Despite 40% of the staff missing for multiple reasons, the staff handled caring for a full house - inside and out - as best as possible. The wait was worth every minute after I dug into the Linguini and Clams Portuguese Style. One of the best meals in a long time! Reminded me of summer meals in the Portguguese section of Fall River MA. Ralph prepares this dish from scratch and the small clams were fresh and fantastic. The portion can easily feed 2 and more. My family's more traditional eggs and bacon and toast dishes were perfectly cooked and delicious. Outside seating offers beautiful river views. Food taste amazing and the size is huuuuuuuge. The way Rauph talk about his food, it's just make you want to try everything. And THEY ARE GOOOOD and a generous portion. It was clearly evident by our first interactions with the staff at Sandy Hook Cafe that their quaint restaurant is a labor of love. Our waiter was elaborate in explaining each dish and his thought process with the ingredients the dishes embodied. The portion sizes were so big that we even took home to go trays of our side salads. The only downside was that it took almost an hour for our food to be served to us after we ordered. We aren't sure if that was normal as it was our first time there. Pride of ownership abounds. Very creative menu. Be patient for the quality of the lovingly cooked-to-order dishes. I promise it is worth the wait. Lots of unique specials created with fresh ingredients the chef hand picks clearly prepared with love. Small inside during cold seasons but large outside area overlooking river when weather warms up. Falafel wraps were a fav. Thai pasta salad was also enjoyed. The delicious peach or the pear salad can also be served over cauliflower pizza crust. The chicken pot pie was wonderful comfort food on a cold day. Pierogies and kielbasa made for their restaurant were also enjoyed at our table. And the value for the quality and quantity was excellent--most of the special dishes were around $20. Bonus for Foxon Park sodas!!! I believe they allow byob too. Only critique is to perhaps limit and better manage reservations. Owner felt bad we had a long wait despite our reservation (1hour). Plan ahead when expecting a reservation and let other tables being seated know if you are expecting a large party reservation before you seat them so they know or just don't take large party reservations during busy hours. How have I not been here yet!?? Easily one of the best meals I have had in Newtown. I have heard so many times how delicious the food is and how beautiful the atmosphere is. I sat outside and enjoyed some schnitzel and a go on park. The owner Ralph was SO nice and accommodating. With so many different choices on their menu I wasn't sure what to pick so I went with Schnitzel with potatoes, gravy, onions, red cabbage and beet salad. We just had the most amazing meal at the cozy Sandy Hook Cafe. My daughter had their Falafel wrap with a beautiful Greek salad, my husband chose a Morracan hash and I had the Chicken pot pie. I have to start with the super friendly inclusive who I believe to be the owners Ralph and John. Greeted me right when I came in. Ralph told me the specials and showed me one of them. Top all that off he actually asked my first name! As they would say in Cheers for me I love when everyone knows my name! I had an iced coffee to start with half & half and one pump hazelnut (Im diabetic). This coffee tasted so fresh and good. Next my meal and also one of the specials Ralph told me about. A three cheese grilled cheese (Im not sharing which cheeses go check them out to see). This grilled cheese had just the right amount of butter. When you get a grilled cheese in a Diner or restaurant there is so much butter it feels like your arteries may clog. This one had just enough butter that you feel like family made it. The one part of the meal I was worried about was the tomato soup. I am not the biggest fan of tomatoes or tomato soup. However, I finished the entire cup of soup. I actually burnt my tongue rushing to try it. The soup was so creamy and delicious and I finished the entire cup. No soup left behind here. The food is amazing for a small restaurant. The owner told us about ALL the specials. We shared the schnitzel & Portuguese clams. So much delicious food. Our meals started with a salad & ended with cannoli. We were told the cauliflower pizza was amazing from another table so we ordered it to go. We met my husband's cousin for brunch at the Sandy Hook Cafe and loved it so much, we went back the following 2 days. My first recommendation is to not order from the menu because their specials are unique, favorable, and a culinary masterpiece. My first meal was Crab Eggs Benedict. There was more than sufficient crab meat and the eggs were perfectly fried with a crispy edge along the whites. The next day I ordered French Toast. It towered about 2 inches and was filled with apples, raisins, and mascarpone. This French Toast was not too sweet which is just perfect for me. Since all our meals were over-the-top, we went back for the third day. That is when I ordered the frittata along with sweet potato hash browns. Just when you think things can't taste any better, you are served the best frittatas I've ever had. I would recommend that you share the dish, it's huge. As for the ambiance, the cafe is located right on a beautiful brook. We visited the Cafe in November and we were not able to truly enjoy the view sitting outside. Inside is small and I would allow for extra time to be served those amazing cook-to-order meals. This isn't the place you go if you're in a rush. Since it's cozy inside, we found ourselves speaking with other guests and enjoyed their company. As for the owner/chef, he was a pleasure to speak with and described his amazing meals perfectly. I only have one complaint. We live in Florida and I'm going to have to wait for our next trip to Ct. to enjoy my favorite place to eat. read more

We chose the booth by the front window box that was sweetly decorated for the holiday. There were a couple of other booths, a high-top table, and several two/four-top tables. Intimate space but a gigantic, interesting menu. Good for takeout as well. There is a small outdoor seating area overlooking the river. We were greeted by Ralph, the owner/chef. He was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, with an obvious passion for what he does, which made the whole experience even better. He proudly described all of the interesting specials (his unique creations) and it was difficult to decide as they all sounded simply wonderful. We went with the blackened eggs benedict with salmon special, and the breakfast burrito. All had fresh ingredients, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. What a gem of a place! We were helped and served by Ralph, one of the owners. He was so kind and helpful. The location is beautiful, and our weather was perfect for sitting on the back patio. My husband had an amazing apple, raisin, and mascarpone stuffed French toast. It didn't take him long to devour it. My children had a plate of bacon cooked to perfection, and a beautiful chocolate croissant surrounded by whipped cream. They ate every bite. I had an amazing blackened egg-topped avocado toast. It was unlike anything I've ever had. It had tomatoes, red onion, basil and goat cheese, and served on an English muffin and topped with a drizzle of balsamic. The seasoned potatoes were delish too.
