Went here for the first time, and am probably wavering between a 3.5 and a 4 -- but rounded up to 4 because of our lovely server, Louie. My friend and I both had burgers, which were delicious -- but what were REALLY awesome were the french fries. Slim, perfectly cooked and salted -- hoo mama. Other reviewers have mentioned that the menu has more of an Asian influence -- this continues to be true, and in fact, when we return I'd like to try some of those more specifically Asian or Asian-inspired dishes. One thing I perceived, though, was that the pickles on the burger were brined in something that tasted almost seafood-y -- I'm allergic so I don't think it was actual fish sauce or something, but something that gave it a slight fishy taste, like when you have seaweed. Anyway, that was the only thing I didn't care for -- but it didn't bother me enough to not want to try again! We loved the ambience and the location was also super convenient with free parking in the back. I'll update my review after my next visit! read more

3.5 stars We were on our way home from a road trip and were looking for a great lunch spot on our route, when we came across Foundry Kitchen and Tavern, which was located in the quaint town of Sandy Hook. As we drove through the village, we saw the restaurant on our left-hand side. It was housed in a historical brick building with a sprawling deck overlooking the Pootatuk River. It was a beautifully sunny day, so I immediately suggested that we dine outside. Unfortunately for us, the part of the balcony that was covered and offering live acoustic music was completely full. That meant that we were seated on the far edge of the patio with no shield from the strong sun or any ability to hear the tunes. In addition to the unideal seating, the food took a very long time to arrive, so I just sat there roasting. The server offered to move us inside, but we stuck it out for the view. I had ordered the Fattoush Salad with Chicken. The Mediterranean bowl included mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, kalamata olives, and fried naan croutons, though I had omitted the red onion that was also supposed to be in the blend. I had asked for the red wine vinaigrette on the side and wound up not using much of it. The salad was fresh and tasty, but the chicken had an odd preparation. It was not grilled (like I would have hoped for a healthy salad topper) and not deep-fried, but was roasted or pan-fried or something, which I had not expected. It had a crispy skin, but remained reasonably tender at least. I also grabbed a few of my partner's fries, which were excellent. After we wrapped up the meal, I stopped inside to cool off and use the facilities, which consisted of a singular, unisex bathroom in the corner of the rustic dining room. There was a bit of a line, and they could certainly have benefitted from additional restrooms. I really did like the antique atmosphere at Foundry Kitchen and Tavern, but I think that the heat just made the experience a bit challenging for me. First, parking. There is a small lot to the side of the building you probably won't find a spot in, and additional parking a building away and downhill. Not too far, but being an umbrella if there are predictions of inclemency. The building is beautiful. The doors look original, there are lights flowing up the staircase when you walk in, and dining is split between a dining room and bar area. Reservations are recommended. The food was great - the inside out burger was literally a bun flipped around on a burger, but the cheese was ample and it was juicy. Visited the Foundry before a show and we really enjoyed it. We got there a bit early but they were able to sit us right away. The server was friendly and helpful with menu selection. The ambiance is pretty much historic Americana. Will say that there was a sewage type order around hostess stand, that's near the restroom, but that seemed to disappear later in the evening, so assume there was an issue in restroom that they remedied. We ordered the short rib wontons for appetizer and it was well prepared and rich in flavor. I'd get that again and would even opt for larger portion of 10 wontons. My date ordered the Hawaiian Chop Salad. She really enjoyed the salad which came with seared ahi tuna that was cooked perfectly. I went with the waitresses suggestion and ordered a new item on the menu. It was a fried shredded pork burger type item. Not sure what to expect because I've never seen anything like it in a menu before, but it was really good. The fried pork provided a nice crunch to the sandwich had a nice overall flavor. My only disappointment was that the fries were not cooked enough and lacked a nice crispy bite. Overall, the Foundry had great service, decent drinks and good food. Made reservations for a girls night to celebrate a birthday party. Signs outside in the doors weeks a bit misleading and had me walking around the building twice. The restaurant was very crowded but once we were seated the servers were all very great. We tried some of the mock tails and cocktails and all were very good! We had the street corn nachos as recommended by fellow yelpers. The nachos were good not great we chose not to get a protein added so that may have been the missing part. The chips were fresh and ample amt of corn on it but seem a bit lack lasted on seasoning. Next we shared the short rib dumplings which were good and the meat was very soft. They got cold quickly though. Main course I had the flank steak w coconut rice He came out slice already which was a bit odd to me and the chimuchirri sauce was super sweet which I haven't experienced before. We use to enjoy going there until recently, They got a new chef and everything changed we always had the Vegan vegetable dumplings (steamed) they no longer do it they fry them instead. We had to send them back they were burnt beyond belief. Only have one size and they are frozen. The Vegan burger was salty.3 out of 4 of us were sick with the meal. Granted it was a slow Tuesday night in the dead of winter after a snowstorm.... But the experience was fantastic. The menu is back and better than ever. The special app tonight was a "stretched" pork dumpling which might be one of the best apps I've ever had. Normally I'm a sucker for the bao buns at Foundry but these are even better. My friends and I went here for Friendsgiving dinner and drinks and had a great time. Located in a handsome historic building and offering a view of the Pootatuck River, Foundry serves up a menu that is inspired by cuisine from around the world. It's a place where old meets new. Where else can you find an original 1850s bar and antiques AND short rib dumplings, vegan street corn nachos, or Thai green curry? Nowhere, my friend. (At least not to my knowledge.) We started with an order of the short rib dumplings. While the dumplings were a little hard and chewy on the outside, the short rib meat inside was plentiful and cooked perfectly. The sesame ginger and sweet soy sauces, pickled onions, and sesame seeds were a flavorful touch. I gave my jalapeños that also dressed the dumplings to my friends. (I like jalapeños, but my digestive system doesn't always like them.) Our cocktails were inventive and well-crafted. I had the Sage Against the Machine mocktail and it was a lovely blend of blackberry, sage, lime and sparkling water. I don't remember the names of the cocktails my friends had, but I know they enjoyed them. Both my friends had the Thai green curry and it smelled and looked really good; it was also a large portion and they both ended up taking half of theirs home. I had the Inside Out burger, which was a certified angus beef patty with truffle cheese, bbq sauce, bacon aioli, and pickled onions on a "flipped" (read: some of the top of the bun was cut off to make it look like it was inside out) brioche bun. The burger was delicious. Foundry really does have umami down to a science. Rather than fries, I substituted a side salad which was fresh and filling. Our server was attentive and polite. He seemed hopeful we'd order dessert but, alas, we were too full and wanted to save room for the next day's Thanksgiving dinners with our families. I stopped in here the other day with a group of girls after we had checked out some other local spots in the area and oh am I glad we did! The building is absolutely gorgeous, for starters. Such a great location and each room inside is beautiful. I popped into the bathroom which I can also confirm is very clean and nice as well. We all started off our girls day brunch with some drinks, I went with smells like tea spirit because I love a good tea drink as well as a good pun. Beautiful beverage and tasty too! We all decided to split some apps, and all of us were in agreement that the street corn nachos were BOMB and perfectly made. I mean perfect distribution of cheese and toppings to nachos. The dumplings were also tasty, and we are all still talking about the bbq wings we all split that had a unique smoky flavor. Our entrees then arrived and by that time the most I did with my hash entree was pop my egg yolk but I ate it the next 2 mornings for breakfast and it was superb. Came here on a drive back from NYC and found this place on Opentable. We got seated immediately and loved the vibe. A bit old school and yet a modern menu and modern pop music in the background. (Extra points for Call Me Maybe.) Service was a bit slow to start but picked up. Server was great when we spilled a mocktail to get a new one. I got a cocktail that was very tasty though a bit pricey at $14. The wings and calamari to start came out piping out and both were excellent. Lots of hearty pieces on both. We scarfed both down. The main dishes also had a number of standouts. The half chicken fried chicken platter was huge with terrific sides. I had the miso salmon which appears to be a regular. I loved the rice, salmon and bok choy. The sauce was a tad overdone in my view - just very rich and can kind of overwhelm the dish. But still terrific. The hula pork sandwich was also quite good. It's unique setting by the river makes for an enjoyable eating experience. The menu is wide enough to accommodate almost every preference while the service is attentive but unobtrusive. We have eaten there in different "seasons" and have enjoyed the different seating options from the outside tables to the rustic inner tables. read more

