My Seattle friend was visiting for the day, so we decided to try out El Guapo for dinner. The restaurant is participating in Dine Out Vancouver, and my friend loves Mexican food, so off we went. We had made reservations for 6pm and it was a good thing we did! The place was jam-packed when we arrived. I think we got the last seat in the house. At least we were seated promptly. I noticed that their outdoor patio area was also full, despite being wintertime and freezing out (the patio had heaters. The folks there seemed happy). The place was super cute, but because it was busy, the volume was really loud. The crowd seemed to primarily be young professionals, in their 20's, perhaps 30's. I was definitely one of the "senior" people in the place (not that I care). The hostess and our server were both the sweetest, nicest ladies! Super super friendly and attentive. We got there a bit before 6pm so they gave us a Happy Hour menu, along with their regular menu and the Dine Out Vancouver (DOV) specials. We ordered stuff from all menus: -my friend ordered a spicy margarita (she loved it) -we shared 2 pork tacos from the HH menu (these were absolutely delicious. I'd order them again in a heartbeat) -from the DOV menu we shared the beet salad (excellent but perhaps a bit heavy on the dressing. Should have asked for that on the side); 2 quesabirria (these were good but not my favorite as they had a strong spice profile that I wasn't keen on, plus they were super charred. I'm sure this is how they're supposed to be and it's just me, but they weren't my thing); and for dessert, the churros. OMG the churros! These were, IMO, the hit of the night! 4 warm, toasty cinnamon sticks, perfectly fried, not greasy in the least, but crunchy outside, soft and warm inside, sweet, with caramel dipping sauce and a bit of vanilla ice cream. Honestly, there's nothing better that these churros! I should note that they have a really nice, fully-stocked bar here, and lots of tv's on the walls (all playing the Montreal-Boston hockey game when we were there). They had a lot of posters up advertising their upcoming Super Bowl specials, too. Might be a fun place to go to watch the big game in a few weeks.... Anyhow, we had a great meal here. Had a great time on a Saturday evening! The wait was only around 15 minutes for a table for 3 people. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Service was incredibly fast. I think we ordered and had our food come out within 10 minutes! They offer lots of options and have dietary restrictions clearly listed on their menu. So, our bad, but we came on a huge night! Glad they take reservations but this place was slammed. It was a game not, concert night, and playoff game. And we came for happy hour which was even more busy! We started with MEXICAN TABBOULEH (cous-cous, corn, pico de gallo, cucumber, feta, avocado, cilantro-lime dressing which was incredible and such a neat twist. The be dressing was very flavourful and light. I read that their SWEET POTATO Tacos (nut mole, feta, chile de arbol mayo, green onions toasted almonds on corn tortilla) and as a hit. It was not my favourite. It was a thick rectangle of sweet potatoes and everything else that came with it got lost in that. I tasted sweet potatoes and almonds. Their green sauce was really nice and I loved their hot sauce selection. Lastly, we got the STREET CORN TATER TOTS (queso fondu, charred jalapenos, pico de gallo, toasted corn, cotija, green onion). This dish runs at $17 but it was SO FREAKING GOOD! The tots are crispy and there is plenty of cheese. The corn is subtly sweet and the pico cools its all off. Pairing this all with margs is the move. I love Mexican food and good Mexican is not only hard to find but also tricky to make. I was craving it and luckily this place is walking distance to where I'm currently visiting. The atmosphere was warm and inviting with a beautiful bar and the service was great! At first the prices did strike me as a bit on the higher end, but I'm willing to pay for great food and decided to try it. I'm glad I did. I ordered the fish tacos (twice) and the El Guapo Burger. Oh my lord. The fish tacos had so many wonderful flavours going on, and as cheesy as it sounds, it felt like (yes, I'm gonna say it) a party in my mouth! The fish was super fresh and seasoned just right, and all the different sauces they used complimented each other just perfectly. The contrast between the fresh hot batter fried fish and the cold sauces and taco was addicting, hence, I ordered it twice. I also tried the El Guapo burger and it was perfection. The outside of the beef patty was slightly crispy with the rest of the patty juicy and very tender. The sauces, pickles and cheese melted but yet kept their own was...well...inhale worthy. Which is exactly what happened. I inhaled it. (please don't visualize that!) The fries were fresh and seasoned and their little green sauce...well...I put that shit on everything! Oh, I'm going back. Sweet potato tacos were the best. So mouthful and flavoured corn soft tacos filled with roaster sweet potato and all tangy salsa . Trotters were special because of the extra touch or flavours and toppings in it. Melted cheese just added that extra softness to crunchy fried potato fritters. Ambiance is great and the whole space is huge. Outdoor patio is heated ( i mean seriously heated because u can feel the table top just like a warm blanket) Anyways the server who served us was great. She suggested the vegetarian options n selection of drinks they had. We went light though. I found this place to be mediocre at best. I didn't even bother taking pictures of the food because I was so put off by the service. I don't know if my server was having a bad day or if she just really hates her job. I came here for happy hour but the experience was far from happy. The margarita I ordered tasted like watered down lime juice. When I told my server, all I got was a flat "Ok so do you want another one?". When my server came around for happy hour last call, I ordered one more dish. After I paid the bill I realized I was charged for the full price instead of the happy hour price. I asked my server why the full price was charged and she said it was because I missed happy hour. I then told her I only ordered it after she came around for last call so had I known happy hour was over then I wouldn't have ordered it. Instead of admitting her mistake, my server told me since I already paid with my credit card it was too late for her to reverse the transaction and the most she could do is to give me the difference in cash. I didn't even bother asking for the correct amount back in cash (I was shorted $2) because I just wanted to get out and put this horrible experience behind me. 100% will not be back. read more

