Patty's is a gem for locals and highway travelers alike. Here is my list of go to favorites. Fried chicken has to be number one! I order the tenders for my Mardi Gras theme party every spring. Second favorite is the Chicken Apple Walnut salad. The surprise tang of the grapes is phenomenal! Random roadside stop for a bite to eat turned into a delicious discovery. I had stopped for gas on a recent road trip and this very unassuming place was right next door. This spot is clearly a local favorite. Lots of folks ordered their fried chicken which looked super crispy and meaty...and their grilled cheese. I opted for an Italian grinder which was loaded with fresh meat, lettuce and tomato. Was not expecting Mayo with the oil and vinegar as a condiment. I think I would have preferred it without the Mayo but it was still outstanding. The service was quick and friendly. There were so many tasty treats in the case from salads to dessert. I did grab a jalapeño and bacon Mac and cheese on a whim and I'm glad I did. So good! There's no place to sit inside but there are picnic tables just out front. We were headed to Southford Falls State Park and found this deli as we exited off I-84. There is a wide selection of sandwiches available as well fried chicken so it took awhile to settle on an Italian cold cut grinder. Overall the grinder was good, but pricey given the limited amount of meat that was included. Currently there is no inside seating so most orders are taken to go. The BIG QUESTION IS HOW DOES THIS PLACE GET 3 STARS??? Worst Fried Chicken I have ever tried to eat. I say tried to eat because it was THAT BAD!! Overcooked, oversalted, basically terrible!! In addition we bought Cole slaw and Red potato salad. The cole slaw was not good and the Red Potato salad was worse. They used dried dill and way too much. Plus the service was poor to midling. Travelers and folks coming off the highway: beware! Spend your money elsewhere! I just recently started working in the area and this place is the closest to my job I've been here about 4 or 5 times and every time has been pretty awful. The man who I assume owns or at least manages this place is extremely rude and unfriendly (the rest of the staff seems fine). I tried ordering an egg and cheese today, not knowing breakfast sandwiches stop at 11am, and he actually wagged his hand in my face like I was a child and goes, "no, no you can't." I thought he was joking at first because surely, nobody would be that rude towards someone asking politely for a sandwich, but no, he was dead serious. I opted for on of their "Specials" instead, a tomato, mozzarella and pesto sandwich--which was an oily, soggy disaster--and paid nearly $7 for it. I ordered a meatball sandwich (on a hard roll) for $5.99 -- meatballs were bland, flavorless. My wife had the quarter of a pound size of chicken salad -- again, bland, lacking any hint of flavor. We shared a bag of small chips, a large cookie and a Diet Coke. Total bill was $16.95, felt I got ripped-off. "Highway robbery" if I wanted to be funny, but I really didn't find it to be that funny. Any supermarket would've had better quality food at their deli and it would've cost less. Also, the woman who rang my up, just took my $$$ and didn't say a word -- no "thanks", or "have a good day", nothing. Bland, just like the food. I'm done with Patty's Pantry after this experience. Talk about stumbling upon a place. Only reason I was even here is because we happened to pull off the highway for gas, and saw the fried chicken and beer sign. Considering that I had about 180 more miles to drive, beer was not a good idea. But I can never resist fried chicken. It's been my weakness all of my life. So after seeing the Yelp reviews, I decided to give it a shot. Even if it was "only" 3 stars, the reviews seemed to bot be terrible. I am glad I did. But let's be clear... yes, the fried chicken was greasy. That's the point of fried chicken. I appreciated what they are doing. On my way through CT, I made a pitstop at Patty's Pantry in Southbury, which is conveniently located off I-84 Exit 16 next to the Mobil station and in close proximity to Pomperaug Regional High School. This small convenience store offers the basic convenience store items, cold drinks, cold beers, snacks, newspapers, and a full service deli counter which also offers fried chicken, made to order subs & sandwiches, a good selection of cold deli salads, baked goods, and heat and serve microwave meals. The prices here are reasonable. I stopped in here around 7PM on a quiet evening to pick up some food to eat for later on. I was going to pick up some fried chicken, but the pile of chicken looked like it was sitting out for a while in the heated case. Instead, I got a "heat & serve" Chicken Parm Dinner ($6.99) and a Greek Pasta Salad with Feta ($2.30) for takeout. I was also going to get a Red Skin Potato Salad, but they sold out. The girl at the counter offered to heat up my dinner, but I decided to get it cold and I zapped it in the microwave when I arrived home. The Greek Pasta Salad was delish, which had firm bowtie pasta, crunchy peppers, feta cheese, & seasonings in a tangy oily dressing. The Chicken Parm Dinner was decent. The breaded chicken breast was tender. The ziti was very soft which was covered in a thick tomato sauce and melted cheese.
