Always enjoy the food here and their unique dishes. It is not just your run of the mill tacos here. These are elevated tacos. Beef steak tacos have a nice sauce and it was really tender. The pork taco comes with a piece chicharron. We also had the lamb on mashed potatoes main entre. It was tasty and tender but wished they give us more lamb though. It would be 5 star if there was sufficient lamb. It came very 3 heaping spoonful of mashed potatoes which was very nicely seasoned. Visited Cuchillo for a memorable girls night out. One of our friends is vegan and the restaurant was pretty accommodating. Vibes was pretty chill, drinks were great, foods were decent and reasonable price, overall pretty satisfied with our experience. Blistered Shishito Chillies ($12) 7.5/10 I have been known to occasionally eat thai chili pepper whole as snack, so this sounds right up my alley. Nicely charred and served with creamy hummus and crispy plaintain. It's barely spice so I feel like people with low spicy tolerance can also handle this. Brussel Sprout Frita ($12) 7.5/10 Roasted brussel sprout is one of my favourite veggies in general, but the honey sesame dressing really took it up a notch. Tumeric Cauliflower Frita ($18) 6/10 A bit too soggy and saucy for my taste. Not bad at all but I prefer the other two appetizers we got. read more

Wow, great modern Latin American Tapas! Love the menu here, they have a nack for creating their own unique dishes that for the most part, are a home run. Favourite appies are the White Bean Queso Fundido, Blue Corn Bread with the guajlo chili butter (to die for!) and the Ensalada Otoño (kobacha squash with quinoa). Queso Saganaki, fried cheese taco is my fave. Awesome ambience, a huge highlight of Powell Street. Some staff have been here for what feels like decades. Cocktails are also great. Very good portions for the price. Great presentation. Good pacing to the meal. Interior is very warm and good for socializing, but also a bit hipster. Lots of warm wood and lighting, good ambience. Bar seating consists of high tops, then there are regular tables and a community table. Location is good for people living in Gastown or Chinatown, but lots of meter parking. Excellent drink list with twists on the classics. Tried the xmf which was a bourbon and mezcal drink with cranberry that tasted like a Christmas or winter drink. Tried the guacamole and the Brussels sprouts for apples. Brussels had good texture and had an interesting twist with a honey sauce. Guacamole was fresh and the waiter brought extra chips when we ran out. The ceviches reminded me of Peruvian causas. The tacos were inventive and the pork one had a substantial amount of meat. The mains were excellent, my favourite being the sablefish which was perfectly cooked and atop potatoes two ways and caesar salad. Not flavours I would have thought of, but somehow it worked. The rice pudding was the right ending to the meal with a layer of lemon curd and toasted coconut. Its obvioud they use good quality ingredients here. Service was super attentive and friendly. The waiter even brought a complimentary sorbet dessert for the kid in our party and offered to take a photo of us. Would def come back here. Good for friends, groups and date night. read more

Came here for my best friend's birthday dinner because we had heard a lot about their ceviche. The food was really good, specifically their street corn, cornbread azul, and cabeza de puerco tacos. They had a variety of cocktails, my favourite was their Mexican firing squad because I'm a fan of sweeter drinks in general. Their pina borracha was also nice, quiet refreshing. Went on a Wednesday evening when it wasn't too crowded but the wait times were still high. Granted we were a party of 9, but it took them 20-30 mins to get our second round of drinks. We were told that the reservation was for 2 hrs but it took them about an hour to get our food and drinks. This is the only reason I would give this place a 4/5. They only had one staff member doing all the tables so maybe they were understaffed? I would definitely go back to check it out again. But would recommend this place if you're looking at quality tuna ceviches. :) read more

I've wanted to try Cuchillo for so long! Although not in the best area, this place is a must visit! The vibes and interior are so cool and they've thought of every last detail. The service was great! Very friendly staff and they serve a yummy cucumber water. I got the spicy marg, but they've got a ton of special cocktails to choose from. my friend got one of the mock tails. As an appy, we shared the guac. Tbh i've had better from other spots but it was still delish! For a main, i had the steak tacos and oh MY these were amazing. There was a blueberry spicy jam, lemon aioli, super tender steak pieces, and some sort of potato hasbrowns. These were some of the best tacos i've ever had! The pricing wasn't too bad either. Went here for a private party we had a few different items on the menu to eat all were amazing. The service was great. Had an amazing time. We found lots of parking spots some free and a few pay parking but it was only a dollar per hour close to the restaurant. It was pretty dark in the down stairs private party area so my pictures didn't work out so I will have to go back again and eat upstairs and take pictures it is worth it. Great place. read more

