The gold plating decor and dark vibe gives a luxurious feeling. Service is ok.. they give the feeling they are not paid enough and don't wanna be there. However, the barista lady is friendly! The pastries are good but the coffee and lattes are what make it here. It's a small cafe but there are some seats to do work. None of the pastries and baked good are made in house, and they are delivered from the other commissary. It's a normal practice most bakery expansions do. The kouign aman was dry and not my cup of tea. I do like their croissants! The savory one is my favorite. Another new hot and new brunch spot has popped up, and I had super high hopes since it's always so busy and has good reviews. Came here with my husband, our son, and my husband's grandma (who was visiting from out of town) on a weekday when school was out, and we got a few items to share: Yuzu egg salad sando Ham and Swiss sando Upper crust Chocolate chip cookie Chocolate croissant I would have gotten a drink to try except my husband had already made espresso drinks at home that day before coming here. True to form, the pastries there are creative, varied, and delicious. Not overly sweet, but just "right". The team here is friendly and well versed with each item they sell. I look forward to trying out new items/releases and the matcha tonic. My only issue has to do with The Dean itself. I used to go to the original Craftsman and Wolves in the Mission when I lived closer, so I was happy to see they opened a location in Mountain View. Funny enough, I've passed by San Antonio Street so many times and never noticed it was there. A hidden gem for sure. I stopped in around 1 p.m., which might have been too late because the pastry selection was pretty limited by then. We ended up getting a regular croissant and the avocado toast. The croissant was classic and well done, and the avocado toast was loaded with different ingredients--layers of flavor and texture that made it much more interesting than the standard café version. I also ordered a chai, which tasted good but came out lukewarm. I wish it had been hotter to match the chilly afternoon. I'll definitely come back, but next time I'm going earlier in the day for a full spread of pastries. read more

I visited the Craftsman and Wolves in the city many years back when I read about it in an article listing the top bakeries in the city. I remember being very impressed and was therefore excited when I saw that they were opening a location in Mountain View. While I don't consider myself a true croissant connoisseur as I still haven't taken a croissant making class and therefore don't know what goes into the craft of making these lovely pastries, I do consider myself reasonably knowledgeable to the point that I know that if you are going to be setting up shop down the street from Midwife then you really need to blow me away. I must say that I was very impressed. These people do know how to make a good croissant. I also love how they serve up savory morning pastries, which is something I don't see at a lot of patisseries. I also tried some of their dessert items, which are definitely pricey but are also quite delicious. I do have to say though that my track record of not being impressed with a bakery's signature item continues with Craftsman and Wolves. I tried the rebel within and I really wasn't impressed. There was something interesting about a soft-boiled egg being baked into a muffin but the muffin itself was so dry that I didn't really care for it. To each their own I guess. I also have to add that the service here is quite nice. The staff is really welcoming and friendly and they really make it a point to describe any menu item in detail if you have any questions. It's quite sad but I can't remember the last time I gave a shoutout for the service in a review. I definitely enjoyed my experience here and the fact they have an expansive menu is the main reason why I will continue to visit. One of the reasons why I don't really go to Midwife anymore is that they have the same menu all the time and don't really change anything. Rebel within has always been C&W's premier item, and what brought many folks to love savory muffins. With its jammy egg, it ate like a hardy breakfast, but the rest of the muffin is quite dense. The savoriness of the dough is great however, it needs to be reheated and that's hard to do thoroughly while keeping the egg jammy. The meatball croissant: the meatball was really tough and cold meat does not go well with buttery flaky pastry. It left a greasy, cold fat mouth feel that was not very attractive. Triple chocolate croissant, very good. If I were a chocolate lover, I would order that quite often. The triple chocolate comes from the chocolate croissant dough, the filling, and then the chocolate drizzle on top. The streusel muffin was disappointing. It was too heavy on streusel, so much that