Cheeseburger, at Gooseboro Drive-In, in Bantam, CT.
    Tom D.

Gooseboro Drive-In is an Old School roadside Hot dog stand. Dropped in for a quick lunch the other day, I ordered a Long dog & a cheeseburger. I believe the hot dogs they serve at Gooseboro are Hummel Brothers, at any rate, I enjoyed my Long dog immensely. Topped it off with some hot chopped peppers, sauerkraut & spicy mustard, it really hit the spot. The cheeseburger, on the other hand, was underwhelming. Was just "OK", I kinda wished I had ordered another Long dog instead. Or maybe put some of the hot chopped peppers on that cheeseburger for flavor ? I know I'll be back though, I drive by there at least four times a week in the early afternoons. And if I'm ever with my wife, she'll want to stop for one of their milkshakes. A solid 4 Star Rating (seems to be in line with my fellow Yelpers).

Gooseboro Drive-In was a place that I've driven by countless times but never stopped until this evening. We wanted something quick and that wouldn't take forever to make as our toddler was quite hungry. Service is inside at the counter and you can take your food to go or sit outside on one of their many picnic tables-which are well maintained. They have s good selection on their menu, pretty much something for everyone. Their chocolate milkshake was a 5 stars as well as their hotdog! The fries were just eh, nothing great. We will definitely be back on our next hike up to Mnt. Tom a local state park.

There ain't nothin' in the world Like a big-eyed girl Make me feel real loose, like a long necked goose Like a girl, oh baby, that's what I like (The Big Bopper - Chantilly Lace) If you've ever driven through Bantam (that's between Litchfield and the NY line) on Route 202, you've seen the aquamarine blue shingles of its mansard roof. And no doubt, you've seen its logo of a long necked goose wearing a chef's hat lovingly carrying a hot dog in it its wings. Welcome to the Gooseboro Drive-In. It's not a drive-in in the literal sense, but think of it as a roadside stop for ten burger variations, seven different hot dogs, plus sandwiches, fried goodies like chicken, fish, seafood, rings, and fries. Oh, and for dessert you can treat yourself to soft serve, sundaes and flurries. Gooseboro dates way back to 1961 and the small soft serve cone I enjoyed yesterday seemed to have been priced from one of its past decades. How about $2.30 for a cone? I went the big spender route and added on chocolate sprinkles for sixty cents. By the way, the sprinkles were GREAT! Soft and super chocolatey. Not like the gravel you get once in a while. You won't find any indoor seating, but who needs that when you can grab a seat at one of their many picnic tables on the lawn, and do some people watching and car watching as they zoom by on Route 202. They're open on a seasonal basis from March to November, and they have a Facebook page that acts as their website. Go take a ride out to the country and enjoy one of life's simple pleasures...

    So good!!

ORIGIN: Clubhouse Provisions opened in Fall 2022 as part of…read morean effort to revamp visitors' experience. (Thanks to Bill S., Litchfield-based CT Yelp Elite, for bringing the restaurant to mind through his informative review.) The revitalization effort was initiated by a couple -- Jill Farrarotti and Jonathan Philips. Farrarotti's family owned the site since 1955 and Philips has professional food service experience. LOCATION: The restaurant is located at the edge of Stonybrook Golf -- a nine hole public golf course set on a picturesque rural road. CONCEPT: Clubhouse Provisions serves modern American and Asian-inspired dishes in a public clubhouse setting. ATMOSPHERE: The clubhouse is modern and bright, with wraparound glass windows overlooking the golf course, cathedral ceiling, and light-colored painted wood paneled walls. SERVICE: Service is informative and friendly. FOOD: The Crispy Thai Calamari ($20) is worth a visit in itself, and is available during brunch (Sunday), lunch, and dinner service. There is a mix of baby spinach, thinly breaded, crispy Calamari, and chunks of mango and grapefruit veiled by an Asian dressing. It shares top place for best iteration of fried calamari I've experienced (the other is Rhode Island style at a RI restaurant). Pork Belly Bites ($21) makes for a good small plate to share when looking to enjoy a drink and a bite on the porch or at the bar. The Avocado Toast ($25), a popular brunch item prior to 2025 season, has been modified and in my mind has an overemphasis on vinegar flavor, delivered through balsamic drizzle and mound of pickled onions. TIPS: The restaurant is only open seasonally due to its relationship with golf course. The absence of sound-absorbing ceiling material makes the dining experience uncomfortably noisy when the dining room is full. The space is available for hosting events.

Chef Jon is back, and his opening menu for Litchfield Restaurant Week is an excellent one, fully supported by the kitchen which is blending in some newcomers with its experienced staff. We like the wait staff we encountered, too: Jonelle and Abby, super friendly as always, and quick to respond. The early menu is limited but tasty: the fried chicken breast sandwich is back and as yummy as could be hoped. We enjoyed the salmon poke bowl (a little more acidity needed) and the splendid calamari. The deserts we sampled, cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake, were simply delicious. We are so happy to welcome Clubhouse Provisions back and look forward to many more visits and an update on the full menu later this year.

The New England Clam Chowder (which I took to go) was so thick and had a lot of ingredients mixed in! It was delicious! The bread on my sandwich was fresh, and my dog and I both enthusiastically recommend the turkey. I recommend the brie cheese it came with. The food traveled well, even the spinach.

So we wanted to thank them and alert others to this slightly hidden gem in the Litchfield Hills. They make some terrific sandwiches -- the roast beef dip is incredibly tasty. And they prepared a delicious turkey dinner for us with excellent stuffing and gravy, yams, etc. Gene (the owner) and his employees are really agreeable, knowledgeable and helpful in every way. And we haven't even sampled their salads, either, so theres are more treats ahead for us.

Unfortunately, the evening became a three-hour waiting game. We were seated promptly, ordered drinks and were off to a nice start. Then everything stalled. Our starters took nearly an hour, and our main courses arrived almost two hours after we sat down. We were patient at first, but eventually the relaxed pace simply became frustrating... more bread, another glass of wine and still no food. When it finally arrived, the food was delicious. The duck dumplings, onion tart, crusted lamb loin and corn agnolotti were all beautifully prepared. Michelle also did a great job on the service side, but the kitchen was painfully slow. What disappointed us most was the lack of hospitality. There was no meaningful apology, acknowledgment or real effort to make things right... and we were charged for everything. More bread and a pint of ice cream didn't address the situation. We left impressed by the food but deeply dissatisfied with the overall experience. The prices reflect a fine-dining restaurant, but the service and hospitality did not come close. At this level, excellent food isn't enough. Fine-dining prices demand a fine-dining experience... and this simply wasn't one.
