First time at Nouveau Monde last night to celebrate our anniversary. Definitely an interesting place. They have pages and pages of wine to choose from. However, when my husband asked the waiter which one we should pick. We were expecting to hear the taste from the waiter instead of him simply pointing to the expensive one. No fault on his part; I don't think people would have tried all the wine on the list. Not much description for the wine on the menu. We ordered a charcuterie board, salmon, and short rib for our dinner. They were good but could be better. The pâté de campagne on the charcuterie board was just meh. The truffle honey glaze is a good touch to the salmon dish but still feels overpowering the fish. I love the chef using different textures to tie all the ingredients together. As for the short rib, the fried truffle parm polenta is an interesting choice, but I am wondering if the potato pavé will do a better job. read more

Excellent food with nice ambience, this is a neighborhood gem amongst all the "upscale" Newtown offerings. We had the mussels and crab cake to start and the pork chop and tagliatelle as mains. Both mains were excellently cooked with familiar flavors that were satisfying and filling. Came here randomly when we didn't feel like cooking. Was able to get a cute table by the fireplace and bookshelves. Huge comfy chairs were very nice to relax in. Service was lovely. Dined on a Saturday night peak dinner time and they did everything to make it still feel special. I started with the escargot served with a puff pastry on top that as just delectable. The clam chowder was also loaded. The hangar steak was cooked perfectly and delicious, the Parmesan crusted chicken had a great crust and was juicy. First time we have gotten a chance to visit Nouveau Monde and my husband and I were completely blown away! From the minute we stepped into the restaurant we were greeted by extremely friendly and professional staff and severs. They were helpful with recommendations on drinks and food throughout our wonderful meal. We enjoyed cocktails to start with their homemade focaccia bread. My husband LOVES focaccia bread so he was delighted to have this! We each got appetizers- the Crabcake and tuna tartar cones (a special). The presentation of the tuna tartar was SO unique, adorable really and was perfectly done as far as all of the ingredients in each bite! For entrees we had the salmon and pork chop entrees which were phenomenal. I am so upset I didn't get a photo of the salmon but it was cooked perfectly and all the flavors with it, made it a complete home run in my eyes. In the top two of all salmon dishes I am have ever had! I could eat that dish every week! My husband loved his pork chop equally. We ended the night with their homemade carrot cake and espresso. If you love carrot cake, I highly recommend Nouveau's! We were SO impressed with Nouveau and upset it took us this long living in town to make it here. We loved everything start to finish. Huge shoutout to our waiter who was just beyond amazing and made the experience even more exceptional. Nouveau Monde is a Phenomenal restaurant and so happy it is right in our town. I think this is one of the best restaurants in CT. We enjoy dining out and are always looking for something new. This did not disappoint. The atmosphere is beautiful and simple. Every thing has a perfect place. The cocktails were well thought out, like old favorites with a "twist". The food was outstanding. We were with friends and we never stop talking, when our entrees hit the table it was complete silence for 15-20 min. By the time we all looked up our plates were clean and we just started laughing. Everyone had the same mantra. "This was one of the best things I've ever eaten." It is very pricey, but you can taste why. read more

Located in the Sandy Hook restaurant district, this is just one of several very good restaurants within a few minutes walk. This restaurant has morphed from a sophisticated lounge kind of place into a white tablecloth experience. The menu is fairly simple. I had the Pork Chop, which was a little fattier than I'd have preferred. The chop sat upon a Spring Succotash and grits. There wasn't anywhere near enough grits. No salad or additional vegetables were included, but there was a decent fresh bread served with the entree. The wife had the vegan meal, King Trumpet (mushroom) & Lentils. We also opted for tap water, which was nasty tasting by anyone's standards. We sat at the bar, where Nico catered to our every need, including turning me on to a new cocktail "Mango En Fuego", basically a spicy mango margherita that was excellent. The main restaurant serves dinner until 9:00 pm, but they have a "speakeasy" bar (that smells a little musty) behind the main venue that is open until 2:00 am some nights. A person that appeared to be the owner sat in the corner of the bar basically taking up the three best seats at the bar, while just constantly watching everybody. My daughter and I visited here around 5:30-6, after a trip to Aquila's Nest Vineyard about five minutes away. No reservation -- but definitely recommended. The hostess was gracious and was able to squeeze us in. Worth mentioning here we weren't at all rushed as a result. In fact, service was excellent all around. As we had an appetizer at the winery, we went straight to our main courses: I had black cod with ginger wild rice, pecan, citrus curry emulsion and she had tagliatelle with peas and guanciale. Both were excellent. For dessert, mini cannolis-- and bonus dessert snack of two delicate macrons came with the check. The ambiance was "moody" -- a very dark gray painted interior played well with the intimate atmosphere. I believe the building was the former Sandy Hook Post Office, but you would never know. Delightful place. A bit pricey: Our meal with two glasses of cabernet before tip was $125. I will definitely return as the food was amazingly prepared. read more