it was overbearing. The muffin itself tasted gluten-free, which meant flat (not fluffy) and weirdly moist with not a lot of flavor. I can count the number of berries and fruit chunks in the muffin on one hand. The savory scone with thyme and some other herbs was very good. Would order again and eat, heated. Jalapeño twist was lackluster. I thought it would be better than something I would get from Paris baguette, but it wasn't. The top was washed with simple syrup and then the middle had a very small line of what seemed like jalapeño jam. Even with Parmesan sprinkled on top. They were busy around lunchtime on a Sunday. But service was very amiable and polite as it took me some time to figure out what I wanted. I originally intended to get a sandwich, but decided to get the lion's head stack instead and it certainly didn't disappoint! I'm not usually a fan of ginger and wood ear, but I totally appreciated the meatball that came with the stack. I would totally eat those meatballs in the more traditional "lion's head" serving. The surrounding croissant was also very flaky and good. Additionally, we ordered the triple chocolate croissant to go, along with a mocha and cold brew. Somehow the rich chocolate flavor in the mocha still ended up being very subtle, but I appreciated the flavor, not overpowering. My partner enjoyed the cold brew. To me, the sourness turned me off a little bit more, but it had a nice kick. I ate the triple chocolate croissant at home, and it was very chocolatey and very flaky. It's too bad inside seating is limited. It was a bit chilly today, and while we luckily did get to sit inside, tables were hard to find. It lacked flavor and just didn't live up to the hype that every says. I've had this in other locations and it was okay, but honestly it isn't the best. I think it just looks appealing but doesn't live up to the taste. The strawberry peach kouign looked great, but the texture was soggy and not at all flavorful. I thought this would stand out but it didn't. It just looked good but didn't taste good. The triple chocolate croissant was also a miss unfortunately. My friend and I got croissant egg sandos and I got an iced dulce de leche latte. Sando was good, wish there was something more sour/vinegary to offset the richness of the egg. I tried the gluten-free biscone (cross between a biscuit and scone) and the gluten-free chocolate financier. I loved both! This is a newer, developing area in MV and I'm glad to see the diversity of culinary options popping up. This branch has some indoor and outdoor seating. We parked on the street a block down and walked over. Coffee is good. They had a blackberry almond syrup that added great flavor to my latte. Ordered a handful of pastries: coffee blackberry charlotte, malted milk ball stone, and their seasonal tart. Each pastry was just okay for me. I'm not sure if it's because they're not as fresh with the delivery from their headquarters or if my palette has changed. The charlotte and stone were pretty gelatinous , which is not my favorite. That texture made the flavors a lot more dull. I like my pastries to be softer and fuller of flavor. The tart was good but the crust was so crumbly and dry. It was kind of like eating crusty cardboard. I'd come here for the coffee but I prefer the pastries at places like Alexander's Patisserie. read more

I had very high hopes for this place as I've enjoyed some of their pastries from farmers markets in Palo Alto, but was not impressed with my time here. It was very crowded when I went on a weekend morning, which is not surprising. I can handle a line, but I felt that service here was not moving very effectively or efficiently. Now for the pastries drinks themselves. Coffee was good, but took quite a long time to get out. I tried two types of the rebel within, something I had enjoyed at the farmers market as a special treat, but found that the ones here were not as good. Pros: 1) Traditional Croissant was 9.7/10, amazing! Buttery, flaky, the right amount of crisp exterior paired with a fluffy interior. If you've ever been to Backhaus, I'd say it's comparable!! 2) Levain Batard (Sourdough Loaf) was 9.5/10 delicious. I had to grab a bite of it right away because I am obsessed with sourdough! It's such a classic loaf with multiple purposes. The crust was a perfect brown and you can see the crumb texture nice and bubbly. 