I came back to Cream with my younger sister on a Sunday afternoon after we'd finished our disappointing lunch at KoJa, next door. We'd driven by Cream the night before and my sister didn't know why there was such a long line in front of their place. So, I told her that I'd bring her back to see why... When we were there, the line wasn't bad at all. We were probably the tenth customers in line so she was happy that the line wasn't horrendous like the previous day. I knew I wanted my red velvet cookies again, but wasn't sure what flavor ice cream I wanted this time--so I asked to taste the blueberry cheesecake flavor and I knew that it was the one. OMG! Could the two flavors be a better match? My sister said she liked my choice as well. She went with the chocolate chip cookies and green tea ice cream. They weren't half bad either. She did mention that we should've held back on our lunch because the ice cream sandwiches were just so filling that neither of us were able to finish them. I guess I failed my challenge. Once a shitty Ms. Fields, then a Beard Papa, the chain sweeteries are just not cutting it on this corner. So what did Berkeley need? A brand new, open late, incredibly cheap, good quality snack spot. And CREAM delivers. Standing for "Cookies Rule Everything Around Me" (excuse me while I nerd out really hard), CREAM just opened recently and BOY is it booming. I have yet to go in where the line ISN'T around the block. Small, hip, and bright. It bumps top 40 shit (eh) but the fun corny shit so it doesn't feel too Miley Cyrus but more what you hear bumping out of cars. The concept is that the store is strictly ice cream and homemade cookies (in addition to a small cooler of sodas and soy milks). One cookie is fifty cents (HOLY TOLEDO!), and ice cream is not all that much more. You can do a cup or cone, single cookies to a dozen, OR what you can do (if you're wild) is get an ice cream sandwich. They are big. They are messy. They are effing delicious. Don't ever ask a customer for a tip. Cream usually sounds like an amazing idea, but I'm usually disappointed because I always hype it up in my mind a LOT. It's not that it's bad or anything, just nothing special. It's a little pricey. I got the do'sant (a donut ice cream sandwich). It was $4.99 and the donut wasn't good at all. It was very dry and tasted like a lil debbie. I got the cookies and cream ice cream inside of the sandwich. The ice cream there isn't too bad. I think it could be creamier though. It's a little flaky. It's almost like they used 2% milk instead of heavy cream or something. It tastes like it ought to be made with something with a higher butterfat content. Everything was going a-ok until I got up to the register to pay. The cashier said "that'll be $4.99 and did you want to leave me a tip?" I went into panic mode. I was completely befuddled and shocked that he actually asked me to tip. I didn't know what to do, so I just clicked the 15% option. It only came out to around 74 cents, but it's such BAD practice to beg for a tip. This experience was very off putting. I just can't believe I was asked for a tip in such a pressure-y way. It really made me mad. And even more mad that I submitted to this tactic. It should not have happened. The quality of ice cream isn't really enough to keep me coming back, and this display of poor customer service sure didn't help. I'm not sure if I'll be back. In this case, there are a lot more choices and it's actually cheaper than the before mentioned San Francisco Treat (out of the convenience store freezer case). CREAM is located in the old Mrs. Fields Cookie space, so I suppose there's some retail continuity here. Meh. Unlike many of the people who really really love this place, I thought it wasn't that great. We stood in line for a long time and finally got to the front. The lady working was slow and wiped all of the excess ice cream on her apron, which looked grimy. I got one double chocolate chip cookie and the other side a regular chocolate chip cookie. The cookies were not special or especially good. For the ice cream, I got the mint chocolate chip, which was also, pretty mediocre ice cream. The best part about the whole trip was the price, which was $2 because I paid in cash. It is $2.50 if you pay with your card. The sandwich was hard to eat and dripped and broke and crumbled. By the end, I had two cookies stuck together and no ice cream. And I couldn't finish the ice cream because the combination of ice cream with two sugary cookies was MUCH too sweet for me and made me thirsty. There are very few seats inside the place, and because it's so crowded at all times, I don't think you would want to sit in there anyways. Tonight, I finally did! Even on a Monday night at 10pm in freezing weather, this place was packed. The line went out the door, around the corner, and then down the street. You can get plain cookies and plain ice cream here too. But, why would you settle for that when you can get ice cream sandwiched between two warm, freshly baked cookies for only $1.50? I tried the white chocolate macadamia nut cookie with vanilla cookie ice cream, and while it was good, the cookie got a little too sweet after a while. Next time, I think I'll opt for the chocolate chip cookie instead. Surprisingly, the warmth of the cookies didn't melt the ice cream. A definite plus! The cookies they serve are Otis Spunkmeyer, and while I'm a fan of the Otis, it's not very original. Even my college dining commons used to serve Otis Spunkmeyer cookies! There is always a line because the store is small and $2 ice cream sandwiches are cheap and delicious (and awful for your midsection) Fresh, hot cookies ranging from vegan snickerdoodle to double chocolate chip. Ah, Cal's answer to UCLA's Diddy Riese. I can't even begin to tell you how many businesses sought to occupy this coveted corner spot on Telegraph and Channing since I came here for undergrad. CREAM is probably the only one in recent memory that I believe will get to enjoy some longevity. Their cookies are amazing and come out nice and warm. I highly recommend the snickerdoodle and the white chocolate & macadamia nut. Maybe or maybe not together. The ice cream is sort of meh. I usually opt for vanilla because it's bound to go well with any cookie you choose, but in the future, I plan on just ordering their cookies and then heading over to Yogurt Park and make my own dessert sammy. Fun fact: CREAM actually does catering for events. We were considering them for our wedding reception and corresponded with Gus, who was super helpful and responsive. Unfortunately, since our reception site already has a catering vendor and their catering package includes a customized wedding cake, we thought it would make sense to just stick with that. But for those who want something else in lieu of the traditional wedding cake, CREAM is a pretty sweet option (no pun intended). The quote they give you includes set-up, clean-up, and break-down, and they make the sandwiches to order (you choose up to 3 different cookie flavors and 3 different ice cream flavors). Past Sunday was national ice cream day, and I had no idea. I came here to catch up with Amy J's July Ice Cream crawl. The ice here was surprising long and they only had two or three people manning the queue. Service here is friendly enough to move along the line. Seating is almost non existent with two small tables and a few chairs. I did wanted to taste few flavors before making my decision, but in the interest of keeping the line going I immediately ordered. I'm not sure how much it was since someone else treated but I think it's almost twice as much. Boo. So we walked the streets of Berkeley, enjoying the "scenery." I had heard great things about CREAM, so while in the area, we decided to brave the long line! As our wait time increased, so did the length of the line, as the trail grew further up the block. Good enough to give a 4.5 solid star rating after waiting over 30 minutes in line on a cold night. I'm a wimp when it is cold so this is saying a lot. Delicious, fresh, soft warm cookies and rich ice cream= A match made in heaven and only for $2.00! No matter the combo you choose it will all taste great and leave you in a sugar coma. You can be adventurous or keep it safe. The banana fudge walnut ice cream was incredible. I'm not a big ice cream fan but this flavor was one of the best I have had. Lots of banana flavor with the sweet chocolate fudge and the crunch from the walnut. We took half a dozen of cookies to go. They have vegan and gluten free baked goods too so nobody is left out. Brownies, bars, shakes, cones and tacos besides their famous sandwiches. The staff was friendly and super fast. Hubs used a groupon ($6. cost for $12. worth of product) and had no issues redeeming. After today's visit, I had to update my review by deducting a star. I'm usually a big fan of CREAM. Love their ice cream sammies on a hot day, but today... Sis and I dropped by before heading back home. She liked hers while mine..not so much. I ordered a turtle cookie, peanut butter cookie & salted caramel ice cream. The lady had to get the ice cream from the back and whenever she placed it onto the cookie---it was already melting! So whenever I got it-- the whole thing was falling apart. :( I still loved the peanut butter cookie, but I wasn't feeling the turtle cookie cause i tasted a bit bitter & the ice cream was liquifying way too rapidly that I couldn't enjoy it. Totally dripping everywhere. I've realized the whole thing was way too sweet as well so I'm not really that into CREAM anymore. =/ read more