The location in an old mill building is quaint and interesting. We had drinks at the bar where I had the best old fashioned I have had all year. Twist of orange and Lucardo cherries, perfectly balanced, in an ample pour. I ordered the Panko fried tofu app with homemade fresh kimchi with a fabulous flavor profile. My wife had the classic burger and I had one of the best steaks I had all year. The Teres Major was tender, flavorful, served with a smoked carrot purée and marinated and seasoned with Korean influence. Worked so well with my appetizer. The salad had a Mexican flair. I was impressed with the Latin and Korean cushion. I can't wait to go back. My wife had the Mochi dessert which was to die for. Prices were very reasonable for this fabulous meal. This used to be my favorite restaurant in town, but a while back a new manager was hired who came from Hawaii and change the menu to some new Hawaiian flavors, which was fun at the time, but the menu has not changed in probably two years. The menu is heavily Geared towards Asian influence dishes, which is not what I would expect from a tavern. I miss the menu that would change seasonally with locally sourced ingredients and creative dishes. The last few times I have come back here I was left underwhelmed by the food. Gorgeous restaurant with delicious and creative pub food. The place is in an old house that also has a creekside deck, so you can eat both inside and out. Inside they have both table and bar seating. We came on a Friday night based on a recommendation from co-workers. They suggested the street corn nachos, which took over half an hour to come out. Louis, our server, was kind enough to notify the cook on his own accord and offer to comp our drinks or dessert. We could tell that he was waiting on most of the tables that night, if not all. The food was ok and it seems like they are short staffed even during one of the busiest times (dinner rush). The food was fantastic, but everything else was so-so. We made reservations to Foundry for a Saturday evening, since the last time we popped in they couldn't seat us. In my reservation, I requested a window seat. But I felt like Nate on Ted Lasso, and didn't get my request filled, despite the several open seats. The street corn nachos were enough for 3 people as an appetizer and loaded with goodies like corn, cheese, some jalapenos, and some mild pickled onions--a very tasty dish. For the meal, my girlfriend had the Classic burger but with an Impossible patty.. She said it was delicious and also loved the fresh brioche roll. It came with her choice of tater tots, which she elected to be seasoned with Old Bay. A nice choice. She said the tots were perfectly cooked and had a nice crisp to them. I had a half-order version of the Fried Chicken Dinner. It was huge. 3 or 4 well-battered and seasoned chicken pieces. It also came with small dishes of gravy, a biscuit, some mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and some greens which had the most delicious smokey flavor. I'm so glad I got this entree, and I'm glad I only got the half-order because I still had to bring most of it home. Prices were fair, parking was ample. The atmosphere in the restaurant is pretty nice but casual, and had the old historical mill/house vibe happening. With squeaky floors, and a tin ceiling you got the comfort vibe that accompanied the comfort food. They had a large drink menu of cocktails, mocktails, and beer. They had short ribs on the menu, and some dumplings that sounded good too. Plenty of Vegan options as well. The service was uncomfortably slow and inattentive. We didn't have water glasses or place settings on our table and had to ask for them. All the characteristics of a restaurant short on staff and equally overworked. Things to note: the hostessing service was a bit odd.. we stood at the hostess stand waiting for someone for nearly 10 min. FKT should allow you to specify whether you want outdoor or indoor seating on their opentable, many restaurants have the ability to do this. Overall, drinks were good, food was pretty good, service was great. Food and drinks are a bit overpriced for what it is, IMO. Bartender was working her ass off, kudos to her! I don't know how many times I come just to realize NO ONE is coming and needing to walk inside and basically ask myself up at the bar to be seated. It's a little bit crazy considering it is a good restaurant and their service is also good. It really is just the hostess issue. Sundays are probably the worst of it. They have multiple signs telling you to wait at the outside hostess stand but I promise you, no one is going to help you. Just go straight inside. If you are done with the outside stand for the day maybe just bring the sign inside? The bartender should not need to be hosting, making drinks and taking food orders. read more