Hidden gem! Fantastic margaritas, unique and delicious food. We didn't have a reservation but were able to sit at the bar with the friendly and helpful bartenders. The guacamole and chips was some of the best guacamole I've ever had - it had just a splash of salsa verde on top. The scotch egg was wrapped with green chorizo and was like nothing I've ever eaten before. We cleaned off the plate, down to the grilled scallions and pickled onions and jalapenos. It was very filling for two people. The skirt steak tacos were cooked to perfection with a sweet jam to top it off for a wonderful balance of savory and sweet. Even the tortillas tasted homemade. bestie s and i had an impromptu movie&dinner date planned - this was bestie s' restaurant choice. we didn't have a reso but we were accommodated quickly as a walk-in. our server, annie, was super nice and attentive the whole time - shoutout to her! the place is quite dark inside but it had a casual ambience - def a place where you can have a date or a frd's gathering/catch-up. we were seated in the very back of the restaurant because it was quite warm when we went - it felt like there was no AC or barely any. once we got the menu, annie did a basic run thru as this was our first time at the restaurant - basically tapas/appies with mains and tacos. we started off with drinks - we each had 2 but s had one that was the same as mine. for our 1st round, i had the piña borracha - a light, refreshing pineapple drink. the pineapple is def the star of the drink, and there's a slight kick frm the rum. s had the classic margarita - basic, simple margarita. as for our 2nd round, s had the piña borracha and i ventured to have the papacito. the chili rum was the highlight of the drink - the fruity flavours do not shine thru as much as the piña borracha; i much preferred my 1st drink than the 2nd one. now onto food! annie gave us some awesome recommendations with the ceviche - we had the peruvian scallop first then the albacore tuna. loved the scallop - not saying that the tuna was bad but it pales in comparison. the pickled chilies and the mexican corn provided a nice sweet and sour contrast to the rich scallops. the albacore tuna is not your typical ceviche - like annie had stated - it sits atop bacon and potatoes. i did like the rojo totopo aka red tomato sauce with the tuna dish. we had also ordered the guacamole and the chorizo verde scotch egg. the guacamole was rich and chunky, but s and i both would have liked a little kick/spice added to it to cut the richness a bit. the chorizo verde scotch egg was delish - the aji amarillo mustard aioli was MY absolutely fav and the house pickled poblanos were also super nice. s and i were planning on getting ice cream but we left food coma'd out. def want to come back with a larger group to try more of the tapas as well as the tacos! read more

A friend suggested Cuchillo to me for Dine Out Vancouver and glad I took the suggestion. I had forgotten Chef Stuart Irving open Cuchillo when Cobre was closed in 2012. Chef Irving's Cobre restaurant was a little gem offering amazing Latin American dishes in the heart of Gastown. Cuchillo continues with the Latin American flavours. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing. Service was fantastic from the time we enter the front door to the end. The restaurant is shaped in a long rectangular and has a shared communal bench in the front and tables on the side and back. The skull decors is here and there and fun to spot while wait for the food. Situated in Japantown, our server informed us the site was a former Japanese bathhouse. The drink section is broad and their website is easy to navigate for details. I ordered the Alhambra beer which was light, refreshing and finished with a bitter note so a good paring for Latin/Mexican food. The 2021 dine out menu for $35 offered 4 courses. With 2 people, it was perfect for sharing. Our favourites were Peruvian Scallop Esquites, Tuna Tataki Adobado, Pollo Pinillos Tostada, Wild Argentine Sea Prawns, White Corn Cheese Cake and Ancho Chile Chocolate Brownies. I didn't enjoy the Turmeric Roasted Cauliflower as it was too sweet for my taste and the BC Short Rib el Pastor Asado as it was a bit tough to chew. However, my friend liked the short ribs so it must be me. The flavours were there highlighting the main ingredients. Definitely coming back to try their regular menu. read more

