Corner Tavern is not the worst restaurant I've been to in Boston, but it's definitely not the best. It's a good place to go if you have a group with various tastes because everyone can usually find something on the menu. The food is overall pretty bland, nothing to write home about or even think about again. They do have a good beer list and the cocktails are good. It's a small space that gets really loud. They have tvs that play Boston sports, but most restaurants in this city do. Overall, just very average. read more

Surprised to see so many glowing reviews of this place. I just moved within a block of Corner Tavern from NYC and was really looking forward to having it as a 'go-to' spot. I've been twice and both times was very disappointed with the service. Bartenders were unfriendly and the waiter was inattentive. The second time my boyfriend and I went for dinner it was so bad that we ended up just walking right out after paying for our half-finished beers. The actual tables are 'first come, first serve' (when the bartender told me this you'd think I had just insulted her mother) which means that if there are two parties of people waiting and a table opens up, its up to you guys to duke it out for the table (and this can be pretty awkward). Food is actually pretty good with some creative spins on traditional fare. Duck confit tacos are TDF. Wish the service was on par with the food- if so then I'd be there twice a week! I love this place! Ended up here after a long day of shopping in Boston. Had never seen or heard of it before, but Yelp had great reviews (so I decided to pay it forward). This place is a little hidden since you have to go down the steps to get inside. It has that awesome "true tavern" feel. There aren't many tables & chairs, so we sat at the bar. There are some high tops in the back, and a second counter space along the restaurant for standing room if it gets crowded. ...It looked liked the type of place that could get really crammed on a good night, but on this particular Saturday it stayed pretty low key. Not a ton of people, not too loud... just enough to fill the chairs & make it feel lively. I was there from 9-11PM. (It's a long, but narrow space). The food took me by surprise. It was gourmet!! I ordered the veggie sandwich, and a friend got the greek salad. Both were huge portions and amazingly delicious. I can't stop thinking about it. The bartenders were cool too. I have no idea how this place has the rating that it does. My girlfriend and I came here on a whim for lunch this past Saturday based on yelp recommendations. We were out shopping and it's a bit of a hike from our home so we most definitely will not be coming back. If we weren't so hungry we would have got up and left solely because of the crap service being provided by the angry bartender. Like I said, we were both hungry and finding another place to eat and drink at the time seemed like more of a pain than just muddling through the bartenders bad day. In hindsight, I wish we would of left after ordering our first round of drinks. The food was OK. Nothing special. I had the meatloaf burger and she had a chicken wrap. The meatloaf burger was different and came on a soft roll. The fried red potatoes on the side were soggy. I didn't taste her chicken wrap but she said it was about average and nothing to rave about. I hate to beat a dead horse but the service was very much below par especially considering how few people were in the establishment. We sat at the bar and the bartender seemed to be the only service person working. We usually try to sit at the bar no matter where we go because we enjoy the faster service and attention that is generally provided at the bar. I don't know why the bartender had his panties in a bunch but it definitely seemed like he was annoyed that we came in and wanted to give him our money. Once again, it was not busy by any means. The bartender never said hello, waited a good 5 minutes before offering to take a drink order, and seemed annoyed when we asked him for anything other than the lemons he was slicing. I don't expect you to kiss my butt or pretend like I'm the only person in the place but at least say hello, offer me a drink and a menu and offer me a refill when we're sitting right in front of you and you can clearly see my glass is empty and has been for a good while. Just to note, when an acquaintance of the bartender came in, the bartender was very chatty and attentive to that person. I don't think the bartender said more than ten words to us and is at least 50% of the reason we will never come back. Bottom line, we definitely will not be back, would not recommend this place to anyone and would recommend you find someplace else to spend your hard earned money. read more

The food at Corner is definitely worth stopping in for. They have a surprisingly large menu with lots of good dishes to try. It's not the biggest bar but the prices are very reasonable and the staff is usually extremely nice and attentive to all the customers. The only complaint that I would have about the Corner Tavern is that they do not accept the Discover card which can be annoying. Other than that 5 stars! read more

Unexpected great lunch in a local dive bar! This place has HUGE crab cakes. Had to be hand packed and 1/3 of a pound. Delicious is just an understatement. There was luscious crab meat just falling off my sandwich. The pasta salad was recommended to us by bartender and my husband and I loved it. It does have pesto (and roasted red peppers) in it, so if you dislike pesto you probably won't be a fan. The bartender was very amusing and helpful, if you are casual with a sense of humor you will like this place. She provided us a nice list of other great places to go. The roasted potatoes were scrumptious, but we would have preferred 2 orders of pasta salad. This kept us full ALL day. read more

You must get their pasta salad if you like pesto. They give you a lot that it may seem like you are paying half of your dinner for the pasta. Based on reviews tried this place out as it was close to my sons school. Had a wonderful lunch, Chicken Pesto sandwich w a side of tomato bisque. The food was great, server/bartender was very nice, and also very reasonably priced. I went back the next day w my son and his friend, and also had another nice lunch, the only down side was the waitress this day was a bit less friendly. Very disappointed. I had a bbq pork sandwich and a glass of beer during happy hour. The food and drink was fine but the bill I am being billed for 2 glasses of beer. I called back this morning and the guy named Chris answered the phone told me that unless I had the receipt, there is nothing he can do about it. Unfortunately, I didn't save this receipt, so he said nothing he can do about it. This leaves a sour taste in my mouth...I will not be coming back here anytime soon until management change their way of serving their customers. read more

