White's is another diner featured in a 2013 book, "Classic Diners of Connecticut" by Garrison Leykam. Manufactured in 1957 by dining car maker, De Raffele, it has all the "bones" of diners of the past... plenty of stools and booths and stainless steel and glitz. So on another perfect day, drove the 70+ miles to the B'port train station to collect best friend, Hopalong Casualty, formerly known as Zagbolt. White's is only a couple of miles from the station. Smallish parking lot on a busy thoroughfare. We were seated at a booth by Carolina, who attended to all our culinary needs and kept coming w the coffee. I ordered a CBH omelet w grits and rye toast. HC ordered a small stack of pecan pancakes, a side order of sausage, a side order of CBH and two eggs over. I guess he wasn't that hungry. Especially since he tried to give me most of his CBH and sausages when they arrived. My omelet was a bit overcooked w not that much hash, compared to a lot of other diners. The grits, however, were outstanding. Very tasty and smooth. HC shoveled most of his food very quickly, although he did bring a lot of CBH home to his wife, "the breathtaking Maria". We agreed the CBH was from a can. Overall, service was great, prices VERY reasonable, and it brought us back in time to visit a vintage '57 diner. 4 stars read more

Whites diner. It was the first diner I have gone to here in Bridgeport. We came here and got a traditional American breakfast. Blueberry pancakes, bacon egg sausage, and homefries with toast and coffee. The waitress was tentative, the environment was clean, and my lady gave me some history on the ownership of this diner. I ate almost everything. I enjoyed the blueberry pancakes the most. I would love to come back and have breakfast here again. read more

I was driving across the street and saw the name "white peoples diner" I thought it was racist but when I walked in it was full of my Hispanic and black people but the service was not so good it was decent it had me waiting then she said what would you like to get and didn't even give me a menu to see my options that was minus a star plus the tables were dirty and didn't even sit me anywhere she told me to sit in the back which I thought was racially motivated but I let it Slide Over all there's a lot of bad and goods but it's a 2/5 my beat up f-159 would be better than this no offense read more

The boyfriend & I came to Bridgeport to look for apartments. We got hungry & searched for a brunch spot. After seeing a lot of nice pictures on yelp for White's Diner, I decided to try it out! The food came out quickly, was reasonably priced, and tasted good! I ordered the veggie omelette special (came with home fries & toast) and the pancake combo (came with scrambled eggs, bacon, tiny OJ & coffee). We both ate well & didn't feel so heavy afterwards. A very solid diner choice. Friendly and prompt service. Unassuming surroundings. The only thing missing was Guy Fieri. And a little lower prices. For an egg white vegetable omelette with coffee (without toast too!), charging nearly $13 is a little steep. It was good, but not great. Missed the breakfast time at the hotel and we were starving so we looked around on yelp and found this place. On the outside, it's really worn down and didn't look too appealing. Walking in, it was like stepping in a time machine back to the old days. It was a nice feeling. I ordered french toast with ham and my boyfriend ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese sammy. We got our orders pretty quick. The french toast was the best I've had in a very long time. It was perfectly cooked, not soggy or burnt. It was refreshing. The ham had a smoked taste to it, very tasteful. I heard the bacon, egg, and cheese was yummy. It looked like it was! Bridgeport has a lot of history. A lot of old buildings, including this one. Friendly, fast service! I almost never get a sit-down meal while on the job, but now that I know how fast the kitchen will put out food for those in uniform, I will definitely be back. I had french toast with a side of sausage, while my partner had a breakfast sandwich on a hard roll--they even gave him a free side of hash! We were both nicely full at the end of our meal. I definitely appreciate this kind, considerate, fast service when working! Next time I'm getting an omelet--they looked so good (and huge!) as the plates were going by the counter. read more

Back in the day this was the place to see and be seen. It still is. You can run into any and everybody. From that friend you haven't seen in a minute, local politicians, neighbors, Bridgeport area business owners, familiar faces, and people reconnecting are the norm,etc. It still has that vibe, but since the new owner took over there is a slightly different feel when you walk in the door. It seems like all of the faces are new in the booths and behind the counter. Change must happen. it is a part of life, but it takes some getting used to. Let's be honest the food has never been overwhelming gourmet delicious, but it's hot and fast and fresh. The waitresses have changed considerably since the new owners took over, but they are just as friendly and efficient. It takes time to build up that friendly rapport with new waitresses. I suppose when you go somewhere for so long, then all of a sudden everyone that knew you is gone, it feels a little strange, and a little sad at times. The owner is a very nice guy. He comes around and greets the tables, makes sure you are happy. I must say I was a little concerned when it was sold to the new owner, but he balances that fine line between what everybody remembers, and trying to improve for the sake of a better business, and customer experience. I don't envy that task at all. The restaurant business is a fickle mistress. This place has been an institution of Bridgeport for a very very long time. So he is trying to please the old school and bring in the new school. Overall definitely make this your neighborhood spot. It's a good place to meet people and relax, or to have a meeting over some good grub - I particularly love the cheeseburger platter . Add some bacon ;) The milkshakes are thick, cold, flavorful, and stay away if you have to deal with blood sugar issues! LOL trust me it's hard splitting my milkshake with my eating companion. Because it's so good I want every drop of it! I wish they had a better selection of desserts, but it is what it is. They have put some new items on the menu, tweaked some of the prices, but that's what happens when you need to inflate to deal with the economy and the costs of running a restaurant. Oh YEA YUMmY and Patriotic! If they had an updated look, I'd give them 5 stars. Greg, who runs the place is a veteran and offers, on the last day of each month, a free, complete breakfast -- eggs, meat, toast, potatoes and drink -- to any active-duty military person from any branch and the National Guard who may be stationed nearby. OUTSTANDING! White's is a Bridgeport institution, in existence since 1935. Greg's family has owned it since 1977, the fourth owners. The diner's seats have been filled by a slew of local leaders and public safety workers through the years. Al Pacino filmed a scene of the movie "Righteous Kill" there. This diner, unfortunately closes at 3p, but offers a wide variety of wonderful choices for the time they are open. For the our military members, YES they have S.O.S. I have a dairy allergy and called to ask about whether I could order an egg and ham sandwich because I have a dairy allergy and the women on the phone asked if I want it on whole wheat bread. I said sure if there is no milk in the whole wheat bread. The woman told me she did not know if there was milk in the bread. I asked if she could check the ingredients and she said "Honey I dont have time to look at the ingredients." As far as diners go, White's is very hard to beat. It's one of my favorites. Very generous portions, great quality food (finally a place with good italian sausage), and plenty of menu variety. I always get great service, tho they get pretty busy sometimes in the mid-morning rush. I only go there for breakfast so I can't comment on the lunch or dinner experiences. read more
