 10 pm and place was half full. Given the area, was pretty surprised there were that many in fact! We soon discovered an attentive waitress, great cocktails and a nice selection of food. The tuna ceviche, Ibérico stuffed peppers and sable fish dish were perfect for later evening eats and probably could have done one less since they were bigger than expected! Accompagnements for each dish were great Definitely would want to come back here looking to chill! read more

My favorite thing here is the pulled pork tacos and churros. Wonderful! If I remember correctly my bartender was Darren and he was a wonderful conversationalist. This is more of a hidden bar as there is no sign and no address. But it is the restaurant beside St. Laurent. I enjoyed the minimalistic decor and music. The ambience was good. I found the lamb taco heavy but passable. Try the guacamole. It is delicious! The house chorizo is also wonderful. This is a hidden gem read more

The neighborhood may not be so great, but the food here is amazing, the vibe is nice, and parking is ample. Note that there's no clear sign or number on the door - just look for the purple neon skull on the outside and you're there. :) Duck tacos: these were amazing. Tender, rich depth of warmth to its flavor... I'm not usually a huge fan of duck, but these definitely stood apart! Probably the best duck I've ever tasted! Mexican Sea Prawns: Truth be told, I ordered these because the pictures made them look so good, and I wasn't disappointed. They were even better in person! Prawns were tender, cooked perfectly and sat atop some nice greens and a corn cake of some kind. So delicious and surprisingly filling. Pork belly - I know many have reported these to be very sweet, but I actually didn't find them to be overly so. The meat had a perfect crispy side, succulent tender side, a good portion of meat and the sweet glaze went very well with it! Dulce de leche: I was full, but had to try the dessert since everything else had been so tasty. There's only one on the menu, which I thought was interesting, but it was really good. I liked how everything was served one by one. You could really savor and enjoy the flavors and dishes without mixing them too much. However, the downside to this is that I got full a lot quicker since I had time for my body to register it had eaten haha. Still so good though and considering the quality of food here, I'm surprised this place isn't more packed. Definitely worth a try! read more

Dine Out Vancouver 2021 is coming to a close, so a friend and I were looking for some new eats before it was over. We were looking for something near Gastown and by chance, we checked out Cuchillo - and I am so glad we did. Starting off with the restaurant itself - the ambience was relaxed, yet lively. The restaurant was dimly lit with a combination of hanging lights and candles, creating a laid-back atmosphere. The service was fantastic from the beginning to the end. The staff were very welcoming and the bartender we were seated by was very friendly. Despite the restaurant getting busier as the evening progressed, the staff weren't rushing us to get out so that's a nice bonus. For the food, my friend and I split the Dine Out Menu to taste as many dishes as we could, with an extra order of Blistered Shishito Peppers, and margaritas. The Dine Out menu had several courses: starting with the ceviche, to the tacos, entraditas (entree), and finally the postre (dessert). Each dish had great presentation and unique flavours that emphasized its ingredients, as well as complimenting each other - a subtle detail that Cuchillo delivers on. The highlight of the evening was the dessert - White Corn cheesecake with a habanero drizzle. I thoroughly enjoyed the combination of sweet and spicy flavours for this dessert, along with the softness of the whipped cheesecake. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture before I devoured it! While their Dine Out menu had great value for the price, their regular menu is a bit pricy. If you're looking for something a little extra to celebrate or something unique, I highly recommend Cuchillo for a great dining experience. According to the bartender, Cuchillo has a rotating menu so keep an eye out for some new and interesting dishes! read more

Do you like skulls? How about amazing drinks and food? Then this is the place for you! We first stopped by for a drink while waiting for another restaurants' table, but after trying their margaritas vowed to come back to make this place our next office happy hour spot. They were able to accommodate a large group (15-20 people) and we had the best time! Tacos were great and the tequila shots came with a green shooter- not sure what was in it but it was great! The tacos were unique and had a great blend of flavours. We will most definitely be back (once I find another no hangover cure‍). read more

