A quick walk from BU-and you get to walk in to a large bar with free popcorn! Whatttttttt!!! I was actually full when I came here so I didn't eat much popcorn but it's comparable to the type you get at movie theatres-very good and flavorful! I didn't try the food but I tried about 3 types of draft beers-all were very good and though I'm not a beer person, you can see how I ended up pretty drunk by keep trying new beers. The bartender was really sweet and let me try some before I committed-super nice! Although there were only about 2 bartenders, they were quick with service and we barely had to wait to get a drink even though there were lots of people here on a Friday night. When we started doing tequila shots, they of course got the salt and limes ready-unlike some bars that'll only give it when you ask. Love it! The bathroom is also clean and no line for the women's bathroom-another plus! I will definitely be back when I'm in the area. read more

A pub is easily the best friend to a solo traveler. I am fortunate enough to work for a company that will fly employees out to Boston from all over the place, put us up at a very nice hotel, and rent out a good portion of the House of Blues for a bash. I don't know too many of the employees, so hit Yelp to get a beer and evaluate my night. The Cornwall is right across from the hotel. I believe they have around 30-40 taps, and several bottles. I couldn't stop drinking the Smoked Stout and after I started talking to the regulars, Jameson became the chaser. Its here I had a big realization: 1) Boston people are great. Very friendly from my experience 2) They can drink. I wish I had a problem keeping up but I didn't 3) The cost of drinks are not the same in Boston as they are in Detroit Since almost all of my costs are covered, item 3 really isn't a huge deal. I think the elderly owner is finally losing his mind (and sadly, I mean that literally). A group of friends and I stumbled upon this place on a Friday evening around 9pm. Upon entering the front door, an elderly man was sitting on the bench in a Ralph Lauren polo, legs crossed, reading a newspaper. As we walked by him, thinking he was just a random person who was not affiliated with the bar, we suddenly heard a screech coming from his direction, "IDs, I need to see everyones IDs!". We stopped and apologized to the now visibly angry man, saying that we didn't realize that he was working there. At this point he was fuming with anger and screamed back at us, "I OWN THIS PLACE, AND I CAN SIT WHEREVER I WANT!". We replied that we have no problem with where he sat; we were simply not aware that he worked there. His hand now shook with rage as he clutched the newspaper in his fist. "You know what", he continued, "you had too much to drink. NONE OF YOU CAN COME IN!". It was obvious that we were all sober, but this old man wanted to prove to us that he was indeed the owner and possessed such dictatorial powers. My favorite bar/pub in the Kenmore Square area. We dropped in around 9:30pm on a Tuesday night and the space wasn't too crowded, although there were a fair number of people around the bar area. They have another large room on the right with several large pool tables and a small arcade, and towards the far back wall of the main room is an area with darts and a whole bookshelf full of board games (Risk, Monopoly, Clue, Life, Sorry, Uno, etc). This would be a great place to take a group of people and spend a couple of hours playing games. We picked up a game of Life and played it on one of the tables with an order of nachos. These nachos are HUGE, and definitely satisfied a nachos craving I'd been having for several days. They are completely covered with melted cheese (I've never seen another restaurant serve so much cheese on their nachos). It is cheese heaven. In addition to the standard toppings on the tortilla chips (jalapenos, tomatoes, and melted cheese, $8.95), the nachos also come with generous helpings of three different types of dipping sauces - salsa, sour cream, and queso sauce. You can add meat (pulled pork, chili, or chicken) for an additional two dollars ($10.95). We accidentally ordered the non-meat version by mistake but were still satisfied, because the jalapenos and cheese give a savory kick even when there isn't any meat involved. The nachos are such a big helping that the two of us barely finished the plate and were uncomfortably full afterwards. They would probably be better off split between a larger group of people than 2. Didn't try their beers this time but I have had several of their beers in the past, and they have a good selection for reasonable prices. Service is fast and the servers are very friendly. read more