3) Lion Head Stack was 9.7/10, so fun! Think -- gyoza filling meatball on a crispy flaky buttery croissant!! Freakin' delightful! If you want something flavorful and different, you gotta get this one! 4) Honey Lavender Latte was 9.7/10, balanced. This is one of those drinks where it can go from floral to potpourri real quick, but shout out to the barista for making it taste so well balanced!! Cons: 1) Waiting in line was a bit awkward. I hope they set up some sort of rope divider system so that it's easier to line up. The configuration doesn't flow very well because you're sort of waiting diagonally between some seats and the front counter. I first fell in love with the Rebel Within around 10 years ago, and though they've been at various farmer's markets, scheduling has made it hard for me to get their pastries regularly, so I was really excited when they opened in Mountain View recently! There is a new(ish) bakery in town and their soft opening was this Monday (June 2)! They are joining Amici and (soon-to-open) Junbi, so The Dean and its guest parking will undoubtedly experience some traffic from visitors craving for pizza from Amici, a sweet drink from Junbi, or pastries and coffee from Craftsman and Wolves. You know you are in good hands when you park in the underground parking lot and can smell the sweet and savory scent of the pastries all the way from down there. That smell only intensifies as you walk up the stairs and make your way into Craftsman and Wolves! I'm so glad that C&W finally opened a location in the South Bay! Walking into C&W brought me back to my time in the city when I would often visit their bakery in the Mission! It's been years since I've been back (mainly because I don't want to make the long trek all the way to SF and I often sleep in on the weekends, so I end up missing them at the farmer's market on Cal Ave). Now, they're conveniently located in one of the busiest places in Mountain View (maybe second to DTMTV, but with Movement and other new businesses coming in, it might rival that of DTMTV). So, I really have no excuse to not visit them, which can be very dangerous for my fitness goals and waistline. Anything sweet or buttery is my Achilles heal and I find it next to impossible to pass up an opportunity to indulge in them, especially when you can smell all that goodness as you pass by. How can you say no to that?! I certainly can't. As I walked into the bakery during their soft opening, I wanted to eat everything in their display case! The croissants, muffins, and even cakes! Alas, my eyes are much hungrier than my stomach, so I narrowed it down to three. 1. Rebel Within--This is C&W's signature piece! It's what they are known for! If you can only order one thing from this place, this is it! Order this! It's a muffin-looking pastry that has more of a cake texture than a muffin one. On the inside, you'll be pleasantly surprised with an egg with its yolk oozing out as you bite into! The egg is complemented with sausage and onions on the inside. If you heat it for 45 seconds in the microwave, it tastes even better. And if you have more time, I highly recommend air frying it at 375°F for 5 minutes (microwave for 30 seconds before if you want it to be warmer)! You won't be disappointed by the crunchiness of the outside followed by the warm, soft, pillowy texture of the inside. It's perfection! 2. Blueberry Delight--If you love blueberries and lemons, this muffin is the perfect treat for you! This immediately caught my eyes because the outside top part has an interesting cloud-like texture and the bottom part looked like they were quite generous with the blueberries. I don't usually have high hopes for blueberry muffins (despite loving them so much) because they're drier than they look at bakeries. Needless to say, I am so happy that I took the leap of faith because one bite into it made me feel like I was in blueberry muffin heaven! I air fried it at 375°F for 4.5 minutes, and I'm elated that I took the time to do that. Once you bite into it, the crumbly top melts into your mouth, as notes of blueberries and lemon zests burst into your taste buds. As if that wasn't enough, both flavors are enhanced with salted butter. I know, I know...salted butter?! Sounds strange, right? Trust me, the sweet and savory makes it even more addicting and you'll be coming back for more. 3. Matcha Snickerdoodle Cookie--After the first two, we thought that this would be the perfect way to end our adventure at C&W. Unfortunately, we were left pretty disappointed. Again, we air fried the cookie, but once you bite into it, both the matcha and cinnamon flavors are so light that you're left feeling confused. What did I just bite into? What flavor is this cookie again? I was going to forego this, but the associate at the front "highly recommended" this, and since I often fomo over food, I didn't want to regret my decision later. Now, I regret ordering it because it wasn't worth the calories, much less the price tag. Overall, this cute little bakery is worth a visit! Whether you're catching up with an old friend or meeting up with some colleagues, it's a nice reprieve from the mundane work day and wonderful way to treat yourself whenever you need a pick-me-up! It's also a bonus that they have underground parking down below, but with all the businesses coming into this building, finding parking might prove to be a challenge. read more