Went for dinner last night and was so impressed with the service and quality of food. Not only did they accommodate the person with allergies on the table by excluding the problem ingredient, they changed the recipe to insure flavors were still the number one consideration. Saw this reviewed on the front page of yelp on May 15th and book marked it for future reference. Every single dish here was amazing as my date and I got a series of shared dishes among us. Cuchillo offers Latin cuisine in a cool casual space in Gastown. Here you will find a selection of ceviche, antojitos, chips and dip, tacos, and tapas. All are served tapas style so you can try a bunch of different dishes in one sitting! We arrived around 5:30pm which was during happy hour (discount off beer and margaritas). Tried the chips with guacamole, the skirt steak taco, rockfish taco, and pork belly taco. I highly recommend the pork belly and skirt steak taco which had a great combination of textures. The steak taco had tender steak paired with a crunchy polenta. Pork belly dish had the most tender meat, with the crunch from the plaintain. Had a good time here! read more

Really enjoyed our visit here! The food and flavours are very unique and the cocktails are well made. We waited about an hour for a seat at the bar on Friday night. They do offer to take your number down and call you as well. It's a tapas style restaurant with many long tables and a few booths and high tops. Sitting at the bar as a couple is really great. The bar staff were very friendly and knowledgable. They recommended some great eats. We had the trout ceviche. The marinade was delicious, although spicy! We also had the corn bread with spicy butter. The special tacos were crisp and rich and we finished off with the dulce de leche which was to die for! The menu has so many cool things on it. Looking forward to coming back and trying more items. read more

GREAT venue for a wedding reception, great food, efficient waiters...just came back from my nephew's evening party, and although I am bucking 80, had the best time dancing with the gang...reminded me of the 70s, although I only knew maybe five of the songs, the rest were perfect for dancing...almost everyone up on the dance floor downstairs....most fun since before COVID. We all had to be double vaccinated and the occasion was all extended family, so great fun. Thanks heaps. read more

My girlfriend and I have always been a fan of this place. We've eaten here for many years but we will no longer be coming back here ever again. The food has gone downhill, and the service is even worse. My girlfriend ordered a margarita and the server completely forgot, we were sat at 5 pm so there were no other customers in the restaurant at the time. By the time I had finished my beer, we asked about her margarita and the response was "I totally forgot!" - these things happen but you'd expect it not to happen every single time we are here. And there was no offer of the item taken off the bill, we were so annoyed we did not order anything else after our first drinks. We ordered the cornbread which barely had any seasoning, it was served with a chilie butter which was nice. Typically corn bread has a bit of a sweetness to it from the corn, but this just tasted like rye bread with a compound butter. The scotch eggs were the worst item, it was greasy, the egg was over cooked, and the ground meat was green for some reason. It had a pumpkin seed crust, pumpkin seeds in the meat mix as well as pumpkin seeds sprinkled on the plate. They must've been trying to get rid of pumpkin seeds! The Prawn Arepas were great, no complaints there. read more