New to Newtown restaurant with an extensive wine list and sommelier on property. Parking is quite tight but there is another lot that you can park at. The restaurant is a conversion of an older house and the decor is very quaint and includes tray ceilings. The servers were kind but a bit unsure about menu questions. We had the Thai beef appetizer and the grilled octopus. The beef skewers were flavored very well and the meat was tender same for the octopus it had great flavor with a very robust red sauce. My one friend had the salmon that had a ginger and fresh herb seasoning, I had the pork chop with cheese grits. The pork chop was super juicy and cooked to perfection. I kept the hot honey on the side and enjoyed the pork chop and veggies by themselves. My third friend had the Parmesan crusted chicken which had nice flavor but was a bit tough. Nouveau Monde's menu is especially creative, the food is fresh and delicious, the atmosphere warm and cozy and the staff delightful; in short, the best restaurant in Newtown by far. The new fall menu was a delight. Their vegan entrees are always unique and it was a very pleasant surprise to discover a fabulous (and plentiful) gnocchi dish for this season's offering. The fish was incredibly flavorful - better even than a recent visit to Purdy's "Farmer & the Fish" - which is saying a lot! Stayed local for date night and were blown away by the accommodating staff, tasteful food, and warm ambiance of Nouveau Monde. Their wine list is near 50 pages long offering a wide variety. Nouveau Monde fell short of five stars for us due to the small size of some of the appetizers. The stuffed dates were incredibly unique but we wish we were given more than three to share between the two of us. We highly recommend the pork chop... it was served over the most delicious grits! Should be at least $$$ if not pushing the limit on $$$$. I have been here 3x and the food is always good as well as the service. They've recently (recent for me) changed to an all table decor versus the previous decor of some tables, couches, coffee tables etc. That you can get in the rear "speak easy" called Antonio's. We did not eat at Antonio's and will try in the near future. Nouveau Monde (NM) offers a full function restaurant with extensive wine in a "Bistro" style. Antonio's (NM's little brother or sister) sits out back of NM and offers appetizers, desert and has taken on the personality of NM couch and bar feel but you can't order full meals there, only at NM's. They seem to offer a similar extensive wine, and drink list including draft and bottled beer. NM's staff and chef(s) were extremely accommodating to my wife who is Gluten Free. Had dinner last night here. The environment was like eating in a high end country inn, warm and comfortable. Service was exceptional. The special on their wine bottle was very reasonably priced and was quite good. We shared the gem salad which was well dressed. The free focaccia bread was a nice touch and delicious. The pork chop and black cod entrees were excellent and above the quality you usually get in this area. The banana/coffee pie dessert was decadent, good to share but who would want to. I've been coming to this restaurant for over eight years. I've celebrated milestones here. I've brought friends, family, and out-of-town guests. And while the food has always been excellent, I've long tolerated the rushed, pretentious service because I believed the experience, overall, was worth it. But after what happened on my birthday, I'm done. We were a party of four, seated promptly at 5 for what was meant to be a joyful, meaningful night. The staff knew it was a birthday celebration. We ordered generously--cocktails, appetizers, entrées, desserts--spending over $500. And yet, well before we'd finished, the message became crystal clear: we were being pushed out. Three of us were done eating and they cleared our plates before the fourth was even close to being done, and this was early on in the night. He was asked 3 more times if he was done eating, and I felt so uncomfortable for the way they were rushing him. The same rushing happened with dessert, and soon after water glasses were removed without asking. I had about 2 sips left of wine and at 6:50, our waitress informed us--without apology--that we had ten minutes to vacate the table. No grace. No acknowledgment of the occasion. Just an abrupt, transactional push out the door. The website says for a party of 4 there is a 2 hour time limit, so while I don't believe any restaurants should have any limits like this, we had not even hit their limit yet. We still had 10 minutes, and would have clearly finished in that time.We weren't in any way lingering, just finishing a last glass of wine. After eight years of loyalty, I walked out of the restaurant feeling rushed, dismissed, and frankly--embarrassed. That's not how you treat regulars. That's not how you treat anyone, especially on a birthday. There are countless restaurants in this area with great food. What separates the great ones is hospitality--something this place has clearly forgotten. We will not be back again. read more

