My sister was looking to find some vegan options for her retirement party and asked me to find anyone who could provide good spring rolls. I had very poor luck after taste-testing a few places in San Jose. Thankfully my sister found Thai Rice Spoon Catering in Oakland! Just from looking at their website photos, I told her she HAD to choose them for her event. If you spend over $200, they deliver! Yay! On the day of the event, the delivery dude arrived early and was proficient in helping to set up the tables. He was extremely polite, efficient and very helpful with his advice and suggestions on serving the food. He made sure the sterno cans were lit at the proper time in order that they would last to the end of the party and keep the food warm. Not only was the food hot (temperature-wise), but was very flavorful, and colorful to look at. Everything was beautifully appetizing to the eye!!! My sister ordered trays of pad thai, basil eggplant tofu, mango shrimp, tofu cashew nut, yellow curry vegan, brown rice, fresh shrimp spring rolls, and crispy vegetarian egg rolls. My fiance and I are DIY-ing our wedding at The General's Residence and were deciding between buffet style or family style dinners. Luckily, Thai Rice Spoon offers both options! Tumi gave us amazingly priced quotes for both options for us to compare, including detailed breakdown of services and cost for each. She was so patient and easy to work with. They catered our wedding in Palo Alto last year, but I just stumbled onto their receipt and remembered that I meant to leave a review. They were ridiculously inexpensive catering even for a buffet dinner, especially for trucking down from Berkeley. They had plenty of delicious options for vegetarians and meat eaters, and we were left with lots of leftovers. We also hired their crew for a couple of extra hours to help with set up and clean up. We got a bunch of compliments from our guests specifically about the food. They were far better than what I was expecting in food quality and quantity and service quality. I had tons of concerns in advance: the food would be cold coming down an hour from Berkeley, the food wouldn't be good and the service would be bad considering how inexpensive it was, etc. All of my concerns proved to be pointless. They were fantastic and I will gladly hire them again in Palo Alto for any personal party in need of catering food for 50+ people. When it came to my wedding, I was a thousand times more stressed about the food service than I was about pretty much any other decision. My partner found Thai Rice Spoon through Yelp, and my god. Tumi and her team are true All Stars in every exuberant sense of the phrase. In the run up to the event we were in regular communication, even as Tumi was in the middle of opening up a new restaurant (shoutout Thai Table in Berkeley). She referred us to an excellent dish rental company (shoutout AM Party Rentals) and, most incredibly, changed her entire catering setup to accommodate our venue's requests for no Sterno. Her team hit the ground running when they got to the venue and were invaluable in the setup, run of show, and breakdown. This is a bit overdue. Our wedding was August 11th (2018) but our contact with this caterer started in May or June. In that time, Tumi, the owner, was the sweetest, most welcoming, and most helpful person I've ever worked with. If she were writing a review for me, those adjectives would probably be indecisive, high-maintenance, and unorganized. But not once did I ever get even the slightest hint from her that I was difficult to deal with. We had a wedding of about 90 people (though it seems like there ended up being a few strays) so 90 people is what we quoted. Nobody likes to talk price but I think the exceptional quality and value is worth mentioning. So for 90 people, we had appetizers and a dinner buffet. We chose 3 apps at 3 bites per person, 5 entrees buffet style paid extra for two staff members for 7 hours. They walked around passing out the appetizers and managed the whole food set up from start to finish. They even took care of cutting the cake. We paid extra for the salmon panang curry and I highly recommend it as well as literally everything else on the menu. Our guests were raving about the food. The fact that this whole operation cost $2900 blows my mind. And that's TOTAL. Not before tax and gratuity, not plus delivery fee. That's the entire bill. That's incredible. This experience with Tumi and Thai Rice Spoon Catering literally makes me want to find an excuse to throw another party so I can hire them again. Mind still blown. read more

This review is for a 120 person wedding on March 31 2018. If I could give her a 100 stars, I would! Tumi is the sweetest person you will ever meet! She has a strong passion for food and will go above and beyond for you. I am so happy I went with Thai Rice Spoon. We are not Thai but we love her food. Love at first... tasting! Her food on the day of the event tasted like the tasting! So many people including some of my hard-to-please relatives loved the food too!!! Reasons why we love Thai Rice Spoon: -Outstanding Customer Service -Small Business -High Quality Food (but still had that nice home cooked taste to it!) -Price within Budget My fiance and I researched and contacted several catering businesses including several from our venue's preferred vendor's list. Unfortunately, there was barely a selection for Asian catering from the preferred vendor's list. By the end of our event, our venue manager said Thai Rice Spoon was