On the edge of the edge of town, the feel of skulls are about... Its like I'm hanging out in a mystical bar deep in Panama or somewhere in South America.. Newly opened but you can feel the future ambiance here as this pad is going to hold fort with locals and most probably become the after hours hangout of the food service industry. Maple Chipotle Tamarino Glazed Pork Belly: If you want pure pork belly bliss come on down. This dish has the perfect spicy sweet combo and whoooa full of pure gooey belly flavours and stickiness. I also had my eye on the scallop plate which I was told tasted better than it it looked, and it looked or the Grilled Steak Tijuana baby caesar Chorizo Buttermilk Papas yum yum. Lordy Lordy Lordy, had a fantastic meal backed by extraordinary service (Ben, on his first day I may add) had tremendous knowledge of the menu, and did a fantastic job guiding us through various options! The food is great, a few misfires on flavors (or lack thereof) but overall a great experience. Not enough spices in my opinion but that's normal in canada as they turn down the heat in most restaurants. Few things you must try - - Steelhead Trout Ceviche - unreal - Peruvian Scallops - out of this world - Wild Sea Prawns - boom Lots of good choices, pretty tough to misfire. Cuchillo is a new new Latin-themed restaurant in the fringes of Gastown and Downtown Eastside, landmarked by a skull neon awning. Barely opened a month and there's a crowd forming already and protesters outside, green with envy, for city revival and booming business. Oh, what credit does that give them. But I digress. Service is friendly, food is top shelf - perhaps this is what they call 'high end'. Inside exposed brick and wooden communal high top tables fill the center; skull themed tiles surround the kitchen and the smell of delectable warms the space. Mojito: one damn fine drink with all the essential aesthetics. White Sangria: Pears, pineapples, grapes, apples. Ceviche - Mixto Traditionale: octopus tiradito, side stripe prawn, rockfish, mussels y calms, sweet potato puree. I felt like I was a at seaside market in Spain filled with colorful flavors. Ceviche - Local Albacore Tuna Y Pipian Rojo: warm Peruvian double smoked bacon causa. Light delicate flavors highlighting the buttery tuna with bursts of bright smoked bacon. The potato stack at the bottom was unexpectedly distinctive with seasoning. Taqueria - Mole Lamb: albondigas sardo parmesan browned garlic popcorn. We appreciated the gameyness from the lamb meatball which was only elevated with the toasted garlic. The use of the popcorn was clever and at times I almost thought it to be cracklin skin softed by sauce. Taqueria - pulled duck y cracklin' roasted garlic, blackberry habanero jam. The duck shallows in comparison to the lamb tacos. The flavors are subtle and not as pungent. The best would be to have the duck first followed by the lamb. Pork Belly Confit: maple chipotle, tamarind glaze, chicaron, patacones, minced onion y jalapeno. Tender soft pork belly in a sweet-spicy sauce. The sweet yam patty is slightly crispy with stickiness. And contrasted with fried pork rinds. The sauce however was too overdressed, overpowering the natural flavor of the pork... Like arriving to a beach picnic in full prom attire. There was only so much we could sample in one sitting. We must make a feast out of this sometime and try the other dishes. For now, I'll have to just reminiscence and drool over the photos. read more

Cool atmosphere, great service and really good food! We came here during Happy Hour and ordered the $15 special (lime margarita and 2 tacos of choice, such an insane deal) and a bunch of appetizers. The only reason I'm giving Cuchillo 4 stars is because the margarita and tacos weren't as stellar as other places I've been. All the appetizers were delicious though - super fresh with authentic Latin American flavours and spices. We had the guacamole, which was perfectly made with huge chunks of avocado and no garlic, a nice and cheesy queso fundido, grilled shisito peppers that were blistered perfectly, yucca fries and a very tasty chipotle fry bread. I'd come back for sure, to try the mains and other dishes. Thanks, Cuchillo! read more

Situated in a remarkably questionable area, this adorable place is definitely worth the trek through Vancouver's downtown east side. This part of the neighbourhood is definitely a little rough so it's always a good idea to be cautious when the sun starts to set. Long communal tables are aligned in the centre of the restaurant and contemporary lamps hang from the ceiling. Brick walls cover the perimeter of this little place. Love. Warm atmosphere, check. We were greeted by a friendly gal and agreed to steal a spot at the bar as the rest of the regular seating was quite full (not too surprising for a Friday night). Our bartender seemed to be quite busy but was doing his best. He was great with table maintenance, ensuring all our dirty dishes were collected as soon as we were done with them. And he was also very accommodating when I requested to alter my mai tai. Great customer service, check. We decided to order the albacore tuna ceviche, white bean Parmesan fundido, pulled pork tacos, chicken tacos and dulce de leche for dessert. Everything was delicious but I must say, the white bean queso fundido is to die for! Great food, check. The food didn't take too long to arrive and we left very satisfied. Overall, we had a lovely dining experience and will surely be back. Definitely recommend! read more