This place was amazing! I ended up going for a friend's birthday and I cannot stress how delicious the food here is. We were able to do a tasting and try a variety of items on the menu which is probably the best way to eat here. The menu can accommodate vegetarian, vegan and allergies so don't be afraid to come check this place out. The service was attentive and prompt. The staff is super knowledgeable about the courses they were serving and even with a large group, it was 10/10 for service. My table shared the following dishes: Guacamole de la Casa - easily one of the best guacamoles I've ever had. It was fresh and the chips are made in-house. This is a must order for sure! Blistered Shishito Chillies - don't be afraid to try this dish. The overall spice of the peppers is mild but packed with a ton of flavour. The hummus and plantain chips help to elevate the flavours and textures of the dish. Brussel Sprout Frita - OMG! If you aren't a lover of brussel sprouts, this will make you one. The lemon and honey absolutely compliments the Mexican togarashi flavours in this dish. Peruvian Scallop Ceviche - one word to describe this dish, WOW! The scallops are tender and the combination of flavours from the street corn make this easily one of my favourite dishes. Wild Argentine Sea Prawns - mouthwatering and absolutely delicious. I loved the butter browned corn arepas the prawns came with. Amazing! Turmeric Cauliflower Frita Tacos - the cauliflower is perfectly done and the tomato ginger jam elevates this dish. Mushroom Tacos - visually stunning tacos and loved the chunks of roasted garlic in this taco. Dulce de Leche - the churros are delicious and I really enjoyed the caramelized pineapple. Bonus: the cocktails here were beautiful and I was able to try a couple of mocktails (Tropic Thunder and La Vida Dulce) that were excellent. read more

We had a dinner reservation next door at 9pm but we didn't have much to do prior to do that. The restaurant next door recommend this place when I asked for a nearby bar. I must say I am very glad I paid a visit to this restaurant/bar This bar is Mexican theme. Meaning most of their drinks are tequila and mezcal based, they do have some wine and local beer too. The food menu is Mexican influenced as well. It's just so happen to have a large group of people and I was worried we would run late for our next reservation, so I asked the hostess, she by far is the most friendly and helpful hostess I've ever met. And made sure we were attended and made sure the stuff would get to us asap We didn't want to ruin our appetite so we ordered some drink and just one food item, the pork belly. My God the confit pork belly is probably the best I had so far. $24 for 3 big pieces. The garnish was amazing as well. I tried the mezcal flight, I forgot the names but the 2nd shot was my favorite. I apologized that it seems like we were in a rush and explained we had a reservation next door. Apparently St Lawrence often refer customers to cuchillo. Now the location of this joint is defiantly not the most desirable - (sadly the Eastside in most cities gets a bad rap) - but for what it lacks in address (suspect neighbourhood) it more than makes up with via - decor, menu, service & escape from reality! Would I park my car around here you ask - no! Still a young baby in the business - Cuchillo opened in 2013. We had the Szechuan Peppercorn Rockfish & Queso Saganaki Tacos, Corn Bread Azul (corn bread with a twist), and Wild Argentinian Sea Prawns. These dishes were tantalizing & scrumptious! I would definitely come back to check out this restaurant again in the summer & have a drink & chill out. There's not much really worth hanging around for in the surrounding area, so once dinner was done - it was - 'Hasta La Vista' we're outta here. First time at Cuchillo and it was one of my favourite restaurants I've been to in the past month. Cuchillo offers Mexican cuisine with interesting cocktails and small bites. The ambience of the place is bar-like and causal. We ordered 6 dishes in total, my favourite dish was the Scallop Ceviche - tortilla chips topped with fresh scallops, corn, and pickled chilies. We originally only ordered 2 tacos (steak + cauliflower), but both surpassed our expectations so we decided to try the pulled pork one as well. Scotch egg was done perfectly too. The only dish we may skip out on next time is the chilies, it wasn't bad but it was a bit mediocre compared to the rest of the food we had. This place is a SHELL of what it used to be. My wife and I have gone to Cuchillo almost a dozen times, and it has always been an affordable and delicious date night. However, the quality of service has been on a steady decline, and after last night, we won't be coming back. As soon as we got to Cuchillo, the bald man who greeted us at the door was rude to my wife. We then got to our table and sat for almost 10 minutes before our server, who reeked of booze, brought us some water. We placed our order, then waited for him to drop off the wrong drinks and disappear. Our first dish arrived shortly after, and we tried to ask the lady who dropped it off if we could talk to our server. This lady was either wasted or had special needs; whichever of the two, my wife and I were not impressed with how she spoke to us. We eventually got our server's attention, and he brought us the correct drinks. At the end of the night, we got our bill and the first round of drinks was still on it. We informed our server, and he said something unintelligible and then passed me the machine. Cuchillo used to be one of our favorite date night locations, but after last night's visit, it's clear they're staffing the location with the inhabitants that live on the sidewalk outside the establishment. It has turned into a stain of a restaurant in a neighborhood that has so many critically acclaimed ones. We will not be coming back. read more