We love coming here. Definitely suggest making reservations before coming. If you can't find reservations online, call the restaurant, the staff was pleasant and helped to accommodate us. I'm sure they will gladly help you; if they can ofc. The staff is pleasant, professional, and always checked in on us. We were looking for a different wine than we normally have, they sent over the wine sommelier , we explained what we were looking for, and omg AMAZINGly delicious. At first we were scared but he nailed it! The food is delicious and I was pleased to see the GF options. We did have late reservations and the kitchen ran out of the chicken entree. But it was no big deal to us. The restaurant is a bit dark but it goes with their ambiance. They also have outdoor dining if you wish- but with CT summers I much prefer the A/C . I tried their flourless cake which is GF, it was creamy and delicious! My friend had the carrot cake, ate it all with no complaints lol. We will be back again. Their menu changes every season. I love this spot in Sandy Hook. Found it a couple years ago and I am becoming a regular. The seating is comfortable and intimate, set in what seems to be an old house. Though they have refit the place perfectly, with a large bar area and just enough tables to accommodate without being too busy. The food is excellent. I have tried most of the menu, but tonight I had the pork chop. Wrapped in bacon, served with cheddar grits and Brussels. Cooked perfectly. The Thai beef skewers, crab cakes and baked Mac and cheese are excellent starters. And the carrot cake is one of my favorite desserts. Sorry for the mediocre picture. I always come here with family and I forget to get the good ones. I will definitely be back and will add some better pics. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Went here for the first time tonight and was surprisingly not blown away like I assumed I'd be based off of what I've heard/been told. We ordered the deviled eggs and mushroom flatbread for an app. The deviled eggs were fine, definitely nothing special. The mushroom flatbread however, was INCREDIBLE. I probably should have just ordered another one instead of an entree. The drink I got was the mango en fuego and that also was very good. Now my entree and the service is where I felt let down the most. I ordered the ricotta cavatelli. Quite literally tasted like something I could have ordered at Olive Garden. For an expensive pasta dish, I expected way better flavors/something with more of a wow. The service was also an area I felt let down in. The waiter was quite lack luster, didn't seem like he wanted to be there and didn't give helpful recs when we asked about the menu items (his response was "everything is good"). I'd expect A LOT more from a $500 dinner. Definitely a bummer! read more

I hate to be so critical, especially because I'm not from the area, but there are enough reviews here to even it out. My salmon entree was so good that it single-handedly salvaged the visit, but in all other respects the experience was underwhelming. The duck entree was forgettable. The desserts were unimpressive. The ambiance was just strange, as if Wayfair had opened a pop-up restaurant filled with closeout items. Our service was genuinely distracting, alternating between hyperactive and sullen depending on the staff. (I know staffing is especially difficult right now -- just try to tone it down!) In the middle of our meal we had a distant acquaintance stop by and rave that this was the best restaurant in Connecticut, so perhaps just a fluke that we had such an uneven experience. I was looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate my birthday and came across Nouveau Monde on Yelp and made a reservation. It seems to be an house renovated into a restaurant. It's cozy and well decorated - great ambiance and mood. The entrance is a bit confusing because there is no host station/waiting area. We arrived early and waited until our table was ready. The waitstaff was very nice, however, making sure we were comfortable while waiting. Drinks/wines seem to be their specialty - they had a sommelier available and also 3 menus full of wine. As far as dinner goes, we had two apps and three entrees to share. We had the shrimp&grits and lamb meatballs as apps, and pork chop, cavatelli, and chicken as our entree. Overall the food was good, I could tell it was made well with good ingredients. However, everything was so salty, which made it hard to eat without chugging some water. Our waitress was very attentive and replaced our plates/utensils several times and we got macarons as a complimentary dessert for my birthday. We were truly amazed by the attention to detail, the outstanding service, and the incredible cuisine. Our server explained to us the menu items as well as their extensive wine selection. We ordered some cocktails and an appetizer. Our cocktails were well made and we enjoyed them. Our appetizer was a smoked trout avocado salad. The salad was outstanding. Unlike anything we have had before as far as flavor profile and complexity and we absolutely