I've been frequently talking online about hot dogs this year, and people kept bringing up Bridgeport's Merritt Canteen and their "we don't give refunds for our spicy chili" hot dogs. Curiosity got the better of me and I finally visited, just for a chili cheese dog. They also have breakfast, burgers, wings, sandwiches and fried seafood etc. The first thing you should know is Merritt Canteen is one of the very few CT places to score a Guy Fieri Diners Drive Inns & Dives visit. That clearly means something. The atmosphere was clean and classic. Service was friendly and efficient. I believe MC uses Hummel Hot Dogs, which is a quality dog. It was well cooked. The bun was fresh. The presumably American Cheese slice was melted over the top of my chili cheese dog. This part was way above average. Which brings me to the chili sauce. I don't have the recipe for this sauce. So I'm giving you my impression and not stating facts. The sauce, tastes like a thick meat gravy, with a generous amount of hot pepper sauce such as Tabasco added. There wasn't really a noticeable meat component. Maybe that gets electrically blended into the sauce. I don't know, but I didn't get a classic ground beef vibe here. I understand some people love this sauce. I suspect those same people are big Tabasco fans and liberally add it to most of their meals. Me, I'm one and done with the chili sauce. I like nuanced spice. This was not that. I did finish the dog, but my resolve wavered. It's hard to discount the impact of the chili sauce in scoring this review because it was the dominant force of the chili dog. But the truth is, the dog, melted cheese, bun, service, and atmosphere were all good. So I'll score this a 3.5 and round up to 4 Stars. read more

Man do I have memories of this place coming as a kid! I was temporarily staying in the area so was able to hit up the canteen frequently. Staff were soooo friendly and great! I had a few meals from here. Mainly a bunch of BEC on a Portuguese roll (my weakness). I've also tried their mozz sticks and fried shrimp both were good. I've been coming to the Merritt Canteen since I was a kid, it's comfort food for me. Can't go wrong with anything they make, I usually come for a burger and a dog. Buns are always fresh and their chili is what I love the most. They forewarn you no refunds on it because of how spicy it is, they were not stingy with the amount they give you. I do miss the days of ordering at the two counters that divide the place, was a covid change. I do feel like the hot dogs got a little smaller, but could be just my opinion. Came here with few friends and was seated immediately. I got their classic Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, mayo. The burger came with soft and nicely toasted buns, layered with fresh lettuce and tomatoes, white cheese, and a juicy smashed patty. It was not heavy or overly greasy. The portion was smaller than I had anticipated, but a solid burger nonetheless. The Curly Fries were okay and could be seasoned more. Overall, it's a very homey and cute restaurant with lots of history. I would definitely recommend trying it out! A staple in the community for over 50 years, one of the few still standing as it was passed down from one generation to the next. Definitely something for everyone on this menu! The food is made fresh on the premises, owner operated. There have been nice additions to the menu in recent years, the traditional hamburgers , hot dogs, fries, onion rings, egg sandwiches were what made the business but so much more added. This is owner operated and the owner takes pride in quality and consistency, if it's not right let him know and he will fix it! The little Spongebob lady that runs the front end of store like its the Krusty Krab was snotty, extremely rude and just unpleasant. I recently placed an order and received uncooked fries. So I brought them back and explained the situation. I didn't want a refund, I just asked for fresh fries. She said the fries were "fine" and if I wanted a new batch, they would have to charge me. My thing is.. Its literally just fries, it's not like they couldn't accommodate me and just toss a few in the fryer for a couple minutes. I been coming here for yearsss and she's always been rude and unprofessional. I know they say "if the service is horrible the food is good" but even then food has saved fell off. I bit into a fried oreo, felt it slimy & raw as I was chewing it so I spit it out & called the waiter over to show them. The manager walked over & said "that's just how the dough is because it's frozen, they just put it to fry". I asked her to come back to show her a perfectly cooked oreo on my plate. She said she's not able to take them back cause we already bit into it. Obviously, I was just looking for a replacement, or something, not for them to refry the oreos. I've never experienced such horrible service at Merritt Canteen before & that lady has been working there longer than I've been alive. They have moved the registers out in *front* of the counter and the service is slower. Pedestrian slow. And there's little room left to stand - let alone sit, because now you'd think you're moving through a teller line at People's Bank. On a Friday night with no booths taken, I waited 15 mins for three short order sandwiches?! This is basic burgers and grilled chicken we're talking about here - not prime rib and beef Wellington. They actually were more efficient during the peak of Covid. The portions are unbelievably small and they are exploiting the population here in the northern part of Bridgeport they should be ashamed of themselves. I came here last night because I had the taste for fried fish and I was watching the show with Guy Fieri from Triple D(The Food Network) and decided to come here. I haven't been here in maybe ten years so I wanted to come to my old stomping ground. When I ordered my food, I was surprised because when you order a platter of fish and chips, you only get one piece but the employee told me it was a nice size piece of fish so I decided to get the fish anyway. I ordered takeout and the food was the delicious. The one piece of fish and fries were enough and satisfying. The only thing I didn't like about the fish was the coating. Still taste as good as it did 10 years ago. Mac and cheese bites will change your life. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Bison burger always has a great meat to fat ratio. Got back yesterday to visit and wanted to go to some places that I remembered as I grew up here in Fairfield county CT. The quality and taste that I remember has not faded. You go any where else to have a clam roll you, are going to get clams that are over cooked and roll around in you mouth like rocks breaking teeth. They have the register right in front of the entrance instead of behind the counter. There is a sign that says line starts here but it's so unorganized. The Merritt Canteen has really gone downhill. Not only in the quality of their food but their service as well. I've ordered from this place via telephone, their own Merritt Canteen app, and Ubereats. Every single order has been incorrect. CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE YOU LEAVE. Also, beware on their own app there might be a requirement snuck in that doesn't allow you to proceed without an additional selection. When this happens I have to pay additional money for something that I don't even want AND they don't even put it on my order!! Ex: chili cheese fries on the app forces you to add an additional topping for $1 extra. Recently came here with some friends and ordered some cheeseburgers with toppings. Burgers were meh. Almost like they were over cooked or something? We also ordered some chili cheese fries, steak and cheese, and Mac n cheese bites. The steak and cheese was especially weird, again seemed over cooked. A Bridgeport staple, if you live here and you haven't been here, it's time. The brutal dog Is brutal, I'd stay away, but all the other greasy spoon suspects are delicious. I love the patty melt but I warn you it is a gooey mass that swims in buttery bread. The fried clams are tasty as are the bison burgers, regular burgers and dogs. Ordering inside, when we're back to that, is a kind of treat because the counter person NEVER writes down your order, for one item or twenty, but they never make a single mistake. I have been going to Merritt Canteen since I was just a little kid. Its not the kind of place where the pictures are very instagramable thus no pictures from me on this one. But it is Delicious AF and THE CHILI IS AMAZING! But beware its HOT they have a warning written on the wall if your pregnant, old, or have a heart condition don't eat the chilli. Well at least they used to have that warning on the wall, I didnt check for it this time. I got a chilli cheeseburger this time and it was a delicious as per usual. My normal order is a chilli cheese burger, long dog with bacon and cheese and fries. Yup I eat all that. Its worth making extra space I my stomach for the canteen. This place is a CT Staple and I will try and eat here anytime I visit. If you like burgers and dogs this place is definitely worth a visit.
