Food quality / price (value) rating 8.5. The atmosphere is antique diner. Located in the historic Sandy Hook village in Newtown, CT, a charming and beautiful, and walkable, 1800's village undergoing a renaissance that includes many upgrades. New brick sidewalks and reproduction lamp posts add a lot of charm to the area. There are 6 or 7 good restaurants within a 100 yard radius of the center. We went for breakfast, where I had the pancakes with bacon. The pancakes and bacon were very good, but the bacon wasn't served until I was already finished with the pancakes. The wife had a broccoli, mushrooms & cheddar omelette that was very good. The coffee was good quality. The men's restroom was in need of remodeling. There is also an old style 10 seat counter that was very nostalgic.

The guy who took my order was thrill and kinda judging me for wanting three pancakes of the cookies and cream one. But then again he told me it would be better for 2 not 3 because it is heavy and damn was he right, those pancakes got me through a hard hike but still after that hit harder than any anisong in a JJK anime. Ambiance has improved and it is as good as it always has been still really love this diner The woods next to the diner

Very unassuming from the outside. Dining room and counter seating. No clue what the dining room looks like, we sat at the counter. Great and friendly service. Inexpensive and good food. Don't need much more for a quick breakfast spot.

The staff and service here is amazing. Both of us have dietary restrictions and they accommodate us every week! The food is very good, a lot of locals constantly come here, and it's in a convenient location. Highly recommended!

Solid diner for all your breakfast needs. Packed with Sandy Hook locals enjoying breakfast on a Sunday morning. Good value for the food.

Salmon benedict, black raspberry milkshake, chilaquiles

Easily one of the best breakfast spots in Newtown! The diner is in an old train car which gives it a very homey and intimate vibe. We got the salmon benedict special, chilaquiles, and a black raspberry milkshake for a late breakfast and everything was delicious! Great service and kind staff. Can't wait to go back :)

A LIttle tiny place that has been there forever. Staff was friendly. They have homemade corned beef hash! Had normal breakfast foods plus specials. I had the french toast with apple cider sauce it was super good! Great prices. Cute local place.

Great breakfast! Mexi omelet, side of grits and poached eggs, bacon & wheat toast.

The staff is very attentive and kind. The menu is varied to the point of having difficulty choosing. We chose Hungarian stuffed cabbage and trio salad. HUGE portions are their signature. My meal came with a cup of soup & I chose matzo ball. Also, I chose baked potato and chickpea salad and a side tossed salad. I do not eat processed sugar and they had oil and vinegar to dress the tossed salad. We had 2 large pieces of challah bread with it and hubby had half of a lemon danish for his dessert, saving the rest for tonight. The bakery section is very impressive and I would have had a very hard time back in my sugar addicted days. This place is already on my calendar for next year's return. Unassuming from the outside, this local treasure opens into a cozy restaurant and event space with exceptional food and drink. Between the crackling fireplace, plush lounge seating, warm wood accents, sleek bar, and navy banquettes, the atmosphere feels both inviting and refined. The bartenders and entire staff were warm, polished, and genuinely attentive, creating an experience centered around the guest. My martini was aggressively shaken and served in a short coupe, topped with a delicate layer of ice crystals; despite the chill, the vodka-to-vermouth ratio was perfectly balanced. It was garnished with stellar Castelvetrano olives, freshly opened and proudly presented as an elevated touch to the classic cocktail. As for the fare, it was hands down one of the best meals I've enjoyed in quite some time. The Wagyu coulotte was cooked to perfection, accompanied by expertly prepared oyster mushrooms and crisp shoestring tallow fries. I could go on and on about the experience, but I'll simply say I can't wait to return. The thoughtful details and genuine hospitality made for an outstanding night out. My friend and I both had burgers, which were delicious -- but what were REALLY awesome were the french fries. Slim, perfectly cooked and salted -- hoo mama. Other reviewers have mentioned that the menu has more of an Asian influence -- this continues to be true, and in fact, when we return I'd like to try some of those more specifically Asian or Asian-inspired dishes. One thing I perceived, though, was that the pickles on the burger were brined in something that tasted almost seafood-y -- I'm allergic so I don't think it was actual fish sauce or something, but something that gave it a slight fishy taste, like when you have seaweed. Anyway, that was the only thing I didn't care for -- but it didn't bother me enough to not want to try again! We loved the ambience and the location was also super convenient with free parking in the back. I'll update my review after my next visit!

So, knowing that Sugo existed, I immediately routed us to their location, as this is a place that's been on my list of places to try. Short view? Everything started great. But did not follow through. The service was awesome. Our waitress, and forgive me as I cannot remember her name, was amazing. When we arrived we observed her interactions with her child and it automatically endeared her to us. And, as a server she was absolutely top notch. We understand from conversations, that she often works the bar. Either way she is awesome and the bright spot of our experience. The ambiance of the place was beautiful. Super refined looking, albeit with uncomfortable chairs at the tables. But I'm not looking for "comfort" per se, I'm looking for beauty. And this spot hits the mark. The we began ordering. Off the cocktail menu, I ordered their version of a pina colada and it was tasty af but definitely weak. My wife ordered a dirty martini with bleu cheese olives that she felt was weak. After those, we each ordered French martinis, that were super lacking in all flavor save for vodka. So strong, a bonus, but not good. As an app, we ordered their calamari which I order everywhere we go. This one lived up to the standard. Nice, big, meaty pieces of squid. A good breading, and a decent (if not underwhelming) sauce. I ordered their version carbonara as a main, and it was likewise, underwhelming. It was over buttered and over creamed. Which, if one knows anything about a traditional carbonara, it involves neither butter nor cream. I get that this is a gastropub and as such they will take liberty with ingredients and traditions; however, if I can make a better one at home... what's the point? My wife ordered the seafood grill which included branzino and shrimp. The branzino was delicious (but slightly over), but the shrimp stopped everything. The shrimp was rotten. On the plate it smelled like an unclean barn. I will say, we had to bring this issue to the attention of our server, and she kindly and appropriately comped our latter two drinks as a result. This made us happy as the drinks comped over the price of the plate, however, the smell is one that stays with us. Even at the time of this writing. We finished up our meal. I took home most of my carbonara as I felt confident I could make it taste good at home, but that's not the point of dining out. If and when I spend this type of money on food, I expect it to be right. This experience was not right. And if it weren't for the server, this review would be a 2 star.