I was a bit skeptical when my friend told me about how Railtown was slowly becoming trendy, since I have always had the impression that it was a rather sketchy area. I was honestly surprised to find so many upper end eateries in the area such as Cuchillo, Ask for Luigi, St. Lawrence, Cadeaux, etc. Since I work in the financial district, I rarely go this far East but I'm glad that my friend had introduced it to me because it opened up a whole new world of restaurants! The area is definitely becoming more and more gentrified as newer restaurateurs move East to seek cheaper rent. Cuchillo has an excellent happy hour special from 5-6 everyday, where you can choose a pair of tacos from their regular menu and one of their four margaritas for $15 total! It's seriously great value since the tacos are stuffed to the brim. We also really enjoyed their unique cornbread and scotch egg. Our favourite dish of the night was the pork taco, which was amazingly moist and delicious. We will be back soon to try all of their tacos (and margaritas!) read more

Non-descript storefront but bold and balanced flavors. The Purple Skull establishment does quite well for itself, even with its off-the-beaten-path location. We were a group of 9 for Dine Out 2019. Upon arriving, our table was still occupied by a previous group, so we gathered at the long bar and waited an extra 10-15 minutes. The plus side to this was the added opportunity to buy drinks. Alcoholic or not, all the drinks that we tried were incredible, none of the watered down flavors that cheaper bars are known for. The trout ceviche was beautifully lime-y, and the avocado/wasabi puree that came with the poké was perfectly balanced. Any more avocado and it would've been too fatty; any more wasabi and it would've been too spicy. The lamb tacos were rich and meaty; I didn't know ground meat could taste so expensive. The Parmesan popcorn was a good idea, but it felt a little too chewy and stale. The wild sea prawns atop corn arepas with apple jalapeño pipian verde were good but on the heavy/buttery side. Might have been nice to see a wedge of lime or something acidic with this. Great atmosphere, attentive but casual service, and for $35, you're getting a whole lot of bang for your buck! read more

Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've had in Vancouver in awhile. It was a well designed spot with a lively atmosphere. Unlike most restaurants this busy, it didn't feel as if the servers were rushing to get us out. But, none of that matters if the food isn't good, and man, is it good. We started with the scallop civeche and were pleasantly surprised by the lightness and crunch of the seaweed. Next, we had a scotch egg drizzled in chipotle sauce sitting above an ***eggplant. The rough texture of the scotch egg balanced well with the creaminess of the eggplant. Then came the mains, we ordered the sablefish and the wild boar sausage. Both were winners, but if I had to pick one dish it would be the wild boar sausage. Not only was the sausage bursting with flavour, there were complexities to the dish including cherry tomatoes and pockets of salty/sour chicharon that made the dish go from good to great. Meanwhile the sablefish was just good, as we felt that there was too much breading and too little sablefish in the dish. For dessert we shared a churro dish, even though we both admitted that we were stuffed. Portion size isn't a problem here. Although we were both almost uncomfortably full, we were glad that we got the churros. The presentation of the dish perched in the martini glass was fantastic, and as we dug into it we found more and more layers to pair with the churros. From the seasonal berries to the crunch of the honeycomb to the caramel base at the bottom glass it was all very tasty. All in all, would highly recommend this spot. I'll be going again and trying some of the other dishes, because we were impressed with the complexity and execution for almost everything that we tried. read more

