Mr Mac's Canteen is a "Greasy Spoon" with quick service & very reasonable prices. But I have to disagree with most of my fellow Yelpers, sorry, it's not the Second Coming. Food was average, kinda meh, to be honest. The only thing that really stood out for us today was the Pina Colada milkshake, that was excellent. Staff was friendly also, but the only reason we'd stop in again would be for one of those awesome milkshakes. read more

Fantastic place for a no frills lunch or dinner that's tasty. Really good burgers, great chili, all food prepared quickly and served without missing a beat. Pricing for all the items on the menu is a complete throwback to 1990s. Two people having a burger, drink and splitting fires at five guys is a $40 occasion (in 2025). At Mr Mac's we had two large chili burgers, a cheeseburger, a fries, two drinks and a large Peach shake and it was barely 30 bucks. By today's standards that's an amazing deal. Will be back to try some of the items listed on their "Sea" Food menu board. This is a Great place. read more

Great greasy spoon hole in the wall. Located in a shopping plaza I drove pass this location Multiple times due to appearance only. Boy was I surprised. Food was great and the ashes too. We had a bison burger and a kid's cheeseburger meal. Both sandwiches were very moist and had tons of flavor. My husband and I shared the boneless rib sandwich and it was very good too. What an amazing spot!! If your driving past or maybe you live nearby, you need to check out the canteen. I got the double cheeseburger and Tater tots, I would get the same again in a heartbeat! My family and I LOVE Mr. Mac's! anytime we're in the area we always stop here! They have a huge menu of classic favorites like burgers, hot dogs, patty melts, chicken sandwiches, and more! The chili is OUT OF THIS WORLD especially if you're a spice lover like me. The food is classic but you can't go wrong with anything they have on their menu. How can you not love a place with Christmas decor such as this? Seriously I have only been here a few times and that is usually in warmer weather because the place has outdoor seating and we like to eat outside. They have burgers, sandwiches Fried Clam strips. The pricing is extremely inexpensive and it is particularly nice in the summer. But their Holiday decor is fantastic..worth a trip just for that. Good customer service as well. read more

On a busy Friday, we both had a hankering for good fish 'n chips, so we went to Mr. Mac's Canteen and were very happy! We got a 2 pieces fish dinner with french fries, cole slaw, tarter sauce and a pickle, which we split. We also ordered their 1/3 pound cheeseburgers with tomato, fried onions and mayo. OMG! First of all, they are following all the Covid-19 precautions, with thick plastic barriers, markings for social distance and using every other booth to keep distance. The place is clean and tidy, and the crew was observed working hard, focused on getting our food prepared well and delivered FAST! Mr. Mac's is one of our favorite places and we keep going back! The best. I went to there because it was the only place in town that had a liver and onion grinder and I was craving liver. Was very good. Days later, my GF and I were craving a grilled cheese with tomato and we decided to try that. Was perfect! We make our own and we couldn't have made it any better. They place the cheese over every bit of bread (watched the cook) and there was more than enough tomato. Then we decided to try their "loaded" cheeseburger. THE BEST! I'm over 51. I've had a lot a cheeseburgers in my life. Never this good. Wow. This is a glowing review because they deserve it. Heading there now for two loaded cheeseburgers and two grilled cheeses with tomato for the 5th time. So far, every time has been perfect. wow read more

Best burger joint in CT! You can't beat Mr macs for fast food made fresh in front of you. There are 2 locations one in Monroe and milford, Owned and run by the 4 Mcpadden brothers. I know them personally as I worked there in high school and they really care about their business and will remember your name. My go to is usually a double bacon cheeseburger with chicken tenders and fries. For breakfast they have the best bacon egg and cheeses around. Nice crispy bacon on a buttered and toasted Portuguese roll with egg and cheese. They are also pretty famous for their hot dogs and Chilli as well. read more

The chili dog at this place is award winning, but I've been coming here my whole life for the cheeseburger and the onion rings. The rolls are always fresh, soft bakery rolls, and the patty is an old-fashioned thin serve cooked to order and dripping with cheese. As for the sides, I would recommend an order of fries and one of onion rings, as both are delicious. The fries are just standard crinkle fries, fat and freshly made, but the onion rings are the best I've ever had. They're nice and thick without being sickeningly over-battered or greasy, and they are probably the only side dish I've ever tasted that neither needs a little extra salt or a lot of ketchup to cover something up. Furthermore, nothing sits around - they make your food in front of you, and it is perfectly done and molten hot when it comes out. Even if there's a crowd of people (and there often is), everything is made fast and well. This is a delicious, clean and neat and justly famous local business. read more