Terrible experience! Stopped by here after doing a Sam Adams tour with a small group. Each of us in the group ordered one drink a piece and were just talking and trying to enjoy our night. A couple of guys went to the bar to order a second drink, and were not so politely told they could not have any more and that our entire group was "cut off". We were told we could stay and eat if we wanted, but no more drinks.. (seriously, we only had ONE each). So i asked to speak to whomever it was who made the decision. Evidently it was the owner himself. So as everyone was gathering their belongings to take our business elsewhere, I started off with an apology then asked what we did to get cut off. His answer was just "This is my establishment and I don't want you here. You went on the Sam Adams tour, you don't get to drink here now." And then told us to get out. Previously we could still stay and eat or hang out if we wanted... but then he changed it from vut off to kicked out! He actually followed us to the door and then just stood there until we left! I travel regularly around the country and the world and this is hands-down MY FAVORITE bar/pub anywhere. It's right in the heart of Kenmore Square (almost directly under the famous CITGO sign) so it's a great location for local Sox fans (great place for pre/post game); BU students; etc, but it's a fantastic respite for a weary traveler. Here's one example why: I hadn't been there in a little more than a year yet when I walked in bartender Ben yelled out my name and said "where've you been?" And he's not the exception - all the staff/owners are so friendly and welcoming. They have a GREAT collection of draft beers; bourbons; etc etc. The food is far more than you'd expect from a pub and they have lots of fun activities from darts to pool to other games. Worst bar in Boston. Extremely rude, and unjustifiably so. Bad service, takes forever to get a drink, and they openly mock their own customers. We walked in as a group after they first opened at about 4 pm on a Saturday because we were killing time before a hockey game. We were the only ones in there, and we paid our tab and tipped well. The waitress, however, was obnoxiously rude, constantly telling us we were "too loud". Then they accused us of playing drinking games and gambling! If you describe arguing over who is going to win tonight's hockey game "gambling" then I suppose we were. What a twit! It was not limited to just the waitress. The bartender, all tattoed up, when told by one of us "Oh, put that on the British guy's tab!" as a joke, because he in fact was the British guy. Given how this is a "British" pub, he thought that'd be amusing. Instead, the bartender (with no sense of irony) said "yeah, I'll put it on that As$hole's tab!" He wasn't joking. When our friend pointed out who he was, the bartender just looked at us, initially in horror, but then put on what appeared to be his best frat-boy face and said "oh, didn't recognize the accent". Yeah. Ok. Maybe they're used to kicking college kids out for being amateurs, and maybe they're default mode is "asshole". Either way, they miscalculated. Ever since leaving Oxford, I've been hoping to find some semblance of an English pub here in Boston. Although the bars I found served Strongbow and Old Speckled Hen, none managed to capture the feel of a proper pub. Then I found Cornwall's. When I read their slogan, "What happens when old fashioned british charm meets Downtown Boston?" I was optimistic, but guardedly so. The ability to replicate not only the menu of a pub, but also the atmosphere is not as easy as it sounds. Cornwall's managed to raise to the occasion. Severing personal favorites like Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Fullers London Pride, I was happy to find a local place that not only had the right beers, but also the right feel. Inside a combination of pub paraphernalia, like steins and signs, make you feel like you're holed away in Southern England, not a stones throw from the Kenmore station. The Shephard and Fish pies add to the Cornwall's authenticity. English staples like fish and chip, chicken pie and bangers and mash, Cornwall's definitely has the menu to support their claim as a pseudo-English pub. If you want something more American, they also serve burgers, sandwiches and salads. I suggest the Blue Mxx burger and a pint of Guinness. read more

You know when you walk into a bar and it feels like an awesome laid back party at someones house? Well that is Cornwall's! Come with a group of friends for pool or the board games in back, or grab a seat at the bar and chat with the uber friendly bar tenders. Chat it up with JR, Billy (the awesome guys that work there/own) or Ben and you are guaranteed a night of entertainment by making you drinks with names like the "Hot Pants"! They also have great beers on tap, esp for people who like craft stuff. Its the kind of place where you can grab a seat at the bar and by the end of the night have made friends with everyone around you! My roommates and I hold Taboo tournaments here and its great because we can show-up in anything from a fancy dress to basically pjs (I have not actually ever worn pjs, but know I could!) and still feel totally comfortable. Taboo is definitely MUCH better when you are drinking delicious cold beer and yelling out descriptions in the middle of a bar! So, make sure to check out the very back where all the games are! Its especailly fun when you and friends are slightly intoxicated and decide to go rummage for a game to play! That back little area that is great for large groups or parties has seen some crazy days from sorority girls riding each others backs in charades to a tense games of operation! *My smoker friends especially like this establishment on rainy/snowy days because their patio is covered, so you can smoke without getting wet! *They have a quarter machine, so if you live in the area and need more quarters, stop in, have a beer while the cycle washes and then head back home quarters in hand! read more