so amazing that they were going to add them onto their preferred vendor's list for future weddings! Tumi is very prompt with her emails. She also called a couple weeks before the wedding to make sure we had everything we wanted on the menu. We scheduled a walk-though of our venue with Tumi a week before the wedding to let familiarize with the venue, when and where the happy hour and reception bar would take place. I also gave her and her team copies of the event timeline. For our wedding day, we had passed appetizers and table appetizers during happy hour on the patio; reception was upstairs in the hall and the bar was on the deck. The food was presented so beautifully. Our catering manager was Bui and she was hard working and 100% amazing! Bui always used her best judgement and when she had any questions, none of those questions were for the bride. 0:) Even though Tumi had 3 events on the day of our wedding, she commuted between all three events all night. She showed up many times to make sure everything was in order. About two hours after reception, we ran out of cups at the bar! That was my bad as I miscalculated how much some people would drink. They were chugging the alcohol! Since we ran out of cups, people were doing shots with my tealight holders! Tumi noticed and went to the store to buy us more cups for the bar!! What a life saver!! Tumi is very accommodating. If you have a particular budget or diet, let her know and she can personalize the menu for you! My venue did not have a full functioning kitchen, only a warming kitchen, but Tumi was able to accommodate that and everything was still super tasty! At the time of my wedding, Thai Rice Spoon did not include rentals into their pricing. The price included food for happy hour, buffet reception, and serve ware for buffet. We also added tea and coffee. Since it was my first time hosting an event, I was very nervous about renting out my own linens, drinkware, silverware, and plateware. I preferred if the caterer included it into the pricing. Tumi explained that she could rent items for us for it would be an extra 15% on top of the rentals price. She recommended I do rentals on my own. -glad I did! doing rentals was actually a breeze and I had nothing to worry about! also p.s. rental prices are pretty much the same all around the bay area, just be sure to go to their warehouses to check quality! Thai Rice Spoon team was great! The food was truly amazing and was presented beautifully. Customer service from Tumi and the team was outstanding. We didn't even have any left overs! Their restaurant location has now become our go to spot since we love the food so much! Tumi was very sweet and was flexible when we couldn't make up our minds about how many appetizers to order. We have gotten numerous compliments about the food at our wedding. Tumi made us plates of food and brought it to our table before everyone else. I was given the last minute responsibility today of deciding on a caterer for a same day event. I called 2 Thai places: One was located close to the event venue in SoMa, but very difficult to deal with because I asked for suggestions over the phone on what dishes would be best to feed 30 people and I didn't get a clear answer so I felt inclined to guess about the best dishes to order. However, Thai Rice Spoon Catering sent a nice quote with pictures of the food plus suggestions for what appetizers to add. At the end of the quote was the name Tumi and a number with a notification that I could call or text. (I like that she gives all those options to contact her and she actually answers the phone herself!) Tumi answered all the questions I had and she was so absolutely pleasant to speak with. She seemed to say every word with a smile...even with such a last minute order. She also updated the quote and emailed it to me immediately while we were on the phone with a very convenient "Pay Invoice" button within the email. It really helped in verifying that the order was correct. I really love this awesome, real-time way of transacting. They delivered as expected (from Oakland, btw), and everyone loved the spread. We just had our daughter's 40th birthday party catered by Thai Rice Spoon. They were great to deal with, and did a very nice job at a very fair price. The set up was at our daughter's home in Berkeley, outdoors, and was very pretty. The servers were there during the entire event and were really gracious and nice. Since there were a lot of young children attending, we had a fairly simple food selection; everything was well prepared, nicely presented, and good for both parents and kids. The most artistic creation was vegetable rolls, which were very pretty. For a more adult group, one might want to order a few more items of that sort. Two notes: (1) have a little patience when communicating; Tumi runs the show herself as well as running the restaurant so you may not get the instant within tne seconds email return that we have come to expect these days. In hindsight, we had no idea what we were doing and it would've been impossible without Tumi. Tumi went out of her way to figure out the right price, menu, and support staff we needed to cater our wedding. Plus, there was quite a bit left over that they set out with to-go containers so people could keep snacking throughout the dancing portion. Amazing! Tumi also made sure that my partner and I got to eat, first by making a tray of food and bringing it to us before the reception, and later by having plates made up and saved for us when we were ready to eat.