loved every bite. For dinner, we ordered two great dishes - a Parmesan crusted chicken dish and a pork chop entree. Honestly all I can say is wow. Every bite. Just absolutely delicious and perfectly balanced. Of course with how our experience had gone thus dated we knew we wanted to have dessert. We ordered a slice of carrot cake to share and French pressed coffee. The carrot cake was delicious- perfectly moist, great balance of spices, and the cream cheese frosting was wonderful. I never drink black coffee but my husband encouraged me to try it. They source their coffee from a coffee shop called Shearwater. It was excellent and complimented the sweet carrot cake so well. We cannot say enough how much we enjoyed our experience at Nouveau Monde. It's an incredible restaurant and definitely worth visiting again and again. After dinner we checked out NM's speakeasy bar called Antoinette's. It is located directly behind NM. Definitely a must. Such a great concept, amazing vibe, loft type bar and so nicely designed. Cozy restaurant for a celebration dinner, so opted for this dining treat to mark another anniversary. They offer SO MANY wines by the glass, and Jeff, the Sommelier was super! Overall I rated this a 4.5+ experience for the warm and home-like atmosphere, fabulous wine selections, fresh and interesting house-made menu, food presentations including amazing desserts, and attentive service by staff! I'd also mention to expect a higher average price for dining; entrees range from ~$25-35, and if you add a salad or app starter plus drinks, the cost isn't inexpensive. But definitely a cool place for a business meal, wine connoisseur, HH (4-7p weekdays) or group event! FYI, they're open Wed-Mon. I really appreciated Jeff's understanding of wine and candor for taking care of his guests! While we searched the wide menu for a nice, reasonable Cab, his recommendation was perfect, which was excellent both in taste and value, thank you! Lots to choose on their menu. For starters, ordered the Melanzane, crispy eggplant with fresh Burrata, house roasted peppers, basil and balsamic, fantastic! The Wedge salad was very good, nice presentation. Wish I could've also tried their Clam Chowder, Mussels or Crab cake, sounded excellent! For entrees, tried their Duck special and Rockfish. Duck was very tender and mild, served with Peruvian roasted potatoes and braised Lentil mix - I thought the sides made the plate 'dark' and were OK, but I think a whipped potato side and colorful vegetables would've elevated the whole dish for me...but I'm just the customer not the chef. I thought the Rockfish was quite dry and heavily almond crusted. Perhaps it was not what I expected; so I suggest the Salmon or Scallops for seafood. The traditional Steaks probably would've made a good pairing for the red wine too. Finished the meal with the Banoffee pie and a French press coffee (so smooth!). Pie had an Oreo crust shell, layered with Dulce de leche, fresh bananas topped with whip cream and fresh strawberry, YUMMY! Stumbled upon this place last year while searching for dinner fairly late after work. I just returned again this past week and it was even better the second time. Enjoyed the mushroom bruschetta and lamb meatballs, which were my favorite, and had the ricotta cavatelli. BUT The limoncello cake is the real star of this place!!! By far the best dessert I've ever tried. I love the pots of coffee they give as well. The living room vibe is very cozy, however someone of the dining room seating is not the best for sitting and having a meal. I find the bar to be the most comfortable spot to sit and eat. Perfect spot for a date night or low key meal, and the waitstaff has always been so nice, efficient and accommodating! No clue whether Sandy Hook was a hoax or happened in another timeline, dimension or reality but do know this place rocks in whatever reality it is I'm enjoying a Chardonnay on the idyllic patio. Love the vibe, love the ambience, enjoy the sweetness that is the enclave of Sandy Hook. Everything I have dined on here has been fantastic as well. Easy highway access off I-84 to break up a drive too. I had given it 5 stars but downgraded after being only customer trapped in place without electric thanks to freak storm (probably happened as I called out timeline stuff earlier). My waitress was 5 stars but owner not welcoming. Personally, I'd be warmer to lone customer and figured it happened for a reason. Oh well... p.s. freak storm made me think about alleged Truman Show dome we may live in, but that's another story... read more

On our wedding anniversary date, we found that our usual restaurant for this celebration had been booked out for an event, so we quickly had to find a suitable substitute and we opted for trying out a new place, in nearby Sandy Hook. At first we were worried it would be too upscale and refined for us to fit in, but that was a fleeting doubt as we were graciously made welcome by the friendly staff as soon as we came in. The ambiance was intimate and romantic, the service was spotless, and the food was delicious (parmesan crusted chicken with mushrooms and risotto; pork chop with fancy grits/mash and sweet Brussels sprouts). Not being wine drinkers, we tried instead a Cosmo cocktail that was quite good as well. We were very happy that our unscheduled visit to this new place turned out to be an enchanting experience.
