I've been going here since I was a toddler in the late 1960s. Let me set your expectations, it's a little pricy. Newsflash It has to be..it's a one of a kind roadside stand open from May to maybe the week ofter Labor Day. The food is sligltly above average and the Summer help ? Usually teens and marginally adequate. However , the quality of the food is above average and it's not the reason you go. Think about it. It has no phone, no address and has thrived seasonally for 85 years. Locals are endeared and keeping coming back not only to support a local business. BTW the owner resides in Baltimore. They come back because of the atmosphere. You are in the last of America's road side stands built out of need during the Great Depression. It's an American story and use your higher mind to understand this, while you sit at a picnic table on a sunny country day in nature, sound of a babling brook in the background and consume a made to order meal made just for you. In the age of the coronavirus, Clamp's chugs implacably along, and my fondness for the place has only increased. They have been, perhaps, among the establishments best suited for this pandemic, seeing as how you're served through the window, and seating is pretty well spaced out. Distancing measures are sensibly enforced, with the cooperation of my fellow Nutmeggers, for which I am grateful. The essence of the experience - enjoying delicious food outside, in a lush, green, safe-feeling time-capsule, while watching traffic go by - has not changed one bit. If anything, it's even more worth the drive than it was before. Don't forget the salt, pepper, and fried onions on your burger; try combining the chili with the cheese sauce; *definitely* try the coleslaw - other places may phone that in, but Clamp's clearly takes pride in it. (I actually never order the fries or rings anymore, I like the coleslaw so much.) read more

This is your basic drive in burger joint but the food is VERY good! The burgers are simple. The chicken tenders in my option are the best around. CASH ONLY. Menu does not change so you know what to expect. They do close for a few hours each day in the afternoon so check times prior to going. read more

Classic roadside spot; great spot for this year as it's only outside dining. We've been meaning to get here for a long time, and a beautiful day called for burgers and outdoor eating. We ordered cheeseburgers with grilled onions, a chili dog with cheese, and sides of slaw and onion rings. The good - the onion rings were great - hot, crispy, fresh. The burgers were ok - I was hoping for some char from the grill, but they were a bit more greasy than charred - the grilled onions were a nice addition. The chili on the hot dog was great - unfortunately I was really disappointed in the skinless nondescript hot dog and the neon yellow cheese. Overall, it's a nice stop on a nice day when you are craving a bit of old Americana. read more

One of our favorite places for a quick burger or clamp strips.

Sept 1: They advertise that they are open for lunch from 11AM to 2PM but we drove out there today at 12:30 and they were locked up. All the chaulk boards were there but nobody around. There were 4 other cars that had also driven up and we were all disappointed. Seems like they have kids running it or they are going out of business and don't care anymore. read more

I've been coming here my entire life. So has my father. And my grandfather came here with HIS father when it first opened in 1939. So it's a yearly family tradition to come here. The burgers are best with the grilled onions, the onion rings are outstanding and the fried clams are great even though we're far from the ocean. Another favorite is the fish sandwich- add cheese to make it even better! (I know seafood & cheese don't go but this works!) Love the fact they still serve birch beer which isn't easy to find. Outdoor seating only but that adds to the charm and summertime feel of the place. Listen closely as orders are called out usually once. As the motto goes, No sign, no phone, just good food! Look for the white shack on the side of the road on Rt 202 traveling from New Preston towards New Milford. read more

I'm so terribly disappointed. I read the reviews and made a special trip to check it out. We each had a burger and we shared fries and onion rings. No one finished their burger (not because they were big but because they were tasteless). Fries were okay, onion rings not so much. I'd like to hope it was just a bad night based on the other reviews, but I won't bother going back to find out. read more

Finally found them open on a nice day. Need to know where they are or you're past (northbound) before you see them. Proper roadside grill menu. Little or no access to restrooms for handwashing or other comfort (eww!). Simple tables on the grounds, good room for parking. All the favorite dishes, toppings and condiments. Peaceful overlook, contrasts with the traffic flying by. Friendly and fast enough, cost was about right. I am really surprised that this is Clamp's first review, but a classic roadside hamburger stand that has been here for over 70 years. Little has changed about Clamps, nor should it. Clamps has been a favorite amongst many in Connecticut and has received recent notoriety with rave reviews from many in the media. The burgers and dogs are exactly what you would expect from a seasonal roadside stand at the entrance to Connecticut's Litchfield hills. Nothing too special here, but this is the reason why you eat here. Simple, classic food and outdoor dining atmosphere that is becoming harder and harder to find. The grill menu includes many other sandwiches besides burgers and dogs and the french fries are superb. Food was very good, staff rude about letting people use the restrooms. If you have it use a restroom, do not go here.

It's getting close to Clamps time again and I wanted to share one of their offerings that's not specifically on the menu: a cup/bowl of chili. If you like seriously, seriously meaty chili, you need to give theirs a try. You could get a hot dog with chili to taste it first, but if you're a fan, they'll sell you a cup/bowl. All of their other fare is quality roadside food (Muckie's dogs etc), but when I asked where they got their chili, I was told it was made on site. It's not super hot, so if you like a lot of tears and cleared out sinuses, bring your own ghost peppers. But if you like a meaty chili, that leaves a low, slow simmering feeling in your mouth and is delicious, ask for a cup/bowl. You'll be happy you did :D read more

My main criticism is that the seating areas are not accessible for people with mobility problems and the seating is standard issue plastic lawn chairs that are very uncomfortable. We decided to take CT magazines recommendation and try Clamps. As has been said before, it is a roadside burger stand. The burgers were good and the Onion rings were tasty, but is it one of the best burgers I have ever had, I am sorry to say no, not even close. I would love to try this place but it is never open whenever I go including on Saturdays in the summer?? I thought maybe it was a religious reason but then most Sundays this year they also have been closed? Very weird for a seasonal restaurant...I think I even went by on a Friday afternoon and well they are just never there?? So I usually go a few more miles up to the Gooseboro Drive in and they keep more consistant hours and have never been closed and the food is great. read more

This isn't your 8oz restaurant style burger - you'll want to order two - but the juiciness and flavor of a clamps burger is hard to best. Get it with cheese, fried onion and salt and pepper. My mother introduced me to Clamps for the first time in 1995, and I've craved their hamburgers and onion rings ever since. It was my favorite summer spot from the age of 11 until my early 20's. I don't get many opportunities to go up to New Milford any more, but when I do, you can bet that Clamps is my first stop. read more
