The Sandy Hook diner has been there for as long as I can remember in Newtown Connecticut. We used to take the kids there because they loved eating in the train car and we have also eaten in the main dining room. New brick sidewalks and reproduction lamp posts add a lot of charm to the area. There are 6 or 7 good restaurants within a 100 yard radius of the center. We went for breakfast, where I had the pancakes with bacon. The pancakes and bacon were very good, but the bacon wasn't served until I was already finished with the pancakes. The wife had a broccoli, mushrooms & cheddar omelette that was very good. The coffee was good quality. The men's restroom was in need of remodeling. Easily one of the best breakfast spots in Newtown! The diner is in an old train car which gives it a very homey and intimate vibe. Sat at the counter and ordered a Power Omelet-egg whites, grilled chicken, Swiss and fresh grilled mushrooms, spinach and tomato. Home fries are slices of potato, crispy on one side. I added a little Frank's Red Hot, all was very tasty. Good coffee, good wheat toast. Waitress was very nice and attentive. The place looks so tiny from the outside but it was surprisingly bigger once you walk in. I very rarely leave one star reviews. I live here in Sandy hook and I wanted to badly to like this adorable place. Unfortunately it was the worst breakfast I've had in a while. It was busy so I am not going to fault the very slow service. The omelette I ordered (cheddar and bacon) had no discernible cheddar. They asked if they could put cheese on and reheat - I said that's fine (seriously I'm not picky!) When I got it back about 5 minutes later it was inedible - the eggs had turned into like solid styrofoam and the cheese was like hard crisp. The grapefruit juice tasted metallic like it was off. The waitress took it off the bill which was very nice. My mother in law ordered multigrain bread but got white (they fixed it). My whole family that got sunny side up eggs said the grease on the eggs tasted strange. Honestly I wish I had a better review to leave, and maybe it was just an off day, but I can't come back. I was so disappointed. They solved some of the problems in the moment but there were too many to give it another chance. read more

The food is solid and, though our eggs were a tad overcooked, everything else on the plate was good. Order your 'over medium' eggs over easy and you'll be fine. Lunch is a good option, too.
