This restaurant is two minutes from where I live and it could be my go to place every week except it has a limited menu that does not change frequently. The new owners (Joanna) had years of experience at excellent restaurants in New York. She certainly knows how to run a restaurant. It's unfortunately it has a very limited menu which means we can frequent the restaurant as often as we'd like. Hopefully when we return in the spring they're able to expand the menu. Burger Night was great. They are also doing a fantastic job with their COVID safety protocols. All staff were wearing masks and they even ask the customers to wear masks when speaking to the servers! I respect any restaurant that cares about the lives of their staff. read more

This experience was awesome. Waitstaff friendly and helpful, building and decor lovely. A modern rendition of a Viking longhouse in my opinion, I noted this to our server and she told me the chef was Swedish....indeed! I had gnocchi as an app, it was delicious, so much flavor. Swedish meatballs for my entree, again wonderful. I am normally loving the savories over dessert, but this time dessert won the prize for me. A lemon curd with basil ice cream, holy crap....just holy crap, wow! If you like an interesting cocktail, try one of their originals, that barkeep has great taste and creativity! It was expensive for sure but I, no joke, would forgo any other eating out to enjoy this place twice a year. Compliments to the chef! read more

UPDATE June '15: Last month the long time chef and the pastry chef of Community Table left. We went as many times as possible beforehand.....thankfully. That man was magical. He was a unicorn of food creation. Unfortunately, it's not the same anymore. The prices have gone up(!?!?!) while the creative interesting dishes have dwindled. I used to love really anything they put in front of me. This was the first time we left disappointed. We always have two appetizers and two entrees and swap 1/2 way though. We had the oysters and beef tartar, then a chicken dish($30) and a rib eye dish($36). Compared to how oysters used to be done here, it was boring with just a little dish of juice in between to add. They used to do up each oyster in the most beautiful way with cool ingredients. The tartar was white because it was slathered in cream cheese....it was described as being accompanied by horseradish. I'm not a big dairy fan and this was too much for me. If it'd been described that way we would have skipped it. They used to be spot on with their menu descriptions...so what is happening now?! The chicken was cooked fine(my boyfriend said it was dry by the time he got it), but the side was sauteed asparagus and some weird mini pieces of lettuce on it. Pardon my candor but WTF makes that $30? The beef had a stalk of watercress with it. Literally, a small bush with leaves attached. Was I supposed to eat that with the mushy carrots? WHERE are the super cool otherworldly ingredients that I used to google that were delicious!?!?! Lastly, we got the chocolate beignets to share. The pastry chef who used to be here was incredible....so inventive with his dishes. These were just naked little donut holes with chocolate in the middle. Blah. The only thing that hasn't changed is the service(still top notch) and the well crafted cocktails. We will try again in a few months to see if the food goes back to the impeccable dishes we were used to, but otherwise I won't be making this splurge anymore and I'm kinda pissed about it. =( read more

Three and a half stars is a more accurate assessment of my times at Community Table, but I chose to round down, largely because Community Table never quite lives up to the expectations it sets for itself. The restaurant itself is simply and cleanly decorated, reflecting the high end, farm-to-table restaurant's commitment to good, honest food. In warmer months, you can even catch a glimpse of the gardening operation out back. The service is impeccable: friendly, attentive, and informed. Cocktails are inventive and delicious - highlights are Airmail and The Leatherman - and I've always been pleased with the wine list. The food really shines in the first courses. I enjoyed a perfect beef tartare recently, and my companion raved about her smoked trout dip. This is typical of my visits to Community table. Wowed by cocktails and appetizers, then inevitably left wondering why the main course is a step below. Most recently, I ordered the pappardelle with hen of the woods mushrooms and cherry bomb peppers, figuring the two listed ingredients were the standouts of a more complete dish, especially considering the price tag of $29. I was mistaken and disappointedly received a bowl of, albeit tasty and well cooked, fresh pasta with cream sauce, some mushrooms, and a suggestion of cherry bomb peppers. The food wasn't bad, but in no way impressed. For $29 I felt...deceived. This isn't Manhattan, after all. Most of my main courses have similarly left me wanting. None was bad, each showcased impressive technique, but ultimately didn't live up to expectations or the price tag. Worth a visit, if you're willing and able to drop a few hundred on dinner. For me, I'm motivated less and less to return. read more

