Taking a break of a streak of about 20 breakfasts in a row at our favorite place (Villa Basque Cafe and Deli), we picked The Cracker Box for our family of four. Even though it seems a little small and cramped for our comfort level, after so many times driving by and seeing diners waiting in the entry and spilling out onto the sidewalk. This usually means (1) you'll have to wait a while, but (2) the food is worth the wait. So it wasn't surprising that the the entry way was jammed when we arrived.
Normally a restaurant has a hostess with a clipboard or sign to seat yourself, etc., but there after we waited a while, we didn't see any attempts made to determine who was to be seated next. We were barely even greeted. Anyway, the staff looked busy and rushed around chaotically with several tables empty and uncleared. I would say our comfort and enjoyment level at this point was pretty low but we waited patiently and were seated eventually.
Onto the food. The offerings didn't seem too diverse. There were a few standard breakfasts on the menu, including maybe eight types of omelets, pancakes, and french toast. Also on the menu were burgers and fries.
I ordered for a bacon, tomato, spinach and swiss omelet, which was not very flavorful despite the grilled tomato and swiss cheese. The swiss cheese was uneven, and you could tell a bite with cheese was more flavorful than a bite without it. I was surprised that inside the folded omelet was a strip of bacon, darkly cooked and dry, not the melt-in-your-mouth crumbly bacon normally put inside omelets. Therefore, not every bite of the omelet had bacon. The potatoes were red potatoes, skin-on, and boiled or baked and then sliced and mixed with tomato. But they but did not seem to be fried at all. The texture was very watery and mushy, not crisp or smooth. Furthermore, Oddly, the potatoes did not appear to be seasoned in the least so lots of salt and pepper were required, but I really couldn't find enjoyment in them. The rye toast fortunately was buttery and sweet.
My spouse ordered a nicely flavored feta, olive, tomato and spinach omelet. I wish I had ordered this. The olives had a lot of flavor, more than the olives you find in the grocery store, and the quantities of feta and tomato looked generous. The children were happy with a burger (which was formed by hand, not a hockey puck burger from the freezer of some food delivery service) and fries, and the other child had a short stack of pancakes (2) thick and fluffy looking, and as large as a dinner plate across. The coffee with cold cream and orange juice were very good, freshly squeezed.
Maybe the owners read Yelp because absolutely nothing on the menu was greasy or glistening at all. In fact, based on the lack of seasoning and frying of the potatoes, I would say they should use some butter and fry their potatoes and not serve sliced boiled potatoes without seasoning them. Really. The place smelled like freshly brewed coffee not of grease. I think some of the older reviews are not relevant at this time (at least in the breakfast crowd). read more
