Unfortunately, Gateway Cafe gave me absolutely nothing but attitude. We hadn't even sat down. We walked up and were told there was a 35+ minute wait, which is fine, restaurants get busy. But the hostess looked me up and down and then hit us with, "leaning more on the +, 30 minutes." Like okay girl, why are we doing all that? We jokingly offered her $100 to let us in earlier and she goes, "No, I'll take your money after you eat the food though." And honestly the joke would've landed if the energy before that wasn't already so weird. At that point we literally just left. And what makes the whole thing even more ironic is that Gateway Cafe markets itself as woman-owned and LGBTQ-friendly, but the experience did not feel particularly welcoming or inclusive. The clientele was overwhelmingly older and white, and as someone who clearly did not fit into that demographic, I felt very aware of it. There was a palpable feeling of being looked at rather than welcomed. Obviously, I can't speak for anyone else's experience, but this was mine. And I'm sorry, but if I'm already uncomfortable before I've even ordered a mimosa, why exactly would I stay and spend my money? The food could be incredible. I wouldn't know. A local favorite and quickly becoming a must try Tahoe destination. the Getaway is being featured more and more as THE place for breakfast so naturally I had to try. Wait time was an hour so be warned, it is popular. I'm on my own quest for the best eggs Benedict and needed to try this one. It was very good but the true star for me was the potato hash! It was rolled up, had a perfect outside crust and inside was soft. This might not be for everyone as my husband thought it seemed under done but I thought it was perfect! What a fantastic breakfast spot!! This is a little out of the way from the main South Lake Tahoe downtown but is well worth the short drive or would be great to hit on the way in / out. I ordered the deluxe eggs benedict, which they kindly added chorizo to in lieu of Canadian bacon; my boyfriend ordered the sausage, biscuits and gravy; and we shared the coconut french toast because we just really wanted to try it! The servings are large but we ate nearly everything, and needless to say we were stuffed! I absolutely loved the chorizo--might be my favorite from a restaurant. The French toast was nearly perfect too, as it was thick and soft / moist but not soggy. I loved the coconut but feel the normal French toast would've been great too. Everything tasted fresh and house-made, as they say it is. The staff was incredibly nice and I believe the owner was at the front hosting people, which goes to show the service, thought and effort that goes into this place! We stopped at Getaway Cafe on our way to a day trip to Bodie, and it was such a great find! From the moment we walked in, everyone was incredibly kind and welcoming. The owner was so sweet, she sat us down and took the time to make a little small talk with us, which made the experience feel so warm and personal. Bailey was our waitress, and she was absolutely lovely! I had a classic mimosa and the Eggs Benedict, substituting bacon for the Canadian bacon, with a side of extra-crispy house potatoes. The biscuits were very dense and hard, not fluffy and light. The gravy was not aweful but it tasted more like chorizo instead of breakfast sausage. Getaway Cafe was recommended to us by my brother in law and sister in law. They visited before during their trips to Lake Tahoe. We checked it out this morning for breakfast. They had the banner for best brunch 2025 hanging nicely. Diane, the owner, put us on the waitlist and also showed us to our table. Very warm welcome! We started off with coffee. Hubby had the Chorizo Quesadilla and enjoyed it very much. The portion was enough for 2 meals. Sure enough, he took half home. I had the Coconut French Toast, the small portion. What a fantastic way to start our Lake Tahoe vacation! We had a group of 8, and despite being very busy, the wait was only less than 20 minutes. The staff was friendly, organized, and kept everything moving smoothly. We enjoyed sitting on the shaded patio while we waited for our table. The food was outstanding. This is our second time here, but first time back in 7 years. It was just as good as I remembered. We arrived in Saturday around 8am and it wasn't busy at all, which was really nice. There is a lot of parking. The inside is a little small, but it's super cozy. We were seated right away. All of the waitresses were super friendly and helpful. I ordered the Morning After with sausage. It was so good. The potatoes were seasoned perfectly. The biscuit was nice and fluffy and the sausage gravy was super flavorful. My husband ordered the eggs benedict and he really liked it. We were in and out which was nice as we wanted to beat the traffic back down the hill to get home. I stopped by The Getaway Cafe with my wife and two friends, and the hospitality here is truly top-notch. Our server, Carmen, was incredibly kind and gave us some great menu suggestions. To make the experience even better, the owner, Diane, actually came by our table to introduce herself. It's always really nice to see an owner who is that attentive to her customers and invested in the dining experience. For my meal, I ordered the breakfast burrito which, as you can see from the photo, comes wrapped in a great spinach tortilla and served with sour cream, and salsa. It was loaded with egg, chorizo, green and red peppers, onions, and pepper jack cheese. I was a bit surprised, though, because even with so many distinct, flavorful ingredients packed inside, those flavors didn't quite come through. The pepper jack cheese was just a little too heavy-handed and ended up overpowering everything else in the burrito. The other minor issue was that I had specifically ordered hashbrowns with my meal, but I was served the breakfast potatoes instead. They were still perfectly crisp and seasoned well, but just wasn't exactly what I asked for. Overall, the atmosphere and the service made it a great experience, but I just wish the burrito had a better balance with less cheese, and that the sides hadn't gotten mixed up. This was such a unique find outside the bustling South Lake scene and well worth the quick jaunt to get there. We were greeted by a sweet lady who happened to be the owner, playing host and seating customers. Upon seating us, we were informed of the specials and notified of their homemade, popular chorizo. I immediately knew I had to order a dish that featured it, and the omelette was my choice. Cheesy, flavorful, packed with veggies and chorizo, encompassed with eggs made for a perfect brunch. We even got the mimosa sampler - a bottle of bubbly with your choice of three juices, to split amongst our table of three was enough to keep us happy. After being in South Tahoe for the last four days I can say without a doubt, the Getaway Café is my favorite restaurant. The food was exceptional; I love French toast and they have four different types! I got the coconut French toast with shredded coconut, bananas, and a decadent coconut cream sauce, smothering it! It was amazing! The bloody Mary's are also great. For those of you that like it spicy, they do use horseradish and their bloody Mary mix is incredible! But I have to say, the best part of this restaurant is the staff and ambience. Everyone was so incredibly kind and helpful. Our drinks never went below half a glass, and the helpings were tremendous and kept coming! I would absolutely recommend this restaurant, hands-down! The giant pancake wasn't quite so giant. I've seen a "senior" pancake the size of a 12 inch dinner plate. As I previously mentioned...they are very accommodating. My friend ordered the breakfast special. She wanted 1 pancake, 1 French toast, 1 sausage and 1 bacon. I told her she was crazy asking for so many deviations...but Bailey told her it was no problem. Wow! that was impressive. My friend said the pancake wasn't all that fluffy and the French toast was chewy. Another friend ordered Corned Beef Hash. It was tasty...but slightly burnt. Chicken Fried Steak is one of my go to breakfast items. I was excited it was made fresh and not of the frozen variety. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor. The gravy helped. Hubby ordered the chilaquiles. He loved the beans, but said he would pass on the chilaquiles next time. I wish I could give The Gateway Cafe 3 3/4 stars. Where do I start... Me and my friends went snowboarding for the first time, and on the way back we all were feeling a soreness that we have never felt before. The Getaway Cafe was exactly what we needed. The menu was reasonably priced (and the service is worth everything), the options were ridiculously accommodating and all delicious sounding. My choice was written in the stars. I am absolutely blown away by this French toast. The mix of sweet and savory made it not too sweet to stomach. And stomach it I did, ferociously. 12/10 Both of my friends also ate their food in silence, because that's what you do when the food is good.