As good as it gets in the country let alone the CT, NY area. this is how dining should be. everything is so full of flavor and cooked to 5 star perfection. be sure to get there right at 5pm or be prepared to wait for a while. there are no reservations. Happened by this restaurant on the way home from a mini-vacation in the NW Corner with my son. Despite the upscale atmosphere, they welcomed and seated us right away in our hiking attire (early dinner). We enjoyed appetizers through dessert. Wait staff was attentive as well as the owner. The food came out in a timely manner, was delicious, and presented beautifully.The fine details make this place great. It sounds like they change the menu regularly. Minor detractor is the charge for bread at the table and my entree was a bit heavy handed on the salt. Overall a special meal. We will be back when we are in the area again...maybe with husband and other son in tow too. Not inexpensive but special enough to warrant the cost. read more

Wow, aside from odd parking in tandem this is a truly amazing and true to word place to dine for farm to table. It's not just greenwashing going on here, the Northern European heritage the chef carries allows for a root cellar to keep local throughout the season. The salads with pea shoots and long list of local providers for food sources really is nothing I've seen prior in all my travels. It's not economical but for the area it's on par so don't miss the chance to try it out. Just be sure you reserve in advance as that in itself is likely the largest chore to get a table. read more

With a simple layout and an enchanting feel, CT is a step out of the rushing world into a charming and quiet space with exquisite design touches everywhere you look. This is not Connecticut but more like the Swedish countryside, with a big helping of Josef Frank wall treatments and wonderful touches like the birds' nest chandeliers. A new bar addition is recently opened, made with handsome wood, black walnut, I suppose, with sleek and comfortable bar stools of stylish Scandinavian dark wood. We were clearly taken with the ambience. Our favorites at the bar were the CT Martini, with hints of cucumber and celery; and the Long Ships cocktail, a delicious concoction of Buckthorn vodka, dry orange soda and Elderflower foam, reminiscent of a fine Pisco Sour. Chef Joel Viehland is working miracles with local sourced foods and astounding creativity. His resume includes a decade of working with Emeril Lagasse and Susan Spicer in New Orleans, and he has mastered the art of fusing flavors. We were amazed to find some hogshead cheese he made on the appetizer table along with several cured meats. We were fortunate to join Joel on a Sunday morning foraging mission, where he showed us how to harvest edible flowers and wild garlic, among other pathside treats. But on Saturday night we delighted with our Buffalo tenderloin and French country-style baked chicken. We're not doing justice to these items, the menu changes every day and we couldn't go back and look, but suffice to say they were exquisitely prepared and fused with unexpected flavors. The dark chocolate pot du creme with chicory, rye and dandelion root ice cream was like Disneyland with fireworks. If you're in the Washington-New Preston, Connecticut area, do your self a favor and visit this charming culinary oasis. read more

As a vegan and a teetotaler, I wouldn't count as a typical customer of this establishment, but I don't think I've ever had a better meal, even at establishments dedicated to vegan cuisine. I simply registered my dietary restriction when I made the reservation and then, at the restaurant, I ordered the 4-course dinner telling the waitress to consider me (within my declared parameters) an adventurous eater. So let the chef do whatever seems right. And everything I got tasted absolutely delicious. The avocado ice-"cream" amuse-bouche; a salad centered on some sort of pesto out of Brussels sprouts; a hen-of-the-woods entree that balanced a charbroiled crispiness at the fringes with the juiciness within you'd expect of wild mushrooms; and finally an exquisite dessert of elderflower sorbet with poached pairs and a salted plum. Everything came rich with complex and pleasing details too numerous to list (lingonberries - the chef comes from Denmark). The whole spectrum of flavors seemed original, carefully considered and certainly fun. I make a point of writing reviews here when I have a chance to point other vegans to places that might not look promising from a glance at the menu. Of course some places just won't accommodate a vegan at all. But others just pass off side dishes on hand that don't add up to a meal. If you can afford to splurge, you could memorably feast a vegan here, say to celebrate a birthday or the equivalent! read more