One thing I loved about this place was the atmosphere. Sitting at the bar was a great idea here as we were checked upon regularly. I tried a few different dishes here including the Peruvian diver caught scallop ceviche, white bean queso fundido (recommended by staff), Baja style battered rockfish (pretty good), and confit of local octopus (very unique!). Overall I was satisfied with my choices, some were much better than others. I would recommend this place primarily to someone who is a fan of Spanish tapas. read more

It's nice to visit your hometown and see that it's seen a change in scenery with cool new places to grab grub. Cuchillo being one of them. When telling some friends that I ate here, I heard about the protests, which I don't fully understand. What exactly does anti-gentrification protesting achieve? It's not like it suddenly undoes itself and not like this one restaurant is single handedly gentrifying the entire area. Either way by being a patron of Cuchillo I suppose I'm part of the problem. On to the restaurant, it felt like a place I could easily find here in New York with it's latin flavored cocktails reminding me of Salvation Taco. Depending on your perspective that's either a very good or very bad thing. It has an airy and open environment that gives off an incredibly warm vibe. Couple this with the super friendly waitstaff (they might just be Canadian friendly and I've been away for too long) that will explain all the dishes and super apologetic for the most minimal of delays. My dining companion and I had an assortment of the various small dishes and cocktails and just skipped right over the mains. The most memorable dish was probably the baby grilled corn which is served (and devoured!) in its husk. read more

So much yes to this place!! I had the tomato salad with the stuffed squash flower on top. The tropical guacamole is amazing!! The chips are crisp and the sharing plates are perfect. They offer a top notch selection of drinks. I wanted a mojito and they made an amazing one!! And, even though tequila is there specialty they made my boss a perfect martini. They make a mean dessert too!! Parking is street and paid and this place is perfect for business, birthdays or date nights. I love this place. The staff is incredible. The pork belly only had three pieces, but they were sizable chunks, and we were definitely feeling full afterwards. One big thing about this place is that it is definitely built for sharing so bring a bigger group with you and order a bunch of plates! It's more fun that way and everyone gets a little bit of everything. Yippie! I'm definitely coming back here to try out some more deliciousness. read more

I crossed the line and it was worth it! To start the night our group was met at the entrance by a protest group - Downtown Eastside Anti-Gentrification Group. As a note I am all for free speech and the ability to protest. I was happy that they were friendly and not in your face, so they didn't impact the vibe of the night. Inside had a great energy from the get go. The kind of energy one sees when a newer place opens and the crowd are Cuchillo virgins (me included) and are all excited to taste the hype. Yelp review have been solid so my expectations were high. Let's dish it out! Tequila Flights: I've had beer flights but never tequila. Our group of three, who happened to all enjoy tequila really enjoyed these liquids. It's amazing to taste all three types and really savour the differences between them. I'd share these with a group unless you want to go solo and have a tiny Mexican in your stomach going "Ariba!". Pulled Duck Y Cracklin: my favorite dish of the evening. Good things come in three, and three tacos came out beautifully presented. Duck is fatty and I really enjoyed that they ensured the juiciness was there when you bite into these bad boys. Quack! Pork Belly: keep in mind that I have a bit of an obsession with pork belly and I must order it every place I go. The belly itself was prepared fine, however my issue was with the tamarind glaze. Overly sweet and so strong that it took away from the other flavours of this dish. Still ate it, but feel it could be improved upon. Service was sharp for a new operation even though you could clearly see it was some servers first nights. Our server was very friendly, gave us the low down on the whole menu and gave good recommendations. Our drinks were never left to the bottom and this is important to me. Advanced Rating: "Now it cuts like a knife, but it feels so right". read more