A lot of the low reviews seem to mention lack of fries, the wings, and the service. In my opinion, if you come here and want to get either wings or fries, you are in the wrong place. Understandable to want to get these foods at a bar, but this place serves so many other (better) things. I've tried my best to sample their menu thoroughly, and have been very happy every time. The meatloaf burger is excellent. I also have had the crabcake sandwich which was also excellent. My girlfriend had a cali wrap and was quite happy (although she liked my crabcake sandwich better). They also change up their menu occasionally, keeping the old favorites and bringing in some new ones. The crabcake sandwich was no longer offered, but now there is a braised short rib sandwich (I tried this and really enjoyed it), pork belly sanwich (my next to try) and some others. For sides, the roasted potatoes are quite good (not the best ever) and the mixed greens with balsamic vinaigrette also do the job. I have been here a bunch of times and have never experienced poor service. Average at worst, but on weekday evenings there is a tall, larger fellow who does a great job with service, very happy to give recommendations on food and drinks, and very interested in whether you enjoyed your meal. Plus, they have a new late night menu (after 11 pm) and also ridiculous lunch specials on some menu items (probably one of the best deals, if not the best deal, on lunch you can get anywhere in Boston). Beers are average price ($5-$6 for most, with occasional specials like $3 tallboys). read more

The Bad: I am was in the hood and stopped down at the Corner to get some food. Was a Sunday evening and the bar tender was a complete jerk. Ignored me and had a major attitude. Exudes the fact that he could care less...no clue how to welcome some one into the bar. Talked about football with some knucklehead guy at the bar virtually ignoring his JOB...this idjit was as fouled up as a clueless barteneder could be. GET RID OF THIS GUY. The Ugly: Was a shame as I was hungry and just wanted to get some food...didnt feel like I needed to deal with a mush head when all he had to do was give me a menu and a beer. After 20 minutes of complete lack of attention on a very slow night...I was pretty much shocked. When he finally came around he was obviously tense that a customer might want to order something as he evidently wanted to thrill the spellbound drunk on his footbal opinions which were as stupid as he was. The Good: I know that the chef and the other caring staff there have been busting to make this place a great spot. The food I have had recently was really upscale for the capability of such a small kitchen. The chef is creative and intelligent and knows his food. So a great young chef and staff working their ass off get winged by a donkey who has more personality disorders going then MItt Romney and Paul Ryan combined! I have to give this place a 2 star when I know it is an easy 4-5 star BUT BUT BUT it all starts at the front of the house and if the bartender cant get a menu to a customer it will remain a 2 star joint. If I had written this review a month ago, it would have gotten a 5. Living close-by, Corner Tavern has been one of our favorite restaurants to go during our 2-year stint in the Back Bay. Whenever I've had a particularly tough week, the best thing is an evening at Corner Tavern which couldn't be complete without a few cold Allagash drafts, tavern tots, and the meatloaf burger. It is comfort food at it's finest. This past Friday, however, we sat down for the meal that I always look forward to, were actually disappointed for the first time. They have recently changed their menu, and not for the better. The largest offense was that they replaced the rosemary aioli (which accompanied the tavern tots) with a Sriracha-based dipping sauce. Why would they switch from a delicious and sophisticated aioli to a mediocre and inferior dip? I can't understand it. Second, they had changed their pasta salad recipe. I'm not sure if they switched what kind of pesto they used, or what, but it definitely did not taste the same. The only saving grace was the aforementioned cold Allagash and meatloaf burger, which I order time and time again. Overall, Corner Tavern is a casual neighborhood bar and restaurant, perfect for meeting friends a chilly night for a beer and bite. Please, please bring back the rosemary aioli!! read more

In the interests of helping Yelp users, I'm reiterating what I said in my previous review: 1. Wings are bad. 2. Beer selection is poor. 3. It's downstairs in a basement and narrow. 4. There is definitely at least one bartender there who is not a people person. With bar options abound, I'd just go around the corner to another bar. A buddy and I recently hit the MFA (Americas exhibit was very cool) and decided to seek's Yelp's advice for a local pub before eventually hitting a Bruins game. After passing on a few places that didn't peak either of our interests, we took the walk (long? yes. ridiculously cold? yes. worth it? you bet) to The Corner Tavern. Long story short - I really recommend it. It's one of those places you just feel at home at even if you don't live nearby. The drinks were fairly priced and they had a decent selection of microbrews. The food were very good and and as a bonus, felt a bit on the less heavy side for pub fare since they don't have a fryer or a grill top. They do a great job in their modest kitchen as the pulled pork quesadilla were very good, the baked sweet/spicy chicken wings were juicy and packed a ton of flavor (I think they brine them before hand but can't say 100% for sure). And the meatloaf burger was particularly tasty. The pasta salad and baked herbed potatoes were nice addition as well. As you can, this is certainly a place I will visit again next time I am in town. Oh, and in case you were curious, the Bruins ended up losing a tough one to the Maple Leafs. The only part of the day that disappointed.... read more

The Corner Tavern has been slipping lately; it's become a very mediocre bar. I've noticed less interesting beers on tap, and the happy hour food specials keep shrinking. It has a lot of standing room in the front for busy weekends, but for after work drinks they could do more to make it feel welcoming. Stopped in here last night for a spur of the moment dinner out - glad we did! It was super empty, but hey - they're still new. Bartender was quick with service, and the atmosphere here is very chill. The food was way better than I had expected - got a few apps to share. We had the white bean dip, pork quesadillas, and the chili-lime wings. They were all fantastic! Few friends met up with us and had a brie-turkey-cranberry sandwich and a Cuban and they both loved theirs as well. Will definitely be back another night after work!