This place is a few minutes from my house but I never go because they didn't take credit cards - now they do! We ordered burgers and a kids chicken fingers meal yesterday and we were all pleased. It is your typical greasy spoon canteen and will hit the spot if this is what you are looking for. The kids meal gets 5 stars because they have some fun trinkets in the meal. I've had food here a few times but I really have to say that the onions rings are all star. read more

In reading the other review here, I assume they don't get Connecticut dog joints. Having grown up at the Merritt Canteen, Jackie's, Cricket and the rest, Mr Mac's does the Connecticut hot dog tradition proud. Great Hummel Brothers franks, kick'n Chili, brown mustard the way god intended it and crispy bacon bits (not the shredded bacon some others try and pass off). Dogs go in the fryer to crisp the natural casings - perfection. While we could argue about them vs. Swanky vs. Super Duper etc. There are a lot of great hot dogs in CT and Mr. Mac's is one of them. read more

I am not from the area, however whenever I am anywhere close to Mr. Mac's, I HAVE to go. Their sausage egg and cheese with a hash brown topper, is literally the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had. They have a lot of other menu options such as hamburgers/cheeseburgers (very good), hot dogs, mac and cheese bites, etc etc - and all for under $5. Atmosphere/Appearance: Set out the way and right off Route 25 is this gem which is dedicated to the firefighters all over the country. Mark (the owner) is a volunteer firefighter himself so thank you for your service my good man. But the restaurant is large with a large outdoor seating area filled with umbrellas to block the sun or the rain if you're outside! Once inside you feel welcomed due to it's open concept, bright lights and upbeat music. The staff greet you as soon as you enter so that's always a plus. All over the restaurant you'll see New York Giants memorabilia as well as stuff dedicated to firefighters including a memorial table toward the back. I loved this. Service: Like I mentioned before the staff are super friendly and on multiple visits the owners Laurene and Mark chatted us up just making sure we were well taken care of! Food: We've been here multiple times so I've been able to try out a few things! The first of 6 wing flavors were the Lemon Pepper Buffalo which were fried to perfection with a nice crisp skin from the light dredge on them. It was a 50/50 marriage on the flavor between a lemon and Buffalo sauce. It was so well executed! Next up was the Honey Hot Tamale which blended Mexican spices with a sweet-nectar like sweetness. It also came served with pickled hot peppers, but the wings had a good spicy kick to them! Again, still crispy and a huge size. Next up was their Garlic Parmesan which was a mixture of wet and dry ingredients. Crispy skin and FULL of flavor. With many of these kinds of wings at other places, the flavor comes off so light, but these hit the nail on the head! Next up was the Asian Zing. Gorgeous, shiny wing with crispy skin, but this one had a sweet Thai chili flavor with some Szechuan pepper flavor, but it had more sweet than spicy. 2nd to last is their off-menu flavor called Cherry Pepper Gorgonzola! It's a MESSY wing, but OMG. This comes SLATHERED in a acidic, creamy, natural cheese flavor then covered with cherry peppers and spices. It tasted like a good pasta dish, but with wings! Lastly, we tried the hottest wing on the menu... the 911. Lol. These came out lookin' gritty, nasty and like they're supposed to when they're supposed to be stupid hot. Lol. These were still delicious and presented no immediate heat, but then boom. The heat ramped up and kicked in HARD. These were nothing I couldn't handle though, but super hot and topped out at about an 8.3 on the Weavi Heat Scale. Value: Come in on Wednesdays for $1.00 wings! You can't beat it! Other than that, the prices are extremely reasonable for excellent quality food. In conclusion, I love this place and I wish it were closer so that I could frequent it more often, but that's nobody's fault but my own! Lol. They may be seeing me pretty soon...

Went back today 10/08/15- totally different experience than last time and I will NOT be back. for one the burger was not nearly as good the hot dog was disgusting, mushy bun, barely cooked. but the problem was with the girl behind the counter, she was so busy complaining about a previous customer to the other female employee that she didnt pay attention to me, the food was NOT good today and service AWFUL. this girl should not be talking about other customers and how she hates them while another customer whom is a good nice customer like me is trying to get help with their order. totally turned off and done. read more

WOW!!! Haven't been to this place in over a year and boy - didn't realize what I was missing. Still had liver, bacon and onion grinder on the menu which is extremely hard to find these days ( I guess with good reason - an acquired taste!).