Wow what a pleasant surprise; the food here definitely exceeded what I was expecting. Vibe is very railtown, brick and beam, low lighting, long center tables. They were full but had a couple bar seats available so we took those. Bartenders were busy but had good recommendations. I.E.- they weren't afraid to say "no don't get that, get this instead, you'll love it." And they were right. The guacamole was great but the tacos were what stood out. For $10 you get two tacos on double tortillas, but there is enough filling for you to make x4 per plate. The lamb with popcorn was excellent. Drinks here were great. As per the bartenders recommendation, I adventured a bit and tried the El Pelonchas, a smoky concoction that was really satisfying to drink. Also tried a tequila flight, which is a great value considering you get to sample some top shelf stuff. No Cuervo here- if you have an aversion to tequila (lots of us do!) you might be pleasantly surprised. It also comes with an awesome grapefruit sorbet as a palate cleanser. This was refreshing and I had to order it twice! We went for x3 of the taco plates and the guacamole appy. Both left really full and satisfied. Was more than enough food. Definitely as good as it gets. If I could give more than 5-stars, I would. My first time dining here but my friend's 2nd time. We partook in the Dine Out Vancouver $30 special. We had one of everything on the menu and shared each plate: * Lois Lake Steelhead Trout Ceviche - Tasty. The sauce was devine: ginger; fish sauce; mirin; lemon & lime juice. Light and very flavourful. * Albacore Tune Ceviche Y Pipian Rojo - good * Morita Chili BBQ Pulled Pork Tack - tasty but a bit too spicy for my palette * Roasted Cauliflower Taco - Great! My 2nd favourite dish of the evening * Wild Argentinian Sea Prawns - delicious. * Char Grilled Bison Flank Steak - a bit tough * BC Pork Belly Confit - wasn't so sure I'd like Pork Belly but it was my very favourite dish of the evening. Delightfully tender and flavourful: maple chipotle y tamarind glaze. (I could've made a full meal out of a few servings of Pork Belly Confit) * Chia Seed Crusted Peruvian Scallop - the coconut cream corn was soooo good (and 9.5 times out of 10 I will never eat corn). Dessert was exquisite: Ancho Chilie Chocolate Brownie. The brownie on it's own would've been perfect but the toppings of kaffir lime horchta, white chocolate ganache and pecan brittle put it way over the top. Margartias. Well I have raved up my fave Mexican place over and over again as having the very best margaritas in the lower mainland. I'm afraid I might have to kick them down a 1/2 notch because Cuchillo's margaritas on the rocks with a perfectly salted rim were by far the best I've ever drank. Brandon was our waiter and man he is who you need to look to if you want to know how to serve a customer. Prompt, knows the ingredients inside out and backwards; friendly but not intrusive; and always keeping his eye on our water and margarita glasses. All around: impeccable service. We had a great seat right by the kitchen so we could see the goings on. I like the layout of this place, long and lean and a very nice ambiance. I would highly recommend dining here. Honestly, probably the best meal I've ever eaten. Can't complain about a single thing. read more

Good service & food!! I made reservation several weeks before coming on a Saturday night, only available time was 6:15pm for four people. Street meter parking, or if you get lucky a street over offers free street parking. We arrived the place was pretty busy but we were sat right away. Cool looking place, very open, and not very big but it might look it when you enter. Several long communal tables. We were sat near the back in front of the open kitchen. Everything is very open, which is amazing, and cool lighting. We were a party of four, the server explained the menu which is more sharing plates tapa style. We started with all three house guacamole: tropical with fresh fruits, chipotle and chicharron, and poblano tomatillo. The restaurant was dark and a little hard to see the food. I really enjoyed the poblano tomatillo guac! We ordered two types of tacos: Fish taco & Pulled Pork. It was a consensus we all enjoyed the pulled pork, nice kick to it! We ordered two ceviche: Albacore tuna & the Scallops with corn on a cob. I knew I wanted the tuna which was cooked perfectly. I really enjoyed the corn on the cob with the scallops. Our main event was the grilled beef streak layered with Caesar salad and chorizo mash. I found we had a lot of potato on most of our dishes which I understand its part of the Latin American cuisine, it really filled us up. The steak was good!!
