What a fantastic breakfast spot!! This is a little out of the way from the main South Lake Tahoe downtown but is well worth the short drive or would be great to hit on the way in / out. I ordered the deluxe eggs benedict, which they kindly added chorizo to in lieu of Canadian bacon; my boyfriend ordered the sausage, biscuits and gravy; and we shared the coconut french toast because we just really wanted to try it! The servings are large but we ate nearly everything, and needless to say we were stuffed! I absolutely loved the chorizo--might be my favorite from a restaurant. The French toast was nearly perfect too, as it was thick and soft / moist but not soggy. I loved the coconut but feel the normal French toast would've been great too. Everything tasted fresh and house-made, as they say it is. The staff was incredibly nice and I believe the owner was at the front hosting people, which goes to show the service, thought and effort that goes into this place! What was good, was good: I had the eggs Benedict with home fries. The home fries came out hot from the stove, lightly spicy and very tasty. The poached eggs were done perfectly and the English muffins were not burnt. (I have, unfortunately, experienced that before at another location.) My sister's breakfast was the corn beef hash, which really did look homemade, (unlike another restaurant in the area that served me what I believed was canned corn beef hash with almost soup texture.) her fruit was ripe. I do believe she very much enjoyed the breakfast. I may not be 100% correct on this, but I was rather disappointed in the hollandaise, it was a bit 'flat'. As far as I can tell, it was not true hollandaise. Most probably it was an egg Béchamel. It had a very creamy texture, a small tendency to congeal on the top, and lacked the bright zing of lemon and buttery texture and flavor of true hollandaise. Indicators, its lack of a slightly translucent and glossy finish, the lack of the acidity of lemon juice or vinegar, and did not weep butter, but instead seem to thicken and form a slight crust as I finished the Benedicts. The egg, Benedict were very tasty, but the hollandaise sauce with disappointing. (I really do like a good hollandaise.) read more

I stopped by The Getaway Cafe with my wife and two friends, and the hospitality here is truly top-notch. Our server, Carmen, was incredibly kind and gave us some great menu suggestions. To make the experience even better, the owner, Diane, actually came by our table to introduce herself. It's always really nice to see an owner who is that attentive to her customers and invested in the dining experience. For my meal, I ordered the breakfast burrito which, as you can see from the photo, comes wrapped in a great spinach tortilla and served with sour cream, and salsa. It was loaded with egg, chorizo, green and red peppers, onions, and pepper jack cheese. I was a bit surprised, though, because even with so many distinct, flavorful ingredients packed inside, those flavors didn't quite come through. The pepper jack cheese was just a little too heavy-handed and ended up overpowering everything else in the burrito. The other minor issue was that I had specifically ordered hashbrowns with my meal, but I was served the breakfast potatoes instead. They were still perfectly crisp and seasoned well, but just wasn't exactly what I asked for. Overall, the atmosphere and the service made it a great experience, but I just wish the burrito had a better balance with less cheese, and that the sides hadn't gotten mixed up. I found The Getaway Cafe through a local recommendation, and he did not steer me wrong. Breakfast here was great. Portions are big. My husband and I shared the chilaquiles with chorizo (their specialty) along with their coconut French toast. The chilaquiles dish was tasty. We felt the coconut French toast with bananas was okay and a little overhyped. Service was perfect. Our waitress kept checking on us and I noticed the owner personally visited each table as well. Getaway Cafe was recommended to us by my brother in law and sister in law. They visited before during their trips to Lake Tahoe. We checked it out this morning for breakfast. They had the banner for best brunch 2025 hanging nicely. Diane, the owner, put us on the waitlist and also showed us to our table. Very warm welcome! We started off with coffee. Hubby had the Chorizo Quesadilla and enjoyed it very much. The portion was enough for 2 meals. Sure enough, he took half home. I had the Coconut French Toast, the small portion. Even though it's supposed to be small, I still left some on my plate. Love the fresh sliced bananas with it! There are more menu items we would love to try. This is our second time here, but first time back in 7 years. It was just as good as I remembered. We arrived in Saturday around 8am and it wasn't busy at all, which was really nice. There is a lot of parking. The inside is a little small, but it's super cozy. We were seated right away. All of the waitresses were super friendly and helpful. I ordered the Morning After with sausage. It was so good. The potatoes were seasoned perfectly. The biscuit was nice and fluffy and the sausage gravy was super flavorful. My husband ordered the eggs benedict and he really liked it. We were in and out which was nice as we wanted to beat the traffic back down the hill to get home. The food was exceptional; I love French toast and they have four different types! I got the coconut French toast with shredded coconut, bananas, and a decadent coconut cream sauce, smothering it! It was amazing! The bloody Mary's are also great. For those of you that like it spicy, they do use horseradish and their bloody Mary mix is incredible! But I have to say, the best part of this restaurant is the staff and ambience. Everyone was so incredibly kind and helpful. Our drinks never went below half a glass, and the helpings were tremendous and kept coming! I would absolutely recommend this restaurant, hands-down! I immediately knew I had to order a dish that featured it, and the omelette was my choice. Cheesy, flavorful, packed with veggies and chorizo, encompassed with eggs made for a perfect brunch. We even got the mimosa sampler - a bottle of bubbly with your choice of three juices, to split amongst our table of three was enough to keep us happy. The giant pancake wasn't quite so giant. I've seen a "senior" pancake the size of a 12 inch dinner plate. As I previously mentioned...they are very accommodating. My friend ordered the breakfast special. She wanted 1 pancake, 1 French toast, 1 sausage and 1 bacon. I told her she was crazy asking for so many deviations...but Bailey told her it was no problem. Wow! that was impressive. My friend said the pancake wasn't all that fluffy and the French toast was chewy. Another friend ordered Corned Beef Hash. It was tasty...but slightly burnt. Chicken Fried Steak is one of my go to breakfast items. I was excited it was made fresh and not of the frozen variety. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor. The gravy helped. Hubby ordered the chilaquiles. He loved the beans, but said he would pass on the chilaquiles next time. I wish I could give The Gateway Cafe 3 3/4 stars. We got seated on the dog-friendly patio and placed our orders, which came out quickly. Coffee (even in the summer heat) and loaded Bloody Mary were both great and would recommend. Blackened chicken salad - I can always eat more veggies but this was a sizable plate with good proportions. Chicken was a little dry but balanced out with lots of creamy tomato and blue cheese. Love this spot so much. We always go a few times every time we're in SLT and Getaway always delivers. Expect a long wait for a table if you're going at peak breakfast/brunch time. Where do I start... Me and my friends went snowboarding for the first time, and on the way back we all were feeling a soreness that we have never felt before. The Getaway Cafe was exactly what we needed. The menu was reasonably priced (and the service is worth everything), the options were ridiculously accommodating and all delicious sounding. My choice was written in the stars. I am absolutely blown away by this French toast. The mix of sweet and savory made it not too sweet to stomach. And stomach it I did, ferociously. 12/10 Both of my friends also ate their food in silence, because that's what you do when the food is good.
