"Let's go down to the Sunset Grill We can watch the working girls go by" (Don Henley) The Trumbull Café & Grille is a nice breakfast and lunch joint three of us visited for lunch yesterday. Even though it has a White Plains Road address, you don't see it because it really isn't on White Plains Road. It's behind the main road, in a stand-alone plaza behind an office building. Or, as my nephew said, it's in a weird location. Their menu has a Mexican accent. I say that because their on-line menu features Breakfast Tacos, Huevos Rancheros, a Chili Omelet, an amazing sounding chorizo/serrano chilies/black bean concoction, three kinds of breakfast burritos, a Mollete, chilaquiles, a Cemita sandwich, two kinds of quesadillas, a chicken or beef burrito, and three kinds of street tacos. Oh, and let's not forget their two house-made salsas and three brands of hot sauce on your table. Now, I must mention that you should take their on-line menu with a grain or two of salt, because it has a November 2022 date on it and the listed prices are outdated, as my eagle-eyed nephew pointed out. Anyway, on to the food - which was great. We had Chicken N Waffles (served with Cabot butter and fried chicken strips, hot sweet chili and powdered sugar on top), Chocolate Chip pancakes, and Breakfast Tacos (Corn tortillas served with home fries, Monterey jack black beans, scrambled eggs, bacon topped with avocado salsa). The tacos were mine and they were stuffed with all of that aforementioned goodness. I could only handle two of them and just had the third for breakfast today. The chocolate chip pancakes looked great - drizzled with chocolate syrup and what seemed to be a chopped-up slab of solid chocolate perched on top. Likewise, the chicken and waffles looked great - a full-sized circular waffle served with two sizable chicken tenders. Service was very good, with a check-back and water refills, and the food came out fairly quickly. Our lump sum unitemized check was $50.45 so I can't compare the web prices to their actual prices, but rest assured the web pricing is lower (a reasonable assumption considering their web-posted menu was from November 2022). One more thing, when you pay by credit card, there is no place to add a tip. They encourage cash tipping. All in all, with the quirkiness aside, we had a very nice meal here. read more

A friend I was visiting introduced me to this little cute diner place near him. There is seating outside and inside. It was crowded when we got there so we sat at the counter. My friend knew the owners and staff. They were exceedingly polite to him. My friend says that their pancakes and waffles are the best. They also had a Mexican specialties on the menu. There are two menus, one for breakfast and one for lunch. I am on a low carb diet right now so I stuck with the traditional bacon and eggs. My friend got the waffles which did look delicious. Even though my dish was simple it was done perfectly: sunny side up eggs, generous helping of crispy bacon, hash browns that were browned just right. The bacon was a little too salty but if you eat it with the hash browns it's not too bad. They accept credit cards but prefer cash. read more

Food is very good and fresh I used to go to this place almost every Saturday, one Saturday my son was a little late getting there because of an accident. anyway he got there maybe 15 to 20 min later we ordered our breakfast the place got a little slower we were eating having a second cup of coffee and the waitress came over to tell us they needed the table mi d you there were other tables empty and no one waiting. Went here with friends for brunch and the food was very food! We ordered a bunch of food and everything we ordered was delicious. The prices are super affordable as well which I thought was great. I actually ordered two meals, the avocado toast (which iate too fast and forgot to photograph) and this French toast. I like the avocado toast, my only complaint is that I wish they smashed the avocado instead of slicing. It fell apart as I ate it which wasn't too big a deal. Also, the poached eggs were not cooked long enough and the whites were still runny. Flavors were great though! Came here for breakfast on a Friday morning and it was PACKED, even though it was busy we were able to get seated in a few minutes and the service was very attentive. It's a cute quaint diner with limited seating My brother said the sauce that came on his chicken and waffles was amazing. He hasn't stopped asking to go back since. I will never eat here again! I ordered 2 things a spicy breakfast buritto $14 and an order of chocolate chip pancakes. On their own website for weekend menu it listed the buritto for $14 and plain pancakes for $9. So I addd choc chips so I knew there would be an up charge. Blueberry pancakes were 13 so I figured it's comparable. First, it was probably the best sandwich of any kind that I've ever had. I had to sit at the counter (not my favorite) but it seems a popular place for lunch. The mug of white and sweet potato chips- pleasantly not salty- was an added bonus. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Why not a 5? Because I had to face a large screen TV displaying Fox News, and ended up with anxiety to accompany my lunch. When will businesses realize that overtly biased programming on their TVs (in either direction) turns off customers? Next time I'll see what's on TV BEFORE I sit down, and if it's unpleasant I'll go elsewhere. read more

The place was jam packed on a weekday which is always a good sign. The service struggled a bit, but that's likely because they were completely packed. During our six-day stay in central Connecticut, we tried a bunch of lunch and dinner spots. As far as I'm concerned, the Trumbull Cafe & Grill was a total standout. While the place is visibly Mexican, it offers white-bread American fare along with Mexican dishes. You'll find both breakfast and lunch items on the menu. When we arrived, there were both indoor and outdoor tables available. We sat at the lunch counter, which added to the American diner feel of our visit. I ordered the carnitas burrito bowl, which I would have termed a "plato" (carnitas plate) -- rice, beans, protein, salsa, greens,.... That lunch was perfect! We paid our bill with a credit card but were not offered the opportunity to add a tip to the charge. That was unusual! Fortunately, I carried some cash that I could plop down next to our plates as we got up to leave. A tip was well deserved. The only place we could sit was at the bar and zero server would greet us. Different people kept coming and going ignoring us and I asked two different people to take our order and the third finally did. We get our food which is wrong of course. Had things on it that I asked to not be on there. It took us three different people to get the check. The person would come over and keep saying someone else would bring us our check. I came here to get some work done while grabbing a bite to eat. This is the perfect cafe to work from because they have tons of counter space and free wifi! I ordered the trumbull mex breakfast burrito and added avocado to it. Wow, it was absolutely delish. I added tons of valentina hot sauce to it for some extra heat and it was perfection. The chorizo was perfectly spicy and the avocado/black beans balanced it out so well. I only ended up eating half of it because it was so filling. It is very affordable and a great breakfast option.
