This might be the last time we visit a restaurant that has only been open for a week, and still trying to get the kinks out. That being said, some of the issues here go beyond that. Strap yourself in, this is long.
Our visit started with a front-of-house staff member yelling hello so loudly when we approached her, that it was over the top and awkward. When I tried engaging in some small talk with her, I was ignored. She came off as a little fake as a result.
I can confirm what others said that something is up with the tables and chairs - as soon as I sat down, something just felt off, either the table is too low or too high. I'm 5'9", so maybe they sized these for people who are taller or shorter, I'm not sure?
We ordered the wings as an appetizer, but not before asking the waitress if she could tell us which sauce was like "Buffalo" and how spicy it really is. She went to the kitchen to ask and came back saying they weren't that hot. The menu boldly describes them with a strong emphasis on "crispy" - I was excited to see this, as most places don't leave them in the fryer long enough. I'm from Buffalo originally, so I know how wings should be prepared. We were stunned and disappointed when they came out and were 1) very spicy and 2) some of the more rubbery wings I have ever had. We each ate two of them and decided to take the rest home to throw in the oven to finish cooking them and add some of the crispiness that was completely lacking.
My wife ordered the shrimp n grits and I decided to get the osso bucco - highlighted as the signature dish. Entrees come with either a salad or daily soup, we opted for the soup as it was tomato basil, which sounded good to us. The front of house manager stopped by a few minutes later to inform us that they were out of soup, and would we like an appetizer, such as the pork rinds - we said sure, let's try those. A minor disappointment, but we would get to try another dish at least.
The pork rinds arrived and they were not good. They were rock hard, so crunchy as to be inedible, I nearly chipped a tooth on 3 of them before I gave up. They were served with a dipping sauce which was tasty, but it was served cold which wasn't as appetizing as if it was warmed up a bit.
At this point we're feeling kind of down on things, not off to a good start. Then the main courses arrived. As soon as they set down the shrimp n grits, I could tell it looked off. Where was the sausage? We found some small crumbles in there. My wife tasted it and recoiled immediately. I tried it as well and we both wondered, what is that strange flavor? Turmeric? Lowery's seasoning? It was very heavy-handed and just terrible. The grits were overcooked and mushy. My wife sent it back and the waitress returned and said the owner tasted it and said it "might" have been over-seasoned, but it didn't sound like he/she really owned up to it being so bad. We have had probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 different versions of this dish over the years, in Richmond and elsewhere, and never anything that tasted like this. So my wife ordered a burger, cooked medium, and watched me eat my osso bucco.
My first impression of the osso bucco was, this is good - the meat was cooked properly, not dry, and it was surrounded by a nice bed of risotto and vegetables, with plenty of sauce. The problem was the sauce itself. It had a very prominent white-wine flavor to it, much stronger than it should have been. This could only mean two things: it hadn't cooked long enough to reduce down and burn off the alcohol, or they used something cheap like cooking wine.
It took a long time for my wife's burger to come out. A re-fire should jump to the front of the line and be out ASAP. When it finally arrived, guess what, not medium! It was well done, and somewhat charred. Unbelieveable. The manager who brought it out said "sorry about that" but it didn't feel very sincere, and he took no time to discuss the shrimp n grits or get any direct feedback from us. He also didn't mention that they were comping her entree, we didn't find that out until the bill came. Very strange not to mention that as part of the apology.
I should also mention we saw two other patrons order the shrimp n grits, and it was amusing to watch one lady take her first bite and recoil in the same manner. In between each bite, she was downing a lot of water. Another woman at a nearby table left her entire bowl untouched. My wife happened to see her in the restroom and she described hers as "way too salty" and the second one they brought her was just as bad, she ended up eating a plate of fries for her dinner.
Clearly, this place has major issues with food quality. Who decided these dishes were edible? Is the head chef tasting the sauces and food as they are prepared? Are dishes even being checked before being sent out? It's beyond bad for all 5 dishes we tried to fail in one manner or another. When a replacement dish is sent out, should it not be perfect? read more