Great food wonderful ambience! We have been to this restaurant often. The prices are not low but the food is worth it.

Like a total rookie, I waited until a few days prior to Mother's Day to start investigating brunch options. I don't recommend that approach. Thankfully, Foundry was more than willing to accommodate me, and my mom and I stopped by this past Sunday. The parking was super easy to locate/utilize - if there are no available spaces right by the building, there's a spacious lot a little further away. Unfortunately, it was pretty nippy/gloomy out, otherwise I would have tried to take advantage of the outdoor seating options overlooking the river. Regardless, the inside is pleasant as well, and we were seated in a dining room to the left of the entrance with lots of black and white pictures on the wall and tasteful wood paneling; several reviewers mentioned modern farmhouse vibes, and I second that sentiment. It was a little chaotic when we first came in and it took a few minutes to be seated. Not a big deal, and everyone we encountered was super nice and apologetic (which was unnecessary in my opinion but still a classy touch). At my insistence, we split the short rib dumplings app ($15), and ended up both getting the same entree, the bread pudding French toast ($18). The dumplings were very flavorful, and I can see why they're so popular. Texture wise it was a little too crunchy for my palate - I think there were pickled onions or some type of crispy cabbage in there. One of the main reasons I enjoy dumplings (and its sibling the empanada) is because they contain a lot of scrumptious items that I normally wouldn't eat because of texture, but they're basically melded together within the shell or dumpling so it's not as noticeable. That's not the case here, and your mileage may vary on this. I was a big fan of the bread pudding French toast, which is exactly what it sounds like. Great consistency, great taste, and the fruit compote/berries they used complemented the bread pudding well. It was super filling though, and I was pretty stuffed afterwards. My mom didn't finish hers, and I gladly took the leftovers and munched them on the way home. She also ordered the creme brulee ($10) for dessert (I thought it would be redundant to get dessert after the bread pudding) and enjoyed it. She was a little lukewarm on the fruit topping, which she didn't think meshed well with the rest of the dish, but I was able to use it for my bread pudding leftovers. The service was pretty good though it did slip towards the end (we had to notify the busboy to get our waiter for the check). We also had a pleasant conversation with I think the manager or owner at one point, who helpfully refilled my water without being prompted. The hospitality aspect was strong. Definitely a pleasant experience overall; the Asian-influenced menu is a unique twist for the area. I'd come back, especially to investigate the intriguing cocktail menu. read more

I came here with a friend during lunch hour, and we quickly got a table outside without waiting. They don't take reservations for outdoor seating, reservations are only for indoor seating. As for the food, there are plenty of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. We ordered the Sheet Pan Nachos - Mexican Street Corn (gluten-free), Madras Curry (gluten-free), and the Hawaiian Chopped Salad (gluten-free). Everything was delicious, though the nachos were a bit on the salty side. As for the service, it was great.