Yum! I was looking for something different tonight (for a nice takeout dinner) and ended up finding this on my Yelp bookmark list. Even though I picked up my order 20 minutes later than it was ready, the quality was still there. I ordered the steelhead trout ceviche and the green chillies and they nicely plated inside the box so I careful replated onto proper plates when I got home. The steelhead trout ceviche was well balanced, the crispy fish skin was surprisingly tasty. The green chillies with plantain chips and hummus were flavourful and would go well with a drink. The Maître D' (likely the owner?) was kind of rude which we could dismiss. What we cannot dismiss was the quality of the food. Perhaps it was the Dine Out menu but sadly the food was just bad. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful and relaxing. I had the jalapeño margarita, which was absolutely delicious. We then split the Mexico City elote, tuna ceviche, pork tacos and sable fish. The elote was so flavourful- I would've ordered another if we hadn't already had too much food. The pork tacos were another standout. The rest of the dishes were also amazing. Cuchillo popped up on a couple recommended lists for our visit, so we decided to check it out. The cocktail program was super unique, and we tried a couple including the Sons of Vancouver Sour and the Oaxaca Old Fashioned, and started with the Peruvian Scallop Ceviche and the Guacamole de la Casa. The guac was super herbaceous and was plated beautifully, not your average guac! and the ceviche was so good! The only consideration with the ceviche was that it had many delicious flavors, but was a little overwhelming if you had a bit with all the accompaniments involved. For entrees we had the Tumeric Cauliflower Frita tacos, and it was absurdly delicious, well balanced and so tender. We happened to overhear our bartender say he was on a mission to make the "spiciest spicy Margarita in Vancouver" so we had to test that out. WOAH. He somehow made it so aggressively spicy and yet, it cooled in the mouth before you got too heated, which made it surprisingly sippable for the level of spice. read more

Saganaki tacos were an odd but delicious combo, who doesn't love cheese wrapped in a carb? Brussel Sprouts were decent, nothing amazing but good. My boyfriend and I came here on Valentines Day last week and we had very high expectations! Vibe was unique where it was romantic but laid back at the same time. We had a reservation and we were seated towards the back area right in front of the open concept "kitchen". Autumn 2018 Menu: came here for the first time for a friend's birthday and we learned that they change their food and cocktail menu often so had a chance to try out couple new things. Firstly, the interior design is beautiful and unique and definitely a cool place for gatherings or night outs. The bar area is beautiful. In the menu, everything is kind of bite sized, tapas style so really recommend ordering a bunch of things to share and taste. We had the white bean queso fundido (cheese fondue), yuca frita, pork belly tacos and rockfish tacos. These were enough for 2 hungry people. We also ordered main in the beginning and ended up cancelling as there was so much food. Loved the tacos. They come as pairs and they are really big and stuffed. Rockfish is probably my favorite with the crunch but loved the sweet and spicy pulled pork taci with mango salsa as well. Yuca frita (a starchy south american veggie like a cross between a potato and a parsnip) was very delicious. Crunchy and salty on the outside, chewy and slightly sweet on the inside. I can eat that all day and paired well with the garlic mayo. Not a fan of the cheese fondue though as it wasn't very cheesy rather it was more of a bean puree with a hint of cheese. I kinda expected a gooey oozy cheese fondue so was disappointed but if you expect a bean dip and order this you can be happy. I had the pina boracha cocktail and I wasn't blown away. I also found it a bit 'light' and not complex. Maybe try the margaritas instead. read more

I took my friend here for her birthday yesterday and we shared a few plates between us: Antojitos - Chipotle Sea Salt Dusted Fry Bread, Ensalada - Confit of Local Octopus, La Mesa - Pork Belly Confit and the Chia Seed Crusted Peruvian Scallops. We were actually too full to eat any more, as their portions are quite generous here. We also both had a mojito, which was very good, albeit a little bit sweet. The Fry Bread is one of my favourites - I noticed they toned down the spice since I was there last, so it's not quite kick-in-the-face spicy as it was before. The scallops dish is also different, and I think I prefer the way they served them before. Not a huge fan of chia seeds, but I think I just really preferred the sausage they used to serve with the scallops. The octopus was very tender and the sauces served with it packed a lot of flavour. My favourite dish of the night had to be the pork belly, though. Wow, it was cooked to perfection and just melted in my mouth. So amazing. Too bad it's not so healthy for you, or I could eat this every day. Definitely a great meal. read more

Wow, what a popular restaurant and it was a full house on a Thursday night. It was our first time trying Latin cuisine. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner at Cuchillo and would definitely recommend this to our friends. We ordered: - Diver Caught Peruvian Scallops - 4/5 - the scallop was alright but the overall taste of the dish was very good. - Yuca Frita - 4/5 - first time trying yuca and it was good. - Pan Roasted BC Sablefish - 5/5 - very taste and texture is good. The bread on the bottom of the fish was very tasty and worked really well with the fish. - Grilled BC Angus Skirtsteak - 4/5 - very tasty and flavour was very good but the steak was a tad chewy. - Wild Argentine Prawn Tostada - 5/5 - great flavours. - We ordered 2 non alcoholic drinks - 3/5 - the guava drink was good but way too much ice.
