I don't usually write reviews but I had to after my friend's wedding. I actually went with my friend and her husband to the tasting and the food there was amazing. The owner promised us big portions with refills, everything served hot, and the same quality as the restaurant. So we really thought we were in good hands. However, on the actual wedding day, it was the complete opposite. The portions were tiny, definitely not enough for a full table, and of course there were no refills like they promised. Most of the food came out cold and a lot of guests didn't finish their plates because it just wasn't good. Both sides of the family were disappointed, which was heartbreaking, because no one wants the food to be the bad memory from a wedding. To make things worse, when my friend emailed them afterward with everyone's feedback, they never responded. No apology, no explanation, nothing. This is very unprofessional and irresponsible. Based on what we experienced, I honestly can't recommend them for a wedding. The promises at the tasting and what they actually delivered were two completely different things. After two years of planning a COVID wedding, Tumi and her team worked on my wedding during the Labor Day weekend in 2021. They were so gracious and shifted their team when our bartender did not show up. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to serve drinks at our wedding! In general, the food was good but we heard from our guests that we didn't have enough towards the end of the buffet line. The 100-degree weather was not in our favor as well as the food wilted quickly as it sat in the sun. Therefore, quality was compromised as well. I now have a favorite go-to place for affordable and delicious catering when it comes to Thai Food when planning a large event to feed a good number of people and Thai Rice Spoon Catering is that place. Based out of West Berkeley's newest Thai restaurant Thai Table, Thai Rice Spoon was brought to my attention through a work colleague who managed to find an affordable caterer when looking for a vendor for a work function, in which we needed a large amount of food within a rather quick turn around, three weeks. Low and behold, through her search came Thai Rice Spoon Catering, which owner Tumi Supanee was kind enough to respond within twenty-four hours after she reached out to them via their email address. After informing her of our plight, Tumi suggested that a few colleagues head over to Thai Table to sample the food that her busy husband and Chef Andrew McGee prepares for catering and restaurant orders alike. Supanee is not only the owner of Thai Rice Spoon Catering and Thai Table but also co-owns Orchids Thai in Oakland, and McGee is co-owner of Berkeley's well-loved Albatross Pub. After sampling no fewer than eight dishes such as their curry chicken and basil eggplant, at a fifteen percent discount, we met up with Tumi at her restaurant and she explains what she could cook for us for our party which was scheduled to take place a mere week later. She guided us through their menu and what they could provide for our budget of 1,500 dollars for a party of about a hundred people. In the end, we decided to go with three large trays of their Pad Thai with Tofu ($119.95 each), two large trays of their Pad Ke Mao Chicken Large ($109 each), two large trays of their Yellow Curry Chicken ($109 each), two large trays of their Vegan Basil Eggplant Tofu ($103.95 each), one large tray of Pik king Green Bean with Beef ($109), one large tray of their Papaya Salad ($99.00), one large tray of their Jasmine Rice ($30.00), and one large tray of their Brown Rice ($40). With all of this food delivery was a very affordable $39 which was remarkable since the food came across the Bay Bridge at rush hour. Leading up to our party, Tumi was nice enough to keep our team updated on the status of our order and she offered us ninety complimentary paper plates and utensils, which I gladly took advantage of since I didn't know if we had enough supplies for our party and extra is always appreciated. We scheduled our order to arrive at 4 p.m. on the day of our party and their delivery driver Tom was right on time. After checking over everything they brought us and verifying that everything that our order was correct we were ready to place their foil tray into the chafing dishes that we had on our own. They do charge extra for set up and display in addition to serving, but we decided to keep things simple tonight and did everything ourselves. When all was said and done our total bill came out to a very reasonable $1,450.00 for roughly 100 diners. All of our guests couldn't stop raving about the food and how good everything tasted. If we could change one thing about our order was that we shouldn't have ordered an extra tray of Pad Thai as our attendees wanted to try the huge variety of dishes we offered and they devoured food really fast and therefore couldn't finish off all of the noodles we ordered. In fact, we should have just order two trays of both the Papaya Salad and the Pik king Green Bean with Beef because as luck would have it, those two trays ran out first. Also, I'm not sure if Jasmine Rice is a popular option in today's health conscious world as the Brown Rice was eaten like crazy while in the end I had a huge tray of dry white rice. But then again, different people have different tastes and you never know how things are going to be eaten in large groups until the party is over. Would I order from Thai Rice Spoon Catering? In a San Francisco minute, especially since they also serve classic Thai appetizers like Spring Rolls and Chicken Satay. I ordered a couple of dishes to taste test and they were all so delicious! I ordered 6 small bites and 4 entrees and my guests said they were all individually so good!