Any place that lets you play uno, battleship, monopoly or any other amazing board game while drinking, deserves three stars. That is just awesome. Plus, this place supplies the games too! Definitely a big typical English pub--really nothing too special other than how big it is for being on the street across from the Kenmore stop. There are pool tables and a big bar and darts... BUT this place when you first walk in just smells badly. And by badly I mean kind of like pee....ya....not so great for putting you in the mood to kick some butt on uno!! Just get a drink (their mixed drinks come in pint glasses here which is a total plus) and then soon enough you won't smell that pee smell too much longer....that is if your wait staff person ever brings you your drink--service is a bit on the slow side, but maybe that is because they were smelling that urine smell all night--that would make me operate more slowly too! But the smell aside, the drinks are strong, the beers are always from fresh taps and I hear that the food is actually pretty tasty here. It is a laid back pub to stumble into after a game or while you kill time until that last T train of the night (dumb boston for having the T close so early in the first place!!) and at least with the strength of the drinks here you will end on a high note!! Great pub for groups--a lot of standing and sitting room. However, I think what I like most about this place is their incredible waitress (Elizabeth?). She is AMAZING! By far, the most organized and friendly waitress I have ever met. Once, we came in as an enormous group of twenty people or so, and at the end, I embarrassingly asked if we could split the check up individually (I know, huge taboo and complete inconvenience). Well, our favorite waitress did it with accuracy. HOW? There were a bunch of us on the same tab, but she skillfully figured out EXACTLY what everyone had without asking. My co-worker came into my cubical and she asked me where Cornwalls was located. I was about to type cornwalls.com when I paused and googled it instead. Surprisingly, cornwalls.com actually is their website (I thought I was going to end up with something like 2girls1cup) but alas, there is no hardcore anal action- its just their street address and some olde English font. I can never get my mind out of the gutter when i'm around this place, every time I go the jokes about getting cornholed and bad puns about stretching for a few at the old cornwalls abound. They should have just called it Corn Wallace's. But all that aside, the bar has a pub vibe going and hardwood down the walls, floors, and over the bar itself. It gives it a light atmosphere without feeling sterile. When you walk in you go into the main bar room, which is actually slightly darker than the adjacent room that is off to the right where there are three pool tables, dart board or two, and some high stools and eating tables. This larger room has a juke box as well. The entire place has conveniently placed TV's in high places. This lends me to thinking that they cater to the sports crowd but I only come here on off weeknights or post midnight on weekends. I avoid this place (and most places) during sporting events because I feel sports are a pointless competition for people with extreme gender issues or the insecure who need group affiliation to feel like they belong in society- both of which freak me out when displayed en masse at a public venue where i'm trying to get drunk and not give a fuck. If you cut further through the bar room by going straight when you walk in you'll eventually find some tables on the other end of the bar (I think..). The bathrooms are off to the left halfway down the bar and are relatively clean (for a men's room at least). There is only one urinal in the men's room, which is cool by me because I prefer the illusion of solitude that the personal space affords me while I urinate. The beer selection is decent, with maybe 20 or so different beers on tap. Some of them are beers that I dont normally come across (Wachusett Winter) and are actually alright. Prices are 5 dollars a pint for about anything you order. I like this place for the same reason I like Big City in Allston, it has things to do and the crowd is not uniformly one imaginary social group. You get alot of after office workers ranging from 23-33, some older guys (50s) who wave their arms around when it gets crowded to get the bartenders attention, some club sluts and tools making a last stop on their way out of downtown, hipsters looking for pool or darts. It could be in my head but I find that people in this bar are generally friendlier when compared to other downtown pubs like Bean Town. I find the service here is usually strained, the bar will be packed with only 2 bartenders on duty, but at the same time the bartenders are friendly and appear to be trying. One of them even offered to go change a keg for me at peak hours and then tried to give me the beer for free because they were all out of what I asked for. I hear the food is good, although i've never eaten it. Whenever I go here I always end up at Popeye's across the street. One of the benefits of this place is that they have an outdoor smoking area with a couple benches that is chained off from the street. You can bring your beer out here with you while you have a smoke, a harder to come by novelty that all cigarette smokers appreciate. read more

The bartenders are not attentive. We waited a good 5-10 to place our initial order, even though I made eye contact with each of them, no one acknowledged us. Finally, order was placed. Then, when I wanted to admit they missed a beverage, I waved to them and they just waved back without coming to find out the issue... Still ignoring our presence. I ended up getting someone to pay attention, with some assertion, and they were appreciative that I was forthcoming, even though initially unpleasant. Just working for tips. As far as meeting people for a few beers before a Sox game, it doesn't get much better than Cornwall's. Sure, it fills up, but it's not the absolute bedlam that most Kenmore bars are. The food is good. The burger is a little different. It's made with onions and almost tastes more like a meat loaf sandwich, if you're into that sort of thing. Cornwall's is a good place to grab a beer or cocktail and play a boardgame. I went here last night and I think they've re-vamped their drink menu. I got a drink w/wild tea vodka and sparkling grapefruit juice and it was good. The moscow mule was alright too and they had drinks made w/aperol, campari, etc. The atmosphere of Cornwall's is def casual w/darts, pool tables, board games and random decor. It def has a pub feel. The service is standard. I do love that they have board games (Scrabble!) and feel like this may should earn them an extra star but since it is more of just a casual place, I think my max has to be 3. read more