Just went to a special birthday dinner, where three out of the four of us had a birthday last Saturday night. This is not a typical family birthday restaurant. But we wanted something top shelf for the special occasion. We got the corner booth, and it was a cold and cozy night in one of the best and consistently good restaurants in all of the Litchfield Hills. Our waitress Megan was excellent. We had originally told them we wanted three dessert plates with a birthday theme, but at the last minute we decided to go to someone's home and celebrate with drinks and dessert there. When Megan heard that we didn't want to get dessert, she looked a little upset. We all said oh wow, she seemed disappointed! Minutes later she walked out and we knew why. They had previously prepared the plates with beautifully hand-written and intricate "Happy Birthday" design on the plates, and were expecting us to order our favorite dessert. So they brought out complimentary dessert for us anyway! What a class act. I won't go into the food too deeply, but I will say the steak medallions, the lamb ragout, and the snapper, were triumphs. Our only complaint was the portions could have been slightly larger, because it was so delicious and meticulously prepared. The atmosphere, the food, the decor...all beautiful and beautifully presented. But the table service we received was terrible. Once our waitress took our order we never saw her again until she was at our table to apologize. I had to ask for a steak knife (to cut my steak); bread, because we were not offered any; and I although I would have loved a glass of wine with dinner, nobody bothered to ask, so my empty beer glass sat on the table for 1.5 hours. The restaurant was busy, but not terribly so, and the waitress to her credit did apologize, however, our table for two abutted two other tables for two (I could have reached over and stolen their bread we were so close) and she managed to give them good service. My husband was never offered wine. We had to ask for more bread. Basically, we were ignored. Our waitresses apology was fraught with "I got very busy" ...which actually stung more than it helped -- I've waited tables for 15 years and if I am in the weeds, I simply tell the table/party that I'll be with them in a minute. A bit of prevention goes a long way, especially if you walk by my table at least 15 times during the course of my meal (which I told her she did). In addition, we were brought two lovely glasses of Sauternes as an apology, but I was driving and at that point, didn't really want the wine I had wanted during my meal. And driving home after drinking fortified wine is not a terribly good idea. She said she would take care of us when we came back, but I'm not sure I want to go back -- Maybe I'll wait until the waitstaff is properly trained. My husband and I just moved to the area and we are really enthusiastic about food--foodies, for lack of a better term. I'm sad because this is the best restaurant we've been to since moving here :( read more

Everything tastes fresh and delicious, probably one of the best dining experiences I have had in CT. Menu is small and changes often but most everything is locally sourced and fresh. Service is great, prices are a bit on the high side but well worth it for the quality of food. Come here for a real dining experience. Edit: Had dinner here and it was even better than the brunch. Menu is pretty much changed daily based on whatever they can get from local farms and it's all pretty delicious across the board. Expensive($125+tip range) for two if you each get an app, an entree and some drinks but well worth it. Edit #2: Been here at least a dozen times now and it continues to be the best restaurant I've been in CT. The menu changes daily so each time it's something new and it never fails to disappoint. Wow, was the food fresh and wonderful! We've been hearing about this place from a variety of friends, and finally made it there. The smoked trout spread was delicious. Not overly smoky or fishy. The hot sour dough bread was perfect. The kale, pecan, apple and blue cheese salad was fresh and crisp. We both had the organic salmon, served with multicolor carrots. There was a sweet glaze that was the perfect finish. The service was great. Water bottles filled, plates cleared, by what seemed to be invisible servers. We will definitely be back! read more

I wish this site gave you the ability to give 1/2 stars because I would give this restaurant 3.5 stars. What kept it from being a 4 star restaurant for me (and I only give 5 stars to the best meals ever) was the service. We weren't sure who our waiter was. and if you start wondering things like, "I wonder if they are going to take our order?" to me thats unacceptable. Or if the people who came in after you get their appetizers before your order is even taken, also unacceptable. And believe me, we weren't rushing but if at every juncture of the meal, ordering the meal, ordering dessert, getting the check- you have to prompt them or suggest that you want to do this, its not great service. I just felt like no one was checking in on us to make sure we needed something or that we were doing ok. That being said, the food was delicious. We ordered the oysters and a selection of 2 cheeses and 1 meat from the charcuterie menu. The portions of the meat and cheese were very large- in fact, we couldn't finish the prosciutto they gave us. My husband had the fried chicken and I had the scallops- both very good. The restaurant is decorated very nicely and overall we had a nice meal. read more

Chef appeared to present an amuse and a few of the courses, food was well seasoned and cooked exactingly. Very prompt, observant, and never any 'let me ask the chef' they always know about all the things being served. They must have to really prepare each day. Happy with my meal choices. Amazing seasonal food, beautiful décor, and fantastic staff. We dined at Ct yesterday and were artfully placed in a corner table spaced away from other guests so as to enjoy our table conversation. The entire staff was attentive and warm. Among the four of us we sampled the four oysters with bacon, the mushroom toast with hens of the forest (to die for!), pear and kale salad, and the smoked trout spread. Simply amazing. We then moved to our main courses: cauliflower soup with foie gras, savory meatballs, and scallops with apple cider vinegar and toasted pine nuts.