FINALLY a new place opening up on South Side that ISN'T a yogurt place. After Yogurtland moved in, every new establishment in Berkeley has been a remake of it, with Pinkberry to open its doors soon. However, CREAM (Cookies Rule Everything Around Me...awesome acronym) is a concept out of the ordinary that I've only seen at UCLA. I love the fact that they have such a huge variety in cookies, and even more variety in ice cream. Although I do wish they had more flavors that appeal to my taste (such as blueberry or rocky road), they're here to cater to the greater UC Berkeley student community, and not just me. I ordered a sandwich with a huge scoop of cherry vanilla ice cream in between two fresh out of the oven, moist, soft, and delicious rocky road cookies. Some people have complained that their cookies were too hard, but I guess it really depends on how long they've had them out for. Being a new place, I'm sure it's tough for them to predict how many cookies to make so that they don't dry up too fast, but they'll get the hang of it soon. Two things that I would complain about. First of all, everything was just too sweet for my taste. Don't get me wrong; it was an amazing experience, but just such a huge sugar rush at one time. The other thing is the cashier was a bit clueless at times. I handed him $2, and he asked me for $.50. I thought it was because they were out of change, but he just happened to drop one of my dollars and insisted that it was my fault. Only after about a minute of assuring him that I paid $2, he looked on the ground and saw the other dollar. It happens from time to time, but his attitude was a bit defensive. I feel like if I keep coming back here, my food baby might start to develop. However, it's hard to resist when you end up with fingers covered in ice cream at the end of such an experience. Btw, my friend was the 4th person to attempt a 3 layer sandwich this past weekend. Owned it like a true boss. read more

i mean, what's not to love? CREAM is a 510 cult classic with lines wrapped around the building, but with all that pushed aside...let's be real, who doesn't like fresh baked cookies sandwiching a scoop of creamy and cold ice cream? if you like in the bay area, you've gotta go here. that's all. i'm not even a sweets person and i love going here when i'm in berkeley. the line may look long, but it moves very quickly. don't expect to be in line longer than 10 minutes even when it's 30 deep. read more

I've walked by this shop so many times but never stopped to give it a try because the line is always wrapped around the building but this time, I stopped and waited in line. The line moved by fairly fast considering how far back I was in line. As you inch closer to the door, you can smell the fresh baked cookies and you find your mouth watering a little. I got the matcha green tea ice cream sandwiched between a oatmeal raisin cookie and chocolate chip cookie and it was heaven!