I finally went in last night with a bunch of people after living close by for two years. I have not tried any of their food items so I'm basing this review on just the atmosphere aka I'm a lame person who didn't try their food. I think its a fun place to go and unwind with friends. They have a lot of board games (life, monopoly, taboo etc.) which is unbeatably the best thing you can do when you're slightly off it. They also have 2-3 pool tables which are full most of the time. Of course, you could stand on the players heads and they'll eventually give up. I doubt they play around with the beer list a lot although they do have a wide selection of tap beer. Their chicken wings (or fingers?!) and fries looked delish. The server was friendly and kept a check on our drinks throughout the night. They have outdoor seating for people who might want to grab a beer and go out to get a smoke, a difference from most bars in Boston. Although the beer selection is nothing compared to Sunset Grill up Comm. Ave., Cornwall's does hold its own as a casual place when you want to grab a drink or two and relax. Food was decent, company I had was excellent, waitress was quirky but not in a bad way... ...they were out of a number of items, but it didn't really infringe on our dining experience. As a connoisseur of class, I typically judge a bar by the alcoholic content of their margaritas and the fortitude of their nachos. In an uncertain climate, I can go by these truths. Cornwall's delivers on both fronts. Fact: it is a compelling reason to attend Boston University. It may be the main reason for my choice in Alma mater. Went there in my pinstripes after attending a Red Sox vs. Yankees game at Fenway Park. The Yankees got spanked and I needed a drink. I was treated by two of my Red Sox buddies which was surprising but hey, I took it. Entered and despite a few stairs, no one gave me a hard time which is something that was actually pretty surprising. The beers were cold and we even managed to find seating. The place has food as well but we didn't order any. Although it's a fairly generic bar, especially in a city like Boston, I found Cornwall's to be pretty good. It's nearly always packed but there's always room there and you never feel too cramped. They have an area with pool tables and the staff is experienced and serve everyone quickly. Alright, I've been here enough times now that I feel I can write a competent review. The place is (obviously) a pub, as well as a favorite haunt for BU students after class. As for the setting/atmosphere, Cornwall's is a cozy place layered with wooden furniture, wall fixtures, tables, and various posters/pictures you typically see at a pub. It's split up into two rooms: The bar area, which contains the shorter tables, 2 dartboards, a couple booths, bathrooms, some tvs, and naturally, the bar. The second room, which contains the taller tables, two pool tables, an internet jukebox, and the always-enticing "Big Buck Hunter 2". Draw your own conclusions. The food is decent; average bar fare with a healthy load of greasy appetizers to exacerbate any heartburn issues you may already have. If it's a busy night, however, you'll have to wait a little while to either order or have food brought to your table. The beers (selection and freshness) are wonderful. The taps are cold, carbonation is all there, very tasty selection, and nothing beats a frosty glass. Beers as a whole are also decently priced. Conversely, repeatedly buying rounds of shots will easily put you into the late-on-utility-bills category. Can I say that the bartenders are awesome? Within two visits I was on a first name basis with my usual order ready before I even walked up to the bar. Service in these types of places usually suffers when things get busy/hectic (i.e. the popular Thursday night), but the bartenders make sure that everyone waiting for a drink gets served. There's nothing I hate more than preferential treatment when I'm ordering a drink at a bar; I don't find any of that here. In short--a great place to hang out with friends. Hell, even if you don't have any friends, it's one of the better places to drink and not think about dying alone. But seriously, make some friends. read more

Let's dispense with any suppositions or inferences of "Britishness" here. People can debate the authenticity of British-themed pubs in America until they're royal blue in the face, but when the only distinction between such an establishment and any other bar is heavier food and Anglo-inspired decor, it's really not worth considering. Fact is, national alignment aside, Cornwall's is a safe bet for a nice night in Kenmore. An above-average beer list presents a number of interesting brews at reasonable prices (a pint of Old Speckled Hen for $6) and some less interesting ones at less reasonable prices ($4 cans of Narragansett). They provide a pretty enjoyable range of entertaining activities, from dart boards and pool tables to a sizeable collection of board games (note: playing Operation when you're a few beers deep is surprisingly intense). Table service can be occasionally less-than-adequate, but on the plus side, it's not too crowded, even on a Friday night, to simply order at the bar. Is an outing to Cornwall's the same as finding yourself with a Daily Mail-ful of fish and chips at the Cavern Club? Heck no. But if you want to grab some beers in Kenmore without finding yourself in a sea of people with no possibility of Battleship, this is the place for you. read more