Atmosphere is nice and quaint which we enjoyed but they lacked in a better selection of cocktails and it just didn't seem to hit us. We had a few cocktails and a nacho to share and the nachos were decent but nothing to write home about. Service was good and the restaurant seemed pretty clean. read more

It was a weekday and we ve decided to go for some drinks in yaletown. "El guapo" that catchy name and the fact it is relatively a new place were enough reasons to make us step in and dive in the adventure. Place was nicely decorated , staff were super friendly and kind. We got the guapo lager and it was fine nothing wow but quite satisfying. Also we ordred some tacos and breaded shrimp with lime. Im not a big tacos fun but they were good enough while the shimp appetizer was impressive. I was walking by decided to stop in because the restaurant had a unique look and I haven't been there yet. I'm so happy I decided to check it out. From the moment I arrived Sarah gave amazing service, she answered all my questions and gave me suggestions for my gluten allergy. On top of that the food and wine was delicious I had the Carne Asada on corn tortillas and a glass of rose. After my first bite I knew I'd be coming back, the mix of pineapple, beef, salsa etc were perfection, but the most impressive thing for me was the way they fried the cheese, it tastes like the bits of cheese that squeeze out of a grilled cheese onto the grill and it gets that yummy crispy taste.. We've come in here a couple times however brought some new company along. However, this time the service standard has gone extremely lower. Our server who introduced herself as Mackenzie, seemed be very chatty with the guys at the bar that we weren't attended to for 10 minutes. Then we waited another 15 minutes to receive our drinks. My girlfriend asked for some drink and good suggestions which she seemed very rude towards her the entire night while having a very negative attitude with out entire group. When asked about the difference in some tacos she seemed to know nothing about it. They couldn't find our reservation but didn't. Care because it wasn't busy. My drink was served warm and without ice. One of our dishes was forgotten on the pass bar until we asked for it. The waitress didn't come back to our table until the end. The water person walked by to fill glasses around us but skipped our table. Went here after trick o treating so we just happened to land on their happy hour. These are some of the best tacos I've had in .. we'll all I can say is wow. I had their steak tacos (sorry for no pick of that as I was hungry) it had this cool cheese crisp on it. It was so good I want to go back for some more. We also had ceviche, nachos, and fish tacos(this not on happy hour as well we just wanted something off menu) . It all was great. We used to go here when it was the other Mexican restaurant. I had a wonderful time at El Guapo. My friends and I were starving after spending the whole day at the lake and definitely craving a delicious fiesta. El Guapo delivered! First we ordered a round of spicy margaritas with a tasty and piquante salt rim (piquante like flavourful, not too hot or anything). Then we ordered some nachos, which could have used a larger portion of guac, but still delicious - I would have asked for more guac but the tacos came and boy oh boy was I happy to see them! I ordered two crispy shrimp tacos and one fish taco. They were HUGE! Often tacos are served in threes but two is definitely plenty for a modest portion - three is more of an indulgence (which I was in the mood for). No regrets on my part. The same can't be said for my friend who ordered the sweet potato tacos... tiny!! Sure, there were three of them - but in comparison to the heaping, crispy fried goodness of the sea creatures on my plate it was no contest as to who had the food envy here (spoiler: obviously it wasn't me) The servers were pleasant, efficient, and professional and adhering to all the public health precautions. Looking forward to returning to El Guapo for the taco fix that dreams are made of. read more

I love this spot! Best ceviche I have had outside of Mexico - so fresh, light, with bright flavours and colours. The burger is also very good - similar to shake shack, or in and out burger (but higher end), and the fries are delicious - perfect drinking/hangover food! I also really like the music and the atmosphere, it is so nice to go somewhere downtown and hear something other than top 40 (great classic rock, psych, Sabbath, etc). Unexpected for yaletown, and very much appreciated by my group. The staff were fun, and the drinks were flowing. We had a large table on a very busy night, and the server managed to keep everything separated even though we were moving around, and people were coming and going.